Even Jesus Not Alone
Even Jesus Not Alone
Even Jesus Did Not Work Alone
There is a Korean saying, Dokbuljanggun, which literally suggests that no one can become a general all by himself. In common usage, however, it describes a self-righteous person who insists that his own ideas are always right and best and refuses to accept the opinions of others. No matter how intelligent or talented a person may be, managing a company requires the help and cooperation of many people. Someone who believes that he has sufficient talent and ability to do everything alone may make decisions and move things forward quickly, but the results will be quite different.
When God, who is sovereign and self-sufficient, created human beings as the final act of creation, He said, "Let us make mankind in our image" (Genesis 1:26). We recognize here the work of the Triune God together. Jesus, the Son of God, came into the world and performed many things beyond human ability, demonstrating that He truly was God. Yet even Jesus did not work alone. He gathered twelve disciples, seventy-two disciples, and many others to work alongside Him. In Mark 6, He called twelve men to be with Him and to share in His work. They traveled together, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of heaven.
What wonderful good news it is to be able to look toward the boundless kingdom of heaven while living in a world full of limitations! At the same time, Jesus set people free from the troubles that afflicted them. Today, we might describe some conditions as mental illness, but in those days many people were believed to be possessed by demons. Tormented by evil spirits, they were unable to live normal and healthy lives. The Lord exercised authority over demons, drove them out, and restored people to their right minds. He also healed people suffering from various diseases so that they could live healthy lives. By driving out demons and healing illnesses, Jesus demonstrated that enjoying wholeness of body, mind, and spirit and living a blessed life is one expression of the kingdom of heaven.
How much could Jesus have accomplished if He had done all these things by Himself? How could He have cared for all the people in so many towns and villages? Jesus chose people to work with Him, trained them, and sent them out. It is surprising that some villages refused to believe or welcome them, but in such cases they simply moved on to other places. Jesus said that the Son of Man would come before they had finished going through all the towns of Israel. This means that their work would not be completed before the Lord's return.
The church today is a community that the Lord has chosen and gathered together. We worship and receive training there. When the benediction is given and we are sent out into the world, we are being commissioned to continue the work that the Lord did. If I am to do the Lord's work, I must receive His strength and power. The Lord must also be pleased to work through me.
With the Lord's love and power, I can live each day. But should I be satisfied simply with living a healthy and blessed life myself, or should I share the Lord's blessings with those I meet as someone sent by Him? This is a choice I must make.
If I belong to the Lord and am His disciple, I must recognize that the work Jesus did is still needed today and that He sends me to continue that work. I may need to join with my family or others as a team, but first and foremost, I must offer myself in prayer so that the Holy Spirit may work alongside me. I must seek to participate in the Lord's work with His heart and pray that God will be pleased to accept and bless my participation.
Just as the Lord did not work alone, neither do I. What a blessing and a reason for gratitude it is to know that the Lord is with me and that there are others who can work alongside me!
