The Hope of All Nations and All People
The Hope of All Nations and All People
The Hope of All Nations and All People
In Dante’s Inferno, the inscription above the gate of Hell reads, “Abandon all hope, you who enter here.” A life without hope is itself like hell; in this sense, hope is what makes life worth living. Because people have hope, they make the bold decision to immigrate to another country. Because they have hope, they endure day after day in an unfamiliar wilderness, live as pioneers, establish a stable life, and gradually expand their horizons.
The American dream, in a nation built by immigrants, is the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness. Through sweat and toil, America achieved these ideals and became the most powerful nation in the world. Today, it holds the hope of sharing these blessings with all the nations of the world.
At one time, people from every corner of the world flocked to Rome, then the capital of the known world, seeking hope. All roads led to Rome, and under Roman rule and institutions, people enjoyed Pax Romana, or Roman peace. Rome became a place that people everywhere admired and longed to reach.
When Paul wrote his letter to the Christians in Rome, he had not yet visited the city. Yet many of the people he mentions in chapter 16 had once lived in various places, received the gospel through Paul’s ministry, and moved to Rome with great hope. Rome had opened its doors and welcomed them. But what good would it do for Rome to welcome them if, after they arrived and established their lives there, they could not welcome one another?
In chapter 15, Paul urges the Christians in Rome to welcome one another because God has welcomed them. Just as settling in a new country takes time and requires patience and encouragement, living as citizens of God’s kingdom in this complicated world does not happen overnight. We must be patient with one another and encourage one another. Just as God has accepted and welcomed us through His Son, Jesus Christ, we are to accept and welcome one another. In this way, we can live in harmony, become one, and offer thanksgiving and praise to God.
Such a Christian community becomes a source of hope and encouragement to people weary from the burdens of complicated lives. The people of many nations living in Rome longed for this very thing: to experience God’s love and live together in harmony, united in Christ. Becoming a citizen of a nation is important, but giving and receiving love is what truly gives people hope. This is why the church is established and grows.
It is God who has welcomed us as one people, regardless of our backgrounds or social status. Therefore, we exalt the name of the Lord and give Him thanks. Moreover, we praise Him because Jesus, the Son of God, died in our place, bearing the punishment for our sins, and forgave us and welcomed us as His own people, even though we were dead in our trespasses and sins.
Rome worshiped its emperor as a god and enjoyed a measure of peace. Yet conflicts over power and divisions arose, the empire fell into turmoil, and the city was engulfed in flames. The emperor began to regard Christians who worshiped God as traitors to the empire and persecuted them, but the problems remained unresolved.
Emperor Constantine came to believe that the cross he had seen in a vision and Jesus Christ Himself were his hope. When he bowed before Christ and acknowledged Him as Lord, a new era began for the empire.
America welcomed people of many races and ethnic groups, expecting that everyone who entered the American melting pot would blend together and become one. The result, however, has been more like a salad bowl: each group retains its own identity and expresses its distinctive characteristics. Although laws provide order, confusion and division continue to exist.
The hope of all people lies in accepting and welcoming one another. This becomes possible through the universal love of God and in Jesus Christ. There was a time when America sent missionaries to nations throughout the world to proclaim God’s love and the gift of life. Today, however, America has become an increasingly diverse and secularized nation. The hope for its renewal lies in Christian immigrants restoring the nation through their faith.
Without God, a hell without hope takes shape. But when we know and worship the God who unites people of every lineage and nation into one, beautiful days of life can dawn. Therefore, we affirm that the Lord Jesus Christ is the hope of all nations and all people, and we place our hope in living according to His example and following Him.
