The Source of Great Strength
The Source of Great Strength
The Source of Great Strength
When we watch sumo wrestling in Japan, which is comparable to ssireum, the traditional Korean form of wrestling, we cannot help but be amazed. Two imposing men, looking like masses of powerful muscles, face each other in the ring, pushing and pulling as they test their strength. Their power is so impressive that I feel I would be pushed aside before I could even approach and try to push one of them. Where does such great strength come from? We might say it comes from their muscles, but they maintain and develop their strength through constant training, learning to keep their balance, avoid falling, and overcome their opponents.
In Mark 1, Jesus spends the day, from early morning until evening, continually meeting the needs of many people. He heals numerous sick people, including Peter's mother-in-law, who is suffering from a fever. He cleanses a man with leprosy, a disease that was considered incurable at the time, and drives out demons from those who are tormented by them, enabling them to live healthy and restored lives. Even in the evening, people gather at the door of the house where He is staying. Early the next morning, people come looking for Him again.
When the disciples go to find Jesus early in the morning, He is nowhere to be found. He has gone out to a solitary place, while it is still dark, to pray. Jesus prays not only in the early morning but also at other times, day and night. His life is continually connected to prayer. Prayer is a way of communicating with God and receiving strength through fellowship with Him and His Word. The Father strengthens His Son so that He can carry out the Father's work. Jesus is empowered not only to heal physical illnesses but also to exercise authority over nature and to drive out demons in spiritual warfare. The strength of Jesus comes from God the Father.
David was the youngest son of Jesse and a shepherd who tended his father's sheep. When Samuel was sent to Jesse's household to anoint one of his sons as king, Jesse presented his sons for consideration but did not even think to call David, who seemed so insignificant. Yet this young shepherd eventually stood face-to-face with Goliath, the Philistine champion who had come to threaten Israel.
David appeared carrying a shepherd's staff and was nothing more than an object of ridicule in Goliath's eyes. Nevertheless, David boldly declared to his enemy, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied." David hurled a stone from his sling, struck Goliath on the forehead, and brought him down. He then took Goliath's own sword, cut off his head, and led Israel to victory.
The secret behind David's rise to kingship and his place as one of Israel's greatest kings was his faith in God and his persistent life of prayer. God never turns away those who trust in Him and seek Him. He helps and protects them. This is a truth demonstrated throughout history.
During my ministry, I knew a man who had earned a Ph.D. in physics, yet no one would hire him. In order to find employment, he listed his master's degree rather than his doctorate on his résumé. I also heard of a physics professor who told his graduate students at the end of a semester that everything they had studied that term had become obsolete. A new discovery had just been announced that overturned the theories they had learned. Such experiences reveal the limitations of academic knowledge, just as they reveal the limitations of material wealth and human prestige, however impressive they may appear.
God, however, is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He neither slumbers nor sleeps but remains ever watchful, helping us with His wisdom and power. Therefore, whoever looks to the Lord in prayer and asks for His help will receive strength and wisdom from Him.
Even the United States, the world's most powerful nation, faces many challenges and has seen its leaders turn to God in prayer at the White House. If Jesus, the Son of God, prayed in the early hours of the morning to sustain His demanding daily life and ministry, how can we, ordinary people with our many problems, afford to neglect prayer?
