A Hundredfold Harvest
A Hundredfold Harvest
A Hundredfold Harvest
Autumn is the season of harvest. When we moved into the condominium where we now live, we were given a small plot of land. My wife planted seeds of cucumbers, peppers, squash, and other vegetables, and the harvest was so abundant that we were able to share it with others. When farmers plant rice, barley, and wheat, which are staple foods, they may reap a harvest thirtyfold or even a hundredfold. Such a harvest, however, does not come about on its own.
Jesus explained the kingdom of heaven through the parable of the sower. Some seeds fell along the path, some on rocky ground, some among thorns, and others on good soil. Only the seeds that fell on good soil produced an abundant harvest. This is a reality we see in life. The seed of the gospel of the kingdom of heaven is sown, but whether it bears fruit depends on the condition of the soil of people's hearts. This is a truth confirmed by history.
To obtain a good harvest, a farmer prepares the soil before sowing the seeds. The hard ground must be plowed and turned over to make it soft. Stones and weeds must be removed so that the seeds can sprout and grow in favorable conditions. This is the work God does. The human heart is often hardened and selfish, rejecting God's Word. Missionaries carry the Word of God to others, yet they are despised and persecuted. Even Jesus, the Son of God, experienced rejection and suffering.
To receive the gospel of the kingdom, the soil of the heart must be cultivated and turned over. That is why the first message Jesus proclaimed was, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." Repentance requires the work of the Holy Spirit. After Jesus had departed, the disciples prayed, and on the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon them. They were transformed, and the words they proclaimed carried power. People's hearts were moved, many repented with tears, and about three thousand people came to believe in Jesus as their Savior. Hearts that had once been as hard as a beaten path had been transformed into good soil. Without such a transformation, the proclamation of the gospel is like speaking to the wind, with no response or result.
When missionaries first came to Korea, the country's isolationist policy kept its doors closed, and missionary work was not permitted. Yet the missionaries served with humility and gentleness, persevering patiently until people's hearts began to open. The Holy Spirit worked, and people came to faith.
In Pyongyang, a man named Lee Gi-pung, who would later become a pastor, threw a stone at a missionary, knocking him down and injuring him. But when the missionary rose, he looked at the man who had thrown the stone with loving eyes and a gentle smile. Deeply moved, Lee Gi-pung sought out the missionary and asked for forgiveness. He came to believe in Jesus, whom the missionary proclaimed, and enrolled in a theological seminary established by missionaries. After graduating, he went as a missionary to Jeju Island, which at that time was as foreign and unfamiliar to mainland Koreans as another country. There, he too endured being struck with stones, patiently sowing the seeds of the gospel. This became part of the early history of Korean missions.
Pyongyang, once regarded by missionaries as one of the most hostile cities in the world, was called the "Jerusalem of the East" seventeen years later, at the 1910 World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh. What a remarkable transformation!
God, whose heart is like that of a farmer longing for a fruitful harvest, still desires His people to sow the seeds of the gospel through those He calls. We who carry the gospel have an important responsibility: before sowing the seeds, we must pray, work to cultivate the soil of people's hearts, patiently await the work of the Holy Spirit, and persevere in our efforts so that hearts may be transformed into good soil.
We should learn from what God has accomplished and revealed throughout history and follow the same path today. As we faithfully sow the seeds of the gospel, may God prepare the soil of human hearts and bring forth a harvest a hundredfold.

Your Focus
Your Focus
Your Focus
As we go through life, one of our deepest desires is to live a better life. When we were poor, our greatest desire was simply to escape poverty.
When my father got married, the thatched-roof house where he and my mother lived was so old that rainwater leaked through the roof. Leaving his new bride with his mother, my father went to Japan during the period of Japanese colonial rule, hoping to earn enough money to provide a better life for his family.
He worked hard day and night for a year, but when he looked into his pocket, he found that it was still empty. He then thought, “If I work this hard in my own country, perhaps I can make a living there.” So he returned home.
He borrowed money from a cooperative and purchased abandoned land. He and my mother cleared the land and farmed it, repaid the debt, and then borrowed money again to purchase more land. They repeated this process several times. Eventually, together they built up a substantial amount of farmland and made their living by farming. My mother also worked every night weaving cloth for other families. In time, they had enough not only to provide food for the family but also to have something left over.
They had escaped poverty and were able to live without constant worry. They educated their children and became a model family in the community. The dream of escaping poverty had been fulfilled.
My father later moved to another house and built a new home. His mother, however, continued to walk with me, her grandson, for an hour to attend church, regardless of the season or the weather. He could not stop her. Eventually, he built a small place of worship in the village and invited a preacher to come and lead services. Yet my father himself neither attended church nor embraced the Christian faith.
He had access to newspapers and radio from an early age, and in the evenings he would share news from around the world with the people in the village.
As his mother approached the end of her life, she took her son's hand and said, “When I die, you too must believe in Jesus and come to the heaven where I am going. Let us meet there again.”
After her funeral, my father said, “While my mother was alive, I was an unfilial son because I would not believe in Jesus. But now I will keep her final wish.” He declared that he would keep his promise for the rest of his life, broke his tobacco pipe, and began attending church.
He looked forward to meeting his mother again someday in heaven. God met him there, and from that time on he lived the rest of his life believing in and looking to the Lord.
He believed in the promise of Jesus' second coming. Sometimes he would say to me when I was a child, “The Lord said that He would come again. But He has not come for two thousand years. What has happened?”
My father worked diligently with hope and accomplished many things in this world. Yet he was not satisfied with earthly achievements. He looked beyond the things of this world to the things of heaven, especially to the return of Jesus Christ. He eventually went to be with the Lord. I believe that he is now with the Lord in the kingdom of God, waiting for his family to join him there.
In Philippians 3, Paul says that the citizenship of those who believe in the Lord is in heaven. From there, we await Jesus Christ, our returning Lord, who will transform our lowly bodies and make them like His glorious body. Paul therefore encourages believers to look to his own life and the lives of other faithful believers as examples to follow.
But Paul also says that many people live as enemies of the cross of Christ. They regard earthly things as everything, make their appetites their god, and live in ways of which they should be ashamed.
Yet the cross does not end in death. Christ was raised from the dead, and through His resurrection He saves and transforms those who believe in Him. He will establish His kingdom, and therefore we are to wait for Jesus, who will come again, and set our hearts on the kingdom of God.
When I was five years old, God used a beautiful Bible verse card with a picture on it to speak to me: “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2).
That word captured my heart and became the guiding principle of my life.
To this day, God continues to show me His faithfulness. Therefore, I trust in the Lord, look forward to His coming again, praise Him, and give Him glory.

Facimg a Crisis
Facimg a Crisis
Facimg a Crisis
King Saul of Israel became afraid of David, his wise, brave, and loyal servant, and sought to get rid of him. Whenever Saul was troubled and tormented by an evil spirit, David would play the harp, and Saul would find relief. But when Saul became afraid of David and wanted to kill him, David had to flee.
In 1 Samuel 21, David fled from Saul and went to Achish, king of Gath, hoping to find help. But the servants of Achish recognized David and said to the king, “Is this not David, the king of the land? Is this not the one they sang about, ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands’?” When David heard these words, he became very afraid of King Achish. So he pretended to be insane, letting saliva run down his beard and scratching on the doors of the gate. Achish regarded him as a madman and rejected him, and in this way David escaped the crisis.
Although David acted as though he were insane, he later confessed in the Psalms that God had heard his prayer and given him wisdom to escape. Just when he thought he had escaped one crisis, another crisis was waiting for him. Such experiences continued to happen to him again and again.
When a king gains power, he often wants to eliminate anyone whom he considers to be a threat or an opponent. Saul regarded David as such a person and pursued him with three thousand soldiers. David kept fleeing from one place to another until he reached a point where there seemed to be nowhere left to escape—a true dead-end crisis. At that very moment, a messenger came to Saul with news that the Philistines had invaded the land, and Saul had to turn back.
David was spared by what seemed like a miracle. He called that place Sela-hammahlekoth, “the Rock of Escape” or “the Rock of Separation” (1 Samuel 23:27). His deliverance did not come from his own strength or clever strategy. It came entirely from the help of God.
What about our own lives?
I, too, have been delivered from many difficult situations through God's help. When I suffered from the excruciating pain of shingles and was told that there was little that could be done for the pain, God opened a way for me to continue living. Last year, when I had the most serious fall of my life on the floor of my apartment, I was able to get up limping without breaking any bones or injuring my head. I understood it as though God had sent an angel to hold me up and protect me.
During my years in pastoral ministry, there were people who disliked me because I would not follow their wishes or allow them to mold me into the person they wanted me to be. When I faced such opposition, I had no other way but to fall on my knees before God. The Lord eventually removed those people from the situation, and at times allowed difficulties to come into their lives so that they would reflect on themselves and exercise restraint. Through this, God allowed me to become the first retired pastor in the history of that church.
In the early years of my ministry among Korean immigrants, there were people who had great ambition and abilities but were not properly recognized by society. Seeking recognition within the church community, some of them brought confusion and conflict into the church. In the midst of such circumstances, the fact that I was able to retire peacefully was possible only through God's help and grace. Therefore, I praise the Lord and exalt His name.
Even now, whenever I encounter difficulties or a crisis, I seek to live with an attitude of looking to the Lord, who is both powerful and loving. Because I know that He is with me, I can face the circumstances with a peaceful heart and live with thanksgiving.

A Truly Precious Treasure
A Truly Precious Treasure
A Truly Precious Treasure
At one time, Alaska appeared to be nothing more than a useless land of ice. Yet the United States purchased Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million. Some people called it a foolish and wasteful act. But later, America came to realize that Alaska was a geopolitical treasure, and it became clear how greatly the United States would benefit from the purchase.
Today, there is also great interest in Greenland, the icy land of the Arctic. Denmark, the sovereign nation of Greenland, and representatives of Greenland have entered into agreements with the United States, and in effect, America has gained a strong position there. As a result, the United States has come to have a significant role in the Arctic and its sea routes.
Individuals as well as nations invest because they want to possess something they believe is valuable. In Matthew 13, Jesus speaks about a treasure hidden in a field. When a person discovers the hidden treasure or finds a pearl of great value, he sells everything he has and buys it. The important thing is recognizing that it is truly a precious treasure. Many people may see it and pass by without realizing its value. But the person who recognizes its worth and obtains it is a wise and exceptional person.
Then, what is the most precious treasure in the world?
Jesus asks, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” I consider my life more precious than anything else, and I make many choices and efforts concerning food, exercise, and health in order to preserve it. People invest enormous amounts of time and money in order to enjoy the several decades of life they have on this earth. Yet many are blind to the world beyond death and to the eternal destiny that follows this life.
If we discover Jesus, the treasure of life—the One who solves the problem of sin that brings death and eternal judgment, and who grants forgiveness and eternal life—would we not invest everything we have in Him?
To recognize a treasure as a treasure and to discover it is a great privilege and blessing.
Those who have discovered and received Jesus not only have eternal life, but also experience peace and joy while living on this earth. Therefore, the treasure they possess shines through their lives and becomes visible to others. Other people will see that treasure and desire to have it for themselves.
At the same time, those who possess this treasure do not want to keep it to themselves as people might keep ordinary treasures. Instead, they want to proclaim it and share it with others. They develop a passion for missions and are willing to go even to distant places to tell others about this precious treasure.
Korea was once known as a “hermit kingdom,” living in darkness and isolation. But through missionaries, Korea received the shining treasure of Jesus Christ. Individuals and the nation experienced great blessings and development. As a result, many Koreans developed a passion for missions and went out into the world to share the gospel.
At one time, Korea sent approximately 27,000 missionaries to about 170 countries. In proportion to its population, Korea became one of the world's largest missionary-sending nations. In this way, Korea was blessed with the privilege of sharing the greatest treasure of all.
A person who finds a treasure hidden in a field may want to keep it for himself. But the treasure of eternal life becomes greater as it is shared. Therefore, I hope that we will work even more diligently to proclaim this treasure throughout the whole world, so that not only we but everyone may receive it and the light of life may shine everywhere.
Jesus Christ is truly a precious treasure.

God Is My God
God Is My God
God Is My God
Several years ago in Chicago, I was walking along the lakeshore, looking out over the lake and thinking about John the Baptist. At that moment, I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Jong-hyung is my beloved son. Treat him well.” Through these words, God made me aware of His love for me, and I was assured once again that I am His beloved son. I gave thanks, and I responded to the Lord, saying, “You are my loving Father, and I will lift up and honor Your name.”
For a long time, I have often pictured God embracing me like a little child, gently stroking my head and delighting in me. Like a child looking up into his mother’s face, I look to God and rejoice in His presence. At the same time, I often confess that my soul is at peace, like a weaned child resting quietly in his mother’s arms.
Within this relationship with God, I look to Him and confess, “You are my Lord; apart from You I have no good thing.” I believe that my entire life—not merely a particular moment—has been under the guidance of His hand.
Throughout my working life, I never had to search for a job by submitting applications and then waiting to see whether I would be hired. I simply obeyed when the Lord called and sent me. Whenever He sent me somewhere, He also gave me the ability to do the work, and He provided financially so that my family could live. From an early age, I have experienced that God provides what I need, so I have not had to worry about what I would eat, drink, or wear.
In Psalm 63, David makes a similar confession. He declares, “O God, you are my God,” and he looks for God, seeks Him, depends upon Him, and finds his satisfaction in Him. He seeks the Lord at night and early in the morning. Even in the midst of his busy activities, he confesses that being with the Lord is more satisfying than eating the richest and finest food.
Anyone who has experienced being loved and provided for by a father and mother during childhood can understand something of what it means to say, “God is my God.” There used to be a saying in Korea about a “magic bat” that would grant whatever wish a person made when he struck it. To possess such a thing would be more precious than anything else in the world.
Yet the God who created the heavens and the earth, who owns all things and rules over them, possesses power and glory beyond anything that can be compared with such a treasure. When I do not pursue anything else in this world, but my body and soul long for the Lord, look to Him, give thanks, and praise Him, He responds with joy. He holds me with His right hand and guides me.
Therefore, I can live each day without fear or anxiety. I simply look to the Lord, trusting in His loving care, and continue to praise and exalt His name.

Why Do I Live
Why Do I Live
The Meaning and Purpose of Life
When I first came to America, my goal was to study and become a professor. After nine years, I finally achieved that goal. But because I wanted to become one with those who were suffering through the challenges of immigration and to serve them, I began immigrant ministry again. After twenty-two years, I retired from that ministry.
Yet God continued to give me work and a mission for another thirteen years through interim pastoral ministry and missionary service, until the pandemic came. The pandemic was an unprecedented command that brought separation and a halt to life throughout the entire world. Even during the times when the church suffered the most severe persecution in history, the worldwide church had never completely stopped gathering. Although Satan’s forces sought to prevent the church from gathering, worship of God by individuals and families did not cease. In this way, they stood against Satan.
At my daughter’s birthday wish, I left Chicago, where I had lived for thirty years, and moved closer to her. I first lived in an apartment, and then, after fifty-two years of life in America, I made my twenty-eighth move and came to the condominium where I now live. I consider this place my final earthly home. I have called it Bethel and dedicated it to God as His dwelling place. I have decided to live in the house of God.
My prayer is to walk with the Lord here, live according to His will, and, like Enoch, one day be taken up to be with Him.
At the same time, one reason I continue to live is for my wife. She is not in a position to live by herself. At one point, when I was thinking about letting go of this earthly life, I told her that she could go and live with our daughter. But she said that she could not live there. For a long time, I have therefore carried this thought in my heart: if she is to continue living, I must remain alive as well. I have said that after she goes to be with the Lord first, I will follow. So, at this stage of my life, one meaning of my living is that I must remain here as long as she is living.
With the hope of heaven and while walking with the Lord, I believe that, for as long as I remain on earth, I am to walk this journey together with my wife.
But the very first purpose given to me for my life came when I was five years old. It was not a purpose centered on the things of this earth, but the Lord’s word calling me to “set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2). This has been the direction and goal of my entire life, and it remains so today.
In Philippians 3, Paul describes the goal of his life as following Christ in the power of His resurrection and in sharing in His sufferings and death, pressing on toward the heavenly prize prepared for him. Each day is another step in that race toward the goal. Therefore, I consider each day precious and too valuable to take for granted.
Although Paul accomplished many things, as long as he was alive he could not say that he had already accomplished everything. Until the day he departed from this world and stood before the Lord, he continued to press toward the goal. Paul said that departing this world and being with Christ would be far better, but remaining alive was more beneficial for the believers whom he served. Therefore, he still found meaning and purpose in his life.
I have the same thought. Nothing on earth can be compared with the kingdom of God. Yet if my remaining here on earth is beneficial to the wife whom God has given me to share one body and one life with, then that can be one reason for continuing to live.
And because I still have a mission, I am grateful. I welcome each new day with thanksgiving, praising God, the Lord and owner of my life, who has given me this new day. With the hope of heaven and the desire to walk with my Lord, I begin today.

A Gentle Answer
A Gentle Answer
A Gentle Answer
A young newlywed woman was living with her husband’s family. One early morning, she heard what sounded like people arguing loudly in the courtyard. Frightened, she made a small hole in the paper-covered door and looked outside. To her surprise, she saw them smiling and talking to one another. She had mistaken their loud voices for an argument. It can be difficult to distinguish between loud talking and fighting.
When communicating with someone who has a hearing problem, we may need to speak loudly, but that does not mean we are angry or fighting. In the same way, when a father speaks gently to his son but the son does not listen or respond, the father’s words may become more forceful, and he may even resort to punishment. When someone does not listen to what we say, we may either leave the matter alone or raise our voice and speak harshly so that the person will listen. But the relationship may no longer remain gentle and peaceful.
For a good relationship, we need to listen carefully to one another and give an appropriate response. Proverbs 15 says, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” This is an important principle of communication, and it also applies to the relationship between God and me.
God knew that I had intended to become a judge. He gently invited me to receive His love and share that love with others. I accepted His invitation and prepared myself for that path. When I took the college entrance examination, God allowed me to become the top-ranked student entering the university.
As I studied English, however, my thinking began to change, and by the time I graduated, I had developed a desire to become a diplomat. But at that very time, I contracted severe pulmonary tuberculosis, which was considered a fatal disease in those days, and I had to go to the hospital. On the day before I was admitted, while I was suffering greatly, God spoke to my heart: “This is training so that you will not fear death. Go and share God’s love.”
I responded to Him, and I was healed. I followed the path God had promised, served for forty years, and eventually retired. At that point, I told myself that I had worked enough and that now I would live freely and according to my own wishes.
Then I experienced the most severe pain I had ever known—shingles. For a month, I suffered pain that felt almost like death. In the midst of that suffering, I asked God, “Did you really think you could just live according to your own wishes?” I sensed the voice of God’s anger. Could I possibly oppose God and win? Once again, I had no choice but to surrender.
I learned that listening to God’s voice and following Him is the wisdom of life. When God speaks gently, responding gently and following His way brings joy and fulfillment. But when I ignore His word or rebel against Him and provoke His anger, I have learned through experience that my life can fall into misery and suffering.
I have come to understand that the wisdom and strength of life are found in receiving the heart of God the Father, who comes to me gently for my good and for the sake of my life, and in responding to Him willingly and obediently.

A Deeply Rooted Tree
A Deeply Rooted Tree
A Deeply Rooted Tree
Suppose that, in the early days of the founding of the Republic of Korea, the president was making a tour of the provinces. A local leader, wanting to make a good impression on the president, thought that there should be trees lining the roads. So he cut down some trees and planted them along the roadside. For a few days, the trees appeared to be alive, but because they had no roots, they soon withered and were eventually used as firewood.
In contrast, the Yongbieocheonga, an early Korean literary work, says that a deeply rooted tree is not blown down by the wind, produces beautiful flowers, and bears abundant fruit. It uses the image of such a tree to describe what the life of a person with knowledge and character should be like.
The Apostle Paul speaks in Colossians 2 about a life that is deeply rooted and a life without roots. Human traditions, elementary teachings, worldly powers, and legal regulations are constantly changing. As the Korean saying goes, “Power lasts only ten years,” and even the mountains and rivers change with the passing of ten years. Such things are like shallow-rooted trees that eventually dry up.
On the other hand, those who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord are people who live their lives in Him. Because they are deeply rooted in Him, they are not shaken by the changing ways of the world. They stand firmly according to the teaching they have received and bear fruit, overflowing with thanksgiving.
Jesus came into the world as a human being, yet He is God, and all the fullness of God’s nature dwells in Him. He was put to death, but He rose again and demonstrated the abundance of life. When we believe in Him, receive Him, and are united with Him, we receive and enjoy His living and abundant life.
The human body has limitations and will eventually fall, but Jesus, who rose from the dead, possesses a life that cannot die, and He gives that life to those who believe in Him. Those who believe in the Lord are not marked merely by physical circumcision; rather, they are baptized in the name of Jesus, dying with Him and participating in His resurrection life. This enables them to live like deeply rooted trees that do not wither but produce beautiful flowers and abundant fruit.
Even those who believe in Jesus experience many winds and hardships. They face the changing ways of the world and its traditions, illness and poverty, failure and ridicule, hatred and persecution. Yet they are not shaken. They stand firmly and, believing that they are sharing in the sufferings of the Lord, they give thanks even in their trials. In this way, they reveal the overflowing abundance of life they have received from Him. Such people are those whom the world cannot overcome.
Their lives attract the attention of those who live according to the ways of the world and open a way for them to be led to the Lord. The spread of the gospel of eternal life through such lives has been a reality throughout Christian history and missionary work.
I want to ask myself: Am I a tree that is deeply rooted in the Lord, standing firmly and bearing abundant flowers and fruit because I believe in Him? I desire to renew my relationship with the Lord each day and remain deeply rooted in Him, so that my life may continue to display the abundance of His life.

말과 관계 형성 ords and Building Relationships
말과 관계 형성 ords and Building Relationships
Words and Building Relationships
When I get up in the morning, I first give thanks to God in prayer. Rather than speaking, I want to listen to what God has to say, so I wait before Him, read the Word for the day, listen for His voice, and meditate on what He is saying to me. He has guided me until now with wisdom and love, meeting me sometimes through His Word and sometimes through the circumstances of my life. Therefore, I listen to the Bible because I want to hear His voice.
On September 14, I finished the book of Malachi and began the Gospel of Matthew. Yesterday, on September 28, I finished Revelation and began Genesis. Because I have low vision, reading with my eyes is difficult, so listening is especially important to me. I prefer listening to God's Word not only while I am walking but also whenever I have time.
God is the One who speaks. He created the heavens and the earth by His Word, and everything was formed according to what He said. Not one of His words falls to the ground without being fulfilled. His Word has the power to accomplish what He declares. When we hear and receive His Word, it becomes reality. Whether God speaks directly or speaks through His prophets, His Word is fulfilled.
Elijah declared that there would be neither rain nor dew except at his word, and for three years and six months there was neither rain nor dew. Jesus attended a wedding feast, and when the wine ran out, His mother told Him about it. Jesus told the servants to fill the jars with water and then draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet. They did exactly as He said, and the water had become excellent wine.
Ecclesiastes 5 teaches that listening to God's Word is better than offering sacrifices. When there are too many words, there are many mistakes, and foolish words are easily spoken. Samuel also said that obedience is better than sacrifice and that listening is better than the fat of rams. The message is clear: listening is better than speaking.
Whenever we speak, there is someone to whom we are speaking. Although we may not see that person, there is always someone listening. God in heaven hears everything we say here on earth. When we look back at our past words, there are many things of which we are proud, but also many things we regret. As for the future, we have dreams and plans, but we cannot control what tomorrow will bring.
Communication technology has developed so much that the whole world is now connected. If someone wants to hear what is being said, there are devices that can record even conversations spoken in a private room. There is increasingly little that can be hidden. If this is true even in this world, how much more is there nothing that can be hidden from God in heaven? If we cannot speak carelessly in the presence of an earthly king, how much more carefully should we examine our words and actions before God, the King of kings?
Just as God fulfills what He says, He expects people to act upon what they say. When we make a vow or a promise, we must keep it if we are to be faithful people. It is said that if we are not going to keep our word, it is better not to make a promise at all. When someone makes a promise, it may sound very good at the time, but if the promise is not kept, how can anyone trust that person?
I once told my youngest daughter that if she studied hard and came in first in her class, I would buy her a bicycle. She worked hard and did well in school, and she waited for her father to keep his promise. But I did not buy her the bicycle. When she reminded me of what I had said, I realized that I had completely forgotten that I had made the promise. I was truly ashamed.
God, however, never forgets His promises. He said to me when I was young, “Wherever you go, I will be with you.” Even now, He faithfully remains with me. He is trustworthy, and for this I praise Him and boast in the Lord.
Whenever we meet, we speak with one another, and through our words we continue to build and maintain our relationships. I want to live each day as a child of God, trusting and loving one another, and experiencing joy and gratitude. At the same time, I want to continue growing in an ever-deeper and more intimate relationship of love with God.

Even a Mighty Warrior
In the early days of my ministry as a pastor of an immigrant church, we were not able to build a church of our own. We began meeting on Sundays in a former town hall in Flushing, Queens, New York. During the week, the building was used for many different purposes, but when we gathered there for worship on Sundays, the place was often filled with the smell of cigarettes and alcohol. The atmosphere on the street outside was also rather rough.
Because we wanted to worship in a proper church building, I began knocking on the doors of churches, asking whether we could rent their sanctuary. Some pastors rejected us at the door and would not even meet with us. We experienced rejection after rejection.
Then one pastor agreed to let us use his church for our Sunday worship. He was already renting the church to a multiethnic congregation for Sunday evening worship and was receiving some financial help for the church budget. He allowed our Korean congregation to meet there on Sunday mornings and also on Wednesday evenings. The host congregation met earlier, and we were given the 11:00 a.m. worship hour.
As our Korean church became active and began to grow, some residents living around the church became uncomfortable with us. Some even told us to “go back to your own country.”
One day, the pastor of the host church asked me to come to a meeting with three pastors. When I arrived at the scheduled time, I was surprised to find the church filled with local residents. It was completely unexpected.
The pastor of the multiethnic congregation apologized to the residents and, not long afterward, moved his congregation to another location.
I was caught completely off guard. I stood before the people, looked to the Lord, and first apologized for any inconvenience we had caused. Then I explained the situation.
Most of the residents were descendants of Polish immigrants. I reminded them that their ancestors had also come to America as immigrants. They had lived together, adapted to a new country, and built their lives in a place where the language and culture were different from their own.
I explained that we Koreans had received our education in Korea, had come to America, worked hard, paid our taxes, and were trying to live as good citizens. As first-generation immigrants, we also needed a place where we could gather and support one another.
I reminded them that the American government had permitted us to live here, and I appealed to them: Since we are now neighbors and fellow residents of this community, let us live together in peace.
No one objected. No one opposed what I had said. Instead, I eventually became a pastor who was respected and accepted by the people in the neighborhood.
In the end, the Korean church absorbed and merged with the host congregation, becoming the first congregation in the Presbytery of New York City to merge with a church of another ethnic background.
In the Book of Judges, Jephthah is described as a mighty warrior. Yet Jephthah was the son of Gilead by a prostitute, and because of this, he was rejected by the children of Gilead's wife and driven away from his family.
Even though he was a strong and mighty warrior, he did not fight against them. Instead, he fled and lived in another land.
Later, when the Ammonites attacked Gilead, the elders of Gilead went to Jephthah, looking for a leader who could fight against the enemy. They promised that if he led them to victory, he would become the head of Gilead. Jephthah accepted their offer.
Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon him. Empowered by God's Spirit, he demonstrated the ability of a mighty warrior and won the battle.
Even a mighty warrior, when relying only on his own strength, may have no choice but to flee and seek refuge. But when the Spirit of God comes upon him, he can accomplish great things.
The members of an immigrant church may each be like mighty warriors. Yet even strong and capable people can be pushed aside, disliked, or rejected by the surrounding community. But when the Spirit of God helps us, we can speak to our neighbors, win their trust, and bring about something far greater than we could accomplish by our own strength. Our Korean church was eventually able to merge with the local church and become one with the people of the community.
When we are excluded from the larger community—not only because of racial differences, but also because of differences in our bodies, minds, ways of thinking, or ways of life—we can still turn our eyes to God the Father, the author and perfecter of our faith. He is righteous and faithful. He helps us and does not allow us to remain in disappointment.
There is a Korean saying, “Birds of a feather flock together.” Flowers of the same kind look more beautiful when they grow together, and birds of the same kind often appear more beautiful when they gather together. In a multiracial society, it can also be beautiful and beneficial for people of different ethnic backgrounds to gather together, preserve their identity, and contribute their own strengths to the larger community.
Yesterday, I worshiped at Princeton Alliance Church. There I saw a truly multiracial congregation gathered together, with several pastors and a Korean senior pastor leading the congregation. Together, we praised the Lord Jesus, proclaiming again and again that He is holy and worthy.
As I sensed the presence of the Spirit of the Lord among us, I experienced a glimpse of the kingdom of God here on earth. My heart was filled with grace and gratitude, and I experienced deep joy and happiness in worship.

Become Like Little Children
Become Like Little Children
Become Like Little Children
In Matthew 18, Jesus teaches that whether a person is a child or an adult, everyone is equally precious in the sight of God. As people gathered around Jesus, adults brought their young children to Him so that they might receive His blessing. But the disciples tried to turn the children away.
A culture that excludes children can exist anywhere. In Korea, too, there was a time when children had no place among gatherings of adults. But Jesus rebuked His disciples and taught them that such little ones are precious in the kingdom of heaven. He then told the parable of the lost sheep.
A shepherd who has a hundred sheep realizes that one is missing. He leaves the ninety-nine and searches until he finds the one that is lost. When he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and returns home. The ninety-nine are equally important, but Jesus emphasizes the special joy of finding the one that was lost.
Elsewhere, Jesus tells of a woman who has ten silver coins but loses one of them. She searches every corner of the house until she finds it and rejoices. He also tells of a father who has two sons. One of them takes his inheritance, leaves for a distant country, wastes everything in reckless living, and eventually returns home as a beggar. The father waits for him, welcomes him, and rejoices when he sees his lost son return.
The Pharisees of Jesus' day wanted to be recognized and desired the places of honor at banquets. But Jesus taught people instead to take the lower place. The standard of the Lord is different. He speaks of those who come to Him with the humble heart of a little child—those who recognize their weakness, even when they feel pushed aside by others, and who earnestly long for the Lord and His kingdom.
Jesus also told of a man who prepared a great banquet and invited many people. But they all made excuses, saying that they had other things to do. So the man went out into the streets and invited people to come. Yet there were still empty places. He then sent his servants farther out, even to the roads and countryside, and brought in everyone they could find until the banquet hall was filled.
At the banquet of God's kingdom, both adults and children are invited to participate. Not only Jews, but also people from Galilee, Samaria, Tyre, and Sidon would respond to the call and come to fill the empty places.
There is a well-known story about Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of India. While reading Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, he was deeply moved and came to understand that the gospel was needed to address India's caste system. During a visit to South Africa, he went to a church. But when the person who was guiding people saw him, he told Gandhi, "You should go to the church across the street."
Gandhi was deeply disappointed. He is said to have responded, in effect, "If this is what Christianity is really like, I will remain a Hindu for the rest of my life."
Because of realities like this within Christianity, many people become disappointed with the church and leave. The four people for whom I pray—Lee Pil-joo, Shin Kyung-sook, Park Sung-ho, and Park Song-ja—are people who became disappointed by others in the church and eventually left. I continue to pray for them, but it is not easy to lead them back to the Lord.
Perhaps this is why we need to become like little children. A little child is less inclined to judge and criticize others and is more willing to come with a simple and humble heart. Such a person is well suited for the kingdom of God.
Until these people return and take their places at the banquet, there will always be empty seats. Therefore, the Lord continues to say to us, "Go and fill the empty places."
The banquet is not complete while there are still empty seats.

What Is in Your Hand?
What Is in Your Hand?
What Is in Your Hand?
Among the people we encounter in the Bible, there are few who were as well equipped in both knowledge and ability as Moses.
He was born into a Levite family and, because of Pharaoh’s policy, was placed in the river. But he was discovered and rescued by Pharaoh’s daughter and adopted as her son. He grew up in the royal palace, receiving a broad education that might have prepared him even for a future as a king. He would have been trained not only in literature and learning, but also in the skills and disciplines necessary for life in the royal court, perhaps even in military arts and the practices of the Egyptians. Yet he still carried the identity of a Hebrew. Eventually, he became a murderer and fled from Egypt. For forty years he lived as a shepherd and established a family.
While Moses was living a peaceful and stable life tending sheep, his fellow Hebrews were crying out under the unbearable suffering of slavery. God determined to deliver them and came to Moses, who was tending his sheep, and entrusted this great task to him.
Moses was eighty years old. After building a family and settling into a stable life, it was not easy for him to leave that life behind and begin a completely new adventure.
Moses wanted to know who was sending him, so he asked God His name. God answered, “I AM WHO I AM,” and revealed Himself as the LORD. What an extraordinary name! The One who exists by Himself, who brings all things into being, and who is the source of everything in the universe is certainly different from the many gods of Egypt. Moses tried to decline the calling, but God did not retreat.
Then God asked him, “What is that in your hand?”
“A staff,” Moses answered.
God told him to throw it on the ground. When he did, it became a snake. When Moses grabbed it by the tail, it became a staff again.
Moses also said that he was not a good speaker. But God asked, in effect, “Who makes a person able to speak or unable to speak? Who gives sight or makes a person blind?” The LORD was showing Moses that when He chooses to use someone, He can use that person just as he is and use whatever he already possesses.
What is truly remarkable is that the LORD God does not choose to accomplish His work entirely by Himself. He chooses to work through people. When God determines to use someone, it does not matter what that person has, what kind of person he is, or what limitations he may have. What matters is whether he responds to the Lord’s call.
When Jesus began His ministry, He did not go to Jerusalem to find people with impressive education, social status, and positions of honor. Instead, He went to the Sea of Galilee, a region that could be regarded as remote and overlooked, and called fishermen who had experienced failure in their work: “Follow me.”
They left their boats, their nets, and even their parents behind and followed Him. Their decision and obedience were important. The Lord then worked with them and accomplished His purposes through them.
God does not work alone. He looks for people through whom He can work. To be found and chosen by Him, to hear His calling, and to respond to that calling is to receive the mission He entrusts to us.
We do not accomplish the work by ourselves. The Lord who calls us is with us and enables us to do His work. Therefore, we become humble instruments held in the hands of the Lord.
God asked Moses what he had in his hand. He used Moses’ staff to accomplish many things and ultimately to lead His people out of slavery. The lesson is that whatever we possess—whatever our abilities, circumstances, or limitations may be—when we are held in the Lord’s hands, He can use us and accomplish His work through us.
A cellphone today contains an enormous amount of information and many useful functions. Yet how much of its potential is actually used depends greatly on whose hands it is in.
Likewise, no matter what talents I have or what my circumstances may be, if I am in the Lord’s hands, what is there that the Lord cannot do through me?
I came from a rural background with many limitations and without any particular special talents. Yet I am grateful that, by placing myself in the hands of the Lord who found me and called me, He has used me and accomplished His work through me to this day.
If God could accomplish so much through the staff that Moses held in his hand and use him to lead His people to freedom, how much more might God accomplish if we become like that staff—an instrument held firmly in the hands of the LORD?
The question is not, “What do I have?” but rather, “Whose hands am I in?”

Difficult to Discern
Difficult to Discern
Difficult to Discern
Because of its geopolitical location, Korea has experienced many wars throughout its history. The First Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War were fought in and around Korea, making the Korean Peninsula a battlefield. When Japan won, Korea eventually became a colony under Japanese rule.
Something similar happened to Israel, which was also located in a geopolitically strategic position. King Josiah is recognized as one of the good kings who reformed the nation according to God’s ways and governed the people well. Yet even he faced repeated crises.
At that time, Israel was geographically situated between two great powers, Egypt and Babylon, which were engaged in conflict. Pharaoh Neco of Egypt wanted to pass through Israel on his way to fight Babylon, but Josiah would not allow him to do so. Neco told Josiah that God had commanded him to fight against Babylon and that he was not coming to fight Israel. He asked Josiah to allow his army to pass through the land according to God’s command. But Josiah disguised himself and went out to stop Neco from passing through.
Then, by a seemingly random arrow shot by one of the soldiers, Josiah was seriously wounded. He was taken back to Jerusalem, where he died.
Josiah found himself in a situation that was difficult to discern. Had God really spoken to Pharaoh Neco? Josiah did not believe Neco’s words. Instead, he went out to stop the Egyptian army from passing through Israel on its way to fight Babylon. Perhaps, as king, he thought he needed to protect the nation by refusing to allow any foreign army to pass through his territory or become involved in a war. Whatever his intention may have been, he failed to listen to the word of God that came through Neco. As a result, he ended up engaging in battle with the Egyptians and was killed by an enemy arrow.
Does God speak only through prophets?
Amos was neither a prophet by profession nor the son of a prophet. He was simply a farmer who tended sycamore trees. Yet God spoke through Amos concerning the coming destruction of Israel.
Today, God does not necessarily speak only through pastors. God can speak to anyone whom He chooses. If He is pleased to do so, He can reveal His will and speak through an elder or an ordinary church member. At times He may speak through a vision or a dream. But often, as we read and hear the Word of God through the Holy Spirit, He speaks to our hearts, and we may later see His word fulfilled.
When I was five years old, God impressed upon me the words of Colossians 3:2: “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Those words became a guiding principle throughout my life.
What is important is to discern God’s word, listen to it, and follow it. This can become a blessing and can determine the direction of our lives.
When I was preparing to enter college, I wanted to go to law school. My parents and teachers all agreed with me and encouraged me to study law. But then someone seemed to call my name and ask me:
“You are going to law school?”
“Yes.”
“What will you do if you go to law school?”
“I suppose I will eventually become a judge.”
“What does a judge do?”
“When there is a dispute, a judge determines what is right and wrong and makes a judgment.”
“Leave judgment to Me. How about you spend your life sharing My love?”
At that moment, I realized that it was God who was speaking to me.
Here I can see the difference between my own thoughts and God’s direction. I could have pretended not to hear Him or simply ignored Him and continued according to my own plans. But my response was, “I understand.” And the conversation ended there.
Then I began to ask, “What is the way for me to share God’s love?” As I sought the answer, I decided to become a pastor. I was advised that English literature would be a good major for preparing for ministry, and I followed that advice.
The woman I was dating said that she would never marry a pastor. But I did not give up. Instead, I persuaded her, and together we continued on the path that I believed God desired. Thus I have lived my life to this day.
Looking back, I discover again and again that God is faithful. He takes responsibility for and guides those who follow His way.
If I were given a new life, I would still want to live not according to my own will, but according to the will of God the Father who sent me. I want to fulfill His purpose for my life.
The Lord is great and powerful. He has consistently ruled over my life and continues to rule over the world. Therefore, I lift up His name and praise Him.

If We Are Asleep
If We Are Asleep
If We Are Asleep
When we lie down in bed at night, we go to sleep expecting to wake up the next morning. We may dream while we sleep, but once we fall asleep, we do not know what is happening around us. In that sense, sleep is like death. When we wake up the next morning, we are alive and begin a new day; but if we do not wake up, we have died. Sleep is like death, and at the same time, death is like sleep.
When people were weeping and mourning because a little girl had died, Jesus said that the child was not dead but asleep. They laughed at Him, but Jesus took the girl's hand and said, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up.” The girl immediately got up.
When Jesus' beloved friend Lazarus died, Jesus said that Lazarus had fallen asleep and that He was going to wake him up. The disciples thought that if Lazarus was sleeping, he would wake up on his own. But Jesus was speaking of his death. When Jesus came to Lazarus' tomb, his sister said that he had been dead for four days and that there would already be a bad odor. Yet Jesus called out, “Lazarus, come out!” Just as one awakens a sleeping person, the Lord called Lazarus to rise, and Lazarus came out of the tomb as though he had awakened from sleep.
Jesus declared that He Himself is the resurrection and the life. He died, was buried in a tomb, and yet He rose again on the third day. He appeared to His disciples and confirmed that those who have died will also rise again.
Saul, a Pharisee, regarded those who proclaimed that Jesus had died and risen again as heretics. He persecuted them, arrested them, and had some of them put to death. But on his way to Damascus, he saw a light brighter than the sun and fell to the ground. Then he heard someone calling his name. When he asked, “Who are You, Lord?” the answer came, “I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.”
The man who had not believed in the resurrection of the dead surrendered to the Lord. He rose and became a witness of the risen Lord Jesus. He went on to proclaim that Christ would come again, just as the Lord had promised.
If the dead are merely asleep, then who would mourn their death? We only need to wait for the morning, because they will rise again.
That morning will be the day when the Lord Himself descends from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. On that morning, all those who have died in the Lord will rise as though they were awakening from sleep. They will welcome the Lord and receive and enjoy eternal life and His kingdom. Therefore, no matter what difficulties and suffering we experience in this world, we should comfort and encourage one another.
The Bible also speaks of those who die without knowing Jesus, their Savior. They will rise at the final judgment and face judgment leading to eternal punishment. Therefore, we must preach the gospel to those who do not believe and who fear death.
Saul, after encountering the Lord, became Paul. He traveled throughout Asia Minor and Macedonia and eventually went to Rome, proclaiming Jesus, the Lord of resurrection and life. Through his ministry, he sought to bring people from darkness into light and from death into life.
Jesus left His disciples the Great Commission as His final command: to go to the ends of the earth and proclaim the gospel.
There is no reason to weep for those who are merely asleep, for they will awaken in the morning. But for those who are facing eternal death and punishment, we should have a heart that weeps for them. With that compassionate heart, we must proclaim the gospel and lead them onto the path of life.
Going Through Great Suffering
Going Through Great Suffering
Going Through Great Suffering
Job, who was known as a righteous man, experienced suffering upon suffering.
As a wealthy man in the East, he suddenly lost all his possessions. Then, while his ten children were celebrating a birthday feast at the home of his eldest son, a great storm caused the house to collapse, and they were all killed. Job said, “The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”
Then painful sores appeared all over his body, from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. He had to scrape himself with a piece of broken pottery. How could such a terrible tragedy happen to a righteous man? Anyone who saw him must have been deeply heartbroken. His wife even told him, “Curse God and die.” Perhaps death seemed better than continuing to live in such misery.
When three of Job’s friends heard about his suffering from a distance, they contacted one another and came to visit him, intending to comfort and console him. When they saw him from afar, they could hardly recognize him because of how terribly he had changed. They wept, tore their clothes, and threw dust on their heads, expressing the deepest possible pain and sorrow.
Then they sat beside Job without saying a word. They simply remained with him in his suffering. They had no words, so they shared his pain through their presence. This was an expression of love and compassion that was more important than words. Through the presence of these friends, Job must have received much comfort and strength.
After seven days of silence, Job began to speak by cursing the day of his birth. He said that if only he had never been born, he would not have had to endure such suffering. This is a thought that people often have when they experience extreme hardship.
Once the conversation began, one statement led to another. They began to ask why Job was suffering. Could anyone suffer without having sinned? His friends spoke about his supposed sins and urged him to repent. But Job called them “physicians of no value” because their words only increased his pain. In his pride, he insisted on his innocence, and their endless argument continued.
They could speak only about what they could see. They did not know what was happening in the unseen spiritual world—that Satan was behind these events and that God had permitted them.
Satan believed that Job's righteousness came from his wealth and good health. He was convinced that if everything Job possessed were taken away, Job would surely turn against God. Therefore, Satan brought one suffering after another upon Job. Yet God did not permit Satan to take Job's life.
Satan, the ruler of the power of the air, goes throughout the world seeking those who love God and are loved by God. He brings trials and suffering upon them in an attempt to destroy their relationship with God.
This began in the Garden of Eden. Satan used lies to deceive Adam and separate him from God, and because he achieved a victory there, Satan has continued to use the same strategy against God's people, just as he did with Job.
The important truth is that even Satan remains under God's authority. When we understand this, we can stand firm and overcome the many trials and temptations Satan brings.
Jesus Himself was tempted by Satan to satisfy three basic human desires. But Jesus overcame every temptation by honoring God and standing firmly on the Word of God. He defeated Satan and began His ministry as our Savior, showing us the way to overcome the same temptations of Satan that we face today.
We may go through many kinds of suffering and difficulties, but behind them there may be Satan's temptations. At the same time, we can know that nothing happens outside the permission of our loving Father God. He holds us and protects us. When we know and believe this, we can stand firm in faith and overcome.
If we accept the truth that God is our loving Father and that we are His beloved children, then no matter what suffering or difficulty we face, we can endure it and overcome it through faith. In the end, we will give thanks to our Father and praise Him.

United, We Live
United, We Live
United, We Live
There is a familiar saying among us: “United, we live; divided, we die.” This saying is true in our everyday lives. I believe that no one can truly live entirely alone.
This is especially true for immigrants. In the early days of immigration, many people arrived in a strange land with dreams for a new life. Yet they had no one they knew and no one to welcome them. They were a minority living among a predominantly white society whose language and culture were different from their own. Finding an apartment, sending their children to school, and getting a job were not easy.
Then Korean churches began to emerge. With the conviction that we can survive and flourish when we come together, people gathered to share information and help one another with the practical challenges of life. Above all, they worshiped God, who governs history and the world, and received strength to face another week in this new society.
Even though some people in the surrounding community treated Koreans as foreigners and told them, “Go back to your own country,” the church became the center of the Korean community and continued to grow.
In the early days of the Book of Acts, there were only a small number of Christians. But when the Holy Spirit came upon them and gave them power to proclaim the Word, three thousand people repented and believed, becoming a new community of faith. Filled with the joy and wonder of experiencing salvation, they gathered together, shared meals, and expressed love for one another.
As their numbers increased, society began to feel threatened and opposition arose because they were regarded as members of a strange new sect. This made it even more important for them to remain together. With great joy and gratitude, they shared what they had. They did not insist on calling their possessions their own, but willingly gave them for the sake of the community so that they could live together in love.
They chose the way of community, united their strength in proclaiming the gospel of salvation, and eventually the gospel spread from Jerusalem to Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Because of that movement, we too have received the gospel.
Koreans are known for their strong sense of independence and intelligence, and many have built successful lives even in unfamiliar lands. The church played a central role in helping them establish themselves. Yet once their lives became more stable, I have seen many leave the church and move forward on their own.
Of course, this can be an expression of personal growth, independence, and a desire to take on new challenges. But as the wise writer says, “Two are better than one.” If we can lower our pride in our own abilities just a little, recognize the value of others, and live with the conviction that we are stronger when we stand together, we can accomplish far more than we could ever accomplish alone.
In the early days of American immigration, people thought that everyone who came into the great “melting pot” of America would melt together and become one. But after a generation passed, we discovered that America was more like a salad bowl, in which each group retained its own identity. Koreans remained Korean, Filipinos remained Filipino, and Central Americans remained Central American.
When people of the same background come together, they can still develop strength and make a meaningful contribution. But what is most important is to recognize that we need one another rather than trying to live alone. We must acknowledge and accept one another, make room for one another, and humbly receive one another as brothers and sisters.
For this to happen, the Holy Spirit must be at work, and the church must stand at the center. We need hearts filled with wonder and gratitude for Jesus, who saved us, and for the great love of God.
Let us praise and thank God, who loved us and bound us together as one church through the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. And let us look forward to seeing the kind of social influence and transformation that took place in the early church taking place again through our church today.
United, we live. Together, in Christ, we can become a greater blessing to the world.

Why Appearance?
Why Appearance?
Why Appearance?
Many years ago, when I was traveling to Korea on a Korean Air flight, I noticed that the faces of several female flight attendants looked so much alike that it was difficult to tell them apart. They had all undergone plastic surgery, and before the surgery they had chosen one of several possible facial types. Apparently, they had chosen the same type.
Because appearance is what people see, they wanted to present pleasant faces to passengers and make them feel good. Since appearance is what can be seen, everyone tends to place great importance on it.
In the early days of immigration, I once visited a family who lived with their mother in a tiny one-room apartment. There was hardly enough space even for me to sit down. Yet their son had bought a Cadillac and was sleeping in the car at night.
Why would he do such a thing? He wanted to look successful in the eyes of people who judged others by their appearance. But the reality of his life was hidden from view.
When Samuel, as a man of God, was sent to the house of Jesse to choose a new king to replace Saul, whom God had rejected, Jesse brought his sons before Samuel one by one. When Samuel saw Eliab, the firstborn, he thought that his height and appearance were surely suitable for a king. But the LORD had already rejected him. God told Samuel, “People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
All seven of Jesse's older sons appeared before Samuel, but God said that none of them was the one He had chosen. From their outward appearance, they all seemed well qualified, so it must have been difficult for Samuel to understand why God rejected them all. Yet God was looking at something that Samuel could not see.
People naturally judge and make decisions based on outward appearance. When Jesus was invited to eat with His disciples, the Pharisees criticized them because they ate without first washing their hands. They considered the food they touched with unwashed hands to be defiled.
But Jesus taught that it is not what enters a person from the outside that defiles him. Rather, it is what comes from within. He said that from within, from the human heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness (Mark 7:21–22). These are the things that truly defile a person.
We look at outward appearance, but these things are invisible. If we could see all of them in one another, how could anyone live closely with another person?
It is like a tomb containing a decaying body and giving off a foul smell, while the outside of the tomb is decorated with flowers and made beautiful. People see the decorated exterior and may be pleased with it, without knowing what is inside.
When people marry and establish a family, however, they gradually discover that the inner person is more important than outward appearance. At the time of marriage, people are often attracted by outward conditions—appearance, possessions, education, social position, and other visible qualities. Yet one survey of one hundred married men and women reportedly found that only twenty women were satisfied with their marriages, while only three men were satisfied. Whether or not those exact numbers are reliable, they certainly remind us of the realities that can emerge within a family.
But what about a person whose outward appearance is lacking while the inner person is truly valuable?
Jesse told Samuel that there was still his youngest son, but he was out tending the sheep. He was the last of the sons and apparently was not even considered important enough to be brought to the gathering.
Samuel said, “Send for him. We will not sit down to eat until he arrives.”
When David came, he was described as having a healthy, ruddy appearance, beautiful eyes, and a handsome face. But what mattered most was not what Samuel saw with his eyes. The LORD saw David's heart.
God chose David because he was a man after His own heart, and through David He accomplished His purposes in Israel and brought about a great part of Israel's history.
Then why do human beings focus so much on outward appearance?
Perhaps if we could see everything inside a person, we would discover many of the ugly things already mentioned. It might become difficult even to draw close to one another. And when we saw such things within ourselves, we might become disappointed and discouraged with ourselves and be tempted to hide behind hypocrisy.
Perhaps, therefore, God has allowed us to live by what can be seen rather than by constantly seeing the deepest parts of one another's hearts. We decorate our appearance, appreciate beauty, and find joy in what is pleasant to see.
Yet even when people are imperfect, living together, getting to know one another, adjusting to one another, and seeking harmony are also things the Lord desires for us. Through this, He teaches us to have greater generosity, hope, faith, and patience.
For all of this, we praise the Lord.

Hiding in Fear
Hiding in Fear
Hiding in Fear
When we are children, we often play hide-and-seek. We hide ourselves while calling out, “Hide well! I can see your hair!” Then we let our little children search for us and allow them to experience the joy of finding us. It is much like the joy of finding a hidden treasure. But when someone has committed a crime and is being investigated, hiding is very different. Such a person hides out of fear, knowing what he has done wrong and fearing the punishment he may receive. When the authorities search for and find someone who is wanted, there may be a sense of satisfaction for those who are seeking him, but the person who is caught will feel shame and fear.
The first account of someone hiding in fear appears in Genesis 3. There we read about Adam, the first man created by God, and the woman whom God made for him. God desired to be in fellowship with them, and they honored God and shared love with one another. One day, the two became ashamed of their nakedness and covered themselves with leaves. Then, when they heard the sound of God coming near, they hid among the trees because they were afraid. When God called them, they spoke for the first time about their nakedness and their fear. God made them understand that this had happened because they had eaten the fruit that He had commanded them not to eat.
Rather than simply admitting their wrongdoing, they explained how it had happened, as though they did not fully recognize that what they had done was sin. Adam said that the woman had given him the fruit, and the woman said that the serpent had persuaded her to eat it. God held the serpent accountable and declared that it would crawl on its belly and eat dust all its life. He also declared that there would be enmity between the serpent and the woman, and between their offspring: the woman's offspring would crush the serpent's head, while the serpent would strike his heel.
Here we see something important. Before receiving its punishment, the serpent does not appear to recognize that what it has done is wrong. Adam and the woman likewise knew that they were naked, felt shame, and hid in fear, but rather than recognizing that their actions had brought about these consequences, they merely explained how the event had happened. The serpent becomes an instrument of Satan, tempting humanity into sin. Adam also receives punishment and eventually comes to understand how serious and destructive his disobedience was. This was not an isolated incident. Its consequences would continue to affect humanity throughout the generations.
The conflict between the woman's offspring and the serpent would continue. The ancient serpent, Satan, continues to tempt and wound people, but the offspring of the woman will crush his head and ultimately put an end to his power.
When Jesus, the Son of God and the promised offspring of the woman, came into the world, Satan also tempted Him in three fundamental areas of human weakness: what we eat, what we see, and what can make us proud. Yet Jesus resisted every temptation and caused Satan to depart from Him. Satan was not immediately removed from the world, however. The reality of history is that he continues to tempt people whenever he finds an opportunity, seeking to cause them to fall, although his ultimate defeat has already been determined.
Jesus took upon Himself the punishment for all human sin, whether committed knowingly or unknowingly. He died on the cross, paying the price for sin, and rose again on the third day, opening the way to life. He demonstrated His love for humanity by giving eternal life to everyone who believes in Him.
Some people may sin deliberately, knowing that they are doing wrong. Others may fall into sin without fully understanding what they are doing, simply following the circumstances of life. Yet sin is still sin, and there is no way to escape its consequences by our own efforts. Even the Pharisees, who claimed to have kept the law, were confronted by Jesus because of their many sins, including pride and hypocrisy. Paul tells us that there is no one who is without sin. This is the reality of humanity, and therefore no one can say that he does not need the saving work of Jesus.
First, I must personally depend upon the Lord's grace and love, receive His forgiveness and salvation, and then lead those who are facing death because of sin to the Lord so that they may believe and receive life. Beyond that, I am called to proclaim the gospel of life. We should strive together even more to receive with gratitude and share the love of God, who enables us to recognize our sin and shows us the way to life, and the way of salvation that Jesus graciously provides.
Then, rather than hiding in fear because of sin, people will enter into a close and loving relationship with the eternal God. And in that relationship, the kingdom of the Lord will be revealed among us.
