주를 높이고 찬양하자 Honor and Praise the LORD 오늘은 9.11 이 발생하고 25년이 되는 날이다. 2001년 그날 아침나는 시카고 한미교회 목사로 있으며 부목사들과 함께 그 소식을 듣고 놀라움과 두려움으로 앉아 서로를 바라보며 대화하고 기도하였다. 세계 무역의 상징이던 쌍둥이 빌딩이 무너지고 3천명 이상이 죽임을 당한 테러의 계획된 집단 만행으로 새로운 테러와의 전쟁이 시작되었다. 그 자리는 그후 그라운드 제로가 되고 자유의 탑이 세워지고 죽은 자의 이름이 새기고 가슴에 기억하는 장소가 되었다. 미국 역사에서 어느 면으로 미국 역사에서 슬프게도 준비 없는 형편이 당하는 비극임을 알고 새롭게 테러에 대비하고 무너진 파괴를 재건의 기회로 만드는 힘을 보여주고 미국은 더욱 강한 나라로 일어나고 트럼프 시대인 지금은 누구도 감히 도발할 수 없는 초강대국으로 자리하고 있다. 세계 부강의 상징 쌍둥이 탑의 파괴와 3천명의 생명 손실 위에 사람이 감히 어쩔 수 없는 새로운 미국이 세워지게 된 것은 미국과 역사를 다스리는 하나님의 일이라 보며 우리는 그를 높이고 찬양하게 된다. 이런 일은 사람에게 일어나며 이스라엘의 성군 다윗에게도 일어났기에 그는 시편 30편에서 여호와를 높이고 찬양한다고 노래한다. 그는 목동으로 어린 시절을 지나며 양들이 위기를 당하는 것을 보면 버려두거나 도망하지 않았다. 곰이나 사자가 나타나 양을 해치거나 물고 가면 그는 추적하여 곰이나 사자의 입을 벌리거나 찢어 양을 구하였다고 하며 이스라엘과 하나님을 모욕하는 블레셋 장군 골리앗을 여호와의 이름으로 제거하였다. 그가 왕이 되었지만 많은 어려움이 있었다. 어려움에서 쓰러지면 원수들이 기뻐할 것이지만 하나님께서 끌어내어 주셨다고 고백하고 주를 높인다. 그는 약함과 질병, 슬픔과 고뇌가 있고 원수에게 쫓기어 도망하기도 하였다. 무엇이 곰이나 사자보다 더 강하고 무서울까? 그는 어느 때나 하나님께 부르짖고 도움을 요청하였다. 일이 잘되어 만족스럽고 평안할 때 하나님을 찬양하는 것과는 다른 마음의 간절함과 진실함이 있다. 주께서 그를 산과 같이 든든히 세우셨지만 주의 얼굴을 가리우면 그의 영혼은 스올에 내려가고 무덤에 묻히는 것을 느끼며 주께 부르짖고 주의 응답으로 구원을 받는다. 그는 저녁에는 슬픔이 있어도 아침에는 기쁨이 오고 슬픔이 변하여 춤이 되게 하고 재 옷을 벗기고 기쁨의 화관을 씌워 주시는 하나님을 높이며 주의 은혜를 찬양하였다. 이런 일은 다윗에게만 아니라 주의 사랑을 입는 모든 사람에게 일어난다. 나는 평생 하나님이 자기가 정한 길로 나를 인도하시고 위험에서 구하며 모든 것을 채워 주셨음을 안다. 오늘 아침 잠에서 깨며 주를 찬양한 것은 나의 삶의 큰 부분만 아니라 하루 계획과 실천 등 모든 세밀한 부분까지 주께서 인도하고 계신다는 것을 깨닫는다. 내가 잠 잘 때나 일어날 때나 활동할 때나 쉴 때나 언제나 함께 하신다. 육체와 마음과 정신, 영혼의 어디에나 고통이 있을 때 나는 더욱 간절하게 주를 찾는 기회가 되도록 주께서 이들을 허락하는 것이라 또한 주를 찬양한다. 내가 당시 약이 없다는 씽글즈 대상포진이라는 질병으로 한 달 동안 가장 심한 통증을 느끼며 고생하며 부르짖자 주께서는 주와 맺은 약속을 기억하도록 일깨워 주시며 살아 있는 동안 주의 사랑을 나누는 일로 인도하시고 내 몸과 마음의 모든 아픔의 덩어리를 을 치유하여 제거하시고 참 자유를 내게 허락하셨다. 그 후에도 항상 사랑과 신실함으로 나의 매일 삶을 인도하시는 여호와 하나님, 주 예수님을 높이고 찬양하며 감사한다. Honor and Praise the LORD Today marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. On that morning in 2001, I was serving as the pastor of the Korean-American Church of Chicago. Together with the associate pastors, I heard the shocking news. We sat together in astonishment and fear, looking at one another, talking and praying. The Twin Towers, symbols of world trade, had collapsed, and more than 3,000 people were killed in a planned act of terrorism. Thus began a new war against terrorism. The site later became known as Ground Zero. The Freedom Tower was built there, and the names of those who died were engraved as a lasting memorial, a place where their lives would forever be remembered in our hearts. In one sense, this tragedy revealed how tragically unprepared America had been for such an attack. Yet America demonstrated the strength to prepare anew against terrorism and to turn destruction into an opportunity for rebuilding. The nation rose again, stronger than before. And now, in the era of President Trump, America stands as a superpower that no one would easily dare to challenge. The destruction of the Twin Towers, symbols of America's economic prosperity, and the loss of more than 3,000 lives became the foundation upon which a new and stronger America was built—something beyond what human beings alone could accomplish. I see this as the work of God, who governs America and the course of history. Therefore, we honor Him and praise Him. Such things happen in the lives of people as well. They happened even to David, the great king of Israel. That is why, in Psalm 30, David sings, “I will exalt You, LORD, and praise You.” As a young shepherd, David never abandoned his sheep or ran away when they were in danger. When a bear or a lion came to attack or carry away one of his sheep, he pursued it, seized it, and rescued the sheep from its mouth. Later, when Goliath, the Philistine champion who mocked Israel and the name of God, stood before him, David confronted him in the name of the LORD and defeated him. Even after David became king, he experienced many difficulties. When he fell into trouble, his enemies would rejoice, but David confessed that the LORD lifted him up and rescued him. Therefore, he exalted the LORD. David experienced weakness, sickness, sorrow, and anguish. He was pursued by his enemies and forced to flee for his life. What could be stronger or more frightening than a bear or a lion? Yet whatever the danger, David cried out to God and asked Him for help. There is something different in the heart of a person who cries out to God in desperate need. It is different from praising God when everything is going well, when life is comfortable and peaceful. In suffering, praise comes from a deeper place of earnestness and truth. The LORD had established David securely, as though he were standing on a strong mountain. Yet when God hid His face, David felt as though his soul were descending into Sheol, as though he were going down into the grave. So he cried out to the LORD, and through the LORD's answer he was saved. David declares that though there may be weeping in the evening, joy comes in the morning. God turns sorrow into dancing. He removes the garment of mourning and clothes His people with joy. For this reason, David exalts God and praises Him for His unfailing grace. And such things do not happen only to David. They happen to all who are loved by the LORD. Throughout my life, I have come to know that God has guided me along the path He prepared for me, protected me from danger, and provided everything I needed. This morning, when I awoke and praised the LORD, I realized once again that He is guiding not only the major parts of my life but also every small detail—even my plans for each day and the way I carry them out. Whether I am sleeping or waking, active or resting, He is always with me. Whenever I experience pain in my body, heart, mind, or spirit, I also praise the LORD because I believe He can use even those painful experiences as opportunities for me to seek Him more earnestly. There was a time when I suffered from shingles, at a time when there was no effective medicine available to me. For one month, I experienced some of the most severe pain of my life. As I cried out to the LORD in my suffering, He reminded me of the promises I had made with Him. He awakened me to the calling to share His love with others for as long as I live. He healed and removed the deep burdens of pain in my body and heart and granted me true freedom. Since then, the LORD God and my Lord Jesus Christ have continued to guide my daily life with love and faithfulness. Therefore, I honor and praise the LORD. I give thanks to Him, because He is always with me, always faithful, always guiding me, and always providing what I need. Honor and praise the LORD!
