하나님의 침묵 The Silence of God

태초에 말씀이 계시니라 이 말씀이 곧 하나님이라 한 것처럼 하나님은 말씀이라 말씀으로 천지를 지으시고 축복하신다. 숨어 있는 아담을 찾아 대화하시고 아브라함에게 복덩어리라 말씀하시고 이집트에서 노예로 고생하는 히브리인의 신음소리를 듣고 양을 치는 모세를 찾아 자기를 알리며 그들을 해방시키라 하셨다. 이스라엘을 분리시킨 여로보암이 송아지 제단에 제사할 때 이름 없는 사람을 보내어 말씀한대로 제단이 갈라지고 악한 아합에게 비를 내리지 않겠다고 하시더니 3년6개월 우로가 그쳤다. 하나님은 말씀하시고 그 말씀대로 행하신다.

그런데 이 하나님이 침묵하실 때가 있다. 경건하여 하나님의 인정받는 욥이 죽음 같은 고통을 겪으며 부르짖어도 아무 응답이 없다. 다윗이 원수에게 쫓기고 시달리며  부르짖고 잠을 자지 못하여도 대답이 없다. 선지자 하박국은 나라가 위기를 맞아 부르짖으며 언제까지인가 외치지만 혼자인 것 같았다. 예수께서 십자가에 달려 고통속에서 나의 하나님 나의  하나님,  어찌하여 나를 버리셨나이까 외치는데도 아무 도움이 없다. 하나님은 침묵하신다. 하나님이 정말 계신가 의심하고  하나님이 없다 하며 떠나기도 하고 하나님의 원수가 되기도 한다. 말씀하시기를 좋아하는 하나님이 사랑하는 이가 고통 중에 부르짖는데도 어찌 침묵하고 말씀이 없으실 까?

고통중의 욥은 위로하러 온 친구들로 오히려 더 심한 고통은 겪으며 죽고 싶어도 죽음이 피하는 때에 드디어 하나님이 폭풍가운데서 욥을 부르며 무지한 말로 생각을 어둡게 하는 자 누구인가 너는 대장부처럼 대답하라 말씀하고 질문하신다. 내가 땅의 기초를 놓을 때 네가 어디 있었나 깨달았거든 말하라 하시며 자연에서 보는 많은 것으로 질문하신다. 욥은 대답하지 못하며 하나님이 자기에게 하시는 일도 알 수가 없고 말할 수도 없다. 욥이 하나님이 하시는 일을 어찌 알겠나? 하나님은 자기가 신뢰하는 욥을 두고 사탄과 게임하고 있다고 알려줄 수 있을까!  사탄은 하나님의 허락을 받아 생명 이외의 모든 수단으로 하나님을 떠나게 하려 했지만 욥이 넘어지지 않도록 하나님은 그를 책임지고 붙드셨다. 욥은 엎드려 부족을 인정하고 친구들을 위하여 중보하자 이전 보다 더 좋은 상태로 모든 것이 회복되었다. 

다윗은 고난 속에서 든든히 서고 강한 군사로 훈련되었다. 하박국은 일상 속에서 되는 일이 없어도 그는 하나님으로 인하여 기뻐하는 믿음을 보였다. 아들 예수께서 심자가의 고난을 당할 때 아버지 하나님은 얼굴을 돌리셨는지 해가 빛을 잃기도 하였지만 인간 죄의 값을 치루는 죽음을 겪으시고 부활하심으로 그가 인류의 구주가 되는 길을 여셨다. 대신 죽으신 주님이 아니면 우리가 어디서 구원과 영생을 찾을 수 있겠나! 하나님은 침묵하는 시간에도 우리를 변함 없이 사랑하고 같이하여 우리를 세우시고 믿음을 더하시며 생명 구원의 일을 하고 계심을 안다면 우리는 그의 침묵에 대하여 여전히 감사하며 기뻐하지 않을까! 바울은 지금의 고난은 장차 임할 영광과 족히 비교할 수 없다고 한다. 

지금 어떤 고난을 겪으며 기도로 부르짖는가? 응답이 있는가? 아니면 하나님의 침묵과 무관심을 느끼며 더욱 고통스럽지는 않은가? 나를 향한 하나님의 사랑과 신실하심을 확인할 수 있는가? 나를 위한 하나님의 계획이 이루어질 것을 믿을 수 있는가? 믿음의 선진들과 주님의 뒤를 따른다는 기쁨과 감격으로 오늘의 고난을 감당하며 이길 수 있겠나?

The Silence of God

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God. Just as it is written, God is the Word. He created the heavens and the earth through His Word and blessed them. He sought out Adam, who was hiding, to converse with him; He called Abraham a blessing; He heard the cries of the Hebrews suffering as slaves in Egypt and revealed Himself to Moses, who was tending sheep, commanding him to lead them to freedom. When Jeroboam, who divided Israel, offered sacrifices on the calf altar, God sent an unnamed man to proclaim His word, causing the altar to split apart. He declared to the wicked Ahab that there would be no rain, and for three and a half years, the land remained dry. God speaks, and He acts according to His Word.

Yet, there are times when God is silent. Job, a righteous man who was recognized by God, cried out in agony as he endured suffering akin to death, but there was no response. David, pursued and tormented by his enemies, cried out through sleepless nights, but heard no answer. The prophet Habakkuk, witnessing his nation in crisis, pleaded, “How long, Lord?” yet felt utterly alone. Even Jesus, hanging on the cross in anguish, cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” yet no help came. God remained silent.

At such times, people begin to doubt whether God truly exists. Some even abandon Him, declaring that He is not real, while others become His adversaries. How can a God who delights in speaking remain silent when those He loves cry out in suffering?

Job, in his suffering, found no comfort even from his friends who came to console him. When he longed for death, but death eluded him, God finally spoke out of the storm, calling Job and questioning him: “Who is this that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge? Answer me like a man!” God asked Job where he was when the foundations of the earth were laid and questioned him using many aspects of nature. Job was unable to respond—he could not comprehend God’s ways or explain His actions. How could Job understand what God was doing? Could God have told Job that He was allowing Satan to test him because He trusted him? Satan, with God’s permission, tried every means—except taking Job’s life—to make him abandon God. But God upheld Job, ensuring he would not fall. When Job humbled himself, acknowledged his limitations, and interceded for his friends, everything was restored to him, even better than before.

David, through his suffering, became a strong warrior, trained in battle. Habakkuk, even when nothing seemed to go right in his daily life, displayed faith by rejoicing in God. When Jesus endured the suffering of the cross, God the Father seemed to turn His face away—the sun even lost its light. But through His sacrificial death, Jesus paid the price for humanity’s sin and, through His resurrection, opened the way to salvation for all mankind. Without the Lord who died in our place, where else could we find salvation and eternal life?

Even in His silence, God loves us unwaveringly. He remains with us, strengthens our faith, and continues His work of life and salvation. If we truly understand this, would we not still be thankful and rejoice in His silence? The apostle Paul said, “Our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”

Are you going through suffering now? Are you crying out to God in prayer? Do you feel His response, or do you experience only silence and indifference, making the pain even harder to bear? Can you still trust in God’s love and faithfulness toward you? Do you believe that God’s plan for you will come to pass? Can you endure today’s suffering with joy and gratitude, knowing that you are following in the footsteps of the faithful who came before you, and of the Lord Himself?

외국에서 나그네 A Stranger in a Strange Land

미국에 살면서 네 나라로 돌아가라는 말을 들어보았나?  나는  80년대 뉴욕 주택가의 미국교회를 빌려 목회하는데 주일 저녁에는 백인목사의 만국침례교회가 모이며 주차장은 없는데다 주일에는 종일 3교회가 번갈아 모였기에 매우 복잡하였다. 우리 어린아이들이 이웃집 강아지와 장난을 하는데 주인이 화가 나서 네 나라로 돌아가라는 막말을 퍼부었다. 

한번은 본교회 목사가 모임을 갖자고 두 목사를 불러 갔더니  동리 사람들이 교회로 모여 들었다. 예상하지 못하던 일이었다. 어떻게 이웃과 좋은 관계를 맺을 것인가 하는 것이다. 침례교회 목사가 먼저 사과를 하며 조심하겠다고 한다. 나는 주께 의탁하며 나가 불편을 끼쳐 미안하다고 말한 뒤 계속 말을 이었다. 그들은 폴란드 이민 후손이기에 초창기 이민의 삶을 기억시키면서 우리는 이민1세로 언어와 문화가 다른 곳에서 함께 모이는 필요성을 말하고 우리는 한국에서 교육 받은 자들로 미국 정부의 초청과 허락을 받아와 여기서 열심히 일하고 세금 내며 좋은 시민으로 살고 있다. 정부에서 살도록 불러주었으니 서로 용납하고 같이 살자고 권유하였다. 이미 많은 사람이 떠났지만 남은 사람들은 내 말에  동의하였고 그후에는 좋은 관계로 대화하며 잘 지나다가 나중 그 교회를 매입하여 들어갔다.  그렇지만 생김새와 색갈이 다른 것으로 우리 이민은 항상 이방에서 객이 된 느낌을 가지는 것이 사실이다. 

모세는 이집트에서 출생하여 나일강에 버려지고 왕궁에서 양육받았지만 살인자로 미디안에 도망하여 살며 결혼하고 아이를 낳아 이름을 게르솜 이방에서 객이 되었다(출2:22)고 하였다. 그는 자기 지위와 능력에도 불구하고 이방에서 객이었다. 여기에 근거하여 작가 로버트 하인라인 Robert A Heinlein은 1961년 과학소설 외국에서 나그네라는 책을 내고 다음해 최우수 작품상을 받았다. 우주선 Envoy가 화성에 도착하며 통신이 두절되었다. 25년후 우주선Champion이 화성에 도착하니 이전 Envoy선원은 모두 죽었으나 거기에서 태어난 발렌타인 마이클 스미스는 생존하여 화성인이 양육하여 자라났는데 챔피언이 그를 지구로 데리고 가게 하였다. 스미스는 지구인으로 태어났으나 화성에서 자랐기에 전혀 다른 문화세계로 들어왔다. 그는 부자 능력자로 알려지고 엘리트들과 교제하였지만 지구 문화에 적응하지 못하고 자신의 화성문화를 펼치고자 성과 술 도막이 자유롭고 사람이 마음대로 자행하는 교회를 창설하였으나 그는 결국 죽임을 당한다. 그는 지구인이나 지구에서 외국인으로 살았던 것이다.

여기서 자라는 우리 자녀들의 형편은 어떠한가? 미국에 오래 살다가 조국에 돌아가면 스스로 어울리지 못하는 외국인이요 그렇다고 미국에 와도 여전히 주변인임을 느낀다.  우리만 아니다.

하나님의 아들 예수께서 자기 땅에 오매 자기 백성이 영접하지 않았고  여우도 굴이 있고 공중의 새도 집이 있지만 자기는 머리 둘 곳이 없다고 하며 나그네로 살았다. 그러면서 나그네처럼 사는 소외자들 세리와 죄인의 친구가 되고 가난하고 병든 자와 함께 하였다. 나그네로 나그네를 알고  사랑하였다.  믿음의 조상들이 세상에서는 외국인과 나그네로 살았다. 믿음으로 사는 자들이 세상에서 겪는 일이기에 베드로와 바울은 성도들을 나그네와 행인 같다고 하며 서로 위로와 사랑을 나누라고 권한다.

우리가 어디서 안정된 삶을 살수 있을까? 주께서 예비하신 영원한 나라다.우리의 장막집이 무너지면 우리에게 영원한집이 있고 우리는 아버지의 자녀로 영원한 나라를 상속받아 찬양과 감사로 살 날을 바라본다. 

 

A Stranger in a Strange Land

Have you ever been told to “go back to your country” while living in America?

In the 1980s, I was pastoring a church in a New York residential neighborhood, renting a building from an American church. On Sunday evenings, a white pastor’s International Baptist Church would gather there. The church had no parking lot, and since three congregations used the building throughout the day, Sundays were particularly chaotic.

One day, our young children were playing with a neighbor’s dog when the owner, visibly angry, hurled the words, “Go back to your country!”

On another occasion, the main church pastor called for a meeting with the two other pastors, and unexpectedly, local residents also gathered at the church. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss how to build good relationships with the neighbors. The Baptist pastor was the first to apologize, promising to be more careful. Trusting in the Lord, I too stepped forward and apologized for any inconvenience we had caused. Then, I continued speaking.

Since many of them were descendants of Polish immigrants, I reminded them of their own ancestors’ experiences. I explained that as first-generation immigrants, we gathered here because we needed a space to worship in our own language and culture. I also emphasized that we were well-educated individuals from Korea, invited and permitted by the U.S. government to live here, working diligently, paying taxes, and striving to be good citizens. I urged them to accept us and live together in harmony, just as the government had welcomed us.

While many had already left the meeting, those who remained agreed with my words. From then on, our relationship with the community improved, and we were able to engage in meaningful conversations. Eventually, we purchased the church building and made it our own.

However, the truth remains: as immigrants, our different appearance and skin color often make us feel like strangers in a foreign land.

Moses was born in Egypt, abandoned in the Nile, raised in the palace, and later fled to Midian as a fugitive. There, he married, had a son, and named him Gershom, saying, “I have been a foreigner in a foreign land” (Exodus 2:22). Despite his status and abilities, Moses was still an outsider.

Inspired by this idea, author Robert A. Heinlein published the science fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land in 1961, which won the Best Novel award the following year. The story follows a spaceship, Envoy, that lands on Mars, only to lose all communication with Earth. Twenty-five years later, another ship, Champion, arrives and discovers that all Envoy crew members have perished. However, one survivor remains—Valentine Michael Smith, who was born on Envoy and raised by Martians. Champion brings Smith back to Earth, where he is recognized as both immensely wealthy and highly capable. He mingles with the elite but struggles to adapt to Earth’s culture. In response, he establishes a church based on Martian customs, embracing free love, alcohol, gamble, and unrestricted personal expression. Ultimately, however, he is killed. Although he was born a human, he lived as an outsider on Earth.

What about our children who grow up here?

When we return to our homeland after years in America, we often feel like foreigners in our own country. Yet, even in the U.S., we remain outsiders. This struggle is not unique to us.

Jesus, the Son of God, came to His own people, but they did not receive Him. He once said, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head” (Matthew 8:20), living as a wanderer. But He chose to befriend other outcasts—tax collectors, sinners, the poor, and the sick. As a stranger Himself, He understood and loved fellow strangers.

The forefathers of faith also lived as foreigners and sojourners in this world. Because of this, Peter and Paul urged believers to see themselves as pilgrims, encouraging them to share love and comfort with one another.

Where, then, can we find a truly settled life?

It is in the eternal kingdom that the Lord has prepared. When our earthly tents collapse, we will have an everlasting home, inheriting the kingdom as God’s children, where we will live in eternal praise and gratitude.

경주에서  직장 생활하며 결혼하여 첫 딸을 낳고 넉 달이 되어 나는 신학교에 입학하여 서울로 가고 아내와 딸은 시댁으로 가서 얼마간 살기로 하였다. 신학생으로 자립을 위해 야간학교에서 가르치고 주말에는 전도사로 교회 일에 분주하게 지나기에 아내와 아이를 자주 보러 가지도 못하였다. 어느 날 꿈에 내 딸이 홍수에 떠내려 가고 있었다.  벌떡 잠에서 깨었으나 연락할 전화도 카톡도 이메일도 없었다.  날이 밝아 고향으로 갔더니 아이는 급성 폐염으로 친구가 일하는 경주 기독병원에 입원하고 있었다. 눈을 감은 아이의 이마와 양쪽 팔에는 줄을 달아 약을 넣고 있고 아내는 24시간 돌보느라 많이 지쳐 있다. 나의 부족을 느끼며 아픈 가슴으로 다가가 아이 머리에 손을 얹으며 이름을 불렀다. 열 달이 된 아이는 눈을  뜨고 쳐다보며 아빠 하고 부른다. 그가 내게 한 첫 말이다. 순간 내 가슴에서 사랑과 정이 솟아 오른다.  아빠 엄마는 어린아이가 말을 배우며 처음으로 하는 말이다. 나를 낳고 돌보는 이가 엄마요 아빠라 입술을 열면서 엄마 아빠가 자연스럽게 나오기에.이는 세계 공통적인 말이다. 신약에는 아빠, 미국에는 파파로 통용된다.  나를 낳고 사랑하며 함께 하는 친근하고 다정한 처음 관계를 표현하는 말이다.  아빠 하면 당신은 나를 낳았어요,  나는 당신의 딸 (아들)이요, 나는 당신의 사랑을 받고 있어요, 나도 당신을 사랑해요 하는 인격적인 표현이다. 아빠라는 말을 듣는 기쁨과 감격으로 평생 사랑의 빚진 심정으로 아이를 돌보고 책임지는 것 같다. 

예수께서 하나님을 향하여 아빠 아버지라 부르며 기도하셨다. 바울은 우리 성도들이 하나님을 아빠 아버지라 부른다고 하였다. 예수님이나 우리나 하나님의 자녀로 태어났다. 우리가 주를 믿음으로 거듭나서 새로운 피조물로 태어났으니 우리에게는 나를 낳아 주신 부모님이 계시지만 우리는 하나님의 새로운 생명으로 낫기에 하나님을 향하여 아빠하고 부른다. 나는 가끔 하나님께서 나를 안고 내 머리를 쓰다듬으며 너는 내 아들이다 너를 사랑한다 하시는 음성을 들으며 나는 그를 쳐다보며 아빠 나는 사랑 받는 아들입니다 나도 아빠를 사랑해요 하며 둘이 하나됨을 경험한다.

아빠라면 멀리 있으나 가까이 있으나 항상 자기 아이에게 관심과 사랑이 가고 그의 필요를 채우며 책임진다. 하나님께서 나에게 그렇게 하시는 것을 본다. 내가 어디에 있든지 그는 항상 나와 함께 하신다. 한국에서나 미국,  세계 어디에서나 함께 하심을 확인시켜 주신다. 내가 처한 형편과 필요를 아시고 돌보아 주신다. 자신이 힘들고 희생하더라도 빚진 심정으로 자식을 위하는 이가 아빠시다. 

그런데 아빠가 외면할 때가 있다. 예수께서 십자가를 앞두고 아빠 아버지 이 진을 지나가게 하소서 그러나 내 뜻이 아니라 아버지의 뜻대로 하옵소서. 그 잔은 지나가지 않고 예수께서 십자가 고통을 당하며 어찌하여 나를 버리셨나이까? 절규하시는데 아버지는 얼굴을 돌리시는지 해가 빛을 잃었다. 이를 통하여 하나님은 온 세상을 구원하시는 큰 뜻을 이루시고 이를 위하여 아들을 세상에 보내셨기에 아들은 다 이루었다 하시고 생을 마치셨다. 아들의 죽음이 없이는 나의 구원이 일어나지 않는다. 주님의 고난을 기억하는 사순절기간 아빠의 사랑과 구원을 나누기 위하여 나는 어떻게 하여야 할까!.

어느 목사 부인이 공원 호수 주위를 묵상하며 걷고 (Medication Walk)있는데 부드러운 음성이 들렸다. 예야 네 남편에게 잘 해 주어라 그는 내 사랑하는 아들이다 하는 것이다. 그 이야기를 남편에게 말하자 그는 감사하며 생각한다. 영접하는 자 곧 그 아들의 이름을 믿는 자에게는 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 주셨지! 하는데 주께서 말씀하신 것을 기억한다. 너희 원수를  사랑하고 선대하며 아무것도 바라지 말고 꾸어주라 그리하면 너희 상이 클 것이요 또 너희가 지극히 높으신 이의 아들이 되리라 (누가 6:35), 

그는 자기를 돌아본다. 시골 가난한 가정에서 부모가 열심히 일하고 정직하게 살면서 어려운 사람을 보면 언제나 도움을 베푸는 것을 보았다. 자식은 부모를 배우는지 대학에 진학한 때 50년대 말 나라 전체가 가난하여 시골의 젊은이들이 도시로 나가 구두닦이 신문팔이 가사도우미 등으로 일하면서 배우고 싶어하는 자들이 있기에 사범대학 기독학생들이 교회를 빌려 야간 고등 공민학교를 만들고 이들을 가르치는데 그를 초청하였다. 그는 대학 4년간 학교 공부보다 야간학교에 전념하였다. 나중 신학교에 갔을 때에도 야간학교를 섬겼다. 그의 바람이나 보상은 배운 학생들이 꿈을 가지고 사회에 나가 역량을 발휘하는 인물로 살아가는 것이었다. 그들 중에는 법관이나 교수가 된 자들이 있으니 감사였다. 

초기 이민목회에 어려움이 많은 것을 안다. 자기 마음에 맞지 않는다고 까닭 없이 목사에게 항거하고 원수 노릇하는 자들이 있다. 그는 주께 맡기며 성찬상에 누워 자기를 주께 드리기도 하였다.  죽은 자는 감정이 없다. 원수를 선대하고 축복하라는 말씀을 기억했다. 

한번은 어떤 청년이 찾아와 사업에 돈이 모자란다며 빌려 달라고 한다.  목사에게 무슨 돈이 있겠나! 그러나 믿고 찾아온 그를 실망시키지 않고자 최선을 다하여 빌려주었다. 은퇴식을 앞두고 교회는 목사에게 은퇴금을 책정하였다. 액수는 많지 않으나 고마운 일이다. 그와 가족이 그만큼 첨가하고 장학기금을 만들고자 재정장로에게 수표 두개로 만들게 하고 기금 수익으로 장학금을 지불하겠다는 두 기관 대표를 은퇴식에 초대하고 재정장로가 수표를 직접 전달하였다. 목사의 은행통장에 잔고가 없는 것을 아는 한 딸이 걱정하며 어떻게 살려 하는가 한다. 이민 올 때 빈손으로 왔지만 살았는데 하나님이 책임질 것이라며 위로하였다. 은퇴 후에 그는 목사 공백 교회의 임시 목회 자리에 부름을 받아 처음 맛보는 자유와 평화 기쁨을 누리고 심지어 아프리카의 신설 의과대학 교수선교사로 가서 사역하기도 하였다.  일을 정리하고 돌아와 다시 임시사역을 끝내고 집에 있는데 팬데믹이 생겼다, 어느 날 전화를 받으니 한 20년 전에 돈을 빌려간 청년이었다. 잊고 있었는데 그가 돈을 가지고 왔다. 빌려준 돈이 얼마인지 기억하지 못하는데 큰 액수다.  그는 아버지가 일찍 돌아갔기에 목사를 아버지라 부르겠다며 친근하게 대하고 만난다. 모든 것이 하나님의 은혜라 생각하는데 사모가 이는 내 사랑하는 아들이다 잘 해주어라 하는 음성을 들으니 원수를 선대하고 어려운 자를 돌보고 섬기는 자를  인정하시고 하나님이 자기 아들이라 하시는 확인을 받으니 그보다 더 큰 축복이 있을까! 부부는 감격하며 주를 찬양하고 주 앞에서 주와 함께 남은 생을 살기로 다짐한다고 한다. 

Son of the Most High

A pastor’s wife was taking a meditative walk around a lake in a park when she heard a gentle voice say, “My child, be good to your husband. He is my beloved son.”

When she told her husband about this, he gratefully reflected on it. He recalled the words of the Lord:

“Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12)

He also remembered another passage:

“Love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High.” (Luke 6:35)

Looking back on his life, he recalled his humble upbringing in a poor rural family. His parents worked hard, lived with integrity, and always helped those in need. Following their example, when he entered university in the late 1950s—a time when the entire nation was struggling with poverty—he saw many young people from rural areas moving to the cities, working as shoe shiners, newspaper sellers, and housemaids, all while yearning for education.

Christian students from the teacher’s college organized an evening high school in a church to educate these young workers, and he was invited to join them. For four years of university, he devoted himself more to the night school than to his own studies. Even after entering seminary, he continued serving in the night school. His greatest hope and reward were to see his students step into society with dreams and capabilities. Some of them later became judges and professors, which filled him with gratitude.

He knew well the hardships of early immigrant ministry. Some people, without reason, opposed the pastor and treated him as an enemy. Entrusting everything to the Lord, he even lay prostrate before the communion table, surrendering himself completely. A dead man has no emotions. He held onto the Lord’s command to love and bless his enemies.

One day, a young man came to him, saying he needed money for his business and asking for a loan. What money does a pastor have? But not wanting to disappoint the young man who had come in faith, he did his best and lent him the money.

As his retirement approached, the church set aside a retirement fund for him. Though the amount was not large, he was deeply grateful. He and his family decided to donate the same amount to establish a scholarship fund. He had the church’s financial elder prepare two checks, invited the representatives of two institutions that would distribute scholarships, and had the elder hand over the checks at his retirement ceremony.

One of his daughters, knowing he had little left in his bank account, worried and asked how he would manage. He comforted her, saying, “We came to this country empty-handed, yet God has always provided. He will take care of us.”

After retiring, he was invited to serve as an interim pastor for churches without a minister. For the first time, he experienced true freedom, peace, and joy. He even had the opportunity to serve as a missionary professor at a newly established medical school in Africa.

After completing his work and returning home, he finished his interim ministry and was resting when the pandemic struck.

One day, he received an unexpected phone call. It was the young man who had borrowed money from him about twenty years ago. He had completely forgotten about the loan, but the man showed up with the money—a significant sum. Since his father had passed away early, the man warmly called the pastor “Father” and treated him with deep affection.

Reflecting on this, the pastor saw everything as God’s grace. Then his wife heard the same gentle voice again:

“This is my beloved son. Be good to him.”

At that moment, they realized: to love enemies, to help the needy, and to serve others is to be recognized as a child of God. And what greater blessing could there be?

Overcome with gratitude, the couple praised the Lord and resolved to live the rest of their lives with Him.

하나님이 질투하시나? Is God Jealous? 

사람이 함께 살면서 서로 질투하는 경우가 많다. 생김새나 옷차림 집이나 자동차, 자녀교육과 진출,  직장이나 사업 등에서 나보다 나은 사람을 보면 부러워하면서 질투가 일어나고 미움으로 바뀌다가 그를 폄하하거나 해치려는 마음이 생긴다. 야곱의 애처 라헬은  언니 레아보다 남편의 사랑을 독차지하면서도 언니가 아들들을 낳자 그를 질투하여 남편에게 앙탈하는 것이나 야곱이 애처의 아들 요셉에게 채색 옷을 입히면서 그의 형들은 그를 미워하다가 없애고자 구덩이에 던져 넣고 지나가는 대상에게 팔아 넘기고 그의 옷에 피를 발라 아들 옷인가 확인하라고 아버지에게 보냈다. 질투하면 잠을 자지도 못하기에 솔로몬은 질투는 뼈를 썩게 한다고 하였다.

사람은 질투하는 것이 일상이지만 하나님이 질투하신다고 한다. 모세를 통하여 출애굽한 사람들에게 삶의 원리인 십계명을 주시며 첫째는 여호와 외에는 다른 신이 없다 둘째는 그들이 어떤 신의 형상도 만들어 섬기지 말고 다른 민족의 신을 섬기지 말라며 자기는 이름이 질투의 하나님, 여호와 카나 (YHWH Qana 출34:14_라 하신다. 여호와 하나님은 어떤 신과 비교할 수 없이 위대하고 전지전능하시다. 애굽에 내린 재앙들은 애굽의 신들에 대한 도전이다. 그는 유일한 하나님으로 어떤 신이라도 정복하시면서 어떻게 무력한 신들에 대하여 질투하고 분노하여 저주와 화를 선포하시나?

하나님의 형상으로 지음 받았기에 사람이 가지는 질투는 하나님에게서 나온 것임을 알 수 있다. 질투는 인격체로서 관계를 맺고 사는데 따라오는 생각과 감정의 한 표현이라면 하나님에게 질투가 있다는 것을 이해하게 된다. 여호와 카나의 질투는 극진히 보살핀다는 의미가 포함되어 있다. 관계를 깨뜨릴 수 없는 부부가 서로 극진히 사랑하며 사는데 아내가 어떤 다른 남자의 키스를 받거나 사랑하는 표현을 할 때 남편이 가지는 마음이 어떠할까? 꿈에서라도 질투하며 분노할 것이다.  그렇지 않다면 아내를 정말 사랑하는가 물어보아야 할 것이다.  사랑하기 때문에 질투하고 사랑하기 때문에 분노하는 것이다. 

하나님은 이스라엘 백성을 극진히 보살피고 사랑하신다. 그들을 노예생활에서 구출하기 위하여 그 나라에 재앙을 내리다가 마지막은 양을 잡아 그 피를 문에 바르고 가족이 집 안에서 고기를 먹게 하는 시간 그 나라의 초대생은 사람이나 가축이나 모두 죽임을 당하였다.  피흘리고 죽을 정도로 자기 사람을 사랑하여 구원하였다. 그렇게 사랑을 베풀면 사랑의 응답을 기대하는 것이 당연하지 않을까? 그 관계에 다른 것이 끼어들지 않게 할 것이다. 

허나님은 자기 백성을 아끼기에 그들이 헛된 것에 시간 정열 재물을 소비하는 것을 원하지 않으신다. 아무 도움을 주지 못하는 우상을 섬김이 헛된 것을 경고하신다.. 이스라엘은 보이지 않는 여호와 하나님보다 보이는 많은 신들에게 이끌리어 절하고 섬김으로 하나님의 진노를 받아 결국 나라는 멸망하고 성전은 파괴되었다.

오늘 우리 하나님은 우리를 죄와 죽음의 속박에서 해방시키려고 아들 예수의 피를 흘리고 희생하셨다. 예수를 믿고 영접하면여죄와 죽음에서 구출되고 영생을 얻은 자가 어떤 것을  하나님보다 더 사랑하겠나? 하나님의 질투를 일으키지 않겠나?. 예수께서는 우리 마음을 다하고 뜻을 다하고 힘을 다하여 주 우리 하나님을 사랑하라고 하신다. 이로서 주의 사랑과 축복을 대대로 이어갈 수 있을 것이다. 

Does God Get Jealous?

People often feel jealous while living together. When they see someone who is better than them in appearance, clothing, housing, cars, children’s education and career advancement, jobs, or businesses, they feel envious. This envy turns into jealousy, which then leads to hatred and, eventually, a desire to belittle or harm the other person. For example, Rachel, the beloved wife of Jacob, had all of her husband’s love, yet when her sister Leah bore sons, she became jealous and complained bitterly to her husband. Similarly, Jacob gave a richly ornamented robe to his beloved son Joseph, which led his brothers to hate him. Their jealousy drove them to throw Joseph into a pit, sell him to passing traders, and later deceive their father by covering his robe with blood, asking if it belonged to his son. Since jealousy can rob a person of sleep, Solomon stated, “Jealousy rots the bones.”

Jealousy is a common human emotion, yet the Bible states that God, too, is jealous. When God gave the Ten Commandments to the Israelites through Moses, He established them as principles of life. The first commandment states that there is no other god besides the Lord, and the second forbids making and worshiping any image or idol. God explicitly declares, “My name is Jealous” (YHWH Qanna, Exodus 34:14). The Lord God is incomparable—He is almighty and all-knowing. The plagues inflicted upon Egypt were a direct challenge to the gods of Egypt, proving that He is the one true God who overcomes all others. But how can an almighty God, who can conquer all false gods, still experience jealousy, anger, and wrath toward powerless idols?

Since humans are made in God’s image, the jealousy found in humans originates from God. If jealousy is an expression of thoughts and emotions that naturally arise in personal relationships, then it is understandable that God, too, possesses jealousy. The jealousy of YHWH Qanna includes the concept of deep care and devotion. Imagine a husband and wife who deeply love each other. If the wife were to receive affectionate gestures or a kiss from another man, how would the husband feel? Even in a dream, he would feel jealous and angry. If he did not, one might question whether he truly loves his wife. Love leads to jealousy, and love leads to righteous anger.

God deeply cares for and loves the people of Israel. To rescue them from slavery, He brought devastating plagues upon Egypt. The final plague required each Israelite household to sacrifice a lamb, smear its blood on their doorposts, and eat its meat indoors. That night, every firstborn in Egypt, both human and livestock, perished. God’s love for His people was so great that He shed blood and took lives to secure their freedom. Would it not be natural for Him to expect their love in return? He would not allow anything to come between that relationship.

Because God cherishes His people, He does not want them to waste their time, passion, and resources on meaningless things. He warns against idolatry because idols provide no help or salvation. Yet Israel, drawn to visible gods rather than the invisible Lord, bowed down and served them, provoking God’s wrath. As a result, their nation was ultimately destroyed, and the temple was torn down.

Today, God has sacrificed His Son, Jesus, shedding His blood to free us from the bondage of sin and death. If we have been saved and granted eternal life by believing in and accepting Jesus, what could we possibly love more than God? Would we not arouse His jealousy? Jesus commanded us to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” By doing so, we can continue to receive and pass down His love and blessings for generations to come.

기쁨의 파도 Waves of Jo 

1970년대 전문직 이민으로 의사 간호사가  많이 오며 중소도시 한인교회 목사는 이들을 영접하고 정착을 도왔다.의사는 인턴 레지던트로 병원에서 지나고 부인들은 시간이 남아 기존의사 부인과 같이 교회 행사를 만들고 함께 모이며 사모는 중요한 역할을 했으나 특히 한 사람이 사모의 인격을 모독하고 심지어 폭력적인 언사와 행동으로 괴롭혔다. 견디기 어려운 모멸을 당하며 사람을 만나고 싶지 않아 혼자 한국으로 도망할 생각까지 하며 자존감이 손상되어 사람을 피하고자 어느 주일 교육관의 고장 난 화장실에 들어가 숨었다. 냄새가 심하여 문을 조금 열었더니 본당에서의 찬송이 들린다.슬픈 마음 있는 사람 예수 이름 믿으면 길이 길이 변함 없는 기쁜 마음 얻으리…. 찬송을 들으며 나는 이게 뭐야? 물으며 억울하고 분한 마음이다. 자기도 모르게 찬송에 이끌려 본당으로 가 뒷자리에 앉는다. 눈물이 비 오듯 하는데 눈 앞에 현수막이 나타난다. 수고하고 무거운 짐 진 자들아 다 내게 오라.. 순간 자기를 누르는 무거운 짐을 벗어 주께 드렸다. 가벼움을 느끼는데 뒤에서 기쁨이 파도처럼 몰려와 그를 덮는다. 눈물과 파도에 밀리며 속에서도 기쁨이 올라온다.  내 짐은 쉽고 가볍다 내가 너를 쉬게 하리라는 위로의 말이 들린다. 무거운 짐에 눌려 신음하고 있을 때 주님은 그를 보고 찾아가 그의 짐을 맡으시고 그에게 자유와 기쁨을 주셨다. 

인생의 가장 무거운 짐은 죄와 죽음이다. 주께서 그 짐을 벗겨 주신 것을 깨닫는 순간에 파도 같은 기쁨을 갖는다. 이제 삶에 있는 경제 가족부양 자녀양육 대인관계 등 감당하기 힘들었던 짐은 모두 가벼운 것으로  기쁨의 물결로 변한다.  기쁨은 삶의 동력이 되고  환경을 초월하여 의욕과 희망을 주어  얼굴에  웃음이 있고 이웃에 기쁨을 전달하며 아름다운 관계를 이룩한다.

포도나무는 열매를 맺어야 모두에게 기쁨이다. 열매를 맺으려면 나무와 가지가 하나로 붙어 있어야 한다. 예수는 포도나무요 나는 가지라 내가 그 안에 그가  내 안에 곧 그의 말씀이 내 안에 있어 하나가 될 때 무엇이든지 원하는 대로 구하라 그리하면 이루리라 허신다. 우리가 받는 기도응답은 열매요 하나님이 영광을 받으시기에. 하나님은 자기 영광을 위하여 열매인 기도응답을 기뻐하신다.중요한 것은 믿음으로 그에게 나를 맡기고 하나가 되는 것이요 이것이 기쁨이다. 

주의 제자들이 사역하며 귀신이 항복한 것을 기뻐할 때 주께서는 그들의 이름이 하늘나라에 기록된 것으로 기뻐하라 하시고 자신은 성령으로 기뻐하셨다. 세상의 업적 성취가 기쁨이요 주의 나라에서 기억되는 것이 기쁨이지만 성령 하나님과  하나되는 것은 본질적인 기쁨이다. 우리가 하나님과 연합하면 서로의 기쁨이다. 여호와를 기뻐함으로 마음의 소원을 이루어 주시는 그 열매는 하나님과 우리에게 큰 기쁨이다.. 이제 다른 사람과의 관계에서 서로 믿음으로 마음을 열고 소통하며 서로 사랑하여 하나가 되고 상대방을  존귀하게 여기고 서로를 섬긴다면 생명인들 아까울까!  주께서 나를 사랑하여 나의 죄를 위하여 생명을 주심으로 내가 영생이라는 열매를 얻은 것은 기쁨의 파도가 역사한 것이 아닐까! 주의 사랑을 받아 죄에서 자유를 얻고 영생을 소유한 자로서 나는 밀려오는 기쁨과 사랑의 파도를 따라 살고 행할 것이 아닌가!

Waves of Joy

In the 1970s, with the wave of professional immigration, many doctors and nurses arrived in the United States. The pastors of Korean churches in small and medium-sized cities welcomed them and helped them settle. While doctors spent their time as interns and residents in hospitals, their wives, having more free time, organized church events alongside the wives of established doctors. The pastor’s wife played a crucial role in these activities. However, one doctor’s wife particularly mistreated her, insulting and even subjecting her to verbal and behavioral abuse and attack.

Enduring unbearable humiliation, she no longer wanted to meet people and even considered fleeing to Korea alone. Her self-esteem was shattered, and she sought to avoid others by hiding in a broken restroom in the church’s education building one Sunday. The stench was overwhelming, so she slightly opened the door, and at that moment, she heard a hymn from the sanctuary:

Take the name of Je-sus with you, Child of sor-row and of Woe;

It will joy and com-fort give you, Take it then Where'er you go.

As she listened, asking herself What about me? She was filled with resentment and sorrow. Yet, unknowingly drawn by the hymn, she made her way to the sanctuary and sat in the back. Tears flowed like rain, and suddenly, a banner in front of her seemed to stand out:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

At that moment, she laid down the heavy burden that had been crushing her and gave it to the Lord. She felt a sense of lightness, and then, from behind her, waves of joy surged over her, enveloping her completely. Despite her tears, joy welled up from within. She heard the words of comfort:

“My yoke is easy, and my burden is light. I will give you rest.”

When she had been groaning under the weight of her burdens, the Lord had seen her, approached her, taken her burden upon Himself, and given her freedom and joy.

The heaviest burdens in life are sin and death. The moment we realize that the Lord has lifted these burdens from us, we experience a wave of joy. Now, all the burdens of life—finances, supporting a family, raising children, and maintaining relationships—become light, transforming into waves of joy.

Joy becomes the driving force of life. It transcends circumstances, ignites motivation and hope, brings smiles to our faces, and spreads joy to others, fostering beautiful relationships.

A grapevine brings joy to all when it bears fruit. To bear fruit, the branches must remain connected to the vine. Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing. If my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” The answers to our prayers are the fruit we bear, bringing glory to God. God delights in these answers to prayer, for they glorify Him. The key is to entrust ourselves to Him in faith and become one with Him—that is joy.

When Jesus’ disciples rejoiced that demons submitted to them in their ministry, the Lord told them to rejoice instead that their names were written in heaven. He Himself rejoiced in the Holy Spirit. Achievements and success in the world bring joy, as does being remembered in the kingdom of God, but the ultimate joy is being united with the Holy Spirit. When we are united with God, we share in each other’s joy.

As we delight in the Lord, He fulfills the desires of our hearts. This fruit brings great joy to both God and us. Now, in our relationships with others, if we open our hearts in faith, communicate with love, become one, honor one another, and serve each other, what could be more precious than life itself?

The Lord loved me so much that He gave His life for my sins, granting me the fruit of eternal life. Was this not the work of the waves of joy? Having received the Lord’s love, been freed from sin, and gained eternal life, should I not now live and walk in the waves of joy and love that continue to flow?

높은 하늘에서 High in the Air

나는 독수리가 비상하는 그림을 벽에 붙여 두고 본다. 올라가 올라가 독수리 같이 찬송을 부르며 독수리가 하늘 높이 올라가듯이 나도 그렇게 힘차게 살고픈 마음이다. 

그러다 최근 독수리에 대하여 새로운 생각을 하게 된다.새 중에는 가장 높이 날아오르고 둥지도 높은 산 낭떠러지나 바위 위에 짓는 이유가 무엇일까? 아마도 자기 보호인 것 같다.  누구도 새끼에게 접근하지 못하게 하면서 자신도 어떤 것이 따라오지 못하도록 높이 오른다. 높은 하늘에서는 기류를 타고 상공을 즐기면서 다른 어떤 것이 침범하지 못하도록 올라가고 올라가며 모든 것이 자기 세상으로 느끼겠지만 동시에 자기 영역을.침해 당하는 불안이 있을 수도 있겠다. 독수리는 높이 올라가 즐기면서도 배가 고프면 그의 눈은 땅에 있는 먹이를 찾다가 발견하면 쏜 살 같이 내려 덮친다. 

루마니아 차우셰스쿠 통치자는 세계에서 최대 단일건물 펜타곤에  버금하는  인민궁전을 만들고 자기의 위력을 과시하며 김일성과 친하여 백성을 탄압 학살하며 독재하였다, 그가 인민궁전 곡대기층은 헬리콥터 승강장으로 지하층은 공항 직통의 지하도를 만든 것은 그만큼 불안하였던 것이다. 결국 그는 민중혁명에 잡히어 광장에서 무참하게 공개처형울 당하였다 네가 하늘에까지 높아지겠느냐? 음부에까지 낮아지리라 하시는 말씀이 이루어진 것이다. 

하나님은 하늘의 하늘도 용납할 수 없는 크고 높으신 분으로 그의 눈은 그가 만드신 모든 것을 보살피며 그가 보지 못하는 것이 없다. 하늘과 땅, 바다의 끝만 아니라 깊은 굴과 바다속을 일일이 다 보신다. 그는 가장 높이 하늘에 계시면서 땅을 굽어 살피신다. 어디 누군가 약하고 힘이 없어 고난 당하며 신음하는 자가 있는가를 보신다. 강대국 이집트에서 노예로 신음하는 자들을 보시다가 그들을 해방시키고 구원하셨다. . 

이새는 자기 아들 중에서 왕이 선택될 것이라는 것을 알고 잘 준비시켜 큰 아들부터 사무엘과 면담하게 한다. 사무엘은 하나님의 말씀 따라 왕이 될 자를 찾는다. 잘 생긴 큰 아들로 시작하여 일곱 아들을 다 보았지만 해당자가 없다고 하며 모든 아들이 다 왔는가 묻는다. 실망한 아버지는 막내가 있지만 그는 들에서 양을 치고 있는데 볼 것도 없다는 말투다. 그러나 하나님은 어리고 보잘것없는 다윗을 보고 계셨다. 내가 이새의 아들 다윗을 만나니 내 마음에 합한 자라 내 뜻을 이루리라 하시고는 그를 통하여 나라를 확정하고 나중 그의 자손에서 구주를 나게 하셨다. 다윗은 내 부모는 나를 버렸으나 하나님은 나를 영접하신다고 훗날 노래하였다. 

죽을 병에 걸려 멀리 남쪽 바다 끝 요양소에서 버림받듯 홀로 외롭게 지나는 자를 하나님이 찾아가 시139편으로 내가 너를 지었기에 네 몸의 부분 부분만 아니라 너의  생각까지 알고 살피며 함께 있다고 하시자 그는 말씀을 받아드리고  살 힘과 용기를 얻어 치유되고 평생을 주께 헌신하였다고 한다. 

하나님이 다윗을 찾은 때 그 나라 왕은 사울이었다. 사울은 겸손하게 시작하였으나 왕이 되자 교만하여 자리를 잃을 불안과 두려움,, 질투 시기로 사람을 죽이며 하나님을 떠나 대적하게 되자 하나님은 그를 낮추시고 그 자리에 다윗을 세우기로 하셨다. 여호와는 높이 계시면서 지금도 낮은 자를 굽어살피신다(시138:8) 나를 보고 계신다. 

High in the Sky

I put up a picture of an eagle soaring high on my wall and often look at it. Singing hymns like Rise Up, Rise Up Like an Eagle, I long to live my life with the same strength and determination as the eagle soaring into the sky.

Recently, I have been thinking differently about eagles. Why do they build their nests on high mountain cliffs or rocky peaks and fly higher than any other bird? It seems to be for their protection—keeping their young safe from intruders and ensuring that nothing can follow them as they ascend. In the high sky, they ride the air currents, enjoying the heights while keeping everything else at a distance. It must feel like the world belongs to them, yet at the same time, they may experience the anxiety of protecting their territory. Even while soaring high, an eagle will search the ground for food, and when it spots its prey, it dives like an arrow to seize it.

Nicolae Ceaușescu, the former ruler of Romania, built the Palace of the People—one of the largest buildings in the world, rivaling the Pentagon—to display his power. He maintained a close relationship with Kim Il-sung and ruled as a dictator, oppressing and massacring his people. The upper floors of his palace housed a helicopter landing pad, and the underground levels connected directly to an airport via secret tunnels—proof of his deep-seated paranoia. In the end, he was captured during a people’s revolution and publicly executed in a square. The words of Scripture were fulfilled: “Will you ascend to the heavens? You will be brought down to the depths of Sheol.”

God is so great and exalted that even the highest heavens cannot contain Him. His eyes watch over all that He has created, and there is nothing hidden from His sight. He sees not only the end of heavens, the earth, and the seas but also the depths of caves and the ocean floor. From the highest heaven, He looks down upon the earth to see those who are weak, suffering, and oppressed. When He saw the Israelites groaning under slavery in the powerful nation of Egypt, He set them free and delivered them.

When Jesse learned that one of his sons would be chosen as king, he carefully prepared his seven sons for a meeting with the prophet Samuel. Samuel, following God’s command, searched for the one who would be chosen by God. One by one, he met all seven of rhem, but none of them was the chosen one. He asked if there were any more sons, and Jesse, seemingly disappointed, mentioned his youngest son, who was tending sheep in the field, implying that he was not worthy of consideration. Yet, God had His eyes on this young and insignificant boy. “I have found David, son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will fulfill My will.” Through David, God established a kingdom, and from his descendants, the Savior was born. Later, David would sing, “Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me.”

A woman, suffering from a terminal illness and admitted to a sanatorium at the farthest edge of the southern sea, felt abandoned and utterly lonely. But God found her. Through Psalm 139, God spoke to her: “I created you. I know not only every part of your body but also your thoughts. I watch over you and am with you.” Receiving these words, she gained the strength and courage to live. Sje was healed and dedicated her life to God.

At the time God chose David, Israel’s king was Saul. Saul had started with humility, but as king, he became arrogant. As fear of losing his throne consumed him, he became insecure, jealous, and even murderous. He turned away from God and rebelled against Him. In response, God humbled Saul and chose David to take his place.

“The Lord is exalted, yet He looks upon the lowly” (Psalm 138:6). He is watching over me.

불러도 대답 없는 이름이여 부르다가 내가 죽을 이름이여! 김소월의 시 초혼의 한 구절이다. 우리 전통 상례에서 사람이 죽으면 초혼 예식으로 지붕을 향하여 이름을 세번 부르고 옷과 신을 던지며 잘 가라고 작별한다. 아무리 이름을 불러도 대답도 없고 돌아오지도 않는다. 나아 여든이 넘어도 여보, 응 여기 있어! 하는 것이 행복이다..

 특히 신의 이름을 부르는 것은 응답을 받기 위함이다. 나의 할머니는 집안 곳곳에 다른 신을 모셨다. 작은 아들이 심한 병이 들어 그는 섬기던 신에게 간절히 빌었으나 아무런 효험이 없었다. 멀리 사는 동서라 말한다. 예수 믿으면 병이 나을텐데 하는 말에 귀가 번쩍 열려 산 넘어 한 시간 거리에 있는 교회를 찾아가 예수를 믿고 기도하자 아들의 병이 나았다. 그가 섬기던 모든 신을 버리고 기도애 응답하신 그 분을 참 하나님으로 확인하고 마을 첫 그리스도인이 되고 그 믿음을 내게도 전하여 주셨다.

선지자 엘리야 시대 이스라엘은 여호와 하나님을 떠나 바알과  아세라 같은 신을 많이 믿었다. 3년 6개월 비가 내리지 않았지만 왕은 여전히 왕비와 같이 바알을 섬긴다. 엘리야는  어느 신이 참신인지 시험하자고 제안하여 바알 아세라 신을 섬기는 선지자 850명과 여호와 하나님을 섬기는 자기 한 사람이 갈멜산에 모였다. 제단을 쌓고 믿는 신의 이름을 불러 불을 내려 제물을 불태우는 신이 참신이라 하자고 하다. 수가 많은 자들이 먼저 불의 신 바알의 이름을 부르며 불로 응답하라고 종일 부르고 외치나 아무런 응답이 없다. 불러도 대답 없는 이름이다. 엘리야가 제단에 물을 많이 붓게 하고 여호와의 이름을 부르자 불이 내려 제단을 전부 불살랐다. 

엘리야가 믿는 하나님은 여호와시다. 하나님이 모세를 만나 자기 백성 구출의 사명을 주시자 모세는 그의 이름을 물었다. 그는 스스로 있는 자라 하신다  내가 여기 있어! 하는 말이다. 어제도 오늘도 영원히 내가 여기 있어 하신다. 예수께서 아브라함 이전에 내가 있다고 하신 이름이다.

야곱은 쌍둥이 형의 장자 명분을 거래하여 빼앗고 아버지의 축복을 받고는 생명의 위협을 받자 멀리 외삼촌 집으로 도망한다. 도중에 해가 지고 돌을 베고 잠자다가 사닥다리가 하늘에 닿은 꿈을 꾼다. 꼭대기에 하나님이 서서 자기를 여호와로 알리며 내가 너와 함께 있어 네가 어디로 가든지 너를 지키고 축복하리라 하신다. 홀로 도망하는 야곱에게 조상의 하나님이 거기서 내가 여기 있어! 하신다. 야곱은 그곳을 하나님의 전 벧엘이라 이름하였다. 그는 여호와 하나님을 인격체로 처음 만나고 그 후 어떤 형편에서나 내가 여기 있어!  하시는 여호와의 인도로 나아가고  나중 이름을 이스라엘로 개명하여  오늘  나라이름이 되어 있다. 

내가 여기 있어! 하나님은 인격체라로 응답하고 만나 주신다. 과거의 경험이 중요하고 미래도 크지만 우리는 오늘을 살고 있기에 내가 여기 있어 하시는 하나님을 경험하고 관계를 맺는다. 그는 나와 함께 하여 나를 지키시고 나의 필요를 채워 주시지만 나를 통하여 자기 이름을 나타내고 참 하나님으로 인정과 예배 받기를 기뻐하신다. 이 때 그는  더욱 친밀하게 내가 여기 있어 하며 일 하신다.

지난 월요일 1월20일은 마틴루터킹 국경일이면서 도날드 트럼프의 47대 대통령 취임일이라 나는 모세가 내가 여기 있나이다 하며 하나님의 부르심에 응하는 것을 생각하였다. 모세는 애굽사람에게 고난 당하는 동족을 구하고자 살인하고 도망하여 남의 양을 돌보았지만 그의 소원은 노예로 고생하는 자기 백성이 해방되는 것이었다. 어느 날 산에서 양을 치는데 떨기나무에 불이 붙었으나 타서 없어지지 않는다. 보려고 가까이 갔더니 불속에서 모세야 모세야 부르기에 내가 여기 있나이다 대답한다. 그는 그 조상의 하나님이라며 자기 백성이 애굽에서 고난 당하는 것을 보고 부르짖는 신음소리를 듣고 그들을 해방시켜 그들  조상에게 약속한 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅으로 인도하려 한다고 한다. 모세에게 얼마나 반갑고 기다리던 소식이겠나! 그 일을  같이 하자고 한다.  모세는 힘들고 어려운 그 일을 받아 당시 최강국 이집트에서 그 백성을 해방시켰다. 

마틴루터킹은 모세의 심정으로 자기 동족을 바라본다. 100년 전 아브라함 링컨 대통령이 흑인노예를 해방시켰으나 그들은 여전히 삶의 모든 면에서 차별과 불의를 받으며 가난과 고난을 겪고 있다. 이는 사람은 누구나 평등하게 창조되었다고 말하는 헌법과 사회정의에 어긋나는 일이다.킹은 비폭력 저항운동으로 민권을 외쳤다.  1963년 8월28일 직장과 자유를 위한 워싱턴 대행진으로 링컨 기념관 앞에 모인 수십만 군중 앞에서 그는 내게는 꿈이 있다고 연설한다. 그것은 언젠가 이전 노예의 자손과 노예 주인의 자손이 형제사랑을 나누며 함께 식탁에 앉을 날이 오는 것이다. 그의 자녀가 피부색이 아니라 인격에 따라 평가 받을 날이 올 것이다. 민권운동의 결과로 이듬해 민권법이 제정되었다.

1968년 킹은 흑인 청소노동자 파업 지지를 위해 멤피스를 방문중  4월3일 메이슨 템플에서 나는 산꼭대기에 올랐다는 연설을 하며 느보산에 올라간 모세의 심정으로 나는 약속의 땅을 보았다 나는 여러분과 함께 그곳에 도착하지 못할 수도 있다. 하지만 걱정하지 않는다 나는 행복하다고 하였다. 그는 다음 날 그가 묵던 모텔에서 저격을 당하였다.그는 내가 여기 있습니다 하는 마음으로 자기 삶을 평등과 사회정의에 온전히 바쳤다. 

킹 기념일에 트럼프는 미국을 다시 위대하게 라는 기치를 들고 대통령으로 취임하였다. 일기때와는 달리 지난 8년의 경험과 수련, 총을 맞고 새로이 받은 생명과 사명에 근거한 확신을 보이며 이제 미국 쇠퇴의 시기는 끝나고 황금시기가 시작한다고 선포하며 그의 꿈을 밝힌다. 국제관계 보다 국내문제를 비상사태로 보고 나라의 안보와 번영으로 강국을 만들어 평화를 지킬 것이다. 열린 국경을 넘는  불법이민과 범죄자를 방지하고 경제안정을 위하여 무역관세를 정상화하여 세입으로 삼고 국민의 세금부담을 줄이며 무진장한 석유와 천연가스를 시추 생산 공급하고 물가를 안정시키고 제조업 육성과 노동자의 후생을 확실하게 할 것이다. 사람에게는 남녀 두 성별만 있다고 하다. 그는 취임당일에 많은 행정 명령과 시행서에 서명하였다. 다음날 아침 뉴욕 타임즈는 내가 여기 있나이다라는 제목으로 그의 취임을 다루었다. 그에게서 모세와 킹의 사명과 결단을 보며 황금기를 기대하는 것일까? 나도 그 꿈이 이루어지도록 기도한다.

누구나 하나님으로부터 생명과 함께 사명을 그가 사는 시대를 위하여 받는다. 어떻게 하면 내가 여기 있나이다 하며 자기 사명을 알고 성취할 수 있을까!

Here I Am

Last Monday, January 20, was Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the inauguration dayof Donald Trump as the 47th president. It made me reflect on Moses’ response, “Here I am,” to God’s calling. Moses, who had fled after killing an Egyptian to protect his people, was tending someone else’s sheep. Yet his heartfelt desire was for his people, suffering as slaves, to be freed.

One day, while shepherding on a mountain, he saw a bush that burned but was not consumed. As he approached, a voice from the fire called, “Moses, Moses!” and he answered, “Here I am.” The voice identified himself as the God of his ancestors, saying that He had seen the suffering of His people in Egypt, heard their cries, and intended to liberate them and lead them to the promised land of milk and honey. For Moses, this must have been welcome and long-awaited news! God invited him to join in this mission. Despite the challenges, Moses took on this daunting task and, with God’s help, led his people out of slavery in the powerful nation of Egypt.

Martin Luther King Jr. looked at his people with the heart of Moses. Although Abraham Lincoln had abolished slavery 100 years earlier, African Americans were still suffering from discrimination, injustice, poverty, and hardship in every aspect of life. Such inequality was contrary to both the Constitution, which declares that all people are created equal, and the principles of social justice. King advocated for civil rights through nonviolent resistance. On August 28, 1963, during the Washington March  for Jobs and Freedom, he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech before hundreds of thousands gathered at the Lincoln Memorial.

His dream was that one day the descendants of former slaves and descendants of slave owners would sit together at the table of brotherly love. He envisioned a day when his children would be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. The Civil Rights Movement led to the passing of the Civil Rights Act the following year.

In 1968, while supporting a strike by black sanitation workers in Memphis, King delivered his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech at Mason Temple on April 3. With the heart of Moses gazing from Mount Nebo, he declared, “I have seen the promised land. I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land.” He concluded by saying he was not afraid and that he was happy. The next day, he was assassinated at the motel where he was staying. King, with a heart that said, “Here I am,” devoted his life entirely to equality and social justice.

On King’s holiday, Trump was inaugurated as president, rallying under the slogan “Make America Great Again.” Unlike his first term, he entered the presidency with the confidence born of experience and learning over the past eight years, along with a sense of life and mission given again from gunshot.  He proclaimed the end of America’s decline and the beginning of a golden age.

He prioritized domestic issues over international relations, vowing to strengthen the nation’s security and prosperity to maintain peace. He promised to secure the borders against illegal immigrants and criminals, normalize trade tariffs to stabilize the economy and reduce the tax burden on citizens, and boost the extraction and production of oil and natural gas to stabilize prices. He also aimed to promote manufacturing and improve workers’ welfare. He stated that humanity has only two genders, male and female. On his inauguration day, he signed numerous executive orders. The next morning, The New York Times covered his inauguration with the headline, “Here I Am.” Was the newspaper drawing parallels between Trump’s sense of mission and determination with those of Moses and King, fostering hope for a golden age? I, too, pray that this dream will come true.

Everyone receives life and a mission from God for the times in which they live. How can we discover and fulfill our mission with the heart that says, “Here I am”?

넉 달 전 아내의 한쪽 눈에 심한 통증이 나고 붉어지며 눈물이 솟구쳐 나왔다. 안과에 갔으나 약속이 되지 않았다고 받아주지 않아 알전트케어에 갔으나 길이 없다고 하여 응급실에 갔다. 안압을 측정하고 여러 조처를 하였으나 별로 도움이 되지 않은 가운데 다음 날 안과에 갔다. 눈이 건조하여 각막이 갈라져 있다고 한다. 날씨가 건조한 것도 있지만 사용하는 글라우코마 안약이 눈을 마르게 하여 일어난 것이다.약이 한면으로는 도움이 되나 다른 면으로는 다른 문제를 일으켰다. 글라우코마는 무릎 통증을 완화하고자 사용한 스테로이드가 안압을 올려 생긴 것이다. 각막은 12겹이라 찢어진 것이 치유되고 회복되는 데는 최소 8주가 걸린다고 하며 인조눈물을 넣고 항생제 연고를 시간 맞추어 넣으라는 처방이다. 통증이 갈아 앉고 색깔도 희어지고 좋아지는 것 같다가 잠간 사이에 다시 통증이 온다. 갑작스런 움직임, 더운 물 샤워, 찬 바람 모두가 눈의 통증을 유발하고 모르는 사이에 회복중의 각막이 다시 손상을 입는 것이다. 외부 출입이나 샤워 같은 일상을 제한하고 많은 주의를 한다. 몸의 모든 기관이 중요하지만 눈은 외부에 노출되면서도 아주 부드럽고 예민하여 이전과 달리 이미 각막에 상처가 있어 눈을 뜨고 감을 때도 아프기에 아주 세심하게 조심하고 돌보아야 한다.

하나님은 이스라엘을 자기 눈동자처럼 돌보고 지킨다고 한다.모세는 이집트에서 종으로 신음하는 자기 백성을 해방시키고 광야에서 40년간 인도하여 약속의 땅이 보이는 곳에 도착하여 지난 날을 회상하며 하나님과 그들의 관계를 말한다. 여호와께서 그들을 황무지에서, 짐승이 부르짖는 광야에서 만나시고 호위하시며 보호하시며 자기의 눈동자 같이 지키셨다 한다(신32:10)  희망이 없어 보이는 광야에서 그들을 자기 기업의 백성 곧 여호와를 알리고 자기 이름을 이어갈 나라로 정하였기에 그들을 호위하고 인도하며 보호하였다. 어떤 악한 세력도 그들을 해하지 못하도록 그들을 눈동자처럼 지켰다고 한다. 정착한 이스라엘은 주변 강한 민족에 둘러 싸여 언제나 위협과 전쟁을 경험하였지만 하나님이 그들을 눈종자처럼 지켜주셨다. 중요한 것은 그들이 하나님의 백성으로서 그를 인정하고 예배할 때에 보호를 받았다. 스가랴 선지자를 통하여 하나님은 그들을 범하는 자는 내 눈동자를 범하는 것이라 하신다. 이스라엘을 괴롭히는 자는 하나님의 눈동자를 범하기에 하나님이 그들을 대처하신다는 말이다. 역사의 사실이다. 이스라엘을 침략하고 멸망시킨 앗수르, 바벨론등은 역사에서 사자지고 헬라와 로마는 약화하여 이름만 남을 정도이지만 2천년간 사라졌던 이스라엘은 국가로 살아나고 세계에 영향을 미치고 있다.

하나님은 이스라엘만 아니라 오늘 그의 아들 예수 그리스도를 영접하고 믿는 자를 자기 눈동자처럼 사랑하고 지킨다. 하나님은 내아내를 일찍 만나고 선택하여 하나님의 기업으로 삼으시고 일제와 공상치하, 625전쟁과 피난 가난과 역경 죽을 병 중에서도 호위하고 보호하여 지금에 이르게 하신 것을 돌아보며 주를 찬양하고 감사한다. 아브라함에게 약속하신 대로 너를 위하는 자를 내가 위하고 너를 해하는 자를 내가 해한다는 것은 주의 눈동자가 된 사람이 경험하는 사실이다. 주의 택함 받은  사람은 오늘도 주의 눈동자처럼 보호와 사랑을 받고 있음을 확인하고 경외하는 마음으로 여호와를 하나님, 예수를 구주로 기쁘게 고백하며 증거할 것이다. 

The Pupil of God

Four months ago, my wife began experiencing severe pain in one eye, accompanied by redness and constant tearing. We visited an ophthalmologist, but they refused to see her without an appointment. We then tried urgent care, only to be told there was nothing they could do. Finally, we ended up in the emergency room. Despite measuring her intraocular pressure and taking various measures, there was little improvement. The next day, we went to an ophthalmologist who diagnosed her with a corneal abrasuon caused by dryness in her eye. While the dry weather was partly to blame, the glaucoma eye drops she had been using also contributed to the dryness. Though the medication was beneficial in some ways, it caused other issues.

Her glaucoma was originally caused by increased intraocular pressure due to steroids she had taken to alleviate knee pain. The cornea, composed of 12 layers, takes at least 8 weeks to heal and recover after tearing. The prescribed treatment included artificial tears and antibiotic ointment, to be administered on a strict schedule. While the pain subsided and her eye’s appearance improved, the pain would often recur suddenly. Sudden movements, hot showers, or exposure to cold wind could all trigger the pain, re-damaging the healing cornea. To prevent further hurt, she limited her outdoor activities, showers, and other daily routines, practicing extreme caution.

Although all organs in the body are important, the eyes, being both exposed and highly sensitive, require exceptional care, especially when injured. Even simple actions like opening and closing her eyes caused pain, making meticulous attention and care essential.

The Bible says that God protects and cares for Israel as He would His own pupil. Moses, after leading the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, guided them through the wilderness for 40 years. As they reached the edge of the Promised Land, he reflected on their journey and their relationship with God. In Deuteronomy 32:10, Moses recounts that God met them in the barren wilderness, cared for them, and protected them as the apple of His eye. God chose them as His own inheritance, for them  to know Him and carry on His name, and therefore guarded and led them through the desolate desert.

Even after settling in the Promised Land, Israel was surrounded by powerful nations, constantly facing threats and wars. Yet, God protected them like His own pupil when they acknowledged Him as their God and worshiped Him. Through the prophet Zechariah, God declared, “Whoever touches you touches the apple of my eye.” Those who harmed Israel were, in effect, harming God Himself, and He responded to them. History bears this out: Assyria and Babylon, which invaded and destroyed Israel, eventually vanished from the world stage, while Greece and Rome were reduced to shadows of their former glory. In contrast, Israel, which disappeared as a nation for 2,000 years, was restored and continues to influence the world today.

God’s care extends not only to Israel but also to those who accept His Son, Jesus Christ, and believe in Him. Reflecting on my wife’s life, I see how God chose her early on, made her part of His inheritance, and protected her through the trials of Japanese occupation, communist rule, the Korean War, displacement, poverty, adversity, and life-threatening illnesses. His constant guidance and care bring us to this day, and I praise and thank Him for it.

As God promised Abraham, “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse.” This is a truth experienced by those who are the apple of God’s eye. Today, we reaffirm that those chosen by God are loved and protected as the apple of His eye. With reverence, we joyfully profess and testify that the Lord is our God and Jesus is our Savior.

어느 목사가 전도사 사역부터 40념이 되어 목회은퇴를 하고 부부가 그간 전적으로 헌신하였으니 이제는 자유롭게 여행하고 즐기는 시간을 가지자 하고 한달 여행을 하며 친구 집에 머무는데 옆구리가 아파 잠을 잘 수가 없었다. 의사에게 연락하니 속히 오라 하여 다음 날 하루 12시간을 운전하여 의사를 보았더니 대상포진 싱글이라는 병으로 약이 없기에 아플만큼 아파야 한다고 한다 한달 동안 죽어라고  아파 잠을 잘 수도 없고 음식을 먹을 수도 없을 정도였다. 그는 하나님께 물었다. 어떻게 된 일입니까? 뭐라고! 자유롭게 마음대로 놀러 다니겠다고? 40년 하였으면 되지 않았습니까? 네가 나와 이야기한 것을 생각하나? 물으시며 그로부터 44년 전 죽음의 골짜기를 헤매고 있을 때 내가 죽지 않고 살아서 여호와의 하신 일을 선포하리라 (시118:17) 를 기억하게 하신다. 살아 있는 동안은 주의 일을 전하겠다는 것이다. 알았습니다. 잘못하였습니다 고백을 하였다. 그는 40년이면 족할 것이라 생각하였으나 주께서는 생명 있는 동안은 하나님의 행사를 전하라는 것이라 주의 일에는 방학이 없다는 의미로 알다.  

하나님의 사람 모세는 이집트에서 태어난  히브리인으로 왕명에 따라 강에 버림을 받았으나 왕의 공주가 발견 구출하여 아들로 삼고 40년간 교육하였다.그는 노예로 신음하는 동족 히브리인을 괴롭히는 이집트인을 죽인 것이 탄로되어 도망하여 낯선 곳에 가서 목자로 일을 하던 40년에 가시덤불 불꽃 속에서 들리는 음성을 듣고 부름 받아 자기 백성을 구출하였다. 광야를 지나며 40년간 고생을 하다가 이제 강을 건너면 약속의 땅에 들어가는데 하나님은 모세의 삶과 일을 끝내게 하신다. 모세로서는 너무나 억울한 생각으로 나로 강을 건너 아름다운 땅을 보게 하소서 간청하였다. 그간 그의 기도를 모두 들으시던 하나님이 이번에는 그만해도 족하다. 다시는 그 일로 구하지 말라 하신다 (신3:26) 모세는 지난 40년간 하나님의 손에 붙들리어 정말 큰 일을 하였다. 강대국 이집트에서 노예민족을 탈출시켜 광야 40년을 헤매다가 약속의 땅 입구에 이른 것은 사람으로는 할 수 없는 일을 하였다. 그만하면 족하다. 하나님은 그의 일은 충분히 끝났다 하신다.  주를 믿는 자로서 주께서 맡기신 일을 주께서 만족할 정도로 하고 있나!

예수 믿는 자를 박해하며 잡아 감옥에 넣던 청년은 살기가 등등하여 먼 나라에서 믿는 자를 잡아 호송하려고 가다가 주를 만났다. 그는 박해자에서 예수를 전하는 사람으로 변화하여 많은 고난을 당하며 여러 나라에서 선교하여 재자들을 양육하고 교회를 세웠다. 그에게는 그를 괴롭히는 육체의 가시 곧 사탄의 사자가 있었기에 이를 제거하여 달라고 간절하게 기도하였더니 주의 말씀이 들린다. 내 은혜가 네게 족하다 하신다. 그의 몸에 가시가 찌르듯 고통이 있지만 주의 크신 은혜를 기억하며 감사한다. 바울은 고통을 안고 겸손을 배우며 주를 의지함으로 그가 약하면서 하나님의 강하심을 경험하였다. 고난 속에서 주의 십자가 고난을 기억하고 자기가 당하는 어려움을 잘 감당하며 주의 고난에 동참하는 기쁨을 가지기에 세상은 이런 사람을 감당하지 못하고 오히려 복음을 받아들인다. 주께서 불러 일을 맡기시면 어떤 형편에서도 지키시고 일을 수행하는 힘을 주시는 것이 큰 은혜다

스스로의 삶이나 일에 대하여 만족하는가? 금년에는 주로부터 충분하다는 인정 받기를 소원한다.

치료하는 광선 Healing Rays of the Sun

손자가 다섯 살 때 갑자기 배 아래 방광부분이 부어올라 미국에서 제일 유명하다는 필라델피아 아동병원에서 멀지 않게 살고 있었기에 가서 진단하니 안에 큰 혹이 생겼는데 무엇인지 알지 못하여 조직검사를 하고 암인 것을 발견하였다.너무 급성이라 시간이 다르게 자라고 있으나 어디에서 시작되었는지도 찾지 못하고 일단 방사선 치료를 시작하였다. 일년 가까운 44주를 치료하는 동안 머리와 함께 체력이 모두 빠지고 아이가 탈진상태에 들어갔다. 가족 남자는 모두 그와 같음을 보이고 격려하고자 머리를 밀었다. 혹은 점점 줄어들어 방사선 치료가 끝날 즈음은 일 인치 정도의 크기가 되어 수술을 하고 그 후 13년간 건강하게 지나며 지금은 대학원서를 보내고 있 어 감사하다. 방사선의 강한 빛이 암을 깨뜨리고 몸에 건강을 허락하였다.

구약성경 마지막 말라기는 마지막 때에 관하여 의로운 해가 떠 올라서 치료하는 광선을 발하리니 너희가 나가서 외양간에서 나온 송아지같이 뛰리라 한다. 아침마다 오르는 태양이 의로운 해라 한다. 미국을 비치는 해는 한국에도 아프리카에도 비친다. 주를 섬기며 바르게 사는 성도들에게도 비치고 주를 모르고 자기 중심으로 살며 악을 도모하는 자에게도 비친다. 농사하는 자에게도 학문하며 연구하는 자에게도 비친다. 해가 올라오지 않는다면 어떨까? 알라스카는 여름이면 백야라 불리듯이 어둔 밤이 거의 없다. 방문 중 7월4일 독립기념일 폭죽놀이른 구경하는데 밤 11시반에 시작하나 어둡지 않아 폭죽 터지는 소리가 나고 연기는 보이나 불꽃은 보이지 않았다. 그들은 5시에 퇴근하여 저녁을 먹고 낚시를 나간다.  밤을 낮으로 살고 있었다. 그러나 겨울이 오면 해를 보기 어려울 정도라 그들은 침울하고 많은 사람은 술을 의지하다가 중독이 되기도 한다.

의로운 해는 치료하는 광선을 발한다.햇빛을 잘 받으면 멜라토닌 호르몬이 생성되어 잠을 잘 자게 되고 많은 병 가운데 유방암을 위시하여 여러 암, 당뇨, 신부전증,  건선, 아토피, 알자이머, 파킨슨, 골다공증, 임신중독, 자가면역증 등이 예방 또는 치료된다고 한다.  아내는 골다공증으로 손목 발목을 세번이나 골절하는 사고를 겪었지만 적도 가까운 에티오피아에서 2년반을 살며 햇빛 아래서 사역하다가 돌아와 조사를 하니 골밀도가 아주 좋아져 약을 더 이상 먹을 필요가 없었다. 병에서 고침을 받으면 얼마나 기쁜가? 송아지가 외양간에서 나와 뛰는 것에 비교할 수 있을까! 

치유하는 광선은 아무나 아니라 하나님을 경외하는 자에게 나타난다고 한다. 의로운 태양이기에 하나님을 외면하고 악을 행하는 자에게는 용광로의 불이 되어 그들을 지푸라기처럼 살라버린다고 한다. 해가 비치어 땅을 사막으로 만들고 생명이 살 수 없게  하고 사람이 잘못 받으면 피부만 아니라 죽을 병을 일으키기도 한다. 

의로운 해는 하나님으로서 사람이 되어 세상의 빛으로 오신 예수 그리스도이시다. 그는 믿는 자에게 치료와 생명이시지만 믿지 않는 자에게는 심판과 죽음이다. 나는 젊은 시절  약이 없는 죽을 병에 시달리다가 하나님의 말씀과 주 예수의 은혜의 치료하는 광선으로 고침 받아 지금까지 살고 있는 것이 감사요 증거다. 

새해를 맞아 밝게 올라오는 아침해와 함께 새로운 결단을 하면서 의로운 해의 치료하는 광선을 받아 치유와 기쁨, 평안과 감사의 풍성한 생명을 모두가 누리기를 바란다. 

 

Healing Rays of the Sun

When my grandson was five years old, his lower abdomen around the bladder area suddenly became swollen. Living not far from the renowned Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, we sought a diagnosis there. The doctors found a large tumor inside but couldn’t identify what it was until a biopsy revealed it was cancer. It was so aggressive that it grew rapidly, and they couldn’t determine where it originated. They immediately began radiation therapy.

Over the course of nearly a year—44 weeks of treatment—my grandson’s hair fell out, and his physical strength was depleted, leaving him utterly exhausted. To show support and encouragement, all the men in the family shaved their heads. Gradually, the tumor shrank, and by the end of radiation therapy, it had reduced to about an inch in size, enabling surgery. He recovered and has lived healthily for 13 years since, and now, he is applying to graduate schools, for which we are deeply grateful. The powerful rays of radiation destroyed the cancer and allowed health to return to his body.

The last book of the Old Testament, Malachi, speaks of the end times, proclaiming that the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing rays, and you shall go out leaping like calves released from the stall. The rising sun each morning is likened to this Sun of Righteousness. The same sun that shines on America also shines on Korea and Africa. It shines on those who serve the Lord and live righteously, as well as on those who do not know Him, live self-centered lives, and plan evil. It shines on farmers and on scholars who engage in research.

But what if the sun didn’t rise? In Alaska, summers are called the “midnight sun” because there is almost no night. While visiting there, I watched the Fourth of July fireworks, which began at 11:30 p.m., but because it wasn’t dark, only the sound and smoke of the fireworks were visible, not the sparks. People there finish work at 5 p.m., have dinner, and then go fishing—living their nights as if they were day. However, in winter, the absence of sunlight causes many to feel gloomy, and some turn to alcohol, leading to addiction.

The Sun of Righteousness radiates healing rays. Sunlight promotes the production of melatonin, helping us sleep better, and is known to prevent or treat various illnesses such as breast cancer, other cancers, diabetes, kidney disease, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, osteoporosis, preeclampsia, and autoimmune disorders. My wife, who suffered from osteoporosis and had fractured her wrist and ankle three times, lived for two and a half years in Ethiopia, near the equator, serving under the sunlight. Upon returning and undergoing medical examination, her bone density had improved so significantly that she no longer needed medication. How great is the joy of being healed from disease! Could it be compared to calves leaping out of a barn?

However, the healing rays are not for everyone but for those who fear the Lord. The Sun of Righteousness will be a consuming fire for those who ignore God and do evil, burning them like straw in a furnace. While the sun gives life to the earth, it can also turn it into a desert, uninhabitable for life. Misusing sunlight can cause deadly diseases, not just skin problems.

The Sun of Righteousness is God Himself, who became man and came as the light of the world—Jesus Christ. For those who believe, He brings healing and life, but for those who do not, He brings judgment and death. In my youth, I suffered from a fatal illness with no cure, but through God’s Word and the healing rays of grace from Jesus, I was healed and have lived until today, for which I am grateful.

As we welcome the new year, let us make new resolutions with the bright morning sun, receiving the healing rays of the Sun of Righteousness. May everyone experience healing, joy, peace, and the abundant life that comes with gratitude. Healing Rays of the Sun
