하나님이 이기지 못하신다 God Not Winning 아버지와 어린 아들이 씨름하며 노는 때가 있다. 아들이 아버지를 넘어뜨리고 아버지는 아들에게 네가 이겼다고 한다. 아버지가 힘이 없어서가 아니라 아들에게 자신감과 용기를 주기 위함이다. 능력으로 천지를 창조하고 다스리시는 하나님이 우리와의 씨름에서 이기지 못하는 때가 있다. 야곱이 형을 속여 장자권을 빼앗고 아버지의 축복을 받고는 외삼촌 집으로 가서 20년을 살며 결혼하여 11명의 자식을 낳고 많은 재산을 모았을 때 위협을 느끼면서 모두 함께 도주하였다. 얍복강을 만나 아내와 자녀 그리고 재산을 모두 건너게 하였다. 멀지 않는 곳에 형 에서가 원한을 품고 400명 군사를 이끌고 그를 기다린다. 진퇴양난 어려운 형편이라 야곱은 홀로 남아 기도한다. 어떤 사람이 나타나 그와 씨름하며 밤을 보내다가 새벽에 그는 가야 한다며 야곱에게 놓으라고 한다. 야곱은 끈질기게 붙잡고 축복하지 않으면 놓지 않겠다고 한다. 하나님이 이기지 못하여 그의 요구를 듣고 그의 이름ㅜ야곱을 이스라엘로 바꾸어 주었다. 발꿈치를 잡은 자가 하나님과 씨름에서 이겼다는 이름으로 자신이 하나님인 것을 알렸다. 사람을 이기고 하나님을 이겼다는 것보다 큰 축복이 있을까? 하나님이 이기지 못하여 야곱을 축복하였다. 힘이 없어서가 아니라 그를 사랑하기 때문이었다 우리의 하나님과의 씨름은 바로 기도다. 철야기도 새벽기도 금식기도 산상기도가 얼마나 많았던가. 가난하고 죽음 같은 형편에서 오직 능력의 하나님만 붙들고 놓지 않는 야곱의 씨름이었다. 하나님은 개인만 아니라 교회와 나라가 오늘처럼 번창하게 축복하셨다. 개인적으로 받은 복을 다 헤아릴 수 있을까! 하나님을 붙잡고 씨름하는 우리의 간절한 기도에서 하나님은 이기지 못하듯 축복하여 주신다. 우리를 아들로 사랑하시는 표시다. 역사에 이스라엘처럼 고난을 겪은 민족도 드물다. 2천년간 사라졌던 나라가 1948년 이름을 회복시켜 주시고 하나님이 아브라함에게 주신 땅에 그의 백성이 모여들었다. 거기 살던 사람들과 주변 나라 5억에 둘러싸여 생존의 위협을 당하지만 이들은 하나님과 사람을 이겼다는 이스라엘, 하나님의 축복으로 든든히 서리라. 신실하신 하나님은 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 영적인 이스라엘이 된 성도에게도 같은 복을 그대로 적용하심을 보며 감사하고 찬양한다. God Not Winning There are times when a father wrestles playfully with his young son. The son throws his father down, and the father tells him, “You won.” It is not because the father lacks strength, but because he wants to give his son confidence and courage. There are times when God, who created and rules the heavens and the earth with His power, does not win in His wrestling with us. After Jacob deceived his brother and took the birthright and received his father’s blessing, he went to his uncle’s house. He lived there for twenty years, married, had eleven children, and accumulated great wealth. Feeling threatened, he fled with his entire household. When he reached the Jabbok River, he sent his wives, children, and possessions across. Not far away, his brother Esau, holding a grudge, was approaching with four hundred men. Trapped in a desperate situation, Jacob remained alone and prayed. A man appeared and wrestled with him through the night. At daybreak the man said he must go and told Jacob to let him go. But Jacob clung to him and said he would not let him go unless he blessed him. God did not prevail, and He granted Jacob’s request, changing his name from Jacob to Israel. The one who had grasped his brother’s heel was given a name meaning that he had wrestled with God and prevailed. What greater blessing could there be than to overcome both man and God? God blessed Jacob as though He had not won—not because He lacked power, but because He loved him. Our wrestling with God is prayer. How many all-night prayers, early morning prayers, fasting prayers, and mountain prayers have there been? Like Jacob, in poverty and in circumstances like death itself, we cling only to the almighty God and refuse to let go. God has blessed not only individuals but also churches and nations to flourish as they do today. Can we even count all the blessings we have personally received? In our earnest prayers, as we hold on to God and wrestle with Him, He blesses us as though He does not win. It is a sign that He loves us as His children. Few nations in history have suffered as much as Israel. A nation that disappeared for two thousand years was restored by name in 1948, and the people of God gathered again in the land He had given to Abraham. Though surrounded by hostile peoples and hundreds of millions in neighboring nations, facing threats to their survival, they stand firm as Israel—those who have wrestled with God and with men and prevailed—by God’s blessing. We give thanks and praise as we see that the faithful God applies the same blessing to believers who, through faith in Jesus Christ, have become spiritual Israel.

오늘 하루 One Day Today 내가 잘 아는 어느 목사는 근 40년 전에 또 어느 장로는 2년 전에 잠을 자다가 아침에 일어나지 못하고 세상을 떠나 가족과 친지에게 충격이었다. 이를 보면 내일은 내것이라 할 수 없고 생명은 허락 받은 선물로 살며 오늘이 내 삶의 마지막이 될지도 모른다는 생각을 한다. 야고보서에는 내일 이 일 저 일 할 것이라 계획하지만 하루에 무슨 일이 일어날지 모르는 안개와 같은 인생이라며 오늘 하루 동안에 하나님의 뜻이면 이 일 저 일을 할 것이라 한다. 오를 하루의 생명을 어떻게 살까? 생명이라면 살라는 명명이다. 너는 길가에 버려진 피투성이라도 살아라 하신다. 생육하고 번성하는 축복을 주시며 살라 하신다. 살기 위하여 먹고 움직이며 학업을 하고 결혼을 한다. 가난과 전쟁에 시달리며 수 많은 사람이 죽어가는데서 살아남고 또 의사는 3년을 살 것이라는 중병에 걸렸지만 3년의 10배를 살기도 한다. 생명은 나의 것이 아니라 주어진 선물로 주신 하나님께 달려 있다. 생명은 사명이다. 주어진 삶에는 맡겨진 일이 있다. 사업이나 직정, 교사. 의사 청소, 정치, 주부, 목사 장로 등은 주어진 일과 사명에 속한다. 할 일을 바로 알고 충성스럽게 수행할 것이다. 주인이 종들에게 달란트를 맡기며 장사하여 이익을 남기라 한다. 열심히 일을 하여 남긴 자들을 칭찬하고 큰 것을 맡기지만 달란트를 묻어둔 자는 책망을 받고 있는 것도 빼앗겼다. 받은 재능과 일을 최대한 활용하여야 한다. 주께서 말씀하신대로 가장 큰 것은 사람이 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하라 하신다. 나에게 생명과 재능을 주신 하나님을 인정하고 마음과 뜻 힘을 다하여 사랑하라 하신다. 나아가 누구나 자기를 위하고 사랑하듯이 다른 사람을 용납하고 사랑하며 어려운 자를 돕고 자선을 베풀며 생명을 존중하고 자유와 행복 평화를 추구하며 살 것이다. 미래에 대한 꿈을 가지는 것이 중요하지만 오늘 하루에 실현할 수 있는 삶이다. 언제 나의 오늘이 끝날지 모르지만 오늘이라 하는 동안에 힘써 살고 서로 인정하고 용납하는 사랑을 나누며 하나님 앞에서 하나님과 함께 기뼈하고 감사하며 살 것이다. , One Day Today A pastor I knew well passed away about 40 years ago, and an elder passed away two years ago. Both went to sleep at night and did not wake up in the morning, leaving their families and relatives in shock. Seeing this, I realize that tomorrow cannot be claimed as mine. Life is a permitted gift, and today may be the last day of my life. The Book of James says that although we make plans for tomorrow—saying we will do this or that—we do not know what will happen in a single day. Our life is like a mist. Instead, we ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” How, then, shall I live this one day of life? Life means we are commanded to live. Even if you are left bleeding by the roadside, you are told to live. God blesses us to be fruitful and multiply, and commands us to live. To live, we eat, move, study, and marry. While countless people suffer and die from poverty and war, some survive. Even a person diagnosed with a serious illness and given three years to live may live ten times longer. Life does not belong to me; it depends on God, who has given it as a gift. Life is also a calling. In the life given to us, there is entrusted work. Businesspeople, employees, teachers, doctors, cleaners, politicians, homemakers, pastors, elders—all belong to the work and calling given to them. We must know our task clearly and carry it out faithfully. A master entrusted his servants with talents and told them to trade and make a profit. Those who worked diligently and gained more were praised and entrusted with greater things, but the one who buried his talent was rebuked and even what he had was taken away. We must make the most of the gifts and responsibilities we have received. As the Lord said, the greatest commandment is to love God and to love our neighbor. We are to acknowledge God who has given us life and gifts, and love Him with all our heart, soul, and strength. And just as each person loves and cares for himself, we are to accept and love others, help those in need, practice charity, respect life, and pursue freedom, happiness, and peace. It is important to have dreams for the future, but life is something to be realized in this one day. We do not know when my “today” will end. But while it is still called today, I will strive to live diligently, sharing love that acknowledges and accepts one another, rejoicing and giving thanks before God and with God.

아버지와 아들 Father and Son

아버지와 아들 Father and Son 에티오피아 명성 의과대학 교수/교목으로 재직하여 방문한 의사 한 사람을 채플에 초대하였다. 그는 신앙 가정에서 자라며 아버지와 갈등이 생겼다. 학교에서85점을 받아오면 아버지의 매를ㅊ 맞는다. 다음은 90점을 받아도 그게 무엇인가 매를 맞는다. 다음은 95점으로 클래스 1등이 되었지만 아버지는 5점만 더 하면 만점이 될텐데 하며 꾸중을 한다. 아버지는 만족을 모르는 것 같았다. 그가 대학에서 성경공부를 하며 하나님이 아버지라는 사실을 알자 그는 그를 믿지 않겠다고 하나님을 떠났다. 마음대로 생활하며 의과대학을 졸업하고 외과의사가 되어 클리닉 일곱을 열고 분주하게 일하다 보니 하나 뿐이던 아들이 집을 나가고 부인도 떠났다. 인정 받는 의사로서 일을 한다고 가정을 등한시하여 아내와 아들과는 시간을 갖지 못한 것이다. 저녁마다 술을 마시고 집에 돌아오면 그를 맞아주는 것은 빈 집뿐이다. 어느 날 밤 술에 취한 그는 허탈감으로 방문을 열며 바닥에 쓰러졌다. 고독과 슬픔이 가득하고 삶의 의지가 무너지는 시간이다. 얼마가 지났는지 흐느끼는데 뒤에서 누군가 그를 포근하게 안아주는 것을 느끼며 그동안 가져보지 못한 마음의 안정이 온다. 그가 하나님이시라는 것을 즉각적으로 알았다. 그는 기뻐 눈물로 주를 영접하며 새 사람으로 태어났다. 하나님의 크신 사랑을 경험하며 그 사랑을 나누고 싶어 잘 나가던 클리닉을 모두 정리하고 아프리카의 의사 없는 지역으로 가서 헌신하는 선교사가 되어 가난하고 병든 이들에게 아버지의 사랑과 그리스도의 복음을 나누었다. 예레마야 선지자는 하나님이 이스라엘의 아버지요 이스라엘은 그의 장자라 하시는 말씀을 듣는다(렘31:9). 이스라엘은 하나님을 두러워하여 감히 아버지라 부르지 못하였지만 하나님 자신이 그들의 아버지요 그들은 그의 아들이라 하신다. 아버지는 자식을 낳았고 그들을 낳았기에 그들을 기르고 돌보며 책임지고 인도한다. 나의 아버지는 가난하던 그 시절 학교 교육을 제대로 받지 못하였으나 열심히 일을 하여 나를 양육하고 교육시키며 필요한 모든 것을 제공하셨다. 내가 죽을 병이 들었을 때에 땅을 팔아서라도 나를 장기 입원시키고 기도하며 나의 치유를 위하여 최선을 다 하셨다. 그 후 60년 이상 건강을 누리며 그를 생각하면 감사한 것 뿐이다. 일찍 유학하고 귀국하여 교수하는 것을 무척 기뻐하셨으나 다시 도미하였기에 부모님을 모시고 은혜를 갚지 못한 것이 아쉬울 뿐이다. 하나님은 전능하고 의로우신 분이지만 죄로 죽음에 처한 나를 구원하고 살리기 위하여 육신을 입고 땅에 오시고 우리 가운데 함께 하셨다. 가난한 자 병든 자 눌린 자 갇힌 자를 풀어주고 세상에서 버림 받고 소외된 자들을 품어 주셨다. 결국 나의 모든 허물과 죄를 대신하여 죽으심으로 나에게 생명을 주시고 누구든지 그를 믿고 영접하기만 하면 멸망에서 영생으로 옮겨가는 특권과 함께 나에게 그의 아들이라는 신분을 주셨다. 내가 하나님의 아들이 되고 하나님은 나의 아버지가 되셨다. 아들로서 할 일은 주께서 기도로 가르쳐 주신 것을 따라 하나님을 아버지라 부르고 그의 이름이 거룩하여 세상의 어떤 신이나 왕보다 구별되게 인정하고 그를 높인다. 내 할머니가 섬기시던 많은 신들이 아들의 병을 고치지 못하였는데 하나님을 믿음으로 병이 나으니 모든 신들을 버리고 오직 하나님만 아버지로 섬기게 되었다. 다음은 하나님 나라가 임하여 그의 뜻이 이루어지도록 할 것이다. 내 마음이나 가정에 하나님을 아버지로 모시고 그의 말씀과 뜻을 따르며 나의 삶을 그에게 맡겨드린다. 아버지께서 신실하게 내 삶을 인도하심을 보며 그는 나의 아버지요 나는 그의 아들임을 확인하고 그를 높이며 찬양한다. Father and Son While serving as a professor and chaplain at Myungsung Medical College in Ethiopia, I invited a visiting physician to the chapel. He had grown up in a Christian family but developed conflict with his father. When he brought home a score of 85 from school, he was beaten. The next time he brought home a 90, he was beaten again—“What is that?” his father said. When he scored 95 and ranked first in his class, his father scolded him, saying, “Five more points and it would have been perfect.” His father seemed never to be satisfied. Later, while attending a Bible study in college, he learned that God is Father. Yet because of the wounds from his own father, he decided he would not believe in Him and turned away from God. He lived as he pleased, graduated from medical school, became a surgeon, opened seven clinics, and worked busily. In the process, his only son left home and his wife departed as well. Though he was a respected doctor, he had neglected his family and had no time for his wife and son. Each evening he drank and returned home to be greeted only by an empty house. One night, drunk and overwhelmed with emptiness, he opened the door and collapsed on the floor. It was a moment filled with loneliness, sorrow, and a loss of the will to live. After some time, as he lay there sobbing, he felt someone warmly embrace him from behind. A peace he had never known filled his heart. Instantly, he knew it was God. With tears of joy, he received the Lord and was born again. Having experienced God’s great love, he longed to share that love with others. He closed all his successful clinics and went to a region in Africa where there were no doctors. There he became a devoted missionary, sharing the Father’s love and the gospel of Christ with the poor and the sick. The prophet Jeremiah heard the Lord say that God is the Father of Israel and that Israel is His firstborn (Jeremiah 31:9). The Israelites feared God and did not dare to call Him Father, yet God Himself declared that He was their Father and they were His children. A father gives birth to his children; because they are his, he raises them, cares for them, takes responsibility for them, and guides them. My own father, though poor and unable to receive much formal education, worked diligently to raise and educate me, providing everything I needed. When I became gravely ill, he was ready to sell his land to hospitalize me long-term and prayed earnestly for my healing, doing his very best. For more than sixty years since then, I have enjoyed good health, and when I think of him, I feel only gratitude. He greatly rejoiced when I studied abroad early and later returned to serve as a professor. Yet I regret that after going to America again, I could not properly care for my parents and repay their grace. God is almighty and righteous, yet to save me from sin and death, He took on flesh and came to this earth to dwell among us. He freed the poor, the sick, the oppressed, and the imprisoned, and embraced those rejected and marginalized by the world. Ultimately, by dying in my place for all my sins and transgressions, He gave me life. To all who believe in Him and receive Him, He grants the privilege of passing from destruction to eternal life and gives them the status of being His children. I became God’s son, and God became my Father. As a son, I follow what the Lord taught in prayer: I call God “Father,” acknowledge that His name is holy—set apart above every god or king of this world—and exalt Him. The many gods my grandmother once served could not heal her son’s illness, but when he believed in God and was healed, she abandoned all those gods and served only God as Father. Next, I pray that God’s kingdom may come and His will be done. I receive God as Father in my heart and in my home, follow His Word and His will, and entrust my life to Him. Seeing how faithfully the Father guides my life, I affirm that He is my Father and I am His son, and I exalt and praise Him.

막다른 골목 Blind Alley

막다른 골목 Blind Alley 앞으로도 뒤로도 물러날 수 없는 막다른 골목을 만날 때가 있다. 이스라엘이 출애굽하여 나아가는데 앞에는 홍해가 가로막고 뒤에는 애굽 군인들이 추적하는 것과 같다. 나무나 화초가 서로 대결하지 않고 다른 방향으로 뻗어가듯이 이들은 하나님을 향하였다. 야곱은 에서의 쌍둥이 동생으로 그의 욕망은 태에서부터 있었다. 먼저 태어나고자 형의 발꿈치를 잡았고 배고픈 형에게 죽 한 그릇을 주며 형의 위치를 받고 아버지를 속여 장자의 축복을 받았다. 형은 분노하고 동생을 죽이고자 한다. 야곱은 외삼촌집으로 도망하여 그 집 양을 치며 두 딸과 여종들을 아내로 삼아 가정을 이루고 11 자식을 낳고 많은 양을 모았다. 사촌들의 불평과 변한 삼촌의 안색을 보며 그는 가족과 재산을 가지고 야간도주를 한다. 외삼촌 가족은 동리 사람들을 모아 그를 추격하자 하나님이 가로막았다. 그의 목적지 고향에서는 형 에서가 20년이 지나 야곱이 온다는 소식을 듣고는 그에게 복수하고자 군사 400명을 이끌고 그를 맞으러 온다. 외삼촌 집으로도 갈 수 없고 형에게 대항 할 수도 없다. 진퇴양난에 얍복강을 만나 가족과 양들을 먼저 건너게 하고 자기는 그곳에 남아 밤새 하나님께 죽기 살기로 기도하며 누군가와 씨름한다. 그는 떠나야 하는데 야곱은 그를 놓지 않고 복을 구한다. 그의 이름 야곱을 하나님과 겨루어 이겼다는 이스라엘로 바꾸어 주었다 야곱은 씨름의 상대가 하나님이라는 것을 깨닫자 그는 하나님의 얼굴을 뵈었다고 그곳을 브니엘이라 하고 하나님께 제단을 쌓았다. 그는 씨름하며 허벅지 위골이 되어 절뚝거리지만 그 위에는 새로운 아침 해가 올랐다. 이제 형을 대면해야 한다. 그를 만나기 전 양과 낙타 등 많은 선물을 몇 차례 앞에 보내고 나중에 자기가 가족 앞에 서서 다리를 절룩거리며 몸을 숙여 일곱 번 절하며 나아간다. 대결을 포기하고 겸손하게 항복하는 모습이다. 형은 이미 받은 많은 선물로 마음이 풀렸지만 절뚝거리는 동생을 볼 때 불쌍한 생각이 들어 그에게 달려가 그를 안고 입을 맞춘다. 동생은 형님의 얼굴을 보니 하나님의 얼굴과 같다고 한다. 아첨이 아니라 형은 그의 생명을 잡고 있는 하나님과 같고 지난 밤 씨름한 그분의 얼굴과 같았다. 원한을 풀겠다는 생각이었으나 동생의 많은 선물과 항복하는 겸손이 형을 바꾸었다. 하나님이 주신 지혜요 생존 방식이다. 나중 하나님이 비천한 사람 몸으로 오시고 이사야가 묘사한대로 그 입을 열지 않고 도수장으로 끌려가는 어린양과 같이 온유하고 겸손하였다. 주께서 원수와 총독 앞에서 겸손하게 순응하여 그의 생명을 내어 놓음으로 인간 구원의 길을 열고 그는 영원한 구주가 되셨고 우리에게 삶의 길을 보여주신 것을 감사하며 주를 찬양한다. Blind Alley There are times when we encounter a blind alley where we can neither advance nor retreat. It is like when Israel came out of Egypt: the Red Sea blocked the way ahead, and the Egyptian soldiers pursued from behind. Just as trees and plants do not confront one another but grow in different directions, they turned toward God. Jacob was the twin brother of Esau, and his desire was present from the womb. Wanting to be born first, he grasped his brother’s heel. He gave his hungry brother a bowl of stew and obtained his position, and he deceived his father to receive the blessing of the firstborn. His brother became angry and sought to kill him. Jacob fled to his uncle’s house, tended his flocks, married his two daughters and maidservants, established a family, fathered eleven children, and accumulated many sheep. Seeing his cousins’ complaints and the changed expression on his uncle’s face, he fled by night with his family and possessions. When his uncle’s household gathered the townspeople to pursue him, God intervened and blocked them. At his destination, his homeland, his brother Esau heard after twenty years that Jacob was coming and, seeking revenge, came to meet him with four hundred men. Jacob could not return to his uncle’s house, nor could he confront his brother. In this dilemma, he reached the Jabbok River. He sent his family and flocks across first and remained behind, praying desperately to God through the night and wrestling with someone. When the man sought to leave, Jacob would not let him go but asked for a blessing. His name was changed from Jacob to Israel, meaning one who has wrestled with God and prevailed. Realizing that his opponent was God, Jacob said he had seen the face of God and named the place Peniel, building an altar there. Though his hip was wrenched as he wrestled and he limped, a new morning sun rose upon him. Now he had to face his brother. Before meeting him, he sent ahead many gifts—sheep, camels, and more—in several groups. Then he himself went before his family, limping, bowing down seven times as he approached. It was the posture of surrender and humility rather than confrontation. Though Esau’s heart had already softened by the many gifts, when he saw his limping brother, he was moved with compassion. He ran to him, embraced him, and kissed him. Jacob said that seeing his brother’s face was like seeing the face of God. It was not flattery; his brother held his life in his hands like God, and his face resembled the One with whom he had wrestled the night before. Esau had intended to settle his grievance, but his brother’s abundant gifts and humble surrender changed him. It was wisdom given by God—a way of survival. Later, God came in the humble form of a lowly man. As Isaiah described, He did not open His mouth but was gentle and humble like a lamb led to the slaughter. By submitting humbly before His enemies and the governor and giving up His life, the Lord opened the way of salvation for humanity. He became the eternal Savior and showed us the way of life. We give thanks and praise to the Lord.

성전의 영광 The Glory of the Tabernacle 솔로몬이 지은 성전은 이스라엘 역사의 번성기에 최고의 재료와 양식으로 훌륭하게 지었다. 봉헌할 때 솔로몬은 하나님이 들어와 계시라고 기도하였듯이 성전은 하나님을 모시는 왕궁과 같이 생각되고 하나님의 영광을 보여주는 것 같았다. 그러나 성전은 파괴되고 나라는 멸망하고 지도자와 포로로 잡혀가고 남은 자들은 흩어졌다. 때가 되어 포로가 해방되고 본토에 돌아왔으나 나라와 성전은 폐허가 되어 있다. 지나가는 자들은 하나님의 집이 이렇게 무너질 수 있나 놀리거나 불신할 것이다. 돌아온 그들은 모두 좌절과 실망으로 맥이 풀린다. 선지자 학개를 통하여 하나님은 말씀하신다. 총독 스룹바벨과 대제사장 여호수아와 백성에게 전하게 한다. 귀환한 그들이 성전을 재건하고자 하나 인력과 자료에서 이전 것과 비교할 수 없이 초라하다. 처음 성전을 본 사람들은 대성통곡한다. 싱실과 좌절, 실망과 실의에 찬 지도자와 백성에게 스스로 굳세게 하여 마음을 강하게 하라 세번이나 말씀한다. 지도자와 백성이 함께 굳세게 마음을 가지는 것이 시작이다. 그들은 현실을 보고 슬퍼하지만 선지자는 하나님의 계획을 현실로 보게 한다. 하나님이 그들과 함께 하고 그들 중에 계신다. 하나님의 약속의 말씀과 하나님의 영이 그들과 함께 하신다. 그렇다면 이전에는 함께 하지 않았기에 하나님의 집이 파괴되고 나라가 멸망하였던 것이다. 초라해 보이는 이 집에 만국의 보배가 몰려오고 나중 영광이 처음보다 더 클 것이라 한다. 집은 크기를 말하지만 그 집에 누가 사는가 하는 것이 중요하다. 성전이 아무리 화려하고 영광스러워도 여호와 하나님이 그 집에 계시지 않으면 그것은 돌과 나무에 불과하다. 돌 위에 돌 하나 남지 않고 다 무너지리라고 주께서 말씀하신다. 지금 그들이 기초를 쌓고 시작한 이 성전이 보기에는 초라해 보여도 그곳에 만국의 보배인 하나님의 아들 예수께서 계시면 그것은 하늘의 영광으로 충만하다. 예수께서 12살때 그곳에 가서 교사들과 대화하며 그것을 자기 아버지 집이라 한다. 아들이 아버지 집에 가면 그 집은 영화롭게 된다. 성전의 영광은 누가 그곳에 있는가로 좌우된다. 도둑의 굴이 되기도 하고 왕의 궁궐이 되기도 한다. 초라한 것에 마음이 아파 울지만 그들이 힘을 내야 할 것은 성전의 주인공 예수께서 가운데 계시고 그의 말씀과 그의 영이 성전에 모이는 백성과 함께 한다면 그것이 힘이요 영광이다. 하나님은 우리 각자를 성전이라 하신다. 외모나 재능이나 내 세울 것이 없고 소외를 느끼는 노년이 되었다 하여도 주의 말씀 주의 영이 함께 하겠다고 약속하신다. 주께서 함께 하신다면 세상의 모든 금은보화를 얻는 것보다 더 귀하고 영광스럽다. 내가 마음을 청소하고 주가 계실 집으로 준비하여 주를 초청하면 주님은 기쁨으로 응하시고 나와 함께 하신다. 주 앞에서 주와 함께 동행하며 살다가 어느 날 주께서 부르시는 에녹처럼 들림 받아 주께서 나를 위하여 준비하신 영원한 집으로 옮길 날을 바라보며 그 날을 기다리며 주를 찬양한다. test

불편한 고집 Uncomfortable stubbornness 어느 가정이 이사하여 아이들 방을 정하는데 둘째가 부모 방 외에 제일 큰 방을 달라고 고집을 피운다. 아빠가 그것은 언니를 위한 것이라고 설명해도 성경에서 야곱이 형보다 큰 것을 택하였다며 고집을 피우자 땅과 아빠는 불편을 느꼈다. 선지자 요나는 니느웨러 가라는 하나님의 말씀을 듣지 않고 다시스로 가는 배를 탄다. 니느웨는 죄악의 도성이라 멸망하는 것이 마땅하다고 생각하였다. 그것이 공의다. 그는 마음이 불편하여 밑창에 내려가 잠을 청한다. 바다에 폭풍이 일어나고 위험해지자그 이유가 요나라는 사실이 나타나자 그는 책임을 지고 바다에 던짐을 받았다. 자기로 인하여 배에 있는 자가 모두 고난을 당하는 것이 정당하지 않는 것을 안다. 바다에 던져지자 큰 물고기가 그를 삼켰다. 그는 고기 배 속에서 정신이 난다. 답답하고 지옥 같은 고통에서 하나님께 부르짖었더니 주께서 들으셨다고 한다. 3일 후에 소화 불량 불편을 견디지 못한 물고기는 그를 해변에 토해 내었다. 하나님이 다시 그에게 니느웨로 가라 하신다. 더 이상 고집하지 못하고 가서 불편한 심정으로 하루를 다니며 40일이면 이 성이 멸망할 것이라 전하다. 그곳 사람들은 악하기에 요나늘 잡아 그 말을 하지 못하게 하거나 감옥에 넣을 줄 알았지만 반응은 전혀 다르다. 큰 자 작은 자 모두가 그들의 잘못을 깨닫고 금식하며 회개한다. 왕의 명령으로 사람만 아니라 짐승들까지 모두 금식하게 하였다. 짐승의 금식은 처음보는 일이다. 요나가 물고기 배 안에서 죽음을 대하고 기도한 것과 다름이 없다. 요나는 멸망을 선포한 후 성 밖에 앉아 그의 선포대로 그 성이 멸망할 것을 기다리며 바라보고 있다. 더위를 피히고자 박넝쿨 아래 앉았다. 벌레가 넝쿨을 잘라 먹어 마르니 뜨꺼움이 닥치자그는 분노한다. 하나님은 그가 외 분노하는지 물으신다. 그는 분노하고 죽는 것이 낫다고 한다. 하나님은 다시 물으신다. 네가 심지도 않고 기르지도 않은 박넝쿨로 분누하나? 니느웨의 12만 사람과 부수한 짐승을 아끼는 것이 당연하지 않겠나? 하나님의 공의만 아니라 사랑과긍휼, 오래 참으심을 요나에게 깨닫게 하신나. 요나나 하나님이나 불편스런 고집에 변화가 왔다는 말은 없다. 사악한 니느웨는 회개함으로 용서 받고 150년간 번영을 누렸지만 불편스런 고집을 부리던 요나는 니느웨보다 오히려 더 사악한 것은 아닌지! 예수께서 하나님 나라를 선포한 때 하나님의 도상 예루살렘 사람들은 그를 외면하고 박해하였으나 이방인처럼 멸시 받던 갈릴리와 사마라이는 주를 영접하고 따랐다. 주를 따른다고 잘못과 죄를 저지르지 않는 것이 아니다. 죄 없는 자가 없기에 하나님 아들 예수께서 죄인을 사랑하셔서 죄인을 대신하여 고난 당하고 십자가에서 죽으심으로 우리의 모든 죄를 청산하셨다. 누구든지 그를 믿기만 하면 멸망에서 영원한 생명으로 옮겨진다. 오늘 내가 살고자 고집을 피우지만 영원한 생명을 위하여 마련된 길과 진리와 생명이신 예수를 영접한다는 것이 무엇보다 큰 특권이요 축복이 아니겠나! Uncomfortable Stubbornness A family moves into a new home and begins assigning rooms to their children. The second child stubbornly insists on taking the largest room, apart from the parents’ bedroom. Even when the father explains that the room is meant for the older sister, the child persists, arguing that Jacob in the Bible chose what was greater than his older brother. This obstinacy makes both the parents and the sister uncomfortable. The prophet Jonah, too, hears God’s command to go to Nineveh but instead boards a ship bound for Tarshish. He believes Nineveh, a city of great wickedness, deserves destruction—that this is justice. Troubled in his heart, he goes down into the depths of the ship and falls asleep. A violent storm arises, putting everyone in danger. When it becomes clear that Jonah is the cause, he takes responsibility and is thrown into the sea, knowing it is not right for everyone on the ship to suffer because of him. Once cast into the sea, a great fish swallows Jonah. Inside the belly of the fish, he comes to his senses. In the suffocating, hell-like anguish, he cries out to God, and the Lord hears him. After three days, the fish, unable to endure its distress, vomits Jonah onto the shore. God speaks to him again: “Go to Nineveh.” Unable to persist in his stubbornness any longer, Jonah goes—though with a reluctant and uncomfortable heart—and walks through the city for a day, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” Jonah expects the people to seize him, silence him, or throw him into prison because of their evil ways. But the response is entirely different. From the greatest to the least, the people recognize their wrongdoing, fast, and repent. By royal decree, not only the people but even the animals are made to fast—an unprecedented act. In this, they mirror Jonah’s own prayer in the belly of the fish, where he faced death and cried out to God. After proclaiming judgment, Jonah sits outside the city, waiting to see it destroyed as he foretold. He shelters himself under a vine to escape the heat. When a worm gnaws the vine and it withers, and the scorching heat beats down, Jonah becomes angry. God asks him why he is so angry. Jonah replies that he is angry enough to die. God asks again, “Is it right for you to be angry about the vine you did not plant or tend? Should I not have compassion on Nineveh, with its 120,000 people and many animals?” Through this, God teaches Jonah not only about justice, but also about love, mercy, and patience. Yet the text does not say that either Jonah or God changes in stubbornness—only that God reveals His heart. Wicked Nineveh is forgiven through repentance and enjoys prosperity for 150 years. But Jonah, clinging to his uncomfortable stubbornness, makes us wonder whether he is, in the end, more wicked than Nineveh itself. When Jesus proclaimed the kingdom of God, the people of Jerusalem—the very city of God—turned away from Him and persecuted Him. Yet Galilee and Samaria, regions despised like the Gentiles, welcomed Him and followed Him. Following the Lord does not mean we never sin or make mistakes. There is no one without sin. That is why Jesus, the Son of God, loved sinners, suffered in their place, and died on the cross to pay for all our sins. Whoever believes in Him is transferred from destruction to eternal life. Today, though I may stubbornly cling to my own way of living, is it not the greatest privilege and blessing to receive Jesus—the Way, the Truth, and the Life—who has prepared the path to eternal life for us?

단절 없는 연결 Etermal Connection 혹독한 겨울 추위가 몰아치지만 아파트 안은 따뜻하게 유지되어 추위를 잊고 지난다. 잠자리는 전기 장판에서 온돌처럼 잠을 잘 수가 있다. 그런데 전기 장판이 따뜻하지 않다. 장판과 전기를 연결하는 부분에 문제가 생겼다. 어떻게 하면 불이 들어오고 또 불이 들어오지 않는다. 연결된 부분의 철사가 끊어진 것이다. 손으로 당기어 연결하면 불이 들어오다가 손을 놓으면 꺼지는 것을 본다. 연결이 제대로 될 때 기능을 하고 몸을 맡기고 편하게 잠을 잘 수가 있다. 잘 연결되는 것은 신뢰다. 몸에 문제가 생겨 의시를 보러 갈 때도 마찬가지다. 의사를 의뢰하는 마음이 어떤 약보다 효과가 더 있다는 사실을 안다. 의사와 충분한 이야기를 나누어 문제를 알게 하고 그는 조사를 한 후 진단을 하고 처방을 한다. 서로 신뢰관계가 될 때 치유가 제대로 된다. 사람이 해결하지 못하는 많은 문제가 있다. 개인이나 나라나 힘과 힘의 대결로 고통이 있다. 이스라엘은 주변 나라로부터 많은 시련을 받았다. 이웃 나라와 동맹을 맺고 나라를 지키려 하지만 그것도 한계가 있다. 아무리 건강하고 힘이 있어도 사람에게는 한계가 있다. 그러나 무한한 능력과 지혜로 인간 역사를 주관하는 하나님은 영원토록 변하지 않으신다. 중요한 것은 그와 연결되는 신뢰다. 그를 믿고 의지힐 때 그의 힘을 받을 수 있다. 그는 나라나 개인의 강하고 약한 것을 문제 삼지 않는다. 높은 자를 낮추고 높은 성벽을 파괴하여 무너뜨린다. 여리고 성벽이 아무리 든든하여도 순식간에 무너지게 하신다. 하나님이 구원이 되시고 무너지지 않는 성벽이 되신다. 그러기에 그를 향한 믿음의 마음을 흔들리지 않고 굳게 정하는 것이다. 심지가 견고한 자는 연결 고리를 놓지 않는다. 주와 연결될 때 오는 것은 평안에서 평안임을 이사야 선지자는 천명한다(26장). 왕이 없던 사사시대에 이스라엘 역사는 혼란이었으나 사사가 사람들의 마음을 주께로 향하게 하는 동안 나라는 40년 80년 태평하였다. 여호와를 구원의 성벽으로 삼는 자가 복이 있다. 여호와를 의뢰하여도 때로 어려운 환난이 있다. 질병도 오고 실패도 겪는다. 하나님이 허락하시며 우리의 의뢰를 확인하는 것이다. 좋을 때만 아니라 어려운 때에도 하나님은 우리를 잊거나 버리지 않으시고 여전히 사랑하며 돌보신다. 내가 깨어 활동할 때도 나를 도우시지만 내가 잠을 자거나 병상에서 신음할 때도 함께 하신다.그는 힘이요 방패이시나 우리에게 때로 어려움을 겪게 하신다. 그 어려움을 가지고 믿음으로 살게 하신다. 삶의 모든 형편과 순간에 그와의 관계가 단절되지 않고 연결되어 의뢰할 때 주로부터 오는 따뜻한 사랑과 위로를 경험하는 것이 삶의 힘이다. 북한을 방문하여 신의주에서 평양까지 기차로 갔다. 한 때는 서울 부산으로 연결되어 있었다. 통일이 되어 다시 연결되어 자유롭게 내왕할 날을 내다본다. 하나님과 사람 사이가 단절되어 불신과 두려움이었지만 하나님의 아들 예수께서 버림 받듯이 십자가에서 고통을 겪었지만 이로서 하나님과 사람, 사람과 사람을 서로 연결하고 신뢰하게 하여 서로 사랑하며 평안과 생명을 얻게 하신다. 나의 관계는 어떠한가! 신뢰와 사랑으로 연결되어 있는가! 연결고리 예수께서 도우시려도 우리 곁에 계심을 감사한다. Eternal Connection Although the bitter cold of winter rages outside, the inside of an apartment remains warm, allowing us to forget the cold. At night, we can sleep comfortably on an electric heating mat, much like traditional ondol floor heating. But one day, the mat is no longer warm. There is a problem at the point where the mat connects to the electricity. Sometimes the light comes on, sometimes it does not. The wire at the connection point has been broken. When the wire is pulled and held, the light turns on, but as soon as the hand is released, it goes off. Only when the connection is properly restored does it function, allowing us to entrust our body to it and sleep in comfort. A good connection is trust. The same is true when we go to see a doctor because something is wrong with our body. We know that the trust with which we consult a doctor can be more effective than any medicine. We speak thoroughly with the doctor, helping him understand the problem; he then examines, diagnoses, and prescribes treatment. Healing truly takes place when there is a relationship of mutual trust. There are many problems human beings cannot resolve on their own. Individuals and nations alike suffer through conflicts of power against power. Israel endured many trials from surrounding nations. Though it formed alliances with neighboring countries to protect itself, even that had its limits. No matter how healthy or strong one may be, human beings have limitations. But God, who governs human history with infinite power and wisdom, never changes forever. What matters is the trust that connects us to Him. When we believe in Him and rely on Him, we receive His strength. He does not judge nations or individuals by whether they are strong or weak. He brings down the proud and destroys high walls. No matter how strong the walls of Jericho were, He caused them to collapse in an instant. God Himself becomes our salvation and an unshakable wall. Therefore, we set our hearts firmly and unwaveringly toward Him in faith. A person with a steadfast mind does not let go of the connecting link. When we are connected to the Lord, what comes is peace upon peace, as the prophet Isaiah declares (chapter 26). During the period of the Judges, when Israel had no king, the nation was in chaos; but whenever a judge turned the hearts of the people back to the Lord, the land enjoyed peace for forty or even eighty years. Blessed is the one who makes the LORD his wall of salvation. Even when we trust in the LORD, there are times of hardship and suffering. Illness comes, and we experience failure. God allows these in order to test and confirm our trust in Him. Not only in good times but also in difficult times, God does not forget us or abandon us; He continues to love and care for us. He helps us when we are awake and active, and He is with us even when we are sleeping or groaning on a sickbed. He is our strength and shield, yet at times He allows us to go through hardships. Through those hardships, He teaches us to live by faith. In every circumstance and moment of life, when our relationship with Him remains unbroken and connected in trust, we experience the warm love and comfort that come from the Lord. This is the strength of life. I once visited North Korea and traveled by train from Sinuiju to Pyongyang. At one time, this railway was connected all the way from Seoul to Busan. I look forward to the day when reunification will restore that connection, allowing free travel once again. The relationship between God and humanity was once severed, marked by distrust and fear. But God’s Son, Jesus, though He suffered on the cross as one who was rejected, restored the connection—between God and humanity, and between people and people—so that we might trust one another, love one another, and receive peace and life. What about my relationships? Are they connected by trust and love? I am thankful that Jesus, the connecting link, is with us, ready to help us.
