고난이 있는?  Are you in Affliction?

사는 것이 고난이라 역사는 고난으로 가득하다.  심한 고난을 겪는 욥은 사람은 고난을 위하여 났다고 한탄할 정도였고 개인만 아니라 인류 역사는 가난 질병 갈등과 투쟁 전쟁으로 연속된다. 고난은 삶의 큰 도전이라 이를  피하고 이기기하여 힘을 기르고 많은 기술과 의약을 개발하여 사람이 살기에 편리하게 하지만 여전히 고난은 누구에게나 있다. 고난 속에서 삶의 기쁨과 의미를 잃어버리고 자포자기 하거나 남을 해하고 자기를 해하며 심지어 생명까지 끝내는 자들이 노인이나 젊은이나 누구에게나 참으로 많다는 것이 놀라운 현실이다. 그렇다면 이 고난을 어떻게 할까?

고난 당하는 자가 있는가? 그는 기도하라고 한다. 이는 내가 스스로 해결할 수 없는 일이기에 전능하신 사랑의 하나님께 나아가 그의 도움을 받으라는 것이다. 사실 고난이 없으면 모든 것을 스스로 잘 한다고 생각하겠지만 감당할 수 없는 고난을 당하면서 자기 약함을 인정하고 도움을 구하다가 결국 하나님을 찾게 된다. 하나님은 사람이 고난 속에 도움을 청하며 자기에게 나아 오기를 기다리신다. 

이집트에서 노예로 고역을 당하며 이스라엘 백성이 부르짖었더니 하나님은 들으시고 모세를 보내어 그들을 해방시키고 탈출시켜 자유민이 되게 하고 나라를 세우게 하셨다. 독립국가가 되었으나 주변 나라의 잦은 침공으로 고난이 심하였다. 강대한 아수르는 대군으로 이스라엘 수도 예루살렘을 향하여 진격하고 항복을 요구하며 어떤 나라의 신도 그 나라를 아수르왕의 손에서 건지지 못하였다고 위협한다.  대항할 힘이 없는 히스기야 왕은 하나님을 의지하고 바라보며 간절히 기도하였다. 그날 밤 침략군 18만5천명 전체는 시체가 되었다. 하나님은 원수를 제거하고 자기 백성을 지키셨다.  이런 일은 고난을 당하는  개인에게도 얼마든지 있다. 중요한 것은 고난 당할 때  하나님을 의지하고  기도하는 것이다. 

고난은 훈련을 위하여 하나님이 허락하시는 한 방편이다. 하나님께서 이스라엘에게 약속의 땅을 주셨다. 비어 있는 땅을 차지한 것이 아니라 그곳에 사는 안정되고 강한 민족들을 몰아내고 점령하게 하였으나 아직도 그 땅의 많은 가나안 족속이 남아 있었다. 이에 대하여 하나님은 전쟁을 알지 못하는 차세대 자손들에게 전쟁을 가르치고 알게 하기 위함이라 하셨다. 전쟁의 고난을 통하여 강한 민족으로 육성하신다. 강한 훈련은 강한 군인을 만들어 내는 법이다.  우리 민족은 역사적으로 매우 많은 전쟁과 고난의 훈련으로 강한 민족이 되고 이로서 6.25전쟁의 잿더미에서 일어나 세계 부강국가에 들어간 기적을 이루었다. 이민자인 우리도 받은 훈련으로 새로운 낯선 것에 굴하지 않고 일어설 수 있었다. 

다른 사람을 살리는 고난이 있다.  한국 전쟁이 났을 때 즉시 미국을 중심한  유엔의 파병 결의로 16개국 병사들이 생면부지의 땅에서 적군과 싸우다가 근 5만명의 꽃다운 목숨을 바친 피로 한국은 살아 피어나고 오늘에 이르게 된 것이 아닌가! 

고난 중의 가장 큰 것은 모든 사람이 죄의 심판과 죽음으로 지옥불에서 영원한 형벌을 받는 것이다.  여기서 해방과 탈출을 위하여 하나님의 아들 예수께서 오시고 인간의 모든 죄를 대신하여 피 흘려 죽으심으로 누구든지 그를 인정하고 믿으면 죄를 용서받고 영원한 천국의 복락을 누리게 하셨다. 주께서 오신 것을 기억하는 이 대림절에  예수님을 의지함으로 나의 모든 고난이 벗어짐을 체험하는 축복이 있기를 바란다. 

Are You in Affliction?

Life itself is affliction, and history is filled with suffering. Job, who endured severe trials, lamented that humans are born for trouble. Not only individuals but human history is marked by afflictions of poverty, disease, conflict, struggle, and war. Affliction is a major challenge in life. To avoid and overcome it, humanity has developed strength, skills, and medicines, making life more convenient. Yet, affliction persists for everyone. It’s shocking to see how many, whether young or old, lose their joy and sense of purpose in life, giving in to despair, harming others and selves, or even ending the lives. Then, how should we manage the affliction?

Is here anyone in affliction? Let him pray the Bible ways. This means turning to the all-powerful and loving God for help because the problem is beyond our ability to solve on our own. Without affliction, people might think they can handle everything themselves. But when faced with overwhelming suffering, they recognize their weakness and seek help, often leading them to God. God waits for people to come to Him for help in their affliction.

When the Israelites were enslaved and suffering in Egypt, they cried out to God. He heard them, sent Moses, and freed them, transforming them into a nation of free people. However, even as an independent nation, they endured severe afflictions from frequent invasions by surrounding countries. When the powerful Assyrian army advanced on Jerusalem and demanded surrender, mocking the power of any god to save a nation from the Assyrian king’s hand, King Hezekiah turned to God in desperate prayer. That very night, 185,000 Assyrian soldiers died. God protected His people and defeated their enemies. This kind of deliverance is not limited to nations; it can happen to individuals facing their own afflictions. The key is to trust and pray to God in times of trouble.

Affliction is also a tool God allows for training. When God gave Israel the Promised Land, it wasn’t uninhabited; they had to drive out the strong, settled nations living there. Some Canaanite tribes still remained, and God used this to teach the next generation about war. Through the hardships of war, He trained Israel into a strong nation. Intense training produces strong soldiers. Similarly, the Korean people have become a resilient nation through a history of wars and suffering, rising from the ashes of the Korean War to become one of the world’s afflluent nations. As immigrants, we, too, have been shaped by the training we received and can rise above new and unfamiliar challenges.

There is also suffering endured for the sake of saving others. During the Korean War, the immediate decision by the United Nations, led by the U.S., to send troops resulted in soldiers from 16 nations fighting on an unlnown land. Nearly 50,000 young lives were sacrificed to ensure Korea’s survival and its growth into the nation it is today.

The greatest affliction of all is tje judgment of all ment for sin, leading to death and eternal punishment in the fires of hell. To deliver us from this, Jesus, the Son of God, came to earth. By shedding His blood and dying for the sins of all humanity, He provided a way for anyone who acknowledges and believes in Him to be forgiven of sins and enjoy the eternal blessings of heaven. In this Advent season, as we remember the coming of Jesus, may we experience the blessing of being freed from our affliction by trusting in Him.
