착각에서 벗어나다 Breaking Free from Misconceptions 오늘의 양식에서 새들이 유리창에 부딪혀 죽는 수가 일년에 10억 이상이 된다다고 하니 놀라운 정보다. 그들은 창에 비친 나무를 보며 먹을 거리나 자기 둥지를 만들 재료로 착각하고 또는 나타난 자기의 그림자를 자기를 막는 적대자로 알고 싸우려는 자세로 돌격하여 결국 자기를 죽게 하는 것이라 한다 나이 들어 거의 전체가 백인으로 된 공동체인 이곳에 와서 살며 미국 생활 52년 처음으로 이런 환경에서 만나는 사람은 대개가 백인이요 전체가 영어로만 소통한다. 활동 클래스에 가면 지도자가 말하는 내용을 완전하게 다 이해할 수 없기에 나의 부족을 많이 느낄 뿐 아니라 몸은 약하고 피곤함을 쉽게 느끼며 시력저하로 제대로 파악하지 못하며 나는 아무 것도 할 수 없다는 자궤감을 가질 때가 많다. 그러나 주를 바라보며 새 힘을 얻어 살고 있다. 때로는 그동안의 경험이나 삶을 통하여 얻은 지식과 지혜가 옳다고 생각하고 그것을 고집하고 다른 이를 잘못되었다고 할 때가 많지만 이것도 착각이다. 사람마다 생각이나 방식이 다를 수가 있지만 모두 각자 자기 대로의 삶의 방식이 있고 그것이 바르다고 생각한다. 중요한 것은 다른 것이 틀린 것은 아니라는 사실을 받아들이고 서로 용납하는 것이 지혜라 본다. 가장 큰 것은 사람은 누구나 죽는다는 사실이다. 죽으면 어떻게 되는가 하는 생각이 다르다. 죽으면 그만이다, 죽음 이후는 알지 못한다. 죽음 이후는 걱정하지 않는다 등을 말하며 마음대로 자기 좋은 대로 사는 자가 많다. 어느 면에 새가 창에 부딪쳐 죽는 것 같은 착각이다. 하나님의 말씀은 확실하게 길을 보여준다. 영원한 생명의 길과 죽음의 길이 있다. 천국과 지옥의 길은 살아 있는 동안 결정하는 것이다. 내가 길이요 진리요 생명이라 하신 하나님의 아들 예수님만이 참 생명의 길이요 그를 믿고 따르는 것이 인생의 지혜요 명철이다. 예수님이 없다면 세상의 부요함이나 명예 지위가 그를 죽지 않게 할 수 없고 영생으로 인도하지 못한다. 최근 인터넷이 발달하고 많은 계정을 가지지만 모두가 패스워드라는 것이 있다 들어가는 비밀 번호다. 글자 하나 부호 하나가 달라도 통하지 않는다. 영원한 생명과 천국에 들어가는 비밀번호는 예수님 하나다. 누구에게나 주어진 이 비밀번호를 가지는 것이 가장 큰 축복이라 하나님을 찬양하며 영원히 그와 함께 그 앞에서 살 것을 기대하며 설레는 마음이다. Breaking Free from Misconceptions In today’s devotional reading, I came across a surprising piece of information: more than one billion birds die each year by flying into windows. They see the reflection of trees in the glass and mistake them for real trees, perhaps thinking they are places to find food or materials for building their nests. At other times, they see their own reflection and mistake it for a hostile bird blocking their way. They then charge at it as if preparing to fight, only to injure or kill themselves in the end. As I have grown older and come to live in this community, which is made up almost entirely of Caucasians, I find myself in an environment very different from what I have known during my 52 years of life in America. Most of the people I meet here are white, and communication is entirely in English. When I attend activity classes, I cannot always fully understand everything the instructor says. This makes me keenly aware of my limitations. My body is weaker than it once was, I become tired easily, and because of declining eyesight, I sometimes cannot understand or see things as clearly as I would like. At such times, I often feel discouraged and think, “There is nothing I can do anymore.” Yet I look to the Lord and receive new strength from Him, and I continue to live. Sometimes we also fall into another kind of misconception. Through our experiences and the knowledge and wisdom we have gained throughout life, we may become convinced that our way of thinking is right. We may insist on our own opinions and conclude that others are wrong. But this, too, can be a misconception. People may think differently and live in different ways. Each person has his or her own way of living and often believes that it is the right way. Wisdom is found in recognizing that being different does not necessarily mean being wrong, and in learning to accept and respect one another. Yet there is one great reality that no one can escape: everyone will die. People have many different ideas about what happens after death. Some say, “When you die, that is the end.” Others say, “We do not know what comes after death,” or “I do not worry about what happens after death.” Many simply live as they please, according to what seems right in their own eyes. In a sense, this is like the bird flying into the window because of a false perception. The bird does not recognize the reality in front of it, and its mistaken understanding leads to its death. But God’s Word clearly shows us the way. There are two paths: the path of eternal life and the path of death. The destination of heaven or hell is determined while we are still alive. Jesus, the Son of God, said, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” He alone is the true way to life. To believe in Him and follow Him is the wisdom and understanding that we need in this life. Without Jesus, no amount of wealth, honor, or social position can keep a person from death, nor can any of these things lead a person to eternal life. In recent years, the Internet has developed tremendously, and many of us have numerous accounts. Yet every account requires a password—a secret code that allows us to enter. If even one letter or one symbol is different, the password will not work. In the same way, the password for entering eternal life and the kingdom of heaven is Jesus alone. This password is not something reserved for a select few. It is offered to everyone. To receive and possess this gift is the greatest blessing of all. Therefore, I praise God with a grateful heart and look forward with joyful anticipation to living with Him forever, standing in His presence and worshiping Him throughout eternity.
