Perfect Peace

Perfect Peace A little child was walking down the road with his father when he saw a large, frightening-looking dog barking and coming toward him. Terrified, the child ran close to his father and took hold of his hand. Then, pointing his foot toward the dog, he shouted, “Go away!” In the past, our customary greetings were closely related to peace and well-being. We would ask, “Are you well?” or say, “Go in peace” and “Stay in peace.” Having suffered through wars, plundering, frequent robberies and assaults, diseases, and many other troubles, people longed for peace because their lives were so often unstable and insecure. But where does true peace come from? Will it come when there are no wars, thieves, poverty, or diseases? Even wealthy families sometimes build strong gates and put barbed wire on their walls because they do not feel secure. I once visited the People's Palace in Romania, built by the country's dictator, Nicolae Ceaușescu. It was constructed as one of the largest single buildings in the world, second in size only to the Pentagon in the United States. The lowest level was connected to the airport by underground roads, while the roof was designed to open so that helicopters could take off and land. Although Ceaușescu enjoyed great power and wealth, he lived in constant anxiety. Eventually, a revolution brought his downfall, and he was publicly executed after a trial by the revolutionary authorities. His life ended in tragedy despite all the power and wealth he had accumulated. The prophet Isaiah looked upon the miserable condition of his nation, Judah, as it faced the Babylonian invasion and the prospect of its people being taken into captivity. To a people trembling with fear and anxiety, he proclaimed the way to perfect peace: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” (Isaiah 26:3). The repetition of the word peace emphasizes the completeness and fullness of that peace. “Peace, peace” means perfect peace, the peace that God Himself gives. God is the everlasting Rock, unshakable and immovable. Those who trust in Him will not be shaken but will find stability and security. Therefore, Isaiah calls us to trust in and rely upon Him. Because God is invisible, people often place their trust in visible powers and nations. They relied on Egypt, trusted in Babylon, and worshiped their gods. Yet both Egypt and Babylon eventually fell and were destroyed. During China's Spring and Autumn period, the Great Wall was built to protect the country against foreign invasions and provide security. Yet even great walls could not guarantee lasting peace. They were breached, and people and animals passed through them. The only everlasting Rock that cannot be destroyed is God, and Jesus Christ is that Rock. Those who build their houses upon Him have no reason to fear, even when rain falls and floods rise. God desires to give peace to His people, and therefore He offers peace as a greeting. After His resurrection, Jesus greeted His disciples with words of peace whenever He met them. Jesus took on a human body like ours, yet He was without sin. He suffered the punishment and death that our sins deserved, dying in our place. But He conquered death and rose again. Neither the Jewish authorities nor the power of Rome could prevent His resurrection, for He possesses eternal power that transcends every earthly authority. Those who take hold of His hand and depend upon Him can possess a peace that remains unshaken, even when confronted by forces as terrifying as a storm of death. Jesus knew that He would soon be arrested, tortured, and put to death. Yet He spoke words of peace to His disciples, who were overwhelmed by fear: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you” (John 14:27). Jesus is the King of Peace, and He gives perfect peace to those who trust in Him. Even when difficulties and anxieties come into my life, my soul can remain quiet and peaceful, like a weaned child resting in its mother's arms. As I look upon the face of my Lord, I can confess that my soul is still and at peace, and there I find true peace and happiness.
