The Suurise

The Suurise

**Welcoming the Sunrise**

Accepting the invitation of my daughter, who often goes out to watch the sunrise, my wife and I headed to the shores of Carnegie Lake in Princeton early at dawn. She had already chosen a spot, set up a lantern, prepared chairs and blankets and was waiting for us. Her small group of student leaders, whom she trains, quietly joined her. In silence, we all face the direction where the sun will rise. Why do we long to welcome the sunrise like this? The scene is gorgeousl. It dispels the darkness and brings light. One might say, "Light is life." The Buddha statue at Seokguram Grotto in Gyeongju receives the first sunlight rising from the East Sea. The tombs in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings are not only burial places for the kings but also contain the items they used in life and their servants, who are buried with them. A shaft is designed so that once a year, sunlight reaches the king's body, which is buried deep and safely. Everyone seeks light and the sun.

Many travelers hike up Mount Sinai in Egypt to witness its spectacular sunrise. My wife and I stayed at a hotel at the foot of the mountain and began our ascent at 1 AM, riding camels for an hour to the point where they could take us, then walking the remainder of the way to the summit with our guide carrying a lantern. Many people had already gathered at the site where there is a hut built in memory of Moses . As dawn broke, the opposite mountain peaks appeared, revealing the grandeur and beauty of Moses' house and the entire mountain. The splendor and majesty of the red, treeless rocky mountain were awe-inspiring. Everything that had been covered in darkness seemed to boast of itself as the sun rose. While the sunrise over Ocean Beach or Lake Michigan is beautiful, how could they compare? Even the sunrise over Carnegie Lake in the city has its own beauty. Through Zechariah, God asks me, "What do you see?"

The sun, barely visible between the trees far beyond the lake, gradually rises. Though it appears small, the sun drives away the darkness, revealing things as they truly are in the light. The calm ripples of the lake, the tree branches and leaves outstretched as if in welcome, the shimmering dew on the grass—these all whisper of the brilliance of light. I resonate with the moment in creation when God created light and saw that it was good. The lanterns that had illuminated the darkness are no longer needed. My pride and accomplishments, once seemingly great and bright, now mean nothing. A few rowboats race across the lake as if in a competition. Cars speed energetically down the road. A busy day, full of works to do, is well underway. As the sun continues to rise, it quickly fills the lake before me, drawing closer and running across the vast sky. With a speed of 1,670 km per hour, no plane could fly like that! Even as we sleep through the night, the sun is tirelessly at work. As the sun comes closer, I can no longer look at it because of its brilliance, and I can’t lift my eyes. In front of such powerful light, I bow my head as a weak being, exposed for all my faults and shortcomings, unable to say anything. I am entirely exposed before that light.

God, the Creator, is light and life. His Son, Jesus, is the light, and before Him, nothing can be hidden. Revealing my faults and shortcomings is not to condemn me but to cleanse me. By realizing my sin and receiving cleansing, I know and thank that He took the punishment for my sins, opening the way for forgiveness and life. Not only for me, but even Buddha and the kings of Egypt—everyone—must recognize that without Jesus, who is the light and life, there is no path to life. He, the Sun of Righteousness and the Light, is the one we long for and want to embrace.

I AM the LORD

I AM the LORD

I AM the LORD (Jehovah)
A friend I met for the first time in over 60 years after graduating from college reminded me that I had been admitted to college as the top student. I felt ashamed before God. When I was in my senior year of high school, I was serving as the president of the church's student assembly and was unable to properly prepare for college entrance exams due to many activities including the Christmas event. On top of that, I was exhausted from a long-term cold amd cough, and my mother had made meat soup, but I had no appetite and couldn’t eat, while the exam date was fast approaching. I had no choice but to pray. "Lord, the entrance exam is approaching, but I haven’t been able to prepare properly. My friends and teachers all know that I am a Christian. If I fail the exam, it is not I but You that will be ashamed. Lord, you are the Lord of wisdom and knowledge, please help me to pass. Lord, once You are going to help me get into college, please allow me to be admitted at the top ranking for Your name and glory." After praying, I took the exam.

The day the list of admitted students was announced through the daily newspaper, I went to the library to check the paper, and a friend told me, "You were admitted as the top student." I didn’t believe it, thinking it must be someone with the same name. But when I checked the paper, it was me I couldn’t imagine that God would answer that quickly to my desperate prayer. When a teacher at school congratulated me and asked how I had managed to do it, I responded, "It must have been a chance." As I turned away, I felt deeply ashamed before God and realized my mistake.

I remembered the interview with the university newspaper where they interviewed the top students from all colleges. I wanted to know what I had said back then 65 years ago about my privilege admission, I asked a junior colleague to retrieve the paper for me. When I read it, I realized that I had not even mentioned that my admission as the top student was by God’s grace. I realized once again how ungrateful I had been, and it connected to what happened afterward.

Even after entering college, my cough persisted. When I saw a doctor, he diagnosed me with early-stage tuberculosis, which was considered a national disease at the time. The doctor said that with treatment, I would soon recover, and six months later, there was no trace of the illness. As the news of my admission interview spread, I was recruited as an English teacher and homeroom teacher at a night school for underprivileged poor youth, such as newspaper sellers, shoeshine boys, or housemaids. Every evening, I taught and cared for them with joy and love, while also playing a part in a Christian club. The four years of college life passed quickly. Upon graduation, I was supposed to either enlist in the military or be appointed as a high school teacher, but neither applied to me. Suddenly, I collapsed, coughing up blood. It was severe tuberculosis. Hope and desire for life disappeared, and the end seemed near. How could this happen? My parents, wanting to avoid the shame of having a Christian believer suffer, sent me to a distant sanatorium, hoping I would die there.

The night before I was admitted to the sanatorium, I stayed at an inn. That night, the Lord spoke and gave me a word: "I shall not die but live, and proclaim the deeds of the Lord." (Psalm 118:17) It was not a command from the Lord, but my resolution. To someone who had come to die, a word of promise of life and mission was given. Then why this fatal illness? "Though He has chastened me severely, He has not given me over to death." (Psalm 118:18) When I accepted this word, I was filled with joy and hope. Six months later, I was discharged, and to this day, I have tried to share what the Lord has done for me

As I remember now, when I was preparing for college and had decided to study law, the Lord approached and proposed, "How about leaving judging as a judge to me and spreading My love yourself?" I accepted this suggestion. The Lord desires us to spread His love and deeds. When God called Moses to deliver His people who were suffering as slaves in Egypt, He revealed His name as the LORD (Jehovah) and delivered them with his power and miracles. He wanted to make Himself known and acknowledged as Jehovah God. Acknowledgment and praise are His glory and joy. Even now, God says, "I AM the LORD." Not only His name but also His deeds show that He is the one and only Jehovah God, incomparable to anything else. Therefore, I acknowledge and praise Him.

Ora et Labora

Ora et Labora

**Prayer and Labor - Ora et Labora**

The first Monday of September is a public holiday known as Labor Day. It’s a day to acknowledge and appreciate the physical and spiritual labor of workers, who sweat and strive to ensure a better life for all, and to give them a day of rest. Labor is hard work, so naturally, people tend to avoid it. Especially jobs that are difficult, dirty, and dangerous—the so-called “3D” jobs—are often shunned. While work is respected, imagine how inconvenient everyday life in America would be without the labor of Mexican workers, especially given the shortage of manual laborers.

In Korean culture, too, the notion of wearing white clothes and toiling in the fields is not easy. There's an old story about missionaries who came to Korea long ago. While they were playing tennis during a break, some yangban (Korean nobility), who wore traditional hats and smoked long pipes, watched them. When they saw the missionaries sweating, they asked, “Why are you working so hard, sir? Why don’t you have one of our servants do it for you?” For the yangban, sweating and hard work were tasks for servants.

However, working and sweating is a gift from God. When God commanded humans to be fruitful, multiply, subdue the earth, and rule over all living creatures, it was a blessing and a privilege—a way to participate in God’s creative work. When humanity turned away from God, the earth produced thorns and thistles, and God decreed that people would have to toil and sweat for their food throughout their lives. The basic condition for human life is the labor of the body, mind, and spirit, through which God’s will is accomplished.

Jesus came into the world so that people might have life and have it more abundantly. He worked tirelessly, preaching the gospel, healing the sick, casting out demons, raising the dead, and breaking many forms of bondage that held people captive. To accomplish this work, He spent time in prayer before God. Whether early in the morning in a quiet place, on a high mountain, or through all-night prayer, He relied on the Father’s will and strength. He also chose disciples to be with Him and sent them out to do the work He was doing. The first priority was to spend time with the Lord, listening to His word, learning, and being trained in prayer. When the disciples couldn’t heal a demon-possessed boy, Jesus told them that such things could only be done through prayer. Thus, prayer before work and work done in prayer become one—prayer is labor, and labor is prayer.

In the 6th century, Saint Benedict made “Prayer and Labor” (Ora et Labora in Latin) the guiding principle for the lives of the monks he trained. The first duty of those who follow the Lord is to pray, meditate on the Word, and spend time with Him. The next is to labor, whether in the fields or in weaving, to sustain life on earth. This balance between prayer and labor is still maintained as the rule of monastic life today.

How great was the suffering of the crucifixion, endured to save humanity from sin and death? When Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, He was so deeply distressed that His sweat became like drops of blood. Yet, He boldly went to the cross and joyfully fulfilled the Father’s will. If laboring in prayer and laboring to accomplish God’s will is a blessing and privilege, how great indeed is that blessing!

Live!

Live!

**Live!**

The world experienced its first-ever shutdown in history due to COVID. Watching loved ones die, people avoided and were cautious out of fear. However, many choose death for themselves. In Korea, the leading cause of death among people in their 20s is said to be suicide. James Hetfield of the American rock band Metallica attempted suicide under the pressure of stress but turned back after hearing a voice telling him, Live. Life can be hard, with intense depression, loneliness, and overlapping mental disorders, leading to suicidal impulses, but the voice of God telling us to live can be heard.

God is life, and He blessed those He created with the command to be fruitful and multiply. Living is a blessing. When Israel began, God took and nurtured a bloody newborn abandoned on the roadside, telling it to live, even though it was covered in blood. Even in the darkest trials and sufferings, God tells us to live and holds us up.

To live, we must gain the strength to grow and work, and must eat, move, and rest appropriately, meet companions to be with. The most important thing is to follow the word of God, who commands us to live. Not just by bread alone, but by the word of God, which is the nourishment of life. In the Garden of Eden, Adam was allowed everything except one thing: he was not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Judging what is right or wrong harms life; thus, God’s word tells us to accept one another and love each other. When Israel grew and bore fruit but then betrayed and left God, He asked, "Why do you choose to die? Turn back, repent, and live." Jesus' first words were, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." Knowing our relationship with God and returning to Him is life and heaven.

Why does God tell us to live? Because there is work to be done. Each person has work given to them. It is to know, acknowledge, and accept God, the source of life. What God hates most is for his people to set up idols other than Himself. Sometimes we may want to replace the invisible God with something visible, but what is visible is temporary, while the invisible God is eternal, so we praise God. It is to tell others who God is and what He has done. The psalmist says that the reason he is alive and not dead is to proclaim what God has done. He is with me, protects me, provides for my needs, rescues me from suffering and hardship, and sent His son Jesus to forgive my sins and save me from death, giving me eternal life. By telling people around me, or going far away to proclaim who God is and what He has done, life is spreaded. Jesus said, "I must go to the other villages too, to preach the gospel, for that is why I have come." It is the mission given to us while we have life.

Moses, born as a Hebrew in Egypt, was abandoned in the river under the king’s order that all male babies be thrown into the river to die. But the princess rescued him, raising him in the palace under the command of the King of Kings, God, who said, "You shall live." He was trained in the wilderness and at the age of 80 was given the mission by God to liberate His people and lead them to the Promised Land. When he accomplished his mission after 40 years, his eyes were not dim, and his strength had not weakened, but his mission was over, so God called him to live with Him forever. Moses, along with Elijah, met Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration long after, discussing the path of human liberation, opening the way for our salvation and eternal life. Liberation Feast

Received the Holy Spirit?

Received the Holy Spirit?

"Did you receive the Holy Spirit?
When you start anything, there is a period of learning. I came to the United States to study with the intention of becoming a professor, not a pastor, following my wife's wishes. After completing one course, I found myself in a situation where I had to accept a call to pastoral ministry. Since I knew nothing about pastoral work, I wanted to learn about it by actually doing it and from other pastors.. As there were no other Korean churches, I decided to attend American churches with evening services. I found two Apostolic Pentecostal churches and planned to alternate between them as time allowed, to learn about pastoral work.
One evening, I went to one of these churches, and the pareacher, who was a guest speaker, pointed at me and asked, 'You, the Korean pastor over there, have you received the Holy Spirit?' I replied, 'Of course!' Then he asked, 'Do you speak in tongues?' I said, 'No!' At that time, speaking in tongues was a strange, cult-like phenomenon in Korea. He then declared, 'If that's the case, you have not received the Holy Spirit!' Anger welled up within me, wondering if he could really be a pastor, and at the same time, I felt ashamed that a pastor who hadn't received the Holy Spirit was doing ministry. After the sermon, the congregation went forward to pray for each other, so my wife and I also went forward. The pastor  of the church handed me the microphone and asked me to say a few words. I, as a Presbyterian pastor, said that in 1 Corinthians 12, there are nine gifts of the Holy Spirit, including speaking in tongues, so why judge whether someone has received the Holy Spirit based on whether they speak in tongues or not? As soon as I finished speaking, they surrounded me and began to pray. I felt grateful. Were they praying for the pastor who had not received the Holy Spirit to receive it?
The work of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is essential not only in ministry but also in faith. I believed I had already received the Holy Spirit, as I had been inspired by the Holy Spirit to believe in Jesus, understand the Word, teach, preach, visit church members, and counsel them.
When I returned to my church and prayed, I heard a voice: 'Do you believe in the Bible, Jong-hyeong?' I responded, 'Yes, I believe, and I live by that Word.' 'Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?' 'Yes, I believe.' Then, the voice asked, 'Why do you not believe in speaking in tongues?' I was deeply shocked. I admitted that this was something I had never considered and answered, 'I was wrong. From now on, I will believe.'
Later, at another church, the pastor said to the congregation, 'If anyone wants to pray in tongues, please do so, but only when there is an interpreter.' Someone began praying in tongues, and immediately another person interpreted. Seeing such order and peace was a very different experience from what I had seen in Korea. There are tongues that are understood by people who speak different languages (Acts 2), and there are tongues of prayer offered to God (1 Corinthians 14), but in most churches, the latter was practiced without interpretation. When Paul met believers in Ephesus, he asked them, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?' They didn’t even know that the Holy Spirit existed. After sharing Jesus with them and praying for them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. Unlike other gifts, speaking in tongues manifests immediately, so I came to understand that it is often seen as evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit.
As I came to believe in the Holy Spirit’s work and speaking in tongues, my faith and ministry changed. I realized that it wasn’t me but the Holy Spirit who was directly at work, and that it was the Holy Spirit’s help that enabled me to carry out my ministry among immigrants. The remarkable thing was that after three years of ministry, when I was about to return to the doctoral program to become a seminary professor, my wife, who had originally wanted me to be a professor, said, 'Why pursue more doctoral studies? A pastor should just do ministry.' We agreed to accept the opportunity God was giving us and obey. It was all the work of the Holy Spirit, and I give thanks and praise to the Lord."

Love One Another

Love One Another
