A Deeply Rooted Tree
A Deeply Rooted Tree
A Deeply Rooted Tree
Suppose that, in the early days of the founding of the Republic of Korea, the president was making a tour of the provinces. A local leader, wanting to make a good impression on the president, thought that there should be trees lining the roads. So he cut down some trees and planted them along the roadside. For a few days, the trees appeared to be alive, but because they had no roots, they soon withered and were eventually used as firewood.
In contrast, the Yongbieocheonga, an early Korean literary work, says that a deeply rooted tree is not blown down by the wind, produces beautiful flowers, and bears abundant fruit. It uses the image of such a tree to describe what the life of a person with knowledge and character should be like.
The Apostle Paul speaks in Colossians 2 about a life that is deeply rooted and a life without roots. Human traditions, elementary teachings, worldly powers, and legal regulations are constantly changing. As the Korean saying goes, “Power lasts only ten years,” and even the mountains and rivers change with the passing of ten years. Such things are like shallow-rooted trees that eventually dry up.
On the other hand, those who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord are people who live their lives in Him. Because they are deeply rooted in Him, they are not shaken by the changing ways of the world. They stand firmly according to the teaching they have received and bear fruit, overflowing with thanksgiving.
Jesus came into the world as a human being, yet He is God, and all the fullness of God’s nature dwells in Him. He was put to death, but He rose again and demonstrated the abundance of life. When we believe in Him, receive Him, and are united with Him, we receive and enjoy His living and abundant life.
The human body has limitations and will eventually fall, but Jesus, who rose from the dead, possesses a life that cannot die, and He gives that life to those who believe in Him. Those who believe in the Lord are not marked merely by physical circumcision; rather, they are baptized in the name of Jesus, dying with Him and participating in His resurrection life. This enables them to live like deeply rooted trees that do not wither but produce beautiful flowers and abundant fruit.
Even those who believe in Jesus experience many winds and hardships. They face the changing ways of the world and its traditions, illness and poverty, failure and ridicule, hatred and persecution. Yet they are not shaken. They stand firmly and, believing that they are sharing in the sufferings of the Lord, they give thanks even in their trials. In this way, they reveal the overflowing abundance of life they have received from Him. Such people are those whom the world cannot overcome.
Their lives attract the attention of those who live according to the ways of the world and open a way for them to be led to the Lord. The spread of the gospel of eternal life through such lives has been a reality throughout Christian history and missionary work.
I want to ask myself: Am I a tree that is deeply rooted in the Lord, standing firmly and bearing abundant flowers and fruit because I believe in Him? I desire to renew my relationship with the Lord each day and remain deeply rooted in Him, so that my life may continue to display the abundance of His life.

말과 관계 형성 ords and Building Relationships
말과 관계 형성 ords and Building Relationships
Words and Building Relationships
When I get up in the morning, I first give thanks to God in prayer. Rather than speaking, I want to listen to what God has to say, so I wait before Him, read the Word for the day, listen for His voice, and meditate on what He is saying to me. He has guided me until now with wisdom and love, meeting me sometimes through His Word and sometimes through the circumstances of my life. Therefore, I listen to the Bible because I want to hear His voice.
On September 14, I finished the book of Malachi and began the Gospel of Matthew. Yesterday, on September 28, I finished Revelation and began Genesis. Because I have low vision, reading with my eyes is difficult, so listening is especially important to me. I prefer listening to God's Word not only while I am walking but also whenever I have time.
God is the One who speaks. He created the heavens and the earth by His Word, and everything was formed according to what He said. Not one of His words falls to the ground without being fulfilled. His Word has the power to accomplish what He declares. When we hear and receive His Word, it becomes reality. Whether God speaks directly or speaks through His prophets, His Word is fulfilled.
Elijah declared that there would be neither rain nor dew except at his word, and for three years and six months there was neither rain nor dew. Jesus attended a wedding feast, and when the wine ran out, His mother told Him about it. Jesus told the servants to fill the jars with water and then draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet. They did exactly as He said, and the water had become excellent wine.
Ecclesiastes 5 teaches that listening to God's Word is better than offering sacrifices. When there are too many words, there are many mistakes, and foolish words are easily spoken. Samuel also said that obedience is better than sacrifice and that listening is better than the fat of rams. The message is clear: listening is better than speaking.
Whenever we speak, there is someone to whom we are speaking. Although we may not see that person, there is always someone listening. God in heaven hears everything we say here on earth. When we look back at our past words, there are many things of which we are proud, but also many things we regret. As for the future, we have dreams and plans, but we cannot control what tomorrow will bring.
Communication technology has developed so much that the whole world is now connected. If someone wants to hear what is being said, there are devices that can record even conversations spoken in a private room. There is increasingly little that can be hidden. If this is true even in this world, how much more is there nothing that can be hidden from God in heaven? If we cannot speak carelessly in the presence of an earthly king, how much more carefully should we examine our words and actions before God, the King of kings?
Just as God fulfills what He says, He expects people to act upon what they say. When we make a vow or a promise, we must keep it if we are to be faithful people. It is said that if we are not going to keep our word, it is better not to make a promise at all. When someone makes a promise, it may sound very good at the time, but if the promise is not kept, how can anyone trust that person?
I once told my youngest daughter that if she studied hard and came in first in her class, I would buy her a bicycle. She worked hard and did well in school, and she waited for her father to keep his promise. But I did not buy her the bicycle. When she reminded me of what I had said, I realized that I had completely forgotten that I had made the promise. I was truly ashamed.
God, however, never forgets His promises. He said to me when I was young, “Wherever you go, I will be with you.” Even now, He faithfully remains with me. He is trustworthy, and for this I praise Him and boast in the Lord.
Whenever we meet, we speak with one another, and through our words we continue to build and maintain our relationships. I want to live each day as a child of God, trusting and loving one another, and experiencing joy and gratitude. At the same time, I want to continue growing in an ever-deeper and more intimate relationship of love with God.

Even a Mighty Warrior
Even a Mighty Warrior
Even a Mighty Warrior
In the early days of my ministry as a pastor of an immigrant church, we were not able to build a church of our own. We began meeting on Sundays in a former town hall in Flushing, Queens, New York. During the week, the building was used for many different purposes, but when we gathered there for worship on Sundays, the place was often filled with the smell of cigarettes and alcohol. The atmosphere on the street outside was also rather rough.
Because we wanted to worship in a proper church building, I began knocking on the doors of churches, asking whether we could rent their sanctuary. Some pastors rejected us at the door and would not even meet with us. We experienced rejection after rejection.
Then one pastor agreed to let us use his church for our Sunday worship. He was already renting the church to a multiethnic congregation for Sunday evening worship and was receiving some financial help for the church budget. He allowed our Korean congregation to meet there on Sunday mornings and also on Wednesday evenings. The host congregation met earlier, and we were given the 11:00 a.m. worship hour.
As our Korean church became active and began to grow, some residents living around the church became uncomfortable with us. Some even told us to “go back to your own country.”
One day, the pastor of the host church asked me to come to a meeting with three pastors. When I arrived at the scheduled time, I was surprised to find the church filled with local residents. It was completely unexpected.
The pastor of the multiethnic congregation apologized to the residents and, not long afterward, moved his congregation to another location.
I was caught completely off guard. I stood before the people, looked to the Lord, and first apologized for any inconvenience we had caused. Then I explained the situation.
Most of the residents were descendants of Polish immigrants. I reminded them that their ancestors had also come to America as immigrants. They had lived together, adapted to a new country, and built their lives in a place where the language and culture were different from their own.
I explained that we Koreans had received our education in Korea, had come to America, worked hard, paid our taxes, and were trying to live as good citizens. As first-generation immigrants, we also needed a place where we could gather and support one another.
I reminded them that the American government had permitted us to live here, and I appealed to them: Since we are now neighbors and fellow residents of this community, let us live together in peace.
No one objected. No one opposed what I had said. Instead, I eventually became a pastor who was respected and accepted by the people in the neighborhood.
In the end, the Korean church absorbed and merged with the host congregation, becoming the first congregation in the Presbytery of New York City to merge with a church of another ethnic background.
In the Book of Judges, Jephthah is described as a mighty warrior. Yet Jephthah was the son of Gilead by a prostitute, and because of this, he was rejected by the children of Gilead's wife and driven away from his family.
Even though he was a strong and mighty warrior, he did not fight against them. Instead, he fled and lived in another land.
Later, when the Ammonites attacked Gilead, the elders of Gilead went to Jephthah, looking for a leader who could fight against the enemy. They promised that if he led them to victory, he would become the head of Gilead. Jephthah accepted their offer.
Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon him. Empowered by God's Spirit, he demonstrated the ability of a mighty warrior and won the battle.
Even a mighty warrior, when relying only on his own strength, may have no choice but to flee and seek refuge. But when the Spirit of God comes upon him, he can accomplish great things.
The members of an immigrant church may each be like mighty warriors. Yet even strong and capable people can be pushed aside, disliked, or rejected by the surrounding community. But when the Spirit of God helps us, we can speak to our neighbors, win their trust, and bring about something far greater than we could accomplish by our own strength. Our Korean church was eventually able to merge with the local church and become one with the people of the community.
When we are excluded from the larger community—not only because of racial differences, but also because of differences in our bodies, minds, ways of thinking, or ways of life—we can still turn our eyes to God the Father, the author and perfecter of our faith. He is righteous and faithful. He helps us and does not allow us to remain in disappointment.
There is a Korean saying, “Birds of a feather flock together.” Flowers of the same kind look more beautiful when they grow together, and birds of the same kind often appear more beautiful when they gather together. In a multiracial society, it can also be beautiful and beneficial for people of different ethnic backgrounds to gather together, preserve their identity, and contribute their own strengths to the larger community.
Yesterday, I worshiped at Princeton Alliance Church. There I saw a truly multiracial congregation gathered together, with several pastors and a Korean senior pastor leading the congregation. Together, we praised the Lord Jesus, proclaiming again and again that He is holy and worthy.
As I sensed the presence of the Spirit of the Lord among us, I experienced a glimpse of the kingdom of God here on earth. My heart was filled with grace and gratitude, and I experienced deep joy and happiness in worship.

Become Like Little Children
Become Like Little Children
Become Like Little Children
In Matthew 18, Jesus teaches that whether a person is a child or an adult, everyone is equally precious in the sight of God. As people gathered around Jesus, adults brought their young children to Him so that they might receive His blessing. But the disciples tried to turn the children away.
A culture that excludes children can exist anywhere. In Korea, too, there was a time when children had no place among gatherings of adults. But Jesus rebuked His disciples and taught them that such little ones are precious in the kingdom of heaven. He then told the parable of the lost sheep.
A shepherd who has a hundred sheep realizes that one is missing. He leaves the ninety-nine and searches until he finds the one that is lost. When he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and returns home. The ninety-nine are equally important, but Jesus emphasizes the special joy of finding the one that was lost.
Elsewhere, Jesus tells of a woman who has ten silver coins but loses one of them. She searches every corner of the house until she finds it and rejoices. He also tells of a father who has two sons. One of them takes his inheritance, leaves for a distant country, wastes everything in reckless living, and eventually returns home as a beggar. The father waits for him, welcomes him, and rejoices when he sees his lost son return.
The Pharisees of Jesus' day wanted to be recognized and desired the places of honor at banquets. But Jesus taught people instead to take the lower place. The standard of the Lord is different. He speaks of those who come to Him with the humble heart of a little child—those who recognize their weakness, even when they feel pushed aside by others, and who earnestly long for the Lord and His kingdom.
Jesus also told of a man who prepared a great banquet and invited many people. But they all made excuses, saying that they had other things to do. So the man went out into the streets and invited people to come. Yet there were still empty places. He then sent his servants farther out, even to the roads and countryside, and brought in everyone they could find until the banquet hall was filled.
At the banquet of God's kingdom, both adults and children are invited to participate. Not only Jews, but also people from Galilee, Samaria, Tyre, and Sidon would respond to the call and come to fill the empty places.
There is a well-known story about Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of India. While reading Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, he was deeply moved and came to understand that the gospel was needed to address India's caste system. During a visit to South Africa, he went to a church. But when the person who was guiding people saw him, he told Gandhi, "You should go to the church across the street."
Gandhi was deeply disappointed. He is said to have responded, in effect, "If this is what Christianity is really like, I will remain a Hindu for the rest of my life."
Because of realities like this within Christianity, many people become disappointed with the church and leave. The four people for whom I pray—Lee Pil-joo, Shin Kyung-sook, Park Sung-ho, and Park Song-ja—are people who became disappointed by others in the church and eventually left. I continue to pray for them, but it is not easy to lead them back to the Lord.
Perhaps this is why we need to become like little children. A little child is less inclined to judge and criticize others and is more willing to come with a simple and humble heart. Such a person is well suited for the kingdom of God.
Until these people return and take their places at the banquet, there will always be empty seats. Therefore, the Lord continues to say to us, "Go and fill the empty places."
The banquet is not complete while there are still empty seats.

What Is in Your Hand?
What Is in Your Hand?
What Is in Your Hand?
Among the people we encounter in the Bible, there are few who were as well equipped in both knowledge and ability as Moses.
He was born into a Levite family and, because of Pharaoh’s policy, was placed in the river. But he was discovered and rescued by Pharaoh’s daughter and adopted as her son. He grew up in the royal palace, receiving a broad education that might have prepared him even for a future as a king. He would have been trained not only in literature and learning, but also in the skills and disciplines necessary for life in the royal court, perhaps even in military arts and the practices of the Egyptians. Yet he still carried the identity of a Hebrew. Eventually, he became a murderer and fled from Egypt. For forty years he lived as a shepherd and established a family.
While Moses was living a peaceful and stable life tending sheep, his fellow Hebrews were crying out under the unbearable suffering of slavery. God determined to deliver them and came to Moses, who was tending his sheep, and entrusted this great task to him.
Moses was eighty years old. After building a family and settling into a stable life, it was not easy for him to leave that life behind and begin a completely new adventure.
Moses wanted to know who was sending him, so he asked God His name. God answered, “I AM WHO I AM,” and revealed Himself as the LORD. What an extraordinary name! The One who exists by Himself, who brings all things into being, and who is the source of everything in the universe is certainly different from the many gods of Egypt. Moses tried to decline the calling, but God did not retreat.
Then God asked him, “What is that in your hand?”
“A staff,” Moses answered.
God told him to throw it on the ground. When he did, it became a snake. When Moses grabbed it by the tail, it became a staff again.
Moses also said that he was not a good speaker. But God asked, in effect, “Who makes a person able to speak or unable to speak? Who gives sight or makes a person blind?” The LORD was showing Moses that when He chooses to use someone, He can use that person just as he is and use whatever he already possesses.
What is truly remarkable is that the LORD God does not choose to accomplish His work entirely by Himself. He chooses to work through people. When God determines to use someone, it does not matter what that person has, what kind of person he is, or what limitations he may have. What matters is whether he responds to the Lord’s call.
When Jesus began His ministry, He did not go to Jerusalem to find people with impressive education, social status, and positions of honor. Instead, He went to the Sea of Galilee, a region that could be regarded as remote and overlooked, and called fishermen who had experienced failure in their work: “Follow me.”
They left their boats, their nets, and even their parents behind and followed Him. Their decision and obedience were important. The Lord then worked with them and accomplished His purposes through them.
God does not work alone. He looks for people through whom He can work. To be found and chosen by Him, to hear His calling, and to respond to that calling is to receive the mission He entrusts to us.
We do not accomplish the work by ourselves. The Lord who calls us is with us and enables us to do His work. Therefore, we become humble instruments held in the hands of the Lord.
God asked Moses what he had in his hand. He used Moses’ staff to accomplish many things and ultimately to lead His people out of slavery. The lesson is that whatever we possess—whatever our abilities, circumstances, or limitations may be—when we are held in the Lord’s hands, He can use us and accomplish His work through us.
A cellphone today contains an enormous amount of information and many useful functions. Yet how much of its potential is actually used depends greatly on whose hands it is in.
Likewise, no matter what talents I have or what my circumstances may be, if I am in the Lord’s hands, what is there that the Lord cannot do through me?
I came from a rural background with many limitations and without any particular special talents. Yet I am grateful that, by placing myself in the hands of the Lord who found me and called me, He has used me and accomplished His work through me to this day.
If God could accomplish so much through the staff that Moses held in his hand and use him to lead His people to freedom, how much more might God accomplish if we become like that staff—an instrument held firmly in the hands of the LORD?
The question is not, “What do I have?” but rather, “Whose hands am I in?”

Difficult to Discern
Difficult to Discern
Difficult to Discern
Because of its geopolitical location, Korea has experienced many wars throughout its history. The First Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War were fought in and around Korea, making the Korean Peninsula a battlefield. When Japan won, Korea eventually became a colony under Japanese rule.
Something similar happened to Israel, which was also located in a geopolitically strategic position. King Josiah is recognized as one of the good kings who reformed the nation according to God’s ways and governed the people well. Yet even he faced repeated crises.
At that time, Israel was geographically situated between two great powers, Egypt and Babylon, which were engaged in conflict. Pharaoh Neco of Egypt wanted to pass through Israel on his way to fight Babylon, but Josiah would not allow him to do so. Neco told Josiah that God had commanded him to fight against Babylon and that he was not coming to fight Israel. He asked Josiah to allow his army to pass through the land according to God’s command. But Josiah disguised himself and went out to stop Neco from passing through.
Then, by a seemingly random arrow shot by one of the soldiers, Josiah was seriously wounded. He was taken back to Jerusalem, where he died.
Josiah found himself in a situation that was difficult to discern. Had God really spoken to Pharaoh Neco? Josiah did not believe Neco’s words. Instead, he went out to stop the Egyptian army from passing through Israel on its way to fight Babylon. Perhaps, as king, he thought he needed to protect the nation by refusing to allow any foreign army to pass through his territory or become involved in a war. Whatever his intention may have been, he failed to listen to the word of God that came through Neco. As a result, he ended up engaging in battle with the Egyptians and was killed by an enemy arrow.
Does God speak only through prophets?
Amos was neither a prophet by profession nor the son of a prophet. He was simply a farmer who tended sycamore trees. Yet God spoke through Amos concerning the coming destruction of Israel.
Today, God does not necessarily speak only through pastors. God can speak to anyone whom He chooses. If He is pleased to do so, He can reveal His will and speak through an elder or an ordinary church member. At times He may speak through a vision or a dream. But often, as we read and hear the Word of God through the Holy Spirit, He speaks to our hearts, and we may later see His word fulfilled.
When I was five years old, God impressed upon me the words of Colossians 3:2: “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Those words became a guiding principle throughout my life.
What is important is to discern God’s word, listen to it, and follow it. This can become a blessing and can determine the direction of our lives.
When I was preparing to enter college, I wanted to go to law school. My parents and teachers all agreed with me and encouraged me to study law. But then someone seemed to call my name and ask me:
“You are going to law school?”
“Yes.”
“What will you do if you go to law school?”
“I suppose I will eventually become a judge.”
“What does a judge do?”
“When there is a dispute, a judge determines what is right and wrong and makes a judgment.”
“Leave judgment to Me. How about you spend your life sharing My love?”
At that moment, I realized that it was God who was speaking to me.
Here I can see the difference between my own thoughts and God’s direction. I could have pretended not to hear Him or simply ignored Him and continued according to my own plans. But my response was, “I understand.” And the conversation ended there.
Then I began to ask, “What is the way for me to share God’s love?” As I sought the answer, I decided to become a pastor. I was advised that English literature would be a good major for preparing for ministry, and I followed that advice.
The woman I was dating said that she would never marry a pastor. But I did not give up. Instead, I persuaded her, and together we continued on the path that I believed God desired. Thus I have lived my life to this day.
Looking back, I discover again and again that God is faithful. He takes responsibility for and guides those who follow His way.
If I were given a new life, I would still want to live not according to my own will, but according to the will of God the Father who sent me. I want to fulfill His purpose for my life.
The Lord is great and powerful. He has consistently ruled over my life and continues to rule over the world. Therefore, I lift up His name and praise Him.

If We Are Asleep
If We Are Asleep
If We Are Asleep
When we lie down in bed at night, we go to sleep expecting to wake up the next morning. We may dream while we sleep, but once we fall asleep, we do not know what is happening around us. In that sense, sleep is like death. When we wake up the next morning, we are alive and begin a new day; but if we do not wake up, we have died. Sleep is like death, and at the same time, death is like sleep.
When people were weeping and mourning because a little girl had died, Jesus said that the child was not dead but asleep. They laughed at Him, but Jesus took the girl's hand and said, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up.” The girl immediately got up.
When Jesus' beloved friend Lazarus died, Jesus said that Lazarus had fallen asleep and that He was going to wake him up. The disciples thought that if Lazarus was sleeping, he would wake up on his own. But Jesus was speaking of his death. When Jesus came to Lazarus' tomb, his sister said that he had been dead for four days and that there would already be a bad odor. Yet Jesus called out, “Lazarus, come out!” Just as one awakens a sleeping person, the Lord called Lazarus to rise, and Lazarus came out of the tomb as though he had awakened from sleep.
Jesus declared that He Himself is the resurrection and the life. He died, was buried in a tomb, and yet He rose again on the third day. He appeared to His disciples and confirmed that those who have died will also rise again.
Saul, a Pharisee, regarded those who proclaimed that Jesus had died and risen again as heretics. He persecuted them, arrested them, and had some of them put to death. But on his way to Damascus, he saw a light brighter than the sun and fell to the ground. Then he heard someone calling his name. When he asked, “Who are You, Lord?” the answer came, “I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.”
The man who had not believed in the resurrection of the dead surrendered to the Lord. He rose and became a witness of the risen Lord Jesus. He went on to proclaim that Christ would come again, just as the Lord had promised.
If the dead are merely asleep, then who would mourn their death? We only need to wait for the morning, because they will rise again.
That morning will be the day when the Lord Himself descends from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. On that morning, all those who have died in the Lord will rise as though they were awakening from sleep. They will welcome the Lord and receive and enjoy eternal life and His kingdom. Therefore, no matter what difficulties and suffering we experience in this world, we should comfort and encourage one another.
The Bible also speaks of those who die without knowing Jesus, their Savior. They will rise at the final judgment and face judgment leading to eternal punishment. Therefore, we must preach the gospel to those who do not believe and who fear death.
Saul, after encountering the Lord, became Paul. He traveled throughout Asia Minor and Macedonia and eventually went to Rome, proclaiming Jesus, the Lord of resurrection and life. Through his ministry, he sought to bring people from darkness into light and from death into life.
Jesus left His disciples the Great Commission as His final command: to go to the ends of the earth and proclaim the gospel.
There is no reason to weep for those who are merely asleep, for they will awaken in the morning. But for those who are facing eternal death and punishment, we should have a heart that weeps for them. With that compassionate heart, we must proclaim the gospel and lead them onto the path of life.
Going Through Great Suffering
Going Through Great Suffering
Going Through Great Suffering
Job, who was known as a righteous man, experienced suffering upon suffering.
As a wealthy man in the East, he suddenly lost all his possessions. Then, while his ten children were celebrating a birthday feast at the home of his eldest son, a great storm caused the house to collapse, and they were all killed. Job said, “The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”
Then painful sores appeared all over his body, from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. He had to scrape himself with a piece of broken pottery. How could such a terrible tragedy happen to a righteous man? Anyone who saw him must have been deeply heartbroken. His wife even told him, “Curse God and die.” Perhaps death seemed better than continuing to live in such misery.
When three of Job’s friends heard about his suffering from a distance, they contacted one another and came to visit him, intending to comfort and console him. When they saw him from afar, they could hardly recognize him because of how terribly he had changed. They wept, tore their clothes, and threw dust on their heads, expressing the deepest possible pain and sorrow.
Then they sat beside Job without saying a word. They simply remained with him in his suffering. They had no words, so they shared his pain through their presence. This was an expression of love and compassion that was more important than words. Through the presence of these friends, Job must have received much comfort and strength.
After seven days of silence, Job began to speak by cursing the day of his birth. He said that if only he had never been born, he would not have had to endure such suffering. This is a thought that people often have when they experience extreme hardship.
Once the conversation began, one statement led to another. They began to ask why Job was suffering. Could anyone suffer without having sinned? His friends spoke about his supposed sins and urged him to repent. But Job called them “physicians of no value” because their words only increased his pain. In his pride, he insisted on his innocence, and their endless argument continued.
They could speak only about what they could see. They did not know what was happening in the unseen spiritual world—that Satan was behind these events and that God had permitted them.
Satan believed that Job's righteousness came from his wealth and good health. He was convinced that if everything Job possessed were taken away, Job would surely turn against God. Therefore, Satan brought one suffering after another upon Job. Yet God did not permit Satan to take Job's life.
Satan, the ruler of the power of the air, goes throughout the world seeking those who love God and are loved by God. He brings trials and suffering upon them in an attempt to destroy their relationship with God.
This began in the Garden of Eden. Satan used lies to deceive Adam and separate him from God, and because he achieved a victory there, Satan has continued to use the same strategy against God's people, just as he did with Job.
The important truth is that even Satan remains under God's authority. When we understand this, we can stand firm and overcome the many trials and temptations Satan brings.
Jesus Himself was tempted by Satan to satisfy three basic human desires. But Jesus overcame every temptation by honoring God and standing firmly on the Word of God. He defeated Satan and began His ministry as our Savior, showing us the way to overcome the same temptations of Satan that we face today.
We may go through many kinds of suffering and difficulties, but behind them there may be Satan's temptations. At the same time, we can know that nothing happens outside the permission of our loving Father God. He holds us and protects us. When we know and believe this, we can stand firm in faith and overcome.
If we accept the truth that God is our loving Father and that we are His beloved children, then no matter what suffering or difficulty we face, we can endure it and overcome it through faith. In the end, we will give thanks to our Father and praise Him.

United, We Live
United, We Live
United, We Live
There is a familiar saying among us: “United, we live; divided, we die.” This saying is true in our everyday lives. I believe that no one can truly live entirely alone.
This is especially true for immigrants. In the early days of immigration, many people arrived in a strange land with dreams for a new life. Yet they had no one they knew and no one to welcome them. They were a minority living among a predominantly white society whose language and culture were different from their own. Finding an apartment, sending their children to school, and getting a job were not easy.
Then Korean churches began to emerge. With the conviction that we can survive and flourish when we come together, people gathered to share information and help one another with the practical challenges of life. Above all, they worshiped God, who governs history and the world, and received strength to face another week in this new society.
Even though some people in the surrounding community treated Koreans as foreigners and told them, “Go back to your own country,” the church became the center of the Korean community and continued to grow.
In the early days of the Book of Acts, there were only a small number of Christians. But when the Holy Spirit came upon them and gave them power to proclaim the Word, three thousand people repented and believed, becoming a new community of faith. Filled with the joy and wonder of experiencing salvation, they gathered together, shared meals, and expressed love for one another.
As their numbers increased, society began to feel threatened and opposition arose because they were regarded as members of a strange new sect. This made it even more important for them to remain together. With great joy and gratitude, they shared what they had. They did not insist on calling their possessions their own, but willingly gave them for the sake of the community so that they could live together in love.
They chose the way of community, united their strength in proclaiming the gospel of salvation, and eventually the gospel spread from Jerusalem to Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Because of that movement, we too have received the gospel.
Koreans are known for their strong sense of independence and intelligence, and many have built successful lives even in unfamiliar lands. The church played a central role in helping them establish themselves. Yet once their lives became more stable, I have seen many leave the church and move forward on their own.
Of course, this can be an expression of personal growth, independence, and a desire to take on new challenges. But as the wise writer says, “Two are better than one.” If we can lower our pride in our own abilities just a little, recognize the value of others, and live with the conviction that we are stronger when we stand together, we can accomplish far more than we could ever accomplish alone.
In the early days of American immigration, people thought that everyone who came into the great “melting pot” of America would melt together and become one. But after a generation passed, we discovered that America was more like a salad bowl, in which each group retained its own identity. Koreans remained Korean, Filipinos remained Filipino, and Central Americans remained Central American.
When people of the same background come together, they can still develop strength and make a meaningful contribution. But what is most important is to recognize that we need one another rather than trying to live alone. We must acknowledge and accept one another, make room for one another, and humbly receive one another as brothers and sisters.
For this to happen, the Holy Spirit must be at work, and the church must stand at the center. We need hearts filled with wonder and gratitude for Jesus, who saved us, and for the great love of God.
Let us praise and thank God, who loved us and bound us together as one church through the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. And let us look forward to seeing the kind of social influence and transformation that took place in the early church taking place again through our church today.
United, we live. Together, in Christ, we can become a greater blessing to the world.

Why Appearance?
Why Appearance?
Why Appearance?
Many years ago, when I was traveling to Korea on a Korean Air flight, I noticed that the faces of several female flight attendants looked so much alike that it was difficult to tell them apart. They had all undergone plastic surgery, and before the surgery they had chosen one of several possible facial types. Apparently, they had chosen the same type.
Because appearance is what people see, they wanted to present pleasant faces to passengers and make them feel good. Since appearance is what can be seen, everyone tends to place great importance on it.
In the early days of immigration, I once visited a family who lived with their mother in a tiny one-room apartment. There was hardly enough space even for me to sit down. Yet their son had bought a Cadillac and was sleeping in the car at night.
Why would he do such a thing? He wanted to look successful in the eyes of people who judged others by their appearance. But the reality of his life was hidden from view.
When Samuel, as a man of God, was sent to the house of Jesse to choose a new king to replace Saul, whom God had rejected, Jesse brought his sons before Samuel one by one. When Samuel saw Eliab, the firstborn, he thought that his height and appearance were surely suitable for a king. But the LORD had already rejected him. God told Samuel, “People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
All seven of Jesse's older sons appeared before Samuel, but God said that none of them was the one He had chosen. From their outward appearance, they all seemed well qualified, so it must have been difficult for Samuel to understand why God rejected them all. Yet God was looking at something that Samuel could not see.
People naturally judge and make decisions based on outward appearance. When Jesus was invited to eat with His disciples, the Pharisees criticized them because they ate without first washing their hands. They considered the food they touched with unwashed hands to be defiled.
But Jesus taught that it is not what enters a person from the outside that defiles him. Rather, it is what comes from within. He said that from within, from the human heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness (Mark 7:21–22). These are the things that truly defile a person.
We look at outward appearance, but these things are invisible. If we could see all of them in one another, how could anyone live closely with another person?
It is like a tomb containing a decaying body and giving off a foul smell, while the outside of the tomb is decorated with flowers and made beautiful. People see the decorated exterior and may be pleased with it, without knowing what is inside.
When people marry and establish a family, however, they gradually discover that the inner person is more important than outward appearance. At the time of marriage, people are often attracted by outward conditions—appearance, possessions, education, social position, and other visible qualities. Yet one survey of one hundred married men and women reportedly found that only twenty women were satisfied with their marriages, while only three men were satisfied. Whether or not those exact numbers are reliable, they certainly remind us of the realities that can emerge within a family.
But what about a person whose outward appearance is lacking while the inner person is truly valuable?
Jesse told Samuel that there was still his youngest son, but he was out tending the sheep. He was the last of the sons and apparently was not even considered important enough to be brought to the gathering.
Samuel said, “Send for him. We will not sit down to eat until he arrives.”
When David came, he was described as having a healthy, ruddy appearance, beautiful eyes, and a handsome face. But what mattered most was not what Samuel saw with his eyes. The LORD saw David's heart.
God chose David because he was a man after His own heart, and through David He accomplished His purposes in Israel and brought about a great part of Israel's history.
Then why do human beings focus so much on outward appearance?
Perhaps if we could see everything inside a person, we would discover many of the ugly things already mentioned. It might become difficult even to draw close to one another. And when we saw such things within ourselves, we might become disappointed and discouraged with ourselves and be tempted to hide behind hypocrisy.
Perhaps, therefore, God has allowed us to live by what can be seen rather than by constantly seeing the deepest parts of one another's hearts. We decorate our appearance, appreciate beauty, and find joy in what is pleasant to see.
Yet even when people are imperfect, living together, getting to know one another, adjusting to one another, and seeking harmony are also things the Lord desires for us. Through this, He teaches us to have greater generosity, hope, faith, and patience.
For all of this, we praise the Lord.

Hiding in Fear
Hiding in Fear
Hiding in Fear
When we are children, we often play hide-and-seek. We hide ourselves while calling out, “Hide well! I can see your hair!” Then we let our little children search for us and allow them to experience the joy of finding us. It is much like the joy of finding a hidden treasure. But when someone has committed a crime and is being investigated, hiding is very different. Such a person hides out of fear, knowing what he has done wrong and fearing the punishment he may receive. When the authorities search for and find someone who is wanted, there may be a sense of satisfaction for those who are seeking him, but the person who is caught will feel shame and fear.
The first account of someone hiding in fear appears in Genesis 3. There we read about Adam, the first man created by God, and the woman whom God made for him. God desired to be in fellowship with them, and they honored God and shared love with one another. One day, the two became ashamed of their nakedness and covered themselves with leaves. Then, when they heard the sound of God coming near, they hid among the trees because they were afraid. When God called them, they spoke for the first time about their nakedness and their fear. God made them understand that this had happened because they had eaten the fruit that He had commanded them not to eat.
Rather than simply admitting their wrongdoing, they explained how it had happened, as though they did not fully recognize that what they had done was sin. Adam said that the woman had given him the fruit, and the woman said that the serpent had persuaded her to eat it. God held the serpent accountable and declared that it would crawl on its belly and eat dust all its life. He also declared that there would be enmity between the serpent and the woman, and between their offspring: the woman's offspring would crush the serpent's head, while the serpent would strike his heel.
Here we see something important. Before receiving its punishment, the serpent does not appear to recognize that what it has done is wrong. Adam and the woman likewise knew that they were naked, felt shame, and hid in fear, but rather than recognizing that their actions had brought about these consequences, they merely explained how the event had happened. The serpent becomes an instrument of Satan, tempting humanity into sin. Adam also receives punishment and eventually comes to understand how serious and destructive his disobedience was. This was not an isolated incident. Its consequences would continue to affect humanity throughout the generations.
The conflict between the woman's offspring and the serpent would continue. The ancient serpent, Satan, continues to tempt and wound people, but the offspring of the woman will crush his head and ultimately put an end to his power.
When Jesus, the Son of God and the promised offspring of the woman, came into the world, Satan also tempted Him in three fundamental areas of human weakness: what we eat, what we see, and what can make us proud. Yet Jesus resisted every temptation and caused Satan to depart from Him. Satan was not immediately removed from the world, however. The reality of history is that he continues to tempt people whenever he finds an opportunity, seeking to cause them to fall, although his ultimate defeat has already been determined.
Jesus took upon Himself the punishment for all human sin, whether committed knowingly or unknowingly. He died on the cross, paying the price for sin, and rose again on the third day, opening the way to life. He demonstrated His love for humanity by giving eternal life to everyone who believes in Him.
Some people may sin deliberately, knowing that they are doing wrong. Others may fall into sin without fully understanding what they are doing, simply following the circumstances of life. Yet sin is still sin, and there is no way to escape its consequences by our own efforts. Even the Pharisees, who claimed to have kept the law, were confronted by Jesus because of their many sins, including pride and hypocrisy. Paul tells us that there is no one who is without sin. This is the reality of humanity, and therefore no one can say that he does not need the saving work of Jesus.
First, I must personally depend upon the Lord's grace and love, receive His forgiveness and salvation, and then lead those who are facing death because of sin to the Lord so that they may believe and receive life. Beyond that, I am called to proclaim the gospel of life. We should strive together even more to receive with gratitude and share the love of God, who enables us to recognize our sin and shows us the way to life, and the way of salvation that Jesus graciously provides.
Then, rather than hiding in fear because of sin, people will enter into a close and loving relationship with the eternal God. And in that relationship, the kingdom of the Lord will be revealed among us.

If We Are Children of God
If We Are Children of God
If We Are Children of God
When I was growing up with the parents who gave me life, they provided for my education without ever making me worry about the cost of tuition. Whenever I became ill, they did everything they could to make me well, even to the point of selling their land if necessary. Through this, I came to understand how great the love of parents for their child can be. Before I even had a chance to worry about how I would handle something on my own, my parents were already looking ahead, anticipating what might happen and making preparations for me.
Jesus knows the daily circumstances of people living in this world, and He speaks to us about them. He knows how we worry about what we will eat, what we will drink, and what we will wear. He asks us to look at the birds of the air. Do they worry about what they will eat? Do they starve to death or perish because they have no clothes to keep them warm? He also tells us to look at the lilies of the field. Their beauty is greater than the splendor of Solomon dressed in all his glory, yet God Himself takes care of them.
If that is so, what should we, as children of God, worry about? How could children be compared with birds or lilies? Our heavenly Father knows what we need, and He cares for us and provides for us.
What we can do, therefore, is not to live in anxiety but to seek the glory of our Father. Jesus tells us, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.” This means following His rule, seeking that His will be done, and living in a way that fulfills what He desires.
Because my earthly parents did so much for me, I worked hard in my studies. At the same time, with the help of my heavenly Father, I was admitted to college at the top of my class and later earned my degree. My parents were deeply satisfied and joyful. When I was healed from a life-threatening illness and was able to live a normal life, marry, and eventually go abroad to study, these things became sources of great joy and pride for them.
There was also a time when my mother suffered severe pain in her spine after a fall. When she went to the hospital, she was diagnosed with spinal cancer, and the doctors said there was no treatment available. They told the family to take her home and care for her, which meant, in effect, that we should simply wait for the day of her death.
At that time, I was studying abroad, but I returned home during my vacation. After making many inquiries, I took my mother to Seoul National University Hospital and met a specialist in spinal disease. He told us that he could not cure the cancer, but that surgery might reduce her pain. We decided to proceed with the operation and asked many people to pray for her.
God graciously healed my mother. She lived another twenty-five years, and before she entered the Lord's kingdom at the age of ninety-one, she spent six years with us in the United States. During that time, my mother once said to me, “You have repaid all the grace you received from your parents.”
Of course, I could never repay my parents to the same extent that they had cared for me. But I believe that if I do my best to care for their well-being and health, that is what I should do as their son.
Likewise, I can never fully comprehend or repay all the love my heavenly Father has given me. Yet while I live on this earth, I believe that my calling is to exalt the name of the Lord, to acknowledge and proclaim that God truly is God, and to make His glory known through my life.
So I pray and live each day with this desire:
“Lord, while I live, let my life reveal Your glory; and when I die, let my death also glorify You.”

Even in the Face of Fierce Opposition
Even in the Face of Fierce Opposition
Even in the Face of Fierce Opposition
When Judah fell to Babylon, many of its people were taken into exile, and the walls of Jerusalem were destroyed. Then Babylon itself fell, and Persia came to power, allowing the people of Israel to return to their homeland.
The situation they found in Jerusalem was completely different from what they had known before. The city and the temple had been destroyed, and the land lay in ruins. Yet the people were so busy simply trying to survive that they had no strong leaders or sense of independence to rebuild their nation.
When Nehemiah, an official serving the king of Persia, heard this news, he obtained permission to take leave and returned to Jerusalem. He began rebuilding the walls, connecting the broken sections, and eventually the wall had been restored to about half its original height.
When their enemies heard about this, they became furious and tried to stop the work. Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the people of Ashdod threatened the builders with words and even prepared to use force against them. Even some of the people of Judah joined them, saying, “There is too much rubble, and we are losing our strength.” Together with the enemies, they tried again and again—ten times—to make the people stop rebuilding the wall. Perhaps they thought that simply staying alive was more important than rebuilding the wall.
Nehemiah’s rebuilding project therefore faced extremely serious opposition.
Nehemiah, however, prayed to God together with the people. As their leader, he also organized them to carry weapons and stand guard. The stronger the opposition became, the more carefully he positioned armed guards so that the enemy would have no opportunity to attack. He continued the work without giving up.
When we see an enemy approaching, we naturally become frightened and may think that we should stop what we are doing. But Nehemiah looked instead to the Lord, the great and awesome God. He prayed to Him, continued the work, and at the same time made thorough preparations for any possible attack. They worked while remaining armed and guarded the city day and night.
Finally, after only fifty-two days, the wall of Jerusalem was completed. The people dedicated it to God and praised Him.
When we look to the Lord and our relationship with Him is restored, God works through His power. He defeats our enemies, protects His people, and enables us to accomplish the work He has given us.
This year, as the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary of independence, President Trump held an event dedicating America once again to God. In recent years, America has moved in an increasingly human-centered direction, not only accepting homosexuality but also placing some of its advocates in positions close to the highest levels of government. The nation has also faced serious problems related to an open border, illegal immigration, drugs, and crime. The rule of law and social order have been seriously challenged.
As President Trump has sought to rebuild the nation’s law and order, he has faced threats to his life on three occasions. Yet he has not retreated. He continues to move forward, seeking to carry out his work while praying for God’s protection and guidance.
I believe and pray that the Lord will protect America and enable it to fulfill its role as a light on a hill, shining before the nations.
What happens to a nation also happens in the lives of individuals. We all encounter opposition, difficulties, and moments when we are tempted to give up. But if what we are doing is for the Lord and for the good of the community, we should seek God’s help, refuse to become discouraged, and use the wisdom God gives us.
If we continue moving forward with hope for the day of restoration, the work will eventually be accomplished in God’s appointed time.

Though He Dies, He Shall Live
Though He Dies, He Shall Live
Though He Dies, He Shall Live
When I was a child, I witnessed several times the passing of elderly members of my family. It seemed as though each of them was struggling desperately against death, as if wrestling to escape it. Their faces showed that they did not want to die and were afraid of death.
But when I witnessed my grandmother's final moments, I learned something entirely different.
Her two sons and other family members were gathered around her. My grandmother took the hand of her eldest son, my father, and said, “I am leaving tonight. While I was alive, you did not believe in Jesus. But when I die, you too must believe in Jesus and come to the heaven where I am going. Let us meet again there.”
Although I was only a child, I could see the striking difference between those who were afraid of death and my grandmother, who saw death not as an end but as a departure to heaven. That experience strengthened my faith in the kingdom of God. Everyone dies, but for my grandmother, death was not the end or disappearance. Life continued into eternal life.
Jesus had a family whom He loved. Lazarus, Martha, and Mary lived in Bethany, near Jerusalem. Even those whom Jesus loved became sick and died. When Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick, He waited two more days before saying, “Let us go back to Judea” and that He was going to awaken His friend.
By then, Lazarus had been dead for four days. His body was already decaying in the tomb, and there was an odor. Martha led Jesus to the tomb. Jesus also wept. His tears showed how deeply He loved Lazarus, and He joined Himself to those who were grieving and weeping.
Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give You whatever You ask.”
Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
Martha answered that she knew he would rise again at the resurrection on the last day. But Jesus then revealed who He Himself was:
“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives by believing in Me will never die.”
Martha then made a clear confession of faith: “You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”
According to that faith, Jesus went to the tomb and called, “Lazarus, come out!” And Lazarus came out alive. Jesus demonstrated that He Himself is the resurrection and the life.
Jesus is the source of life. When God first formed human beings from the dust of the ground and breathed into their nostrils the breath of life, they became living beings. Jesus was already working with the Father in the giving of life. It is the Spirit of God who gives life to the body, and when that Spirit returns, the person lives.
The spirit does not perish. When the spirit departs, the human body is only a body formed from dust; it returns to the dust and eventually decays. To call back the spirit and to permit it to remain is the Lord's work.
When Jesus called, “Lazarus, come out!” He restored Lazarus to life. He comforted his grieving sisters and allowed Lazarus to live with them for a while longer.
The most important truth is that Jesus is the resurrection and the life. He has authority over and rules over everything concerning our life and death.
While we live on this earth, we meet family and friends and share love and fellowship with them. But someday comes the day when we must leave this world. Because that separation brings sorrow and pain, we prepare funerals, and we decorate coffins and graves. We remember our loved ones when we see their graves or tombstones.
But if that person believed in Jesus, who is the resurrection and the life, then he or she is now with the Lord, enjoying the joy of eternal life in His kingdom.
My grandmother showed me this truth. I believe that she is now waiting for me.
Even more importantly, I believe the promise Jesus gave His disciples will be fulfilled. He said that He was going to prepare a place for us and that, when it was ready, He would come and take us to be with Him.
I believe that promise, and I look forward to that day. Until then, I will trust our faithful Lord and praise Him.
Until that day comes, I will joyfully carry out the mission entrusted to me in this life. Like Martha's household, I will live by sharing the love and joy that the Lord has graciously given me.

The Way to a Harmonious Community
The Way to a Harmonious Community
The Way to a Harmonious Community
When I first began serving as an interim pastor at a certain church, I was told that the congregation was divided into three factions. There had even been occasions when people got into fights in the church entrance after worship. In particular, I was told that the senior pastor and the youth pastor had once grabbed each other by the collar and fought.
The youth pastor had been thinking about leaving the church, but when the senior pastor suddenly went to Korea, he decided to remain.
The church was located in an area where the three major American automobile companies were based. These automobile companies invited many physicians to the area to provide for the health and welfare of their employees. At one time, every member of the church session was a physician. There were also many highly educated professionals who participated in research and development for the advancement of the automobile industry. They worked hard, taking pride in their expertise and dedicating themselves to the future of their companies.
At the same time, many Korean companies were connected with the automobile industry in order to supply the numerous parts and materials needed for automobile manufacturing. Korean employees were sent to the area to work for these companies. They, too, were treated as professionals and took pride in their work.
All of these people gathered together in one church to worship God, but bringing them into harmony and unity was not easy. It was certainly not an easy task to serve as an interim pastor for less than two years in such a church. All I could do was pray to the Lord and seek the help of the Holy Spirit.
Because elders play an important role in a Presbyterian church, I first arranged a retreat for the elders at a Christian retreat center. Many changes took place there, and we experienced God's grace. When we returned to the church, several elders shared their testimonies during worship about what they had experienced.
As we met for session meetings, we began to laugh together. Some of the elders said that this was the first time they had ever laughed during a session meeting. Laughter can change the atmosphere.
During the week, I also led a Bible study for women who were at home during the daytime. One hundred and thirty women participated, making it the largest weekday Bible study I had ever led. They were spiritually thirsty and eager to learn. As they were transformed through the Word of God and the work of the Holy Spirit, the change extended beyond individuals to their families and the church. Eventually, the church truly became one harmonious community.
This is the kind of church community that the Lord desires to build, just as Paul describes in Ephesians 4.
How, then, can such a community be created?
The key is for each person to live a life worthy of the calling he or she has received. We are to live with all humility and gentleness, patiently bearing with one another in love, and making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
If we constantly try to display all that we have in order to gain recognition, and become disappointed or angry when we are not recognized, peace is broken. When suffering comes, it can spread throughout the entire family or church community, bringing anxiety, tension, and conflict.
A proud person who exalts himself cannot humble himself by his own strength. We need to pray, with the help of the Holy Spirit, that we may recognize that whatever we are and whatever we have become is by the grace of God. I believe that this is the path of humility and gentleness: to obey the Holy Spirit and acknowledge God's grace in our lives.
To accept others even when they are different from us is an expression of patience, and it is also a sign of humility. Rather than putting ourselves first, we should serve others with the attitude of serving the Lord. We should also wisely seek ways to use whatever gifts and abilities we have to contribute as much as possible to the growth and well-being of the community.
There is one Spirit, one body—the body of Christ—and one baptism received in the name of Christ. When we continue in humility, gentleness, and patience, we can lead our community into the peace that Christ desires.
All of this begins with the leaders of the church—the pastor and the elders. When they change first, becoming examples to the congregation, the church can move forward in peace.
That is exactly what I witnessed in the church I mentioned at the beginning. The leaders changed first, and the church gradually moved from division and conflict toward harmony and peace.
For this, I praise our faithful Lord.

We Are Not Alone
We Are Not Alone
We Are Not Alone
When I first came to Yale University to study, I decided to travel across the continent by bus from Los Angeles rather than take a domestic flight, in order to save money.
In Los Angeles, I met my senior in the faith, Won Kyung Kim, and stayed with him for a day. Then I took a bus toward Chicago. In Chicago, I met my seminary classmate, Hyung Gil Kang, and stayed with him for another day. From there, I traveled to New York, where I met Hee So Park, a senior from my seminary. His wife worked as a nurse, and they had a comfortable and stable home. I stayed with them for a day, and they helped me find my way to my final destination, New Haven.
None of this had been part of the plan I had made when I left Korea. I simply prayed and asked God for His help. Along the way, I came to realize that God had not left me alone. Wherever I went, He had already prepared someone who would help me.
Joseph was sold into slavery in Egypt because of the jealousy of his brothers. Yet God was with him. Through Joseph, God preserved Egypt during a severe famine, and Joseph was appointed governor because of his remarkable wisdom and policies. He eventually invited his family to Egypt, and the seventy members of Jacob's family who came there began to prosper and multiply over the years.
But a new king arose who did not remember Joseph. Instead, he became afraid of the Israelites because they had grown into a great nation. He made them slaves and forced them to perform hard labor. They suffered under their harsh oppression, groaning and crying out for help. Their cries reached the God of heaven.
God heard their cries. He saw how their taskmasters were oppressing them, and He knew their suffering. He remembered the covenant He had made with their ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Then God came down to deliver them from their oppression and from the power of the Egyptians, and He determined to lead them into the land He had promised to their ancestors.
For this purpose, God called Moses, who had been rescued from the river as a child, and through him He carried out His plan.
The descendants of Abraham, the people of Israel, experienced many trials and hardships. Yet they were never alone. God was always watching over them. He heard their cries, drew near to them, delivered them, and guided them toward the land flowing with milk and honey.
This is the way the Lord works. Because God was with them, Israel endured, overcame many hardships, and continued to grow even in the midst of suffering.
My life, too, has never been a life lived alone.
When I left my mountain village at the age of twelve to go to the city for my education, God gave me this promise: “Wherever you go, I will be with you, and I will watch over you and guide you.” That promise has never changed.
Even when I have been weak or sick, or when I have lost the desire to live and felt that I had no hope, I have experienced God encouraging me, giving me new strength, going before me, and leading me forward.
My responsibility is simply to know and acknowledge the God who leads me, to give Him thanks, to obey Him, and to follow where He leads.
My desire now is to make the home where I live a sanctuary of the Lord—to live with Him and walk with Him day by day. And when the day comes for Him to call me, I hope to be taken up like Enoch and go to be with Him.
I have seen that there is a way to go directly to the Lord, without passing through a hospital or a nursing home, as my friends Se Yoon Jang, Jung Jang Bok, and In Sik Kim did when they went home to be with the Lord.
For now, my task is to help those who need my help and to do whatever good I can. But when that work is finished, I believe the Lord will soon call me home.
Therefore, I will look forward to that day and continue to live with thanksgiving and praise, knowing that I am never alone.
The God who was with Joseph,
the God who heard Israel's cries,
and the God who has led me all my life
is still with me today.
We are not alone.
The Lord is with us.

Breaking Free from Misconceptions
Breaking Free from Misconceptions
In today’s devotional reading, I came across a surprising piece of information: more than one billion birds die each year by flying into windows. They see the reflection of trees in the glass and mistake them for real trees, perhaps thinking they are places to find food or materials for building their nests. At other times, they see their own reflection and mistake it for a hostile bird blocking their way. They then charge at it as if preparing to fight, only to injure or kill themselves in the end.
As I have grown older and come to live in this community, which is made up almost entirely of Caucasians, I find myself in an environment very different from what I have known during my 52 years of life in America. Most of the people I meet here are white, and communication is entirely in English.
When I attend activity classes, I cannot always fully understand everything the instructor says. This makes me keenly aware of my limitations. My body is weaker than it once was, I become tired easily, and because of declining eyesight, I sometimes cannot understand or see things as clearly as I would like. At such times, I often feel discouraged and think, “There is nothing I can do anymore.”
Yet I look to the Lord and receive new strength from Him, and I continue to live.
Sometimes we also fall into another kind of misconception. Through our experiences and the knowledge and wisdom we have gained throughout life, we may become convinced that our way of thinking is right. We may insist on our own opinions and conclude that others are wrong.
But this, too, can be a misconception.
People may think differently and live in different ways. Each person has his or her own way of living and often believes that it is the right way. Wisdom is found in recognizing that being different does not necessarily mean being wrong, and in learning to accept and respect one another.
Yet there is one great reality that no one can escape: everyone will die.
People have many different ideas about what happens after death. Some say, “When you die, that is the end.” Others say, “We do not know what comes after death,” or “I do not worry about what happens after death.” Many simply live as they please, according to what seems right in their own eyes.
In a sense, this is like the bird flying into the window because of a false perception. The bird does not recognize the reality in front of it, and its mistaken understanding leads to its death.
But God’s Word clearly shows us the way. There are two paths: the path of eternal life and the path of death. The destination of heaven or hell is determined while we are still alive.
Jesus, the Son of God, said, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” He alone is the true way to life. To believe in Him and follow Him is the wisdom and understanding that we need in this life.
Without Jesus, no amount of wealth, honor, or social position can keep a person from death, nor can any of these things lead a person to eternal life.
In recent years, the Internet has developed tremendously, and many of us have numerous accounts. Yet every account requires a password—a secret code that allows us to enter. If even one letter or one symbol is different, the password will not work.
In the same way, the password for entering eternal life and the kingdom of heaven is Jesus alone.
This password is not something reserved for a select few. It is offered to everyone. To receive and possess this gift is the greatest blessing of all.
Therefore, I praise God with a grateful heart and look forward with joyful anticipation to living with Him forever, standing in His presence and worshiping Him throughout eternity.

Through Many Kinds of Trials
Through Many Kinds of Trials
Through Many Kinds of Trials
Korea has gone through many kinds of trials throughout its history. Poverty was perhaps the greatest of them all. There was a time when people had so little to eat that they had to survive on roots and wild plants. Many even left their homeland and immigrated to other countries simply to make a living. Poverty was not the only hardship. Various diseases became so severe that entire villages were sometimes devastated.
War is another great trial. Korea was invaded by neighboring countries such as China, Japan, and Russia, and the Korean War divided the nation into the democratic South and the communist North. Even today, the war has not officially ended; the two sides remain in an armistice.
Yet, through these trials and hardships, good leaders emerged and called the people to believe, “We too can live well.” They encouraged the nation to change its way of thinking and its habits of life in order to build a new country. Seventy years later, Korea has risen from being one of the poorest countries in the world to becoming one of the world’s ten major economic powers. Some call this a miracle, and I believe it is indeed a miracle—but I also believe it has been a journey on which God has helped and guided us.
James 1 encourages us, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.” The early Christians experienced trials because of their faith. Because they believed in Jesus, they suffered hatred, ridicule, and persecution. James encouraged them, saying that those who endure trials are blessed. Trials produce perseverance, and perseverance leads to maturity, making a person complete and lacking nothing. Those who endure and overcome trials will ultimately receive the crown of life.
The greatest example is our Lord Jesus Christ Himself. He came into the world to experience trials and suffering. His ministry began with His temptation in the wilderness, and throughout His earthly ministry He endured trial and suffering with patience. He was beaten and spit upon. He endured the most severe suffering on the cross and was laid in a tomb. Yet God raised Him from the dead and made Him our Savior. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus showed us that enduring trials with patience is the first step toward the glory God has prepared for us.
I am thankful that the many difficulties I experienced during my life in America became a foundation for comforting and encouraging the church members who were struggling as immigrants. Those experiences helped me understand their hardships and encourage them to persevere.
Hardships are still hardships, and they are never easy to endure. But whenever difficulties come, I turn to the Lord in prayer and ask Him for wisdom and help. He gives me strength and enables me to overcome. The Lord is good and righteous. He holds the crown in His hand, encourages us, and gives us renewed strength. Therefore, I continue to depend upon Him and live with thanksgiving.
Even now, in the circumstances in which I find myself, I look to the Lord all the more, depend upon Him, and wait for His kingdom.
