내 안에 누가 자리하나 Who Abides in Me? 도널드 트럼프가 대통령으로 2025년 취임하자 바로 파나마 운하를 탈환하고 그린랜드를 주장하더니 이스라엘을 지도에서 없애겠다는 이란의 핵프로그램을 파괴하고 마약 카르텔의 주범이라 하는 베네수엘라 니콜라스 마두로 대통령이 결겹이 둘러 쌓인 요새에서 트럼프를 조롱하며 잡아가라 하던 그를 잠자던 침상에서 생포하여 뉴욕으로 압송하고 재판에 회부하였다.그와 깊은 관계를 맺고 있던 중국이나 러시아가 아무런 반응을 보이지 않는다. 트럼프와 미국이 얼마나 강한가를 알기에 그의 세계 질서와 자유 확장에 감히 저항하지 못하고 보고만 있는 것 같다. 강한 트럼프가 있기에 일어나는 일이다. 이스라엘은 작은 나라로 많은 전쟁과 고난을 겪지만 스바냐는 ‘너의 하나님 여호와가 너희 가운데 계시니 그는 구원을 베푸실 전능자이시니 기뻐하라’한다. 전능하신 하나님이 그들 가운데 계실 뿐 아니라 그는 그들을 기뻐하기에 누가 감히 그들을 치거나 괴롭힐 수 없다는 말이다. 지금도 이스라엘은 인구 천만이 되지 않으면서 주변 2억 이상에 원수에게 둘러 쌓여서도 건재하고 있다. 이는 개인에게도 해당한다. 내 속에 누가 자리하고 있나? 나의 중학교 시절 ‘불가능이리란 어리석은 자의 사전에만 있을 뿐’이라는 나폴레옹의 말을 좋아하며 책상 앞에 붙여 두었다. 성경을 읽으며 ‘내게 능력 주시는 자 안에서 모든 일을 할 수 있다’는 말씀을 받으며 동시에 나폴레옹이 손바닥만한 센트 헤레나 섬 귀양살이로 삶을 마친 역사를 알고 그의 허풍 벽걸이를 찢어버렸다. 내 속에 자기가 충만하여도 참으로 허약한 사람이다. 호흡, 심장 박동, 소화기능 등 아무것도 주장할 수 없고 닥치는 질병이나 고통을 스스로 플지 못하고 머리털 하나도 희고 검게 할 수 없는 약한 존재다. 그러나 나를 지으신 하나님, 나를 사랑하여 나를 위하여 자기 몸을 주신 예수께[서 내 속에 자리하고 계신다면 어떤 일이 일어날까? 무슨 염려할 것이 있을까? 자기 형상인 나를 책임지고 돌보시는 것을 안다. 파스칼은 세상의 모두 것을 가져도 하나님이 뺘지면 그 자리는 비어 있어 공허를 가진다고 한다. 어거스틴은 하나님 안에서만 참 안식을 맛 보았다. 60여년 전 죽을 병이 들린 때부터 지금까지의 삶의 바다에 풍랑과 역경이 몰아쳐도 배에 예수께서 계시기에 안전하게 항구를 향한다. 나의 삶은 스스로가 아니라 오직 내 안에 계시며 나를 사랑하시는 하나님 아버지의 보호와 인도하심을 알기에 날마다 그에게 감사하고 순종하다가 그가 부르시는 날 주 앞에 서기를 기도한다. Maduro had mocked Trump from within a heavily fortified stronghold, daring him to “come and get me,” but was seized from his bed while asleep, extradited to New York, and brought to trial. China and Russia, which had maintained deep ties with him, showed no reaction at all. Knowing how powerful Trump and the United States are, they seemed unable to resist his vision of world order and the expansion of freedom, merely watching from the sidelines. These events happened because there was a strong Trump. Israel, though a small nation that has endured many wars and hardships, is encouraged by the prophet Zephaniah: “The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; rejoice.” This means that not only is the Almighty God in their midst, but He also delights in them—so who would dare strike them or trouble them? Even today, Israel, with a population of less than ten million, remains firm while surrounded by more than two hundred million enemies. This applies to individuals as well. Who dwells within me? During my middle school years, I liked Napoleon’s saying, “The word ‘impossible’ exists only in the dictionary of fools,” and posted it in front of my desk. Later, while reading the Bible, I received the word, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” At the same time, I learned the history of Napoleon ending his life in exile on the tiny island of Saint Helena. I tore down that boastful slogan from my wall. Even if a person is filled with self, he is truly weak. He cannot claim control over his breathing, heartbeat, or digestion. He cannot solve the diseases and pains that come upon him, nor can he make a single hair white or black. He is a fragile being. But what happens if God, who created me, and Jesus, who loved me and gave His body for me, dwell within me? What is there to worry about? I know that He takes responsibility for and cares for me, His image-bearer. Pascal said that even if one possesses everything in the world, without God that place remains empty and full of emptiness. Augustine found true rest only in God. For more than sixty years, from the time I was struck with a terminal illness until now, storms and adversity have battered the sea of my life. Yet because Jesus is in the boat, it moves safely toward the harbor. My life is not sustained by myself, but by God the Father who dwells within me and loves me. Knowing His protection and guidance, I give thanks and obey Him daily, praying that when He calls me, I may stand before Him.
