하늘의 문 The Gate of Heaven 사방이 신으로 막힌 산골에서 지라는 한 소년이 답답함을 느끼면서 하늘에 날아가는 비행기를 보며 어디엔가 다른 세계가 열려 있는 것과 하늘이 그 세계로 통하는 문이라는 것을 깨달으며 자기도 그 문을 통해 다른 세계로 나아갈 꿈을 꾸었다 야곱은 형을 속이고 두려움으로 도망하며 빈 들에서 밤을 만나 돌을 베개하고 잔다. 하늘에 닿은 사닥다리에 천사들이 오르내리고 그 위에서 하나님의 음성이 들린다. 내가 너를 복 주고 너는 세상에 복이 되리라. 네가 어디로 가든지 내가 함께 하리라 한다. 앞날을 알 수 없는 어둠에서 그는 열린 세계를 보며 그곳을 하늘의 문이라 하였다. 그는 그 문에 들어가 앞날을 향해 걸었다. 오랜 고난의 세월을 보내며 하늘의 문 비전으로 열 두 아들을 낳고 하나님은 신실하게 약속을 이루어 이스라엘 나라를 건립하고 오늘 크리스찬 믿음이 조상이 되게 하셨다. 산골 소년은 하늘의 문을 따라 넓은 세계를 경험하며 준비하여 막힌 땅 북한을 위시하여 6대주 30여나라에 주의 사랑과 생명을 나누며 닫혀 있는 많은 사람에게 하늘문을 열어주는 심부름을 하였다. 요한은 복음을 증거하다 잡혀 외딴 섬 동굴에 갇혀 있지만 그는 열린 하늘문을 통하여 새로운 세계 하나님 나라를 보았다. 보좌에 앉은 이가 보석같이 빛나고 무지개로 둘러 싸여 있다. 주변의 네 생물이 거룩하다 찬양하고 영광과 권능을 돌리자 보좌 주위 보좌에 앉은 성도들이 엎드려 머리의 관을 벗어 드리며 주를 찬양한다. 그 앞에는 수정 같이 맑은 유리바다가 있다. 바다는 요동하는 세상이지만 이제 안정되고 아름다운 질서와 평화다. 요한은 풀려나와 하나님의 사랑과 통치를 평생 나누는 감격을 가졌다. 일이 막히고 어려워 앞이 보이지 않은 답답함이 얼마나 많은가! 눈을 들어 하늘문을 바라보면 새로운 삶과 세상이 열리는 것을 발견할 것이다. The Gate of Heaven A boy growing up in a mountain valley surrounded on all sides by high ridges felt a deep sense of confinement. Watching airplanes soar across the sky, he realized that beyond this closed world, there was another realm—and the sky was the gateway to it. He began to dream of passing through that gate into a new world. Jacob, fleeing in fear after deceiving his brother, came to a barren wilderness as night fell. Using a stone for a pillow, he lay down to sleep. In a dream, he saw a ladder reaching up to heaven, with angels ascending and descending, and above it he heard the voice of God: “I will bless you, and you will be a blessing to the world. Wherever you go, I will be with you.” In the darkness of an unknown future, Jacob saw an open world and called that place The Gate of Heaven. With new vision, he rose and walked toward his future. Through many long years of hardship, Jacob held on to that heavenly vision. He became the father of twelve sons, and God faithfully fulfilled His promise, building the nation of Israel and making him an ancestor of today’s Christian faith. The mountain boy, too, followed that heavenly gate, experienced a wider world, and prepared himself to share God’s love and life. He journeyed to over 30 countries across six continents, including the closed land of North Korea, opening the gate of heaven for many who were shut off from hope. John, while proclaiming the Gospel, was captured and confined to a cave on a remote island. Yet through the open gate of heaven, he saw a new world—the Kingdom of God. On the throne sat One who shone like precious jewels, encircled by a rainbow. Around the throne, four living creatures sang “Holy” and gave glory and power to Him. The elders surrounding the throne fell down, laying their crowns before Him in worship. Before the throne was a sea, clear as crystal—a sea that once symbolized the restless, chaotic world, now stilled into beauty, order, and peace. John was later released, carrying for the rest of his life the wonder of God’s love and reign. How often do we feel stuck, blocked, unable to see a way forward? Lift up your eyes to the gate of heaven, and you will discover that a new life and a new world stand open before you.

너희 생명이 무엇인가?What is Your Life? 건강하던 사람이 갑자기 병이 들더니 세상을 떠나는 것을 보며 생명이 무엇인가 질문한다. 생명은 살아 있다는 말이다. 살아 있는 것은 숨을 쉬는 것으로 안다. 숨을 쉬면 살아있고 숨이 끝나면 죽음이다. 숨은 태어나면서 시작한다. 생명으로 태어나는 것은 자신이나 부모가 원하여 되는 것이 아니라 주어지는 것이다.누가 생명을 주나? 하나님이다. 그가 생명을 주시고 다스린다. 주신 자도 하나님이요 취하시는 자도 하나님이라 고백한다. 생명인가 죽음인가를 가르는 숨은 안개와 같아 잠간 지나간다. 생명이란 무엇인가> 생명은 살아라는 명령이다. 피덩어리로 태어날 때 살아라 명하신다. 첫 사람에게 호흡을 주시고 생육하고 번성하라 하신다. 그것이 복이라 한다. 결혼하고 출산하며 생명을 번식시킨다. 살라는 명령으로 숨을 쉬고 움직이고 활동하며 또 먹는다. 병은 고난을 주고 생명을 빼앗는 경우가 많다. 내가 죽음의 병이 들었을 때 하나님은 “죽지 않고 살아라” 말씀하시고 의사와 간호사 약과 병원을 통하여살게 하셨다. 생명은 삶의 사명이다. 생명이 주어질 때 하나님은 각자에게 맞는 재능과 능력을 주시고 그것으로 개척하라, 땅을 파고 가축을 기르고 자녀를 낳아 기르기 위하여 열심히 일한다. 자녀를 교육시키고 사회에 기여하는 인물로 만들어낸다. 때로 가정을 이루지 않아도 사회에서 많은 일을 하고 후진을 양성하기도 한다.큰 사명은 생명의 주인 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하는 것이다. 사명은 시작이 있고 마침이 있다. 한 사명이 끝나면 다른 사명이 주어지기도 하지만 땅의 사명이 끝나면 그것은 영원한 생명으로 연결이 된다. 영원한 생명은 둘로 나누이며 하나는 영광스런 천국이요 하나는 고통의 지옥이다. 천국 영생의 길은 땅에 살아 있을 때 준비한다. 세상을 사랑하여 하나님이 아들을 주시고 누구든지 그를 믿고 영접하면 그 사람은 하나님의 자녀가 되고 하나님의 영광스런 영원한 생명을 가진다. 땅의 생명에는 시작과 끝이 있지만 생명 자체는 하나님과 같이 무한하다. 땅에 주어진 생명은 안개와 같이 잠간이지만 하늘 영생을 준비하는 기간이다. What Is Your Life? Life means being alive. We know something is alive because it breathes. If it breathes, it is alive; when breathing ends, it is death. Breath begins at birth. Being born with life is not something we or our parents choose—it is given. Who gives life? God does. He gives life and governs it. We confess that the One who gives is God, and the One who takes away is also God. The breath that separates life from death is like a mist—it passes in a moment. Life is a command to live. When we are born as a lump of flesh, God commands us to live. To the first man, He gave breath and told him to be fruitful and multiply. This, He said, is a blessing. We marry, bear children, and multiply life. By His command to live, we breathe, move, act, and eat. Sickness often brings suffering and sometimes takes away life. When I once faced a deadly illness, God said to me, “You shall not die, but live,” and He caused me to live through doctors, nurses, medicine, and hospitals. Life is a mission. When He gives life, God also gives each person the talents and abilities suited to them, and says, “Go, work and cultivate.” People dig the ground, raise livestock, bear children, and work diligently to raise them. They educate their children and shape them into contributors to society. Some may not marry, yet they accomplish much in the world and train the next generation. The greatest mission is to love the Lord, the Giver of life, and to love your neighbor. Every mission has a beginning and an end. When one mission ends, another may be given. But when our earthly mission is finished, it leads to eternal life. Eternal life is divided into two: one is the glorious heaven, and the other is the place of suffering—hell. The way to heaven and eternal life must be prepared while living on earth. God so loved the world that He gave His Son, and whoever believes in and receives Him becomes a child of God and inherits God’s glorious, eternal life. Earthly life has a beginning and an end, but life itself—like God—is infinite. Life on earth is brief, like a mist, but it is the time given to prepare for the eternal life in heaven.

불공평한 세상에서 Living in the Unfair Society 80년대 초 유수한 대학에서 공학박사 학위를 하고 미국 회사에서 일하는 교우에게 한국에 많은 일이 기다릴텐데! 하였더니 조국에서 출신 지역때문에 차별 받기 보다는 차라리 여기에서 당하는 것이 편하다고 하요 나는 너무 놀랐다. 그것은 내가 인식하지 못하던 아픔과 현실이었다. 사람 자체보다는 출신 신분 학벌 성별 아프트 평수 소지물에 따라 불공평한 차별을 하기에 그 부담을 벗어나고자 언어와 문화 인종이 다른 곳에 온 자가 많다. 살기 위하여 밤낮 일을 하면서도 오히려 자유를 누린다고 한다. 미국은 오래 유지하던 흑인노예 제도를 폐지하였지만 여전히 차별은 지속되고 기본 권리의 하나인 투표권이 부여되는데 많은 시일이 걸렸고 교회에서 여자가 장로나 목사의 직분을 가지는데 오랜 세월이 지났다. 예레미야 선지자는 왕과 왕족에게 억압과 탈취 당하는 자를 구하고 외국 나그네와 고아 과부를 돌보며 정의와 공의를 행하면 나라가 든든할 것이나 그러지 않으면 황폐하게 될 것이라 경고하였다. 야고보는 교회에 화려한 옷을 입은 사람이 오면 좋은 자리로 안내하며 그렇지 않는 자와 구분한다고 지적하며 참 경건은 고아와 과부를 환난에서 돌보는 것이라 한다. 세상이나 교회는 많은 다른 사람들로 구성되고 이로서 여전히 많은 차별이 아픔을 준다. 예수께서는 차별과 하대를 당하는 여인 어린이 갈릴리 사람 세리와 죄인들과 가까이 하고 친구가 되며 그들과 함께 살고 삶을 바쳤다. 각 사람의 생명 자체를 공평하고 귀중하게 보셨다. 사람 차별은 지금도 여전히 있다. 이런 사회에서 그리스도인의 삶의 의미와 사명은 무엇인가? 선교지나 자선사업이 아니라 해도 매일 삶의 현장에서 대하는 어려운 자,고통을 겪는 자와 함께 하고 사랑으로 보살피는 기회를 가지는 것이 사명이요 감사가 아닐까! Living in the Unfair Society In the early 1980s, I said to a fellow believer—who had earned a Ph.D. in engineering from a prestigious university and was working for an American company—“There must be so much waiting for you in Korea!” To my surprise, he replied, “I would rather endure the discrimination I face here than be treated unfairly in my own country because of the region I come from.” That startled me, for it revealed a pain and a reality I had never recognized before. In our society, people are often judged and treated not by who they are, but by their birthplace, social class, academic background, gender, the size of their apartment, or their possessions. Many have left that burden behind, coming to a place where language, culture, and race are different, in search of relief from such unfair treatment. They say that even while working day and night just to survive, they actually enjoy more freedom. In America, the long-standing system of Black slavery was abolished, yet discrimination persisted. It took many years before one of the most basic rights—voting—was extended, and it was also a long time before women in the church were permitted to serve as elders or pastors. The prophet Jeremiah warned kings and princes to rescue those who were oppressed and robbed, to care for the foreigner, the orphan, and the widow, and to act with justice and righteousness—promising that if they did, the nation would stand firm, but if not, it would become desolate. James pointed out that if a man wearing fine clothes came into church, he was given the best seat, while others were treated differently. He declared that true religion is to look after orphans and widows in their distress. Both society and the church are made up of diverse people, and thus discrimination still causes deep pain. Jesus Himself drew near to women, children, Galileans, tax collectors, and sinners—those who were despised and treated unfairly. He became their friend, lived among them, and gave His life for them. He regarded every human life as equally precious. Discrimination still exists today. In such a society, what is the meaning and mission of a Christian life? Perhaps it is not only in mission fields or charitable projects, but in daily life—in the workplace, in our neighborhoods—to be present with those who are struggling and suffering, to care for them with love. Could this not be our calling, and even our gratitude?

변하자 않는 사실 Unchanging Facts 저녁과 아침 정오가 변하지 않고 있듯이 우리 삶에 변하지 않는 것이 있다. 다윗은 시편 55편에서 이를 몇가지로 말하고 있다. 근심과 탄식, 억압과 고통이 있다. 친구만 아니라 원수가 참으로 많고 해치는 자들이 있다. 남을 돕고 돌보며 사랑을 베푸는 자가 있지만 사람을 해치고 멸하는 자가 있다. 다윗은 전쟁마다 승리하는 위대한 왕이지만 그에게는 감당하지 못할 어려움이 많았다. 원수에게 쫓기고 특히 아들에게 반역을 당할 때는 맨발로 도망할 정도로 황급하였다. 어찌 그가 편하게 단잠을 잘 수 있었겠나! 사람을 해치는 위선자, 악한 자들이 변하기를 바라지만 그들은 변하지 않는다. 말로나 체벌로 변하지 않는 자가 있다. 입은 미끄럽고 말은 순하여도 마음은 전쟁이요 뽑힌 칼이다. 이들을 대하기가 고통이지만 피할 수가 없다. 그들을 포기하고 잊으려 한다. 사람이 약하고 한계가 있다는 사실을 인정하면 어디서나 도움을 얻고자 한다. 사람은 동료와 함께하고 나라는 서로 동맹하여 힘을 모으고 함께 전쟁에 참여한다. 그것으로 끝나는 것이 아니라 전쟁은 전쟁으로 연속된다. 하나님은 보이지 않지만 그는 변하지 않으시고 그의 공의와 사랑은 변하지 않는다. 그는 어제나 오늘 영원하도록 동일하시다. 어려움을 당할 때 탄식하며 주를 찾고 부르짖는다. 주님은 기다리신 것처럼 그를 받아 주시고 위험과 시험에서 건져 주신다. 하나님은 의인의 요동함을 허락하지 않으시며 악인의 형통함을 영원히 버려두지 않으신다.때로는 내가 부르짖기 전에도 미리 알고 신원하여 주신다. 주의 넓은 가슴으로 나를 품어 주시고 그의 크고 강한 손길이 항상 나를 붙들고 인도하심을 알면 삶의 힘과 소망이 생기고 주를 찬양하고 감사하게 된다. Unchanging Facts Just as evening, morning, and noon do not change, there are things in life that remain unchanging. In Psalm 55, David speaks of some of these facts. There is sorrow and sighing, suppression and suffering. Not only enemies but also false friends surround us, and there are those who seek to harm. While some help others, care for them, and show love, there are also those who destroy and hurt people. David, though a great king who won every battle, faced many hardships he could not bear. He was pursued by enemies, and when his own son rebelled against him, he fled barefoot in panic. How could he have slept peacefully? We may hope for hypocrites and the wicked—those who harm others—to change, but they do not. Some cannot be changed by words or discipline. Their lips are smooth and their speech gentle, yet their hearts are set on war, and their tongues are like drawn swords. Encountering such people brings pain, yet we cannot avoid them. We try to forget and give up on them. When we acknowledge human weakness and limitations, we learn to seek help wherever we can. People join hands with companions, and nations form alliances to share strength and fight together. Yet wars do not end with one battle—they continue. God is invisible, but He does not change. His justice and love are constant. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. In times of trouble, we sigh and cry out to the Lord. And just as if He were waiting, He receives us and delivers us from danger and trial. God does not let the righteous be shaken, nor does He allow the prosperity of the wicked to last forever. Sometimes, even before we cry out, He already knows and acts on our behalf. When we realize that His wide heart embraces us and His great, mighty hand is always holding and guiding us, we gain strength and hope in life. And we respond with praise and thanksgiving.

마지막이 가까이 The End is at Hand

마지막이 가까이 The End is at Hand 알렉산더 대왕은 30세에 페르시아와 인도를 정복하고 더 이상 정복할 땅이 업어 눈물을 흘렸다지만 그는 말라리아 모기에 물린 것으로 32세에 마지막을 맞았다. 6세시 후 탕아 어거스틴은 밤이 깊고 낮이 가까이 왔으니 그러므로 어둠의 일을 벗고 빛의 갑옷을 입자 (롬13:12)는 말씀으로 변화가 일어나 기독교의 성자가 되었다. 베드로 사도는 만물의 마지막이 가까이 왔다며 어떻게 살 것을 권고한다(벧전4:7-11) 무엇보다 정신차리고 근신하여 기도하라 한다. 생명이 하나님에게서 왔고 그의 인도를 받아 살다가 마지막 다시 하나님 앞으로 갈 것이니 그와 소통하며 그의 뜻을 따라 살기를 바라는 마음이다. 무엇보다 서로 사랑하며 상대방의 허다한 죄를 덮어주는 일이다. 남의 허물과 잘못을 생각하며 마음이 상하고 갈등이 일어나는데 이제는 그 허물을 덮어주고 용납하고 받아준다. 누구나 대접 받고 인정 받고 싶은데 그렇지 못하면 원망이 생기지만 마지막에는 남을 먼저 대접하되 받을 생각이나 원망 없이 살라고 한다. 남을 대접하면 인정받고 대접 받고 싶으며 그렇지 않으면 원망하게 된다. 오히려 감사하며 마지막을 맞을 수 있을까? 청지기로 섬기고 봉사하라 한다. 청지기는 주인이 신뢰하고 맡겨준 일을 감사하게 하는 것 뿐이다. 자기를 내세우거나 인정 받고자 함이 아니다. 맡긴 일을 잘 감당하는 것이다. 나를 믿고 특정한 사의 일을 맡긴 주인의 은혜에 감사하며 충성하며 섬기고 마지막에 주인에게 보고한다. 말씀을 가르치고 전하거나 어떤 재능으로 봉사할 때 내가 스스로 힘으로 하는 것이 아니라 하나님이 주신 것으로 하는 것이기에 마지막에는 그 일에 대하여 주인이신 하나님께 영광을 돌리고 그를 높인다. 하나님은 영원히 영광과 존귀를 받으실 분이요 나도 그에게 돌아가기에 그에게 찬송을 드린다. 주님은 나의 시작이요 마지막이라 그를 높이고 찬양한다. The End is at Hand It is said that Alexander the Great, having conquered Persia and India by the age of 30, wept because there were no more lands left to conquer. Yet at just 32, he met his end—reportedly from a mosquito bite that caused malaria. Centuries later, St. Augustine was transformed by the words: “The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light” (Romans 13:12), becoming one of Christianity’s great saints. The Apostle Peter also declared, “The end of all things is at hand” and gave instructions on how believers should live (1 Peter 4:7–11). Above all, he urges us to be sober-minded and self-controlled so that we may pray. Life comes from God, and we are to live guided by Him until we return to Him in the end. Therefore, prayer is vital for staying in communion with God and aligning our lives with His will. Most importantly, we are to love one another deeply, for love covers a multitude of sins. Often, our hearts are troubled by others’ faults, which leads to conflict. But now we are called to cover those faults with love—to forgive, to accept, and to embrace one another. Everyone desires to be appreciated and recognized. When that doesn't happen, bitterness or resentment can grow. Yet in view of the end, we are instructed to serve others first—without expectation, without complaint. Can we live this way, serving and giving with gratitude, even as the end approaches? We are told to serve as stewards. A steward is someone entrusted by the master, carrying out their duties faithfully—not seeking personal glory or recognition. What matters is fulfilling the task entrusted to us. With gratitude for the master’s trust, the steward serves with loyalty and ultimately gives an account to the master. Whether we teach, preach, or serve with any gift we have, we do it not by our own strength, but with what God has given us. In the end, the glory belongs to God, the true Master of all. God alone is worthy of eternal glory and honor—and since we will return to Him, we offer Him our praise. The Lord is our beginning and our end. We exalt and praise His name.

하나님의 거처 Dwelling Place of God

하나님의 거처 Dwelling Place of God 의식주가 필수인 것은 사람만 아니라 많은 생명체가 요구하는 것이다. 어디에 거처를 정할 것인가 중요하기에 한국에서 미국으로 미국에서도 각자 필요를 채워줄 곳으로 옮긴다. 예수께서는 우리를 위하여 거처를 준비하러 가시고 거처가 준비되면 우리를 데리고 가겠다(요14:3)고 하신다. 하나님은 어디에 거처 하시나? 우주와 천지를 창조하신 하나님은 편재 (Omnipresence)시라 어디 계시지 않는 곳이 없다. ‘나는 하늘과 땅에 충만하지 않는가’(렘23:24) 천지를 가득 채우고 있다는 말씀이다. ‘내가 주를 떠나 어디로 가리이까?’ 하늘,땅, 바다 끝. 스올에서도 그를 피할 수 없다 고백한다(139). 어디서나 사람은 하나님을 만나게 되고 그를 피할 수가 없다. 다윗이 전쟁에 나가자 어디에나 하나님이 계셔서 그에게 승리를 주셨다. 하나님을 한 장소에 모시는 작업을 솔로몬이 성전 건축으로 행하였다. 성전을 봉헌하며 주께서 거하신 처소라 하며 들어와 거하소서 기도하였다 십계명을 지성소에 안치하고 사람의 편의를 위해 하나님의 거처에 한계를 정하였지만 하나님은 제한을 받지 않으신다 하나님은 우리와 함께 우리 속에 거처를 삼으신다. 예수께서 떠나심을 걱정하는 제자들에게 주님은 그들을 고아와 같이 버려두지 않겠다고 하시며 인격체 보혜사 성령을 보내어 그들 안에 있게 하고 하나님을 사랑하여 그의 말씀을 지키는 자에게는 ‘우리가 그들과 거처를 함께 하리라;(요14:23). 상부 성자 성령께서 우리와 거처를 함께 하겠다 하신다. 하나님이 말씀이시라 말씀을 마음에 가지면 그곳은 하나님의 거처가 되고 하나님이 우리와 함께 하시는 임마누엘이 이루어진다. 전지전능하신 하나님이 거처를 우리와 함께 하시기에 일어나는 큰 일이 증거가 되어 많은 사람을 주께로 인도하는 것이라면 얼마나 감사한 일인가! Dwelling Place of God The need for food, clothing, and shelter is not unique to humans; many living beings require them. Choosing where to dwell is important, which is why people move—from Korea to America, and within America—to places that best meet their needs. Jesus said He was going to prepare a dwelling place for us, and when it is ready, He will come and take us to be with Him (John 14:3). Where does God dwell? The God who created the heavens and the earth is omnipresent—there is no place where He is not. “Do I not fill heaven and earth?” (Jeremiah 23:24). This means He fills the entire universe. The psalmist asks, “Where can I go from your Spirit?”—whether in heaven, on earth, at the ends of the sea, or even in Sheol, he confesses he cannot escape from God (Psalm 139). Wherever we are, we encounter God, and there is no fleeing from Him. When David went to war, God was with him everywhere and gave him victory. Solomon sought to house God in a physical place through the building of the temple. At its dedication, he prayed, calling it the place where God dwells and asked the Lord to come and inhabit it. The Ten Commandments were placed in the Holy of Holies, thereby assigning a physical location for God’s dwelling for human convenience. Yet, God is not limited by such constraints. God chooses to dwell with us and within us. To the disciples troubled by Jesus’ departure, He promised not to leave them as orphans but to send the Holy Spirit, a personal Counselor, to be with them. To those who love God and keep His word, Jesus promises: “We will come to them and make our home with them” (John 14:23). The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit desire to dwell with us. Since God is the Word, when we have His Word in our hearts, that place becomes His dwelling. Emmanuel—God with us—is fulfilled in that reality. What a blessing it is when the Almighty God dwells with us and His presence becomes a testimony that leads many to the Lord!

성도가 세상에 살면서 A Christian, Living in the Wordld 로마에 가면 로마 사람이 되라는 말이 있다. 소외 당하지 않고 동화되어 살 것이라는 것이다. 다양한 인종이 모여 사는 미국에서 오늘도 힌두 옷 또는 모슬렘 옷을 입은 사람들을 걷는 길에서 만났다. 누가 무엇이라 하든지 상관하지 않고 자기를 지키는 그들이 장하게 보인다. 예수께서 그를 따르던 사람들을 뒤에 두고 아버지에게 돌아가시기 전에 그들을 위하여 마지막 기도한 것이 있다 (요17). 그들을 세상에서 데려가는 것이 아니라 그들을 지키시고 거룩하게 하여 달라고 하였다. 그리스도인을 성도라 함은 거룩한 무리라 함이다. 거룩하다는 말은 구분된다는 의미다. 세상에 살면서 세상을 본받고 따를 것이 아니라 마음의 변화와 새로움을 받아 세상과는 달리 구별되게 하신다. 세상을 뒤로 하고 물러나라는 것이 아니라 하나님의 자녀로 구별된 모습을 보이며 세상이 도전을 받고 그리스도인을 본받도록 하고자 함이다. 예수께서 세상과 다르게 사셨기에 미움을 받고 죽임 당하는 것을 본 제자들이 다가올 박해를 두려워하여 믿음을 포기하고 이전 세상의 삶으로 돌아갈 위험을 아시기에 그들을 지키고 거룩하게 곧 구별되게 하여 달라고 기도한 것이다. 어떻게 거룩하여 구별되게 살 수 있을까? 예수께서 계실 때 그들은 모든 일에 만족하였기에 다른 것에 눈을 돌릴 필요가 없었으나 주님이 떠나시면 어떻게 되나? 예수께서 자기 대신 보혜사 성령을 보내시어 그들 안에 계시게 하였다. 이를 알고 인정하면 예수님이 계실 때와 같이 두려움이나 부족함 없어 거룩함을 유지할 수 있을 것이다. 재자들이 함께 공동체를 이루어 기도하는 가운데 성령이 임하여 능력을 받고 그들은 세상에 변화시키는 큰 일을 행하였다. 교회는 성도의 공동체다. 모여 예배하며 기도할 때 성령으로 충만함과 힘을 얻고 세상에 주의 사랑을 나누며 변화를 일으킬 것이다. 말씀이 거룩하기에 사람을 거룩하게 한다. 하나님의 말씀은 살았고 운동력이 있어 마음의 생각과 뜻을 감찰하여 세상 물결에서 우리를 지킨다. 주의 말씀은 진리다. 세상의 많은 말은 변하고 지나가지만 주의 말씀은 영원히 변치 않는 진리다. 아브라함 시대에 역사했던 말씀이 오늘도 역사한다. 세상은 변하지만 변하지 않는 말씀이 우리 속에 있으면 우리는 세상과 구별되고 세상이 말씀으로 변화될 수 있다. 하나님의 말씀을 받고 깨달으면 마음과 삶에 기쁨이 온다. 기쁨을 주는 세상의 말과 프로그램이 많지만 일시적이고 지나간다. 그러나 주의 말씀은 우리에게 변치 않는 기쁨과 평안을 주기에 ‘주 예수 보다 더 귀한 것은 없네 이 세상 행복과 바꿀 수 없네 ‘노래한다. 세상이 주 믿는 사람들을 따르게 한다. 우리를 택하여 그리스도인으로 부르시고 세상에 보내신 주의 뜻을 알면 거룩하게 살 수 있다. 한 나라의 대사는 어느 나라에 가든지 치외법권을 가지며 그 나라의 법과 제도를 따르지 않고 본국 정부의 지시를 받아 그대로 산다. 그리스도인은 주의 대사로 세상에 살고 있다. 하나님과 직통 연결하여 항상 그의 눈과 귀를 하나님께로 향하고 사명을 수행할 것이다. 세상에 살면서도 ‘땅의 것을 생각하지 말고 위의 것을 찾으라 거기는 그리스도께서 하나님 우편에 앉아 계신다’고 (골3:1) 한다. 거룩함을 유지하기 위하여는 우리가 돌아갈 천국을 바라보는 것이다. 우리 인생이 끝날 날이 다가오지만 언제일지 모른다. 매일 준비하고 주 앞에 설 날을 바라보면 세상에 사는 날을 주를 맞을 준비하는 기간으로 삼는다. 신부가 신랑을 기다리며 자기를 단장하듯이 성도는 거룩함과 정절로 옷 입고 매일을 주 앞에서 주와 함께 살 것이다. 그리스도인이 세상에 살고 있다. 그러면서 세상을 본 받지 않고 주를 닮아 구별되게 거룩한 삶을 사는 주의 대사로 세상에 영향을 미칠 수 있기를 기대한다. A Christian, Living in the World There is a saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” It means to adapt and blend in to avoid being alienated. In America, a nation of many races and cultures, I still encounter people walking down the street wearing Hindu or Muslim clothing. Regardless of what others may say, they hold to their identity, and I find their determination admirable. Before Jesus returned to the Father, He prayed a final prayer for those who followed Him (John 17). He did not ask that they be taken out of the world, but that they be protected and sanctified. Christians are called saints, meaning "holy ones"—those who are set apart. To be holy means to be different, distinct. Living in the world doesn’t mean conforming to it, but being transformed by the renewing of the mind. We are not called to withdraw from the world but to live as God’s children in such a way that the world is challenged and inspired to follow Christ. Jesus lived differently from the world, and for that He was hated and killed. He knew His disciples would fear persecution and might fall away, returning to their former ways. That is why He prayed they would be kept and sanctified—set apart. How can we live as holy, set-apart people? While Jesus was with them, the disciples had no need to seek anything else. But what would happen when He left? Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit, the Helper, to live within them. Knowing and accepting this truth enables believers to live without fear or lack, just as they did when Jesus was physically present. As the disciples prayed together in community, the Holy Spirit came upon them, empowering them to transform the world. The church is the community of saints. As we gather to worship and pray, we are filled with the Holy Spirit and strengthened to share God’s love and bring change to the world. Because God’s Word is holy, it makes people holy. The Word of God is living and active, discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart, and it protects us from being swept away by the world. The Word is truth. While the words of the world change and pass away, the Word of the Lord remains forever. The same Word that worked in Abraham’s time is still at work today. The world changes, but if the unchanging Word dwells in us, we are set apart, and the world can be changed through the Word. When we receive and understand the Word of God, joy fills our hearts and lives. The world offers many messages and programs that give temporary joy, but they quickly fade. God’s Word gives us lasting joy and peace, so we sing: “I'd rather have Jesus than anything this world affords today.” The world sees this joy and is drawn to follow the Lord. When we understand God’s will—that He has chosen us, called us as Christians, and sent us into the world—we can live a holy life. Like ambassadors, Christians live in the world but are not governed by its systems. An ambassador, wherever they are sent, lives by the laws and instructions of their home country. Likewise, Christians live as ambassadors of Christ, directly connected to God, always listening to His voice, and carrying out His mission. Though we live in the world, we are told: “Set your hearts on things above, not on earthly things, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God” (Colossians 3:1). To maintain holiness, we must keep our eyes on the heavenly home to which we will return. The end of our earthly life draws nearer each day, though we do not know when it will come. If we live each day in preparation to stand before the Lord, our time in this world becomes a time of readiness. Just as a bride prepares herself for her groom, the saint prepares daily—clothed in holiness and purity—to live in the presence of the Lord. Christians live in this world. And yet, by not conforming to the world but becoming more like Christ, we can live holy, distinct lives as His ambassadors—and influence the world for Him.
