Amnesia: The Loss of Memor
Amnesia: The Loss of Memory
Amnesia: The Loss of Memory
When going out, we sometimes forget where we put our wallet or keys and search here and there for them. This kind of forgetfulness can happen to anyone, regardless of age, when we are careless or distracted. A decline in memory, on the other hand, may cause us to have difficulty remembering people's names or telephone numbers, or to forget which medication to take and when. We tend to regard this as something that happens as we grow older.
More serious memory loss may become apparent when we meet someone or engage in conversation. We may begin by kindly asking how the other person is doing, but then repeat the same question every ten seconds. We may remember things that happened long ago while forgetting events that took place only recently. When memory loss progresses to severe dementia, the difficulties become much greater. A person may forget the names of friends, the familiar roads he has traveled for years, and even the faces of family members. In the past, people sometimes referred to this condition as senility. As the condition progresses, life becomes increasingly difficult, and it may be one of the saddest realities of human existence.
Memory, therefore, is truly important. Remembering good things can bring happiness both to ourselves and to others. For this reason, it is helpful to refresh our memories by recalling and repeating those things we should remember.
The book of Deuteronomy is often understood as a repetition of the Law. Through Moses, God urged His people to hear, read, and remember His Law repeatedly. In Deuteronomy 8, Moses repeatedly reminds them not to forget but to remember.
The Israelites had lived in Egypt for four hundred years, suffering as slaves and crying out for deliverance. God raised up Moses to lead them out of bondage and set them on their journey through the wilderness toward the Promised Land. Along the way, God repeatedly gave them His commandments, laws, and regulations, teaching them how they were to live in their new land. He urged them not to forget these instructions but to remember and obey them.
When people enter a good land and begin to enjoy a prosperous life, they naturally tend to forget the hardships of the past. Yet God commanded the Israelites to remember the days when they suffered as slaves in Egypt. By remembering their former suffering, they would be more grateful that God had intervened to deliver them and had given them the freedom and prosperity they now enjoyed. When their herds and flocks increased and their fields produced abundant harvests in the Promised Land, they were to remember God's great blessings and praise Him.
They might have claimed that their own strength had enabled them to raise livestock and cultivate the land. But God told them to remember that it was He who had given them the wisdom and ability to do these things.
The Ten Commandments, a summary of God's Law, teach the Israelites to remember God and His mighty works, never forgetting what He has done for them. They also instruct them to remember and obey the principles by which they are to live with one another as God's people. One of the greatest wrongs a person can commit before God is to forget Him. Therefore, every seven days, on the Sabbath, the people gathered together to hear again about God and His works, keeping these things alive in their memory.
God has given us the capacity to remember and has provided ways to help us keep His works in mind. Yet He does not want us to function like artificial intelligence, merely storing and repeating information. He wants us, as persons with hearts and wills of our own, to remember willingly what He has done and to praise Him with grateful hearts.
Unlike the Israelites in the wilderness, we have received salvation through the blood shed by Jesus, the Son of God, who redeemed us from our sins. Therefore, we should always remember His saving work and give thanks to Him. To this end, we gather together every Sunday to read and hear again what He has done for us. By repeatedly hearing and remembering the gospel, we strengthen our memory of His grace and join in praising God. In this way, we must guard against a spiritual loss of memory.
The Israelites provide a warning for us. After entering their new land and enjoying abundance and prosperity, they forgot the God who had delivered them and eventually encountered many hardships. Their experience serves as a mirror for our own lives today. Even when we enjoy prosperity, we must never forget that the source of our abilities and strength is the Lord God, and that our very lives are sustained by the grace of Jesus Christ, our Savior.
May we continually recall these truths, remember them again and again, and praise God with thankful hearts. In doing so, may we overcome spiritual forgetfulness and continue to enjoy the grace and blessings of God throughout our lives.
