교회의 탄생 The Birth of the Church 미국 3대 대통령 토마스 제퍼슨 생가가 있는 버지니아 샤롯츠빌 소재 버지니아 대학교에 유학 온 대학원생 가운데 그리스도인 몇 명이 주일에 모여 예배를 시작하였다. 내가 리치몬드에 공부하러 갔을 때 목사가 필요하다는 소식을 듣고 나는 주일에 가족과 함께 85마일을 가서 예배를 인도하며 교회가 형성되었다. 교회는 이렇게 또는 목사가 몇 사람을 모아 시작하여 하나의 교회가 되지만 최초의 교회는 예수님의 제자들이 시작하였다. 베드로와 제자들은 실망과 슬픔을 가졌다. 모든 것을 버리고 예수를 메시아로 믿고 따랐는데 그는 가르침과 사역에서 전대미문의 큰 능력을 나타내었으나 기존 종교 세력의 고발을 당하고 아무런 저항 없이 십자가 처형을 받고 무덤에 묻힌다. 하늘이 무너졌다. 그가 부활하였다며 나타났으나 믿기가 아랴웠고 그들에게 마지막 부탁을 하고는 하늘로 사라졌다. 마음은 공허해지고 주를 처형한 사람들을 두려워하여 제자들은 함께 모여 기도하는 가운데 성령이 임하였다. 그들은 용기가 생기고 담대하게 나가 예수를 구주로 전한다. 여러 나라에서 온 사람들이 각자 자기 말로 알아 듣는 놀라운 일이 일어난다. 베드로 사도가 외친다. 이스라엘 사람들이 십자가에 못박아 죽인 예수를 하나님이 다시 살려 주와 그리스도가 되게 하셨다고 한다. 듣는 사람들이 어떻게 할가 묻는다. 생명의 말씀이 역사한다. 너희가 회개하고 그리스도 예수의 이름으로 세례 받고 죄 사함을 받으라 그러면 성령의 선물을 받으리라 한다. 이에 세례 받은 자가 3천명이 되고 교회가 탄생하였다. 처음 시작된 교회다. 이들은 사도들의 가르침을 받고 음식을 나누고 교제하며 성전에서나 집에서나 모이기를 힘쓰고 가진 것을 나누고 물건을 팔아서 나누기에 가난한 사람이 없을 정도로 하나의 새로운 공동체를 이루었다. 하나님을 찬양하고 예배하며 힘을 얻고 믿음의 결단과 헌신으로 싦이 변화되고 사람들의 인정과 칭찬을 받으니 믿는 자가 더 많아지다. 교회는 뻗어가고 기쁨으로 가득하다. 처음 교화는 성령이 중심에서 인도한다. 예수의 죽음과 부활로 구조가 되신다는 말씀과 기도로 든든해진다. 회개와 세례로 변화된 사람들로 함께 먹고 교제한다. 무엇이나 가진 것을 서로 나누며 하나의 가족임을 확인한다. 하나님을 찬양하고 예배하고 나가서 예수를 구주로 전한다. 반대와 박해가 일어나자 먼 지방으로 가서 전도하며 예루살렘에서 유대와 사마리아 땅끝까지 뻗어가며 선교한다. 시도와 교사, 전도자, 섬기는 자로 일을 아름답게 진행한다. 오늘 교회는 초대교회의 전통을 이어 받아 사역과 구조에서 더 발전하여 다양한 사역으로 온 세계로 확장한다. 교회가 구조적으로 더욱 복잡해지면서 조직 운영과 관리에 많은 비중을 두면서 초대교회의 원래적 사역이 약화되는 경우가 있지만 주의 교회는 성령으로 항상 새롭게 되고 처음 교회의 모습을 회복하는 공동체가 되어야 할 것이다. 주께서 기뻐 축복하시고 사회에서 칭찬 받으며 교회는 세상의 소금과 빛으로 더욱 많은 사람을 주 앞으로 인도하며 주께서 재림하시기 전에 땅끝까지 복음을 전하여 믿는 자로 교회를 태어나게 해야 할 것이다. The Birth of the Church Among the graduate students who came to study at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville—where the birthplace of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, is located—there were several Christians who began gathering on Sundays for worship. When I went to Richmond for my studies, I heard that they needed a pastor. So every Sunday, my family and I traveled 85 miles to lead their worship, and from that gathering a church was formed. A church often begins this way: a pastor gathers a few people or a small group starts meeting and it grows into a congregation. But the very first church was begun by the disciples of Jesus. Peter and the disciples were filled with disappointment and sorrow. They had left everything behind, believed Jesus to be the Messiah, and followed Him. He showed unprecedented power in His teaching and ministry, yet He was accused by the established religious authorities, offered no resistance, was crucified, and laid in a tomb. Their world collapsed. Though He appeared to them after rising from the dead, it was difficult for them to believe. After giving them His final instructions, He ascended into heaven. Their hearts became empty, and they hid in fear of those who had executed the Lord. But while they were gathered together in prayer, the Holy Spirit came upon them. Courage filled their hearts, and they boldly went out to proclaim Jesus as Lord and Savior. People from many nations heard the message each in their own language—an astonishing miracle. Then the apostle Peter proclaimed that the Jesus whom the people of Israel had crucified, God had raised from the dead and made both Lord and Christ. The listeners asked what they should do. The life-giving Word worked in their hearts. Peter declared: “Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” About three thousand people were baptized, and thus the church was born—the very first church. These new believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, shared meals, and lived in fellowship. They met both in the temple courts and in homes, shared what they had, and even sold their possessions so that no one among them lacked anything. They became a new kind of community. They praised God, worshiped with joy, gained strength, and their lives were transformed through faith, commitment, and dedication. People respected them, and the number of believers grew. The church expanded and was filled with great joy. The earliest church was guided and empowered by the Holy Spirit. It was firmly established through the message of salvation by Jesus’ death and resurrection and through prayer. Those who repented and were baptized were transformed, shared meals, and lived in fellowship. Whatever they possessed, they shared, affirming that they were one family. They praised God, worshiped faithfully, and proclaimed Jesus as Lord. When opposition and persecution arose, they traveled to distant regions, preaching the gospel from Jerusalem to Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Their ministries—apostles, teachers, evangelists, and servants—worked together beautifully. Today’s church receives the heritage of the early church and has developed further in structure and ministry, expanding worldwide with diverse forms of service. Although the church has become more complex and places significant focus on organization and administration—sometimes weakening the original mission of the early church—the Lord’s church must always be renewed by the Holy Spirit and strive to recover the character of the first community of believers. As the Lord delights in and blesses His church, may it continue to receive the praise of society, serve as the salt and light of the world, lead many to the Lord, and proclaim the gospel to the ends of the earth before Christ returns—birthing new believers who form the church. test
