여러가지 시험을 통하여 Through Many Kinds of Trials 한국은 이전 많은 시험을 겪었다. 가난이 제일 큰 것이다. 먹을 것이 없어 초근목피로 연명하고 먹고 살기 위하여 다른 나라로 이주하기도 하였다. 가난만 아니라 많은 질병으로 동리가 없어질 정도가 되기도 하였다. 전쟁은 큰 시련이다. 중국 일본 러시아 등 이웃 나라들이 침략하고 민주 공산 남북 진영의 전쟁이 아직도 끝나지 않는 휴전상태에 있다. 이런 시험과 고난 속에서 좋은 지도자가 나와 우리도 잘 살 수 있다는 구호를 걸고 새로운 나라 건설을 위해 마음과 생활습관을 바꾸어 70년이 지난 오늘 세계 가장 가난하던 나라에서 부강 10대국에 들어가게 된 것은 기적이라 하지만 하나님이 도우신 궤도라 생각이 된다. 야고보 1장에서 너희가 여러가지 시험을 만나거든 온전히 기쁘게 여기라 권한다. 그들에게는 믿음으로 인한 시련이 있었다. 예수 믿음으로 미움과 조롱 박해를 당하였다. 그들을 격려하며 시험을 참는 자가 복되다고 하며 시험은 인내를 가져오고 인내를 하면 온전하고 구비한 인격이 된다고 한다. 시험을 참고 이기는 사람이 마지막에 이르는 것은 생명의 면류관을 얻을 것이라는 것이다. 그 실례가 우리 주 예수님이다. 그는 시험과 고난을 당하기 위하여 오셨다. 그의 사역은 광야의 시험으로 시작되고 그의 공생애는 시험과 고난을 인내하며 참으신 것이다. 그는 매를 맞고 침 뱉음을 당하고 가장 극심한 고통의 십자가에 달리는 시험을 겪고 무덤에 묻혔지만 하나님은 그를 부활시키고 우리의 구주가 되게 하실 뿐 아니라 그 영광의 자리에 이르기 위한 첫 단계가 시험을 참고 인내하는 것을 보여주신 것이다. 내가 미국생활을 하며 여러가지 어려운 일들을 체험한 것이 이민으로 고생하는 교인들을 위로하고 인내하게 하는 기초가 된 것을 감사한다. 어려움은 어려움이라 견디기가 쉽지 않다. 그때마다 주를 향하여 기도하며 지혜와 도움을 구하면 주께서 힘주시고 이길 수 있게 하시니 주는 선하고 의로우시며 그의 손에 면류관을 드시고 우리를 격려하며 힘을 더하여 주시니 감사함으로 주를 의지하고 살아간다. 지금도 같은 형편에서 나는 더욱 주를 바라보며 그를 의지하며 주의 나라를 기다린다. Through Many Kinds of Trials Korea has gone through many kinds of trials throughout its history. Poverty was perhaps the greatest of them all. There was a time when people had so little to eat that they had to survive on roots and wild plants. Many even left their homeland and immigrated to other countries simply to make a living. Poverty was not the only hardship. Various diseases became so severe that entire villages were sometimes devastated. War is another great trial. Korea was invaded by neighboring countries such as China, Japan, and Russia, and the Korean War divided the nation into the democratic South and the communist North. Even today, the war has not officially ended; the two sides remain in an armistice. Yet, through these trials and hardships, good leaders emerged and called the people to believe, “We too can live well.” They encouraged the nation to change its way of thinking and its habits of life in order to build a new country. Seventy years later, Korea has risen from being one of the poorest countries in the world to becoming one of the world’s ten major economic powers. Some call this a miracle, and I believe it is indeed a miracle—but I also believe it has been a journey on which God has helped and guided us. James 1 encourages us, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.” The early Christians experienced trials because of their faith. Because they believed in Jesus, they suffered hatred, ridicule, and persecution. James encouraged them, saying that those who endure trials are blessed. Trials produce perseverance, and perseverance leads to maturity, making a person complete and lacking nothing. Those who endure and overcome trials will ultimately receive the crown of life. The greatest example is our Lord Jesus Christ Himself. He came into the world to experience trials and suffering. His ministry began with His temptation in the wilderness, and throughout His earthly ministry He endured trial and suffering with patience. He was beaten and spit upon. He endured the most severe suffering on the cross and was laid in a tomb. Yet God raised Him from the dead and made Him our Savior. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus showed us that enduring trials with patience is the first step toward the glory God has prepared for us. I am thankful that the many difficulties I experienced during my life in America became a foundation for comforting and encouraging the church members who were struggling as immigrants. Those experiences helped me understand their hardships and encourage them to persevere. Hardships are still hardships, and they are never easy to endure. But whenever difficulties come, I turn to the Lord in prayer and ask Him for wisdom and help. He gives me strength and enables me to overcome. The Lord is good and righteous. He holds the crown in His hand, encourages us, and gives us renewed strength. Therefore, I continue to depend upon Him and live with thanksgiving. Even now, in the circumstances in which I find myself, I look to the Lord all the more, depend upon Him, and wait for His kingdom.
