죽음 나무 The Tree of Death 한국 전쟁이 일어나고 북에서 예수 믿는 가족이 몰살 계획을 알고는 모든 것을 버리고 남쪽으로 도망하여 나왔다. 과수원을 하던 아버지가 남의 집 과수원에서 일을 하는 동안 그의 딸이 함께 가서 밭에 늘린 나물을 보고 뜯어 가서 죽을 끓여 먹고는 온 가족이 얼굴과 몸이 퉁퉁 부어 죽음 같은 아픔을 경험하였다. 그 나물은 독초였다. 사람이 처음 살던 동산에 생명 나무와 죽음 나무가 나란히 있었다. 하나는 먹으면 사는 것이고 다른 하나는 먹으면 반드시 죽는다. 죽음 나무는 선악을 알게 하는 나무라 그 열매를 먹으면 선악을 알게 되나 죽음이다. 살기 위하여는 생명나무의 열매를 먹고 죽음 나무의 열매는 먹지 않아야 한다. 그런데 죽음 나무는 매력적이라 보기에 좋고 먹고 싶은 충동이 일어나고 그것을 먹으면 지혜와 만족이 올 것 같고 하나님처럼 될 것 같아 그것을 먹었다. 기대와는 다른 일이 일어나다. 선악을 알게 되니 자기의 벗은 것이 부끄럽고 하나님이 두려워 숨어야 했다. 하나님을 피하고 떠나 그와 분리되는 것이 곧 죽음이다. 선악을 구분하고 판단하는 것은 사람에게 기본이라 생각하는데 그것이 죽음이라니 무슨 말인가? 옳고 그른 것을 판단하는 것은 내가 주인 곧 하나님이 되어 선악을 구분하고 편을 갈라 대적하고 싸움으로 죽이는 자리에 이른다. 한 소년이 법대에 가서 판사가 되려는 꿈을 가졌는데 하나님의 말씀을 들었다. ‘판단하는 일은 내게 맡기고 너는 나의 사랑을 전하면 어떻겠어!’제안 하신다. 선악의 판단은 정죄하고 죽이는 것이라 그것은 전적으로 하나님께 속한 것이니 그에게 맡기고 오로지 그의 사랑을 나누어 사람을 살리고 생명을 풍성하게 하라는 것이다. 사람이 선악을 판단하면 하나님 자리를 빼앗고 스스로 하나님이 되고 대적하는 원수가 되기에 이는 바로 죽음이다. 생명나무와 죽음나무는 나란히 서 있다. 사람을 존중하고 선택의 자유를 주심이다. 생명이냐 죽음이나 선택하는 것은 전적으로 사람의 자유다. 그 결과는 스스로 담당하는 것이 질서다. 죽음나무 열매를 먹고 죽은 자는 영원히 죽음으로 끝이 나나? 하나님은 생명과 사랑이시라 생명나무로 찾아와 연결을 찾으신다. 죽음나무에 자기 생명의 접을 붙인다. 어린 시절 나는 아버지께서 접붙이는 것을 보았다. 돌감나무의 껍질에 칼집을 내고 단감나무의 순이나 가지를 접붙인다. 뿌리는 돌감나무라도 단감이 열린다. 하나님께서 아들 예수를 보내어 하신 일이다. 그가 십자가에서 자기 몸을 찢어 죽음나무에 자기를 접붙이는 것이다. 중요한 것은 접붙일 자리를 내어 순을 받아들이는 것이 생명을 얻는 길이다. 나는 죄로 죽은 나무이지만 예수님을 믿고 영접함으로 나는 사망에서 생명으로 옮겨가는 특권을 가진다. 생명나무와 죽음나무가 나란히 있는 것은 죽음에서 생명으로 옮기기 위함이다. 생명 얻은 사람이라면 옆에 있는 죽음 사람에게 생명을 나누어 그도 생명을 얻게 하는 것이 사명이 아니겠나~! www.onesoulministry.org The Tree of Death When the Korean War broke out, a Christian family in the North learned that the authorities were planning to annihilate all believers. Leaving everything behind, they fled to the South. The father, who had once owned an orchard, began working in another man’s orchard. One day, his daughter went with him and gathered wild greens from the field, cooked them into porridge, and the whole family ate together. Soon their faces and bodies swelled painfully as though death itself had come upon them. The plants had been poisonous. In the first garden where humankind lived, there stood side by side the Tree of Life and the Tree of Death. One gave life to those who ate from it, while the other brought certain death. The Tree of Death was the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil—its fruit opened one’s eyes to moral knowledge, but the result was death. To live, one must eat of the Tree of Life and avoid the fruit of death. Yet the Tree of Death was beautiful, pleasing to the eye, and stirred desire. It looked as though eating it would bring wisdom, satisfaction, even godlike understanding—so they ate it. But something unexpected followed: they realized they were naked, felt shame, and hid in fear of God. Hiding from God, separating from Him—that is death. People think discerning good and evil is fundamental to being human. But how can that lead to death? Because when a person judges right and wrong on their own, they make themselves the master, the god of judgment. They divide, take sides, oppose, and eventually destroy. A young man once dreamed of studying law to become a judge. Then he heard the voice of God: "Leave judgment to Me. Would you not rather share My love?" God’s proposal was clear: judging between good and evil brings condemnation and death—it belongs only to Him. Our calling is to share His love, to give life, and to make life abundant. When a person claims the right to judge, he dethrones God and becomes His rival; that is death itself. The Trees of Life and Death still stand side by side. God honors human dignity by granting the freedom to choose. Whether one chooses life or death—that freedom is entirely ours, but so are the consequences. Is death the end for those who ate the fruit of death? No. God, who is life and love, comes searching for reconnection through the Tree of Life. He grafts His own life into the Tree of Death. As a child, I watched my father graft persimmon branches: he would cut into the bark of a wild persimmon tree and insert a tender shoot from a sweet one. Though the rootstock remained wild, sweet fruit would grow. That is what God did through His Son Jesus. On the cross, Jesus’ body was torn open—He grafted Himself into the Tree of Death. The crucial step is to open a space in our hearts to receive that graft; that is the path to life. Though I am a tree dead in sin, by believing and receiving Jesus I am granted the privilege of crossing from death into life. The Tree of Life and the Tree of Death stand side by side so that through choice and grace, we may move from death to life. And those who have received life—shouldn’t their mission be to share that life with those still in death, so that they too may live? test
