Which Clothes?
Which Clothes?
Which Clothes?
What should we wear when going to work, attending church, or meeting friends? As members of a minority living in American society, what we choose to wear is a personal decision that each of us must make.
After preaching the gospel in Ephesus, Paul encouraged the believers to remain faithful to what they had heard, seen, and learned (Ephesians 4). The people of Ephesus took pride in their goddess Artemis, claiming that her image had fallen from heaven. They enjoyed a lifestyle filled with theater, games, and worldly pleasures in the great amphitheater. The small community of Christians, however, was called to live as new people, instructed and trained in the truth. Yet they faced constant temptations from the surrounding culture, its pleasures, and its desires. Living differently from those around them could invite ridicule and exclusion. As a result, some were tempted to follow the majority and return to their former way of life.
These believers had learned the truth that is in Jesus. Human knowledge changes, and people's opinions change as well. Even the views of parents and children can differ. But Jesus is the truth and the life. He does not change, and His truth continues to work in our lives in every generation. The word of the God of Abraham was true in the days of Jesus, and it remains equally true for us today. One unchanging truth is that every human being is a sinner, subject to judgment and death, but through Jesus we receive forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life. This is the truth Jesus testified to before Pilate, the very man who judged Him. It remains unchanged even today, offering us freedom in a constantly changing society.
When we live in the truth, we put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. People express something about themselves through the clothes they wear. Koreans have traditionally been called the "white-clad people" because of their love for white clothing. They took care to keep their white garments clean and unstained. Christians, too, are people set apart from the rest of the world. We are called to put on a new garment, one created in holiness—the garment of Christ Himself. Not only in Ephesus but in every society, those who receive Jesus into their lives become new people, different from who they were before, people who resemble Jesus and are clothed with Him. Just as clothing can reveal a person's position and dignity, those who wear the garment of Jesus reveal wherever they go that they belong to Him, and their lives should reflect that identity.
During the busy evening rush hour, people hurried off the train and made their way home. Along the street, an elderly woman was selling fruit. As people rushed past, someone accidentally struck her small fruit stand, scattering the fruit across the ground. Everyone continued on their way, but one person stopped and helped the woman, who had difficulty seeing, gather all the fruit and put it back on her stand. The woman asked him, "Are you Jesus?" She explained that she had prayed that morning, asking to meet Jesus that very day.
Helping this elderly woman in her time of need was, in a sense, acting as Jesus' representative. The woman had prayed that she might meet Jesus that day, but perhaps the person who helped her had prayed that morning that God would allow him to be Jesus to someone facing hardship that day. Despite the demands of a busy life, he had taken off the old self-centered garment and put on the new garment that reveals Jesus, a garment that rises above the limitations of time and circumstances.
Whom am I representing through the garment I wear in my life today? If I can represent the Lord Jesus, I will be grateful that my life can bless others, bring joy to the Lord, and become an expression of His love to those around me.
