생명의 도 The Way of Life

생명의 도 The Way of Life 도룰 닦는다고 한다. 길을 닦는다는 말은 다닐 길을 준비하는 것이다. 길은 정해진 목적지에 이르는 과정으로 궁극 목적은 인간 본연에 이르는 것이며 유교와 불교의 가르침이다. 유교에서는 인의예지 희로애락애오욕 4단7정을 이상으로 삼고 불교는 면벽 3년 참선하여 해탈하는 것이 이상이다. 산은 산이요 물은 물이다 한 말로 한 때 유명하게 된 성철 스님은 마지막 세상을 떠나기 전에 자기는 속고 속이고 살았기에 지옥에 갈 것이라 한탄한 것을 보면 십년공부 나무아미타불을 실감하게 하며 사람은 도를 닦고 닦아도 결국은 허무임을 보여준다. 그래도 사람들은 도를 찾는다. 예수께서 전하는 말씀을 듣고자 사람들은 모여들었는데 마가는 그의 말씀을 도라고 하였다. 집에 들어갈 자리가 없고 문 밖에도 자리가 없을 정도로 많은 사람이 모여들었다. 사람들은 도를 찾는다. 특히 가난하고 할 일이 없는 시절은 어디에 살길이 있을까 하고 찾으며 모여든다. 우리는 한 때 말씀으로 도를 전하는 부흥회 사경회에 참석하고 때로는 침식을 준비해여 며칠씩 머무르기도 하였다. 당장 직장이 생기거나 특벌한 길이 열리지 않아도 마음의 힘과 위로 평안을 얻으러 한다. 한 중풍병자를 친구 4명이 메고 예수께 왔으나 인파가 겹겹이요 각자는 그가 가르치는 도에 집중하여 다른 사람에게 관심 가지지 않는다. 부득이 그들은 예수께서 가르치는 집 지붕에 올라가 지붕을 뚫고 중풍병자를 달아 내렸다. 소란하지만 그것이 도를 듣는 길이다. 주께서는 그들의 믿음을 보시고 병자를 치유하여 주셨다. 그곳에서 병자 치유를 중심으로 한 것이 아니고 도를 말씀하고 있었지만 도를 받아들이면 내 마음이 닦아지고 정하게 되며 몸도 정하고 질병이 낫는 것을 보여준다. 그들은 도를 듣고자 모인 무리다. 예수께서는 내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이라 하시며 나를 통하지 않고는 아버지께로 갈 자가 없다고 하신다. 예수님의 말씀만 아니라 그 자신이 하나님 곧 천국에 가는 길, 도라 하신다. 도를 듣고 그를 믿으면 누구나 진리를 발견하고 영원한 생명을 누리게 된다. 오직 하나인 이 도는 오늘 우리에게 주어진 하나님의 말씀이다.예수께서 하신 말씀 하나님의 말씀이 길과 진리요 생명이다. 생명의 도를 듣고 만나면 병자가 고침 받고 눌린 자가 놓임 받고 갇힌 자가 자유를 얻고 사람이 새로워지는 변화가 일어난다. 우리가 가진 성경이 하나님의 말씀 곧 도다. 이 도는 살아 있는 말씀으로 오늘도 나에게 다가온다. 그 도를 따라 그에게 나아가 도를 듣기만 하면 눈과 귀와 입이 열리고 새로운 생명이 시작된다. 이 생명의 도는 내가 닦아서 얻는 것이 아니라 내가 그 앞에 나아가기만 하면 중풍병자를 만나시듯 만나 주시고 나를 주의 사람으로 영생을 얻게 하신다. The Way of Life People speak of cultivating the Way. To prepare a way is to make ready the path on which one will walk. A path is the process of reaching a destined goal, and the ultimate goal is to arrive at our original human nature—this is the teaching of Confucianism and Buddhism. In Confucianism, the ideals are benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom, along with the proper ordering of the seven emotions—joy, anger, sorrow, fear, love, hatred, and desire. In Buddhism, the ideal is liberation attained through years of meditation, even facing a wall in contemplation for three years. The monk Seongcheol, who once became famous for saying, “Mountains are mountains and waters are waters,” lamented before his death that he had lived deceiving others and himself and would go to hell. His words make one feel the futility of long years of chanting “Namu Amita Buddha,” showing that no matter how much a person cultivates the Way, it ultimately ends in emptiness. Yet people continue to seek the Way. When people gathered to hear Jesus speak, Mark called His message “the word” (the Way). So many assembled that there was no room left inside the house or even outside by the door. People search for the Way. Especially in times of poverty and joblessness, they gather asking, “Where is the way to live?” There was a time when we attended revival meetings and Bible conferences where the Way was preached, sometimes staying for several days with food and lodging prepared. Even if a job did not immediately appear or a special opportunity did not open, we sought strength, comfort, and peace for the heart. Four friends carried a paralytic to Jesus, but the crowd was packed tightly, each person absorbed in the Way He was teaching, paying little attention to others. At last, they climbed onto the roof of the house where Jesus was speaking, opened it up, and lowered the paralytic down. Though it caused a disturbance, that was their way of hearing the Way. Seeing their faith, the Lord healed the man. Though Jesus was teaching the Way rather than focusing on healing, the event showed that when one receives the Way, the heart is cleansed and made pure, the body also restored, and disease healed. They were a crowd gathered to hear the Way. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Not only His words but He Himself is the Way to God—the way to heaven. Whoever hears the Way and believes in Him discovers the truth and enjoys eternal life. This one and only Way given to us today is the Word of God. The words Jesus spoke—the Word of God—are the way, the truth, and the life. When we hear and encounter this Way of Life, the sick are healed, the oppressed are set free, the captive gains liberty, and a person is made new. The Bible we possess is the Word of God—the Way. This living Word still comes to us today. If we simply follow this Way, draw near to Him, and listen, our eyes, ears, and mouths are opened, and new life begins. This Way of Life is not something we obtain by our own cultivation. When we come before Him, He meets us just as He met the paralytic, and He makes us His own, granting us eternal life.

약속의 증거 The Sign of the Covenant 내가 잘 아는 워싱턴 주립대학교수 장로는 한참 활동하는 기운데 간암으로 임박한 죽음의 진단을 받았다. 그는 왜 나에게?라며 하나님께 항소의 기도를 하며 산으로 올라갔다. 그가 낫게 된다는 말씀을 받고 내려와 그는 그 약속을 증거로 갖기 위하여 코수염을 기르고 거울 앞에 설 때마다 하나님의 약속을 기억하고 감사하였다. 그는 건강하여 예수 각성 운동을 일으키며 전도자로 살았다. 약속을 확실하게 하고자 사람들은 손가락을 서로 마주 접기도 하지만 사람도 하나님도 잊을 때가 있다. 노아 시대 사람들이 너무 악하여 더 이상 용납할 수가 없었지만 노아 가족은 하나님 앞에 온전하였다. 하나님은 노와의 8식구만 남기고자 방주를 짓게 하고 40일간 비를 내려 땅에 있는 모든 생물을 멸하였다. 홍수 후 노아의 가족이라고 완전한 것이 아니다. 노아는 포도 농사를 잘 지어 술을 마시고 취하여 벗은 몸으로 눕고 한 아들이 그를 보고 알린 것으로 그는 대대로로 저주를 받고 새로운 갈등과 고통이 시작되었다. 다시 이들을 멸하시면 세상에 남을 자가 누구이겠나? 하나님은 다시는 땅의 생명 전체를 멸하지 않겠다고 약속을 하며 그 약속의 증거로 무지개를 나타나게 하셨다. 무지개가 나타나면 홍수로 땅을 심판하지 않는다는 하나님의 약속을 기억하게 된다. 그렇다면 사람들의 죄악과 잘못은 어떻게 하나? 하나님은 제사장을 세워 이들을 위하여 어린양 생명으로 대속하게 하고 선지자를 세워 사람들이 죄를 범하지 않도록 깨우치고 가르치고 했지만 이 제도는 일시적인 것이지 영구한 도움은 되지 않는다. 결국 하나님은 영원한 제사장이요 선지자를 겸한 아들 예수를 보내어 하나님 나라를 선포하여 사람들로 하나님께 돌아오게 하고 제사장으로 스스로 하나님의 어린양이 되어 사람이면서 죄가 없는 완전한 제물이 되어 모든 사람의 죄를 대신 담당하였다. 이는 순수한 하나님의 사랑의 표시이시지만 이를 알고 믿을 수 있는 증거는 그가 달려 돌아가신 십자가다. 십자가는 로마 시대 극악한 죄수의 처형도구이지만 예수님 이후에는 기독교의 상징이 되고 십자가는 하나님의 사랑과 예수님의 대속 죽음을 증거하는 것이 되었다. 십자가는 성도의 사랑을 받으며 십자가는 주의 사랑과 은혜를 증거한다. 성도는 십자가를 바라보며 자신의 죄와 잘못을 회개하고 주의 사랑을 확인하며 주를 더욱 사랑하며 감사와 찬양을 드린다. 죄인이지만 그를 심판하여 멸하지 않고 아들로 대속하여 생명 얻어 살게 하시니 이보다 더 큰 사랑과 은혜가 있겠나? 주의 은혜를 감사하며 그 사랑을 전하고 나누어 죽음으로 향하던 사람을 생명으로 돌아서게 하는 것이 성도의 특권임을 자각하며 십자가 아래서 십자가를 향하여 십자가의 영광을 찬양하는 것이 큰 축복이라 믿는다. The Sign of the Covenant An elder I know well, a professor at a state university in Washington, was at the height of his active life when he was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. Crying out, “Why me?” he went up into the mountains, appealing to God in prayer. There he received a word that he would be healed. When he came down, he decided to keep a mustache as a sign of that promise. Each time he stood before the mirror, he remembered God’s promise and gave thanks. Restored to health, he later lived as an evangelist, helping to spark a movement of spiritual awakening in Jesus. To confirm a promise, people sometimes hook their little fingers together. Yet both people—and even in a sense, God—may forget. In the days of Noah, humanity became so wicked that it could no longer be tolerated. However, Noah’s family was righteous before God. God instructed Noah to build an ark, preserving only his family of eight, and sent rain for forty days, destroying every living thing on the earth. After the flood, however, Noah’s family was not perfect. Noah cultivated a vineyard, drank wine, and became drunk, lying uncovered in his tent. One of his sons saw him and told the others, and as a result, a curse was pronounced that brought new conflict and suffering through the generations. If God were to destroy them again, who would remain on the earth? So God promised never again to destroy all life on the earth by a flood and set the rainbow as the sign of that covenant. Whenever the rainbow appears, it reminds us of God’s promise not to judge the earth with a flood again. But what about human sin and wrongdoing? God appointed priests to make atonement through the life of sacrificial lambs and sent prophets to warn and teach the people not to sin. Yet this system was temporary and could not provide a lasting solution. Ultimately, God sent His Son, Jesus—who is both the eternal High Priest and Prophet—to proclaim the kingdom of God and call people back to Him. As the priest, He became the Lamb of God Himself, a perfect sacrifice without sin, though fully human, bearing the sins of all people in their place. This was the pure expression of God’s love. The evidence by which we can know and believe this love is the cross on which He died. In the Roman era, the cross was a cruel instrument of execution for the worst criminals. But after Jesus, it became the symbol of Christianity. The cross testifies to God’s love and to Jesus’ atoning death. It is cherished by believers as the sign of the Lord’s love and grace. As believers look to the cross, they repent of their sins and failures, confirm the Lord’s love, and respond with deeper love, thanksgiving, and praise. Though sinners deserving judgment, we were not destroyed; instead, God gave His Son as our substitute so that we might receive life. What greater love and grace could there be? Giving thanks for the Lord’s grace, sharing and proclaiming His love, and turning those who were headed toward death back to life—this is the privilege of the saints. Standing beneath the cross, looking toward the cross, and praising the glory of the cross is, I believe, a great blessing.

조화와 건강한 삶 Life of Harmony and Health 우리가 건강을 지키기 위해서는 지켜야 할 기본적인 것이 있다. 적절한 음식 충분한 수면 기본적인 운동 이웃과의 교류 등은 필수적인 것이다. 혼자가 아니라 함께 사는 사회에서 모두가 조화를 가지고 건강하게 살기 위하여는 무엇이 필요할까? 나라의 법을 지키는 것이지만 무엇보다 내게 삶을 허락하고 다스리는 하나님을 인정하고 나아가 함께 살게 되어 있는 이웃을 인정하는 두 가지다. 하나님의 경우 사람들은 자기가 좋은 대로 금은목석으로 원하는 신상을 만들고 그것이 자기를 축복하리라 믿는다. 여호와 하나님은 스스로 계시는 분으로 천지만물을 창조하고 사람의 생명을 허락하고 주장하는 살아 계신 분으로 그는 오직 한분이다. 다른 모든 신은 사람이 만들어 낸 우상이다. 하나님을 인정하고 소중하게 받들며 그와 아름다운 관계를 맺는 것이 평안과 건강의 길이다. 그리고 함께 사는 이웃과 바른 관계를 맺는 일이다. 평안과 안전을 위하여 세상의 많은 법조문이 있지만 가장 기본적인 것은 하나님이 주신 십계명이다. 트럼프 대통령 집권이 시작되며 어떤 주의 학교에는 십계명을 게시하고 있다. 청교도 정신으로 시행하던 것이었으나 케네디 대통령이 이를 제거하였다가 다시 돌아오는 것이다. 많은 이민자가 모인 나라이기에 기독교 정신을 고집할 수가 없다고 하는 자들이 많이 있지만 우리를 포함하여 많은 나라의 다양한 다른 사람들이 이 나라를 좋아하고 살고 싶어하는 것은 인종간의 조화를 이루고 각자가 건강하게 자기 뜻을 펼 수 있다는 생각이다. 많은 법조문의 힘이 아니라 하나님께서 사람의 조화와 건강한 삶을 위하여 모세를 통하여 주신 십계명 덕분이다. 이것이 미국을 미국 되게 한 것이기에 누구든지 이것을 따르면 미국의 정신에 동참하게 되다. 십계명은 그것을 어기면 어떤 형벌이 있다는 것이 아니라 개인과 사회의 조화와 건강을 위한 것으로 두 가지 관계 형성을 말한다. 하나님과의 관계, 사람과의 관계다. 십계명의 처음 넷은 하나님과의 관계를 말한다. 하나님은 유일하신 하나님이기에 그분 만을 인정하고 눈에 보이는 어떤 신상을 만들지 말라는 것이다. 그러면서 하나님의 이름을 내마음대로 나를 위하여 남용할 것이 아니라 그를 높이 인정하고 경외할 것이다. 매일이 그럴 거이지만 일주일에 하루는 하던 일을 쉬고 하나님과 깊은 친밀한 관계를 맺자는 것이다. 집을 떠나 자기 일에 분주하게 살던 자식이 부모를 찾는 것이 기쁨이지만 만복의 근원 하나님을 대면하고 만나는 것보다 둘에게 더 큰 기쁨이 있을까! 다음은 사람과의 관계다. 위로는 하나님이지만 땅에서는 나를 낳고 기르시는 부모님이다. 부모를 공경하고 존중하는 것이 사람의 첫째 일이다. 그리고 전반적으로 대인관계에서 욕하거나 미운 마음은 살인과 같고 서로 간에 발전하는 음욕, 남의 소유를 인정하지 않고 훔치는 도둑질, 이웃을 해하려는 거짓, 탐심 등이 조화를 깨뜨리기에 이를 막아야 한다. 예수께서 이를 종합하여 네 하나님을 사랑하되 마음과 뜻과 힘을 다하고 이웃을 사랑하되 자기 자신처럼 돌보라고 하신다. 이런 사회가 된다면 무엇을 걱정할 것이 있을까! 많은 법 중의 하나인 교통법은 안전한 운행을 위한 것이지만 법을 지키지 않는다면 사고와 상해 죽음이 오고 벌금이다 형벌을 받기에 이를 피하려면 법을 지키려 한다. 다양한 인종이 함께 살면서 저마다 자기 기준이 아니라 이 나라의 법을 지키며 평안과 자유를 가지지만 가장 기본적인 십계명의 정신을 따라 산다면 사회는 더욱 조화와 건강을 이루고 하나님의 축복을 누리게 될 것이다. 우리가 동경하여 찾아온 이 나라의 기본인 십계명 정신을 유지하고 지속하며 세계를 향하여 산 위의 불 켜진 동네의 사명을 다하는 일에 함께 동참하는 것이 큰 특권이요 기쁨이다. Life of Harmony and Health There are basic principles we must keep in order to maintain our health: proper nutrition, sufficient sleep, regular exercise, and fellowship with our neighbors. These are essential. In a society where we live not alone but together, what is needed for everyone to live in harmony and health? We must obey the laws of the land. Yet above all, two things are essential: acknowledging God, who grants and governs our lives, and recognizing our neighbors with whom we are meant to live together. Regarding God, people often create idols of gold, silver, wood, or stone according to their own preferences and believe that these images will bless them. But the LORD God is self-existent. He created heaven and earth, grants human life, and rules over it. He alone is the living God. All other gods are idols made by human hands. Acknowledging God, honoring Him as precious, and forming a beautiful relationship with Him is the way to peace and health. Likewise, building right relationships with our neighbors is essential. Though there are many laws in the world for peace and security, the most fundamental are the Ten Commandments given by God. As President Trump began his term, some schools in certain states have posted the Ten Commandments. What had once been practiced under the spirit of the Puritans was removed during President Kennedy’s time, and now it is returning. Because this nation is made up of many immigrants, some argue that it cannot insist on a Christian spirit. Yet people from many different nations, including ourselves, love this country and desire to live here because they believe it fosters harmony among races and allows each person to pursue their aspirations in health and freedom. It is not merely the power of numerous laws, but the Ten Commandments given by God through Moses for human harmony and healthy living that have shaped this nation. This is what has made America what it is. Whoever follows these principles participates in the spirit of America. The Ten Commandments are not merely a list of punishments for disobedience. Rather, they are given for the harmony and health of individuals and society, focusing on two relationships: our relationship with God and our relationship with people. The first four commandments concern our relationship with God. Since God is the one and only God, we are to acknowledge Him alone and not make visible idols. We are not to misuse His name for our own purposes, but to honor and revere Him. Though every day belongs to Him, one day each week is set aside to rest from our work and cultivate a deep and intimate relationship with God. It brings joy when a busy child returns home to visit his parents; how much greater joy it must be to meet and commune with God, the source of all blessings. The remaining commandments concern our relationships with others. In heaven above is God, but on earth are our parents who gave us birth and raised us. Honoring and respecting our parents is a person’s first duty. More broadly, in human relationships, hatred and insults are akin to murder; growing lust, stealing what belongs to others, bearing false witness to harm a neighbor, and coveting all destroy harmony and therefore must be restrained. Jesus summarized these teachings by saying: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. If society were like this, what would there be to worry about? Among many laws, traffic laws exist for safe travel. If we ignore them, accidents, injuries, death, fines, and punishment follow; thus we seek to obey them. As people of many races live together, they enjoy peace and freedom not by following their own standards but by observing the laws of this country. If, in addition, we live according to the foundational spirit of the Ten Commandments, society will achieve even greater harmony and health and will enjoy God’s blessing. It is a great privilege and joy to preserve and continue the spirit of the Ten Commandments—the very foundation of the country we longed for and came to—and to participate together in fulfilling its mission as a shining city on a hill to the world.

주의 길을 예비 Prepare the Way for the Lord 이승만 대통령 시절 그가 민정 시찰을 가면 그 지역은 길을 수축하고 길 가에 나무를 심어 그를 편안하게 맞을 준비를 하였다. 박정희 대통령이 가난한 시절 차관을 얻어 경부고속도로를 만들었다. 길에 들어 누워 반대하는 자가 있었지만 나라의 근대화를 내다보고 서울과 부산을 네 시간 거리로 단축하는 길을 열었다. 사람이나 시대를 맞고자 길을 준비한 것이다. 요한은 예수님보다 6개월 먼저 태어난 자로 자기는 주의 오시는 길을 준비하는 사명을 가졌다고 한다. 그는 낙타 털 옷을 입고 메뚜기와 석청을 먹으며 거칠고 험한 광야에서 살았으나 새 시대를 꿈꾸는 많은 사람이 그에게 기대를 걸고 모였다. 그는 하나님 나라가 가까이 온 것을 선포하고 회개하라 외치며 세례를 베풀었다. 그가 특별하기에 바리새인들은 그가 하나님의 약속하신 그리스도인가 알고자 제사장과 레위인을 보내어 그가 누구인지 묻자 요한은 그리스도 도 아니요 엘리야도 아니요 기대하는 선지자가 아니라 한다. 그러면 누구인가? 자기 뒤에 오는 분의 길을 준비하는 광야의 소리라 한다. 높은 곳을 낮추고 낮은 곳을 돋우며 길을 평탄하게 한다고 하는 것은 사람의 마음이기에 그는 회개를 촉구한다. 마음을 갈아 엎는다. 실망과 좌절, 미움과 원한, 교만과 비천, 누구나 마음을 갈아 엎고 평평한 길을 만들며 세례를 베풀고 사람들로 소망을 가지고 새로운 삶을 살도록 주를 맞을 준비를 한다. 그는 자기 뒤에 오는 분을 자기보다 앞선 자라 자기는 그의 신발끈을 풀 수도 없는 자로서 오직 그가 오는 길을 준비하는 것 뿐이라 한다. 예수께서 그를 인정하고 그에게 세례를 받자 하늘이 열리고 성령이 비둘기같이 그에게 임하며 이는 내 사랑하는 아들이요 내 기뻐하는 자라는 음성이 들린다. 요한은 예수께서 어떤 분인가를 소개하였다. 요한은 사람들의 마음을 준비시키고 그들에게 예수는 하나님이 사랑하는 아들이요 기뻐하는 자라고 알렸다. 그는 광야의 소리라 주를 소개하고는 사라졌다. 요한이 길을 준비하고 예수님은 그 길로 오셔서 요한이 소개한 이상으로 그가 하나님의 아들이요 전능자로 모든 일을 하셨다. 또한 그는 하나님의 어린양으로 자기 백성을 대신하여 피를 흘려 죽으시고 부활하여 메시아이심을 증명하고 누구든지 그를 믿는 자는 멸망하지 않고 영생 얻는 길을 열어 주셨다. 그가 곧 길이요 생명이시다. 요한의 소개를 받고 예수님을 따른 사람은 스스로 그가 하나님의 아들이요 구주임을 확인하고 구원과 생명을 얻게 된 것을 감사한다. 이제 그는 오늘의 요한이 되어 주의 오실 길을 준비하게 된다. 목사 전도사 선교사만 아니라 누군가 준비해 준 길을 따라 주를 만난 사람이면 이제 그도 주를 위하여 길을 준비하는 사람이 되어 예수님이 어떤 분이며 무슨 일을 하셨는지 알리고 전할 것이다. 이 길을 따라 주를 만나고 믿게 되면 그도 또한 주께로 가는 길, 주께서 오시는 길을 준비할 것이다. 사람들의 마음을 부드럽게 하고 무엇인가를 기다리는 그들에게 생명의 주님깨로 나아가는 길을 만들고 그들과 주님을 연결시키는 경부고속도로 역할을 할 것이다. 주님을 만나기만 하면 천하보다 귀한 생명과 평안을 얻고 그도 또한 주의 길을 만드는 자가 될 것이고 주를 향한 길은 사통팔달 어디에나 열릴 것이라 온 세상이 구원과 생명을 얻게 될 것이다. 그날을 바라보며 요한처럼 달려가는 것이 바로 오늘 우리 삶의 사명이요 특권이리라. Prepare the Way for the Lord During the presidency of Syngman Rhee, whenever he went on a civil inspection tour, the region would repair the roads and plant trees along the way to prepare a comfortable welcome for him. In the days of hardship under President Park Chung-hee, foreign loans were obtained to build the Gyeongbu Expressway. Some even lay down on the road in protest, but with a vision for national modernization, a highway was opened that reduced the distance between Seoul and Busan to four hours. Roads were prepared to welcome a person or a new era. John was born six months before Jesus and said that he had been given the mission to prepare the way for the Lord who was coming. He wore clothing made of camel’s hair, ate locusts and wild honey, and lived in the rough and barren wilderness. Yet many who longed for a new age gathered around him with great expectation. He proclaimed that the kingdom of God was near, cried out for repentance, and baptized the people. Because he was so extraordinary, the Pharisees sent priests and Levites to ask whether he was the Christ whom God had promised. John answered that he was neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet they were expecting. Then who was he? He said that he was “the voice of one calling in the wilderness,” preparing the way for the One who would come after him. To make the high places low and raise the low places, to make the road straight and smooth—this referred to the human heart. Therefore, he urged repentance. He called people to plow up their hearts—overturning disappointment and despair, hatred and resentment, pride and humiliation. Everyone was to level the road of the heart, receive baptism, and prepare to welcome the Lord with hope and a new life. John said that the One coming after him was actually before him, and that he himself was not worthy even to untie His sandals. His only role was to prepare the way. When Jesus acknowledged John and was baptized by him, heaven opened, and the Spirit descended like a dove upon Him. A voice was heard saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” John introduced who Jesus was. He prepared people’s hearts and testified that Jesus is God’s beloved Son and the One in whom He delights. He was a voice in the wilderness; having introduced the Lord, he faded from the scene. John prepared the way, and Jesus came along that way and accomplished far more than John had introduced. He revealed Himself as the Son of God and the Almighty through His works. As the Lamb of God, He shed His blood in place of His people, died, and rose again, proving that He is the Messiah. He opened the way of eternal life so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. He Himself is the way and the life. Those who followed Jesus through John’s introduction personally confirmed that He is the Son of God and the Savior, and they gave thanks for the salvation and life they received. Now they become “today’s John,” preparing the way for the Lord’s coming. Not only pastors, evangelists, and missionaries, but anyone who has met the Lord by walking the path prepared by someone else is now called to prepare the way for Him—proclaiming who Jesus is and what He has done. When others meet and believe in the Lord along this path, they too will prepare the way to the Lord and the way for the Lord to come. They will soften hearts and, for those who are waiting for something more, create a highway leading to the Lord of life—like a spiritual Gyeongbu Expressway connecting people to Him. Once a person meets the Lord, they receive a life and peace more precious than the whole world. They in turn become builders of the Lord’s way, and the road toward Him will open in all directions. The whole world will come to receive salvation and life.

외모와 실상 Appearance and Reality 손홍민은 지금 세계 축구의 신화로 나타났다. 키가 작고 별 모양 없는 아시아인으로 18세에 독일에서 시작하여 영국에서 10년을 보내고 미국으로 건너와 LAFC로 이적하여 새로운 삶을 시작하며 그의 속도 정확성 등 축구 실력은 말할 것도 없이 팀웍, 축구 집념, 동료를 살피는 마음, 겸손과 진정성 같은 그의 인품이 세계를 놀라게 한다. 지난 2월21일 MLS개막경기에서 그가 인터마이애미팀의 귀재 메시와 대결하는 것을 보고자 열광하는 인파로 17천석 구장에서 75천석 장소로 옮겼으나 표가 매진될 뿐 아니라 수십배의 가격으로 암표가 거래되었다. 그에게 보통 선수가 보이는 것과는 달리 보여주는 것이 있다. 이사야가 말하는 메시아가 그러하다. 그는 볼 모양이 없다. 그는 연한 순 같고 마른 땅에 나온 뿌리 같아 아무런 풍채가 없다. 그는 사람들이 고개를 돌리고 멸시하는 존재다. 그가 질고와 고난을 겪자 그는 하나님의 징계를 받는 것으로 사람들은 생각하며 아무도 그를 귀하게 생각하지 않는다. 그러나 하나님은 그를 통한 다른 계획이 있었다. 그는 일반 사람 이하의 모습으로 자라며 친히 그들의 고난과 고통을 겪으며 그들을 깊이 알고 이제 그들을 대신하여 모든 아픔을 담당하는 것이다. 그가 찔림은 우리의 허물을 인함이오 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악을 인함이라 그가 징계를 받음으로 우리가 평화를 누리고 그가 채찍에 맞음으로 우리가 나음을 얻게 되었다. 우리는 다 양과 같아 각기 제 길로 가지만 하나님께서는 우리의 죄를 그에게 담당시켰다고 이사야는 일찍 알려 준다. 이 말씀은 예수님에게 그대로 이루어지고 그가 우리의 구주 메시아임을 확인하신다. 지금도 여호와의 구원의 팔이 나타나지만 그것을 믿는 자는 많지 않아 한탄스럽고 불쌍하다. 하나님은 모든 사람이 구원받기를 원하시기에 자기 아들을 희생하기까지 우리를 사랑하신다. 그 사랑을 받아 예수를 주로 믿고 구원 영생을 얻은 사람은 그 사랑을 다른 사람에게 나누고 전하는 사명을 가진다. 누군가 전하는 것을 듣고 내가 주를 믿은 것처럼 나의 전함으로 누군가 믿고 구원 얻기를 기다리고 있는 것을 생각하면 마음이 뜨거워지지 않는가! 복음서는 예수님의 공적인 사역 기록이라 처음 30년의 삶은 가려져 있다 나사렛 시골 처녀가 여행 중 방을 얻지 못하여 말구유에서 분만하고 곧 피난을 떠나야 하고 비천한 시골에 돌아가 목수의 아들로 지나는 것은 누구에게나 귀하게 보이지 않는 일이나 이는 오직 나타난 외모다. 그의 실상은 성령으로 잉태하고 만인을 죄에서 구원할 하나님의 아들이라는 것을 천사가 이혼을 생각하는 약혼자 요셉에게 알려주었다. 그는 가난한 자들에게 복음을 전하고 눈 먼 자를 보게 하고 병든 자를 고치며 옥에 갇혀 있듯 억압 받고 고통 당하는 자에게 자유를 주며 희년 곧 하나님 은혜의 해를 선포하러 오셨다. 그는 죄에서의 자유와 영생을 위하여 스스로 자기 생명을 주러 왔다고 하며 최악의 범법자 처형 도구 십자가에 달려 자기 생명을 바치고 죽어 장사되었다가 3일에 부활하여 우리의 영원한 구주가 되시고 그를 믿는 자에게 멸망이 아니라 영원한 생명을 주신다. 이제 우리에게 주어진 사명은 우리가 받고 믿는 예수님과 그의 복음을 가능한 많은 자에게 전하여 주께서 시작하신 생명 운동을 전개하는 것이다. 주를 믿고 전하는 자들이 외면을 당하는 경우가 많지만 실상은 하나님의 생명이 솟아나는 샘물과 같은 것을 감사하며 주를 찬양한다. Though he is of smaller stature and an Asian without a striking physical presence, he began his career in Germany at the age of eighteen, spent ten years in England, and then moved to the United States, transferring to LAFC to begin a new chapter of life. Beyond his remarkable speed and accuracy, his teamwork, dedication to the game, consideration for his teammates, humility, and sincerity have astonished the world. On February 21, at the MLS season opener, crowds were so eager to watch him face the genius Messi of Inter Miami that the game was moved from a 17,000-seat stadium to a 75,000-seat venue. He was despised, and people turned their faces away from Him. When He suffered illness and affliction, people considered Him stricken by God and afflicted, and no one esteemed Him. Yet God had a different plan through Him. He grew up in a form lower than that of ordinary people, personally experiencing their suffering and pain, knowing them deeply, and ultimately bearing all their sorrows on their behalf. He was pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us turning to our own way, but the Lord laid on Him the iniquity of us all, as Isaiah foretold long ago. These words were fulfilled in Jesus, confirming that He is our Savior and Messiah. Even now, the saving arm of the Lord is revealed, yet it is lamentable and tragic that not many believe. God desires all people to be saved and loved us to the extent of sacrificing His own Son. Those who receive that love, believe in Jesus as Lord, and obtain salvation and eternal life are entrusted with the mission of sharing and proclaiming that love to others. When we remember that just as we came to believe by hearing someone proclaim the Lord, there are others waiting to believe and be saved through our witness, does not our heart burn within us? The Gospels record Jesus’ public ministry, but the first thirty years of His life remain largely hidden. A young woman from the rural town of Nazareth gave birth in a manger because she could find no room while traveling, and soon had to flee as a refugee. Returning to a humble village and living as the carpenter’s son did not appear honorable in the eyes of others. Yet that was only His outward appearance. His true reality was that He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and was the Son of God who would save all people from their sins. An angel revealed this to Joseph, His betrothed, who had considered divorcing her. He came to preach good news to the poor, give sight to the blind, heal the sick, and proclaim freedom to those oppressed and suffering as if imprisoned. He proclaimed the year of the Lord’s favor—the Jubilee of God’s grace. He said that He came to give His life for the freedom from sin and for eternal life. He was nailed to the cross, the instrument of execution for the worst criminals, where He gave His life, died, and was buried. On the third day He rose again, becoming our eternal Savior, granting not destruction but everlasting life to those who believe in Him. Now the mission given to us is to proclaim Jesus and His gospel—the One we have received and believed—to as many people as possible, carrying forward the movement of life that the Lord began. Though those who believe and proclaim Him are often rejected outwardly, in reality they are like a spring from which the life of God flows. With gratitude for this truth, we praise the Lord.

하나님의 안식 Sabbath (Rest) of God 하나님께서 6일간 천지 장조를 마치시고 제 7일에 안식하시며 우리 사람에게도 6일간 열심히 일하고 제 7일에는 안식하라고 말씀하신다. 하나님이 쉬신다는 것은 그가 6일간 창조의 일을 하셨기에 피곤하여 쉰다는 것인가? 무한하신 하나님은 피곤하거나 고단치 않으시다고 이사야는 말한다. 예수께서는 내 아버지께서 이제까지 일하시기에 나도 일한다고 하셨다. 계속하여 일하시는 하나님이 안식하신다는 것은 그가 하신 일을 끝내다 그치다 하는 말이다. 하나님의 창조는 아무 것도 없는 데서 모든 것을 있게 하심이다. 무에서 모든 생명과 존재의 창조를 완성하고 보니 그것이 보기에 좋다며 만족스러워 하심이다. 이것이 바로 안식이다. 안식은 완성과 즐김이 함께 하는 말이다. 특히 마지막으로 사람을 만든 후에는 보기에 참으로 좋다고 하신 것은 그의 안식이시다. 모세가 하나님의 성막과 모든 기구를 만들게 하고 그것을 보니 하나님의 말씀대로 되었기에 기뻐하였다는 (출39장) 것과 같다. 일을 완성하신 하나님이 지금까지 일하신다는 것은 무슨 말인가? 창조한 것이 작동하도록 관리하고 살피심이다. 만물이 창조 목적을 따라 가도록 유지 섭리하고 다스리고 생명 탄생과 변화로 새롭게 하시기에 이를 “계속적 창조”라 한다. 여기 창조는 무에서의 창조가 아니라 이미 있는 것을 조화롭게 작동하는 것이며 이를 기뻐하고 만족하는 것이 안식이다. 사람이 활동할 때만 아니라 잠을 잘 때도 하나님은 졸지도 않고 주무시지도 않고 살피고 즐기시는 것이 그의 안식이다. 하나님은 6일동안 천지창조를 완성하셨지만 계속하여 유지 관리 새롭게 하시며 피조물과 관계를 맺고 활동하신다. 하나님의 안식은 본을 보여주시며 사람에게6일은 힘써 일하고 제 7일은 쉬라고 하신다. 광야생활을 위하여 만나를 주실 때 제 7일에는 주시지 않고 제 6일에 일용할 것의 배를 주시고 하루를 쉬게 하신다. 하나님의 안식은 그가 창조한 사람과 사랑을 나누는 시간이다. 아버지가 가족을 위하여 일하고 수고하지만 가족이 그에 감사하고 인정하면 피곤을 잊고 기쁨과 안식을 가지듯 사람이 하나님을 인정하고 그를 예배하는 것이 하나님과 사람 모두에게 안식이다. 안식은 사람에게 필요한 것이다. 하나님과 달리 사람은 피곤하고 지치기에 6일간 일하고 하루를 안식하라 하신다. 사람은 하나님의 형상으로 창조되었으나 흙으로 되었기에 많은 한계가 있고 태어나서 자라고 죽음으로 향하며 낮에는 일을 하지만 밤에는 쉬게 하셨지만 일주일에 하루를 쉬도록 구조하셨다. 그 날에는 지난 6일간의 일을 돌아보며 감사라고 즐기지만 나의 생명과 삶을 섭리하고 인도하시는 하나님을 기억하고 경배하며 그와 친밀한 관계를 맺어 기쁨을 가지게 하신다. 하던 일을 멈추고 쉬면서 몸은 새롭게 회복되지만 우리 마음과 영혼은 그러지 못하다. 하나님의 뜻을 벗어난 마음과 삶의 죄로 인한 심판과 죽음이 두려움이다. 하나님은 이를 해결하려고 아들을 보내시고 그가 우리 죄의 값으로 죽고 부활심으로 우리의 모든 죄를 속량하셨다. ‘수고하고 무거운 짐진 자들은 다 내게로 오라 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라’ 예수께서 초청하신다. 그는 우리가 풀지 못하는 무거운 짐을 대신 지고 우리에게 안식하게 하셨기에 그의 사랑을 입은 자들은 항상 그에게 감사하고 찬양하며 범죄 이전 에덴의 온전한 안식을 경험한다. 제 7일 육체가 쉬며 영혼의 안식을 누리고 주일에 함께 모여 감사하고 예배한다. 동시에 우리는 하나님께서 마지막에 준비해 두신 천국의 영원한 안식을 맛보며 주 앞에서 영원토록 기뻐할 것이다. Sabbath (Rest) of God After completing the creation of the heavens and the earth in six days, God rested on the seventh day and told us also to work diligently for six days and rest on the seventh. Does God’s resting mean that He was tired from six days of creation? The prophet Isaiah says that the infinite God neither grows weary nor faint. Jesus said, “My Father is always at His work to this very day, and I too am working.” When we say that God rested though He continues to work, it means that He finished and brought to completion the work He had done. God’s creation means bringing everything into existence out of nothing. After completing the creation of all life and existence from nothing, He saw that it was good and was satisfied. This is rest. Rest includes both completion and enjoyment. Especially after creating mankind last, He said it was very good—this was His rest. It is like when Moses made the tabernacle and all its furnishings and, seeing that everything had been done according to God’s word, rejoiced (Exodus 39). What does it mean, then, that the God who finished His work still works until now? It means that He governs, sustains, and cares for what He created so that it functions properly. He preserves, provides for, and rules all things so that they move according to their created purpose. Through the birth of life and ongoing change, He continually renews creation—this is called “continuous creation.” Here, creation does not mean creating out of nothing again, but harmoniously sustaining and guiding what already exists. Rejoicing in and being satisfied with this is His rest. Whether we are active or asleep, God neither slumbers nor sleeps; He watches over and delights in His creation—this is His rest. Though He completed creation in six days, He continues to sustain, manage, renew, and relate to His creatures. God’s rest sets an example for us: we are to work diligently for six days and rest on the seventh. When He provided manna for Israel in the wilderness, He did not give it on the seventh day but gave a double portion on the sixth so that they might rest. God’s rest is also the time when He shares love with the people He created. Just as a father works hard for his family yet forgets his weariness and finds joy and rest when his family shows gratitude and appreciation, so it is when people acknowledge and worship God—this becomes rest for both God and humanity. Rest is necessary for human beings. Unlike God, we grow tired and weary; therefore, we are told to work six days and rest one day. Though created in God’s image, we are formed from dust and have many limitations. We are born, we grow, and we move toward death. We work during the day and sleep at night, yet we are structured to rest one day each week. On that day we look back on the past six days with gratitude and enjoyment, and we remember, worship, and draw near to the God who governs and guides our lives, finding joy in intimate fellowship with Him. When we stop our work and rest, our bodies are renewed, but our hearts and souls are not automatically restored. Because of sin—hearts and lives that have strayed from God’s will—there is fear of judgment and death. To resolve this, God sent His Son. Through His death as the price for our sins and His resurrection, He redeemed us from all our sins. Jesus invites us: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” He bore the heavy burdens we could not carry and gives us rest. Those who receive His love give thanks and praise to Him and experience the perfect rest of Eden before the fall. On the seventh day we rest physically, enjoy rest for our souls, and gather on the Lord’s Day to give thanks and worship. At the same time, we taste the eternal rest of heaven that God has prepared for the end, and we will rejoice before Him forever.

하나님이 이기지 못하신다 God Not Winning 아버지와 어린 아들이 씨름하며 노는 때가 있다. 아들이 아버지를 넘어뜨리고 아버지는 아들에게 네가 이겼다고 한다. 아버지가 힘이 없어서가 아니라 아들에게 자신감과 용기를 주기 위함이다. 능력으로 천지를 창조하고 다스리시는 하나님이 우리와의 씨름에서 이기지 못하는 때가 있다. 야곱이 형을 속여 장자권을 빼앗고 아버지의 축복을 받고는 외삼촌 집으로 가서 20년을 살며 결혼하여 11명의 자식을 낳고 많은 재산을 모았을 때 위협을 느끼면서 모두 함께 도주하였다. 얍복강을 만나 아내와 자녀 그리고 재산을 모두 건너게 하였다. 멀지 않는 곳에 형 에서가 원한을 품고 400명 군사를 이끌고 그를 기다린다. 진퇴양난 어려운 형편이라 야곱은 홀로 남아 기도한다. 어떤 사람이 나타나 그와 씨름하며 밤을 보내다가 새벽에 그는 가야 한다며 야곱에게 놓으라고 한다. 야곱은 끈질기게 붙잡고 축복하지 않으면 놓지 않겠다고 한다. 하나님이 이기지 못하여 그의 요구를 듣고 그의 이름ㅜ야곱을 이스라엘로 바꾸어 주었다. 발꿈치를 잡은 자가 하나님과 씨름에서 이겼다는 이름으로 자신이 하나님인 것을 알렸다. 사람을 이기고 하나님을 이겼다는 것보다 큰 축복이 있을까? 하나님이 이기지 못하여 야곱을 축복하였다. 힘이 없어서가 아니라 그를 사랑하기 때문이었다 우리의 하나님과의 씨름은 바로 기도다. 철야기도 새벽기도 금식기도 산상기도가 얼마나 많았던가. 가난하고 죽음 같은 형편에서 오직 능력의 하나님만 붙들고 놓지 않는 야곱의 씨름이었다. 하나님은 개인만 아니라 교회와 나라가 오늘처럼 번창하게 축복하셨다. 개인적으로 받은 복을 다 헤아릴 수 있을까! 하나님을 붙잡고 씨름하는 우리의 간절한 기도에서 하나님은 이기지 못하듯 축복하여 주신다. 우리를 아들로 사랑하시는 표시다. 역사에 이스라엘처럼 고난을 겪은 민족도 드물다. 2천년간 사라졌던 나라가 1948년 이름을 회복시켜 주시고 하나님이 아브라함에게 주신 땅에 그의 백성이 모여들었다. 거기 살던 사람들과 주변 나라 5억에 둘러싸여 생존의 위협을 당하지만 이들은 하나님과 사람을 이겼다는 이스라엘, 하나님의 축복으로 든든히 서리라. 신실하신 하나님은 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 영적인 이스라엘이 된 성도에게도 같은 복을 그대로 적용하심을 보며 감사하고 찬양한다. God Not Winning There are times when a father wrestles playfully with his young son. The son throws his father down, and the father tells him, “You won.” It is not because the father lacks strength, but because he wants to give his son confidence and courage. There are times when God, who created and rules the heavens and the earth with His power, does not win in His wrestling with us. After Jacob deceived his brother and took the birthright and received his father’s blessing, he went to his uncle’s house. He lived there for twenty years, married, had eleven children, and accumulated great wealth. Feeling threatened, he fled with his entire household. When he reached the Jabbok River, he sent his wives, children, and possessions across. Not far away, his brother Esau, holding a grudge, was approaching with four hundred men. Trapped in a desperate situation, Jacob remained alone and prayed. A man appeared and wrestled with him through the night. At daybreak the man said he must go and told Jacob to let him go. But Jacob clung to him and said he would not let him go unless he blessed him. God did not prevail, and He granted Jacob’s request, changing his name from Jacob to Israel. The one who had grasped his brother’s heel was given a name meaning that he had wrestled with God and prevailed. What greater blessing could there be than to overcome both man and God? God blessed Jacob as though He had not won—not because He lacked power, but because He loved him. Our wrestling with God is prayer. How many all-night prayers, early morning prayers, fasting prayers, and mountain prayers have there been? Like Jacob, in poverty and in circumstances like death itself, we cling only to the almighty God and refuse to let go. God has blessed not only individuals but also churches and nations to flourish as they do today. Can we even count all the blessings we have personally received? In our earnest prayers, as we hold on to God and wrestle with Him, He blesses us as though He does not win. It is a sign that He loves us as His children. Few nations in history have suffered as much as Israel. A nation that disappeared for two thousand years was restored by name in 1948, and the people of God gathered again in the land He had given to Abraham. Though surrounded by hostile peoples and hundreds of millions in neighboring nations, facing threats to their survival, they stand firm as Israel—those who have wrestled with God and with men and prevailed—by God’s blessing. We give thanks and praise as we see that the faithful God applies the same blessing to believers who, through faith in Jesus Christ, have become spiritual Israel.
