의인의 고난 The Suffering of the Righteous 아이가 태어나며 울지 않기도 하는가나?. 울지 않는 아이는 죽은 것 같아 일부러 울게 한다. 태어나며 우는 것은 삶이 고난임을 받아들임이다. 생명을 가진 사람은 누구나 고난을 겪지만 그래도 의인이 고난을 당하면 이상하게 보인다. 시편에서 의인이 고난 당하는 것을 많이 노래한다. 남다른 의인이 고난 당하는 것이 특별해 보인다. 욥은 부자로서 어려운 자를 돌보고 하나님을 경외하여 그에게는 흠이 없고 순전하여 악에서 떠난 의인으로 인정되었다. 그가 많은 재산을 다 잃어버리고 믿음으로 기르던 열 자녀가 함께 모여 잔치하다가 모두 죽음을 당하고 자신은 온 몸에 종기가 생겨 기와조각으로 긁어야 하는 고난을 겪었다. 그와 제일 가까운 아내는 그의 고난을 보다 못해 차라리 하나님을 저주하고 죽어라 하였다. 왜 그에게 그런 고난이 왔을까? 그의 고난에는 어떤 이유가 있는 것이 분명하다. 멀리서 소문을 듣고 찾아온 친구들은 고난은 죄의 결과라며 죄를 회개하라 한다. 내가 잘못하여 건강을 잃기도 하고 일을 망치기도 한다. 변론을 듣던 엘리후는 고난은 단련과 훈련하는 과정이라 한다. 운동 선수는 훈련 없이 되지 않는다. 좋은 바이올린의 나무는 찬 겨울 폭풍을 잘 이겨낸 것이라 한다. 욥은 단련 받은 후에는 순금으로 나올 것이라 한다. 고난의 이유를 다 알 수 없다. 갑자기 자식이 죽거나 암 진단을 받는 것이 그러하다. 고난에는 우리가 알지 못하는 이유가 있다. 욥의 고난에는 사탄의 술수가 있다. 사탄은 속이고 넘어뜨리며 사람을 교만하게 하고 하나님을 떠나 죄와 죽음으로 몰고 간다. 사탄은 예수님을 시험하였지만 예수님은 오히려 그를 정복하였다. 하나님의 아들이라 말하고 사역하자 신성모독으로 사형에 해당한다고 고발을 당하였다. 로마의 총독은 그에게서 죄를 찾지 못하였지만 군중의 소리에 굴복하여 그는 가장 비참한 십자가에 못박혀 죽는 고난을 겪었다. 죄 없는 그의 고난은 다른 죄인을 대신한 것이었다. 그가 찔림은 우리의 허물을 인함이요 그가 채찍에 맞은 것은 우리 죄악을 인함이라. 그가 죽음으로 우리가 생명을 얻게 하였다. 누구든지 그를 믿으면 죄와 죽음의 고난을 벗어나 영생과 영광을 누리게 된다. 이보다 더 큰 축복이 있을까! 죽음을 이기고 주님은 부활하여 하나님 나라의 영광에 들어가고 주를 믿는 자를 기다리고 계신다 세상에서 주를 믿는 사람은 많은 고난과 박해를 받지만 주의 영광을 바라보며 이겨낸다. 로마의 기독교 박해시대 교회지도자 폴리캅을 심문하던 자가 노인인 그에게 예수를 부인하고 죽음을 피하라고 하자 나의 84년동안 한번도 나를 모른다 하지 않는 주님을 내가 모른다고 하랴? 나를 얼른 주께로 보내 달라고 하였다. 잠시 받는 고난은 장차 누릴 영광과 가히 비교할 수 없음을 알고 있다. 영원한 영광을 바라보며 주를 위한 고난을 이기며 다른 사람을 그 영광에 초청하는 삶이 얼마나 아름다운가! The Suffering of the Righteous Is there a child who does not cry at birth? A child who does not cry seems lifeless, so people make the baby cry on purpose. The cry at birth is the first sign of accepting that life itself is suffering. Every living being experiences hardship, yet when the righteous suffer, it seems strange. The Psalms often sing of the suffering of the righteous, for when those who live rightly endure pain, it stands out as something special. Job was a wealthy man who cared for the poor and feared God. He was blameless, upright, and turned away from evil. Yet he lost all his possessions, his ten children—raised in faith—were killed while feasting together, and his body became covered with painful sores that he scraped with broken pottery. His wife, unable to bear his suffering, urged him, “Curse God and die.” Why did such suffering come upon him? Surely, there must be a reason. Friends who heard of his misery came from afar and insisted that his suffering must be the result of sin, urging him to repent. Indeed, we may lose our health or fail in our work because of our mistakes. But Elihu, who listened to their debate, argued that suffering can be a process of training and refining. No athlete succeeds without discipline. The finest violin wood, it is said, comes from trees that have withstood the harshest winter storms. Job himself declared that after being tested, he would come forth as pure gold. We cannot always know the reason for suffering. Sometimes children die suddenly, or we receive a diagnosis of cancer without explanation. There are reasons beyond our understanding. Job’s suffering involved the schemes of Satan, who deceives, tempts, and drives people into pride, sin, and death. Satan even tempted Jesus, but Jesus conquered him. When Jesus declared Himself the Son of God and carried out His ministry, He was accused of blasphemy and sentenced to death. Though the Roman governor found no fault in Him, he gave in to the crowd’s demands, and Jesus suffered the most shameful death on the cross. The suffering of the innocent One was for the sake of sinners. “He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed.” Through His death, we received life. Whoever believes in Him is freed from the suffering of sin and death and receives eternal life and glory. What greater blessing could there be? Having conquered death, the Lord rose again and entered the glory of God’s kingdom, where He awaits those who believe in Him. In this world, believers endure many trials and persecutions, yet they overcome by fixing their eyes on the glory of the Lord. During the Roman persecution of Christians, when the aged church leader Polycarp was urged to deny Christ and save his life, he replied, “For eighty-four years I have served Him, and He has never wronged me. How can I blaspheme my King who saved me? Send me quickly to my Lord.” He knew that present sufferings are not worth comparing to the glory that will be revealed. How beautiful is the life that endures suffering for the Lord, looks toward eternal glory, and invites others to share in it! test
