나그네의 하나님 God of the Sojuouners 한얼이 목회하다 은퇴하며 교회가 주는 은퇴금이 얼마인지 알고는 재정을 맡은 이에게 그것을 둘로 나누어 수표를 만들고 은퇴식에 초대된 장로교 재단과 그가 졸업한 신학교 두 대표에게 직접 전달하여 어려운 학생을 위한 장학기금으로 사용하게 하였다. 그는 은퇴금을 만져보지도 않고 오히려 가족과 함께 상당한 액수를 첨가하였다. 이를 보던 한 딸이 묻는다. 아빠,어떻게 살려고 은퇴금을 모두 주어버리나 걱정하였다. 그는 유학 올 때 가방 하나 들고 와 지금까지 굶지 않고 살도록 도우신 하나님이 계속 일 하실 것이라 대답하였다. 하나님은 애굽에 400년을 살면서도 여전히 나그네요 종의 신분이던 자기 백성을 구출하여 조상에게 약속한 땅을 향하여 가는 길에 광야에서 40년을 보냈다. 하나님은 불과 구름 기둥으로 길을 인도하시고 아침 저녁 먹을 것을 내려 주셨다. 하나님은 이들이 목적지에 정착하는 것을 내다보고 명령하신다. 나그네와 고아 과부들을 선대하고 돌아보라 하시며 재판할 때 그들에게 불리하게 하지 말고 추수할 때 곡식이나 감람나무 열매와 포도를 수확할 때 얼마를 남겨두라 하신다. 나그네와 고아와 과부들을 위한 것이다. 하나님은 그들이 애굽에서 나그네였다는 것을 기억하라 하신다 (신명기 24장). 사회에서 약자인 나그네와 고아 과부를 보살피시는 하나님의 사랑을 자기 백성을 통하여 베풀게 하셨다. 한얼이 공부하며 학교가 주는 장학금과 아파트를 받아 살지만 가족생활비는 자기가 마련해야 했다. 부인이 직장을 구하기 까지는 먹고 살기가 어려운 때 어느 아침에 문을 열자 깜짝 놀랐다. 문 앞에 많은 식료품이 놓여 있는 것이다. 부인이 주급을 받기까지 일주일에 한번씩 누군가가 만나를 제공한 것이다. 나중에 안 것은 사업하는 어느 집사를 통하여 하나님이 하신 일이었다. 사람이 사는 세상에 나그네와 고아 과부는 언제나 있고 이들은 스스로 살기가 참으로 어렵다. 이들은 사랑의 손길이 필요하기에 하나님은 국가 또는 그가 사랑하는 자를 통하여 그 필요를 채워주게 하신다. 주의 백성에게 주신 사명이다. 나는 풍부하지는 못하였지만 개인과 30여 단체의 필요에 응하여 조금이나마 도울 마음과 돕는 특권을 가졌다. 단체의 경우 액수는 많지 않아도 오래 동안 힘을 보태었다. 팬데믹을 지나며 아쉽게도 중단하였다. 지금도 많은 도움 요청을 받지만 자신이 나이와 한계를 실감하며 안타깝게도 참여하지 못하고 축복 기도를 한다. 내가 도울 능력이 수 없거나 이미 충분하게 했다는 것이 아니라 다른 사람에게 더 많은 기회를 제공한다는 마음이다. 시력저하로 서류 하나 하나를 정리하고 처리하는 것이 부담스런 일이기도 하여 삶의 태두리를 좁히는 것이 좋겠다는 것이다. 내가 목회하며 교회가 성장하자 주택가 이웃이 불편을 느낀다는 소리가 들리고 어떤 이는 심지어 네 나라로 돌아가라는 말을 하기도 하였다. 나라의 인정을 받고 열심히 일하며 세금을 납부하는 좋은 시민으로 산다고 생각하지만 색갈이 다른 지만 주민들의 눈에는 우리가 여전히 불편한 나그네로 보인 것이다. 그러나 하나님은 나그네를 잊지 않고 돌보시며 채워 주심으로 빌려 모이던 교회당을 매입하고 지역주민과 화해의 좋은 관계를 이루었다. 지존하신 하나님은 본토인을 사랑하시지만 도움을 더욱 필요로 하는 나그네를 절대로 외면하지 않으신다. 직장과 사업으로 안정되게 살다가 은퇴하고 노년에 이르면 여러가지 제한을 맛보며 한쪽으로 밀려나는 외로움을 느끼며 나그네 심정을 가지기도 하지만 그때가 참으로 하나님을 가까이 하난 기회가 되고 주의 눈과 귀, 그의 팔이 크게 열려 있는 것을 보며 감사한다. 가진 자는 하나님 없이도 살 수 있다고 생각하지만 약한 나그네에게는 도우시는 하나님이 삶의 힘이요 위로가 된다. 하나님의 도움이 매일 임하는 것을 경험한다. 천지에 충만하신 하나님은 모든 사람의 하나님이면서도 특히 나그네와 고아 과부 같은 힘이 없고 약한 자를 더욱 살펴 주God시는 사랑의 하나님인 것을 감사하며 찬양한다. God of the Sojourners When Haneol retired from pastoral ministry and was informed of the amount of the church’s retirement gift, he asked the treasurer to divide it into two checks. At his retirement service, he personally handed them to representatives of a Presbyterian foundation and his alma mater, designating the funds as scholarships for students in need. He never once handled the money for himself; instead, he and his family added a significant additional sum. Seeing this, one of his daughters asked in worry, “Dad, how will we live if you give away all your retirement money?” He gently replied that when he first arrived in America with nothing but a single suitcase, it was God who kept him from ever going hungry—and that God would continue His work. God’s people had lived in Egypt for four centuries as strangers and slaves. Yet God delivered them and set them on the long journey toward the land He had promised to their ancestors. In the wilderness, He guided them with pillars of cloud and fire and provided food every morning and evening. Knowing His people would one day settle in their new land, God commanded them to show kindness to the sojourner, the orphan, and the widow. They were not to be disadvantaged in court, and during harvest they were to leave behind a portion of grain, olives, and grapes for them. God reminded Israel to remember that they themselves had once been sojourners in Egypt (Deuteronomy 24). God’s concern for the vulnerable—sojourners, orphans, and widows—was to be expressed through the compassion of His people. During his years of study, Haneol received scholarships and housing, but he was responsible for providing for his family. Before his wife found employment, life was difficult. One morning, when they opened their door, they were astonished to find bags of groceries left outside. Until his wife received her first paycheck, someone quietly delivered “manna” to their doorstep each week. Only later did he learn that God had done this through a deacon who owned a business. In every age and every society, there are always sojourners, orphans, and widows—those who struggle simply to survive. Because they need compassionate care, God meets their needs through the state or through those whom He loves. This is the calling He entrusts to His people. Though I was never wealthy, I have had the privilege—however small—to respond to the needs of individuals and over thirty organizations. My contributions were not large, but I supported them faithfully for many years. Sadly, after the pandemic, I had to stop. Even now, I receive many requests for help, but as I grow older and increasingly aware of my limitations, I can no longer participate. Instead, I offer prayers of blessing. It is not because I lack resources or believe I have done enough, but because I desire to leave room for others to step in. With failing eyesight making paperwork more burdensome, I sense that narrowing the circle of my responsibilities is wise. As the church I pastored grew, some neighbors in the residential area began to express discomfort; a few even told me to “go back to your country.” Although I believed I was a good citizen—recognized by the government, working diligently, and faithfully paying taxes—some neighbors still saw us as unsettling strangers. Yet God did not forget the sojourner. He cared for us, and in time we were able to purchase the building we had been renting and establish a warm, reconciled relationship with the community. The Most High God loves the native-born, yet He never turns away the sojourner who is in even greater need. Those who have lived stable lives through work and business may, upon entering retirement and old age, feel the limits of their strength and the loneliness of being pushed aside—tasting the heart of a sojourner. Yet that very season becomes a sacred opportunity to draw near to God and discover how wide open His eyes, His ears, and His mighty arms truly are. The wealthy may imagine they can live without God, but for the weak and wandering, the God who helps becomes their strength and comfort. I experience His help day by day. I praise and give thanks to God, who fills heaven and earth—who is the God of all humanity, yet especially watches over the powerless: the sojourner, the orphan, and the widow, with a love that never fails. test
