With Unchanging Love

With Unchanging Love There is a Korean saying, jorimogae (朝令暮改), which means issuing an order in the morning and changing it in the evening. Such things happen in the course of history and in everyday life. When British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher announced a tax policy and faced strong opposition from the people, she withdrew it. Parents may tell their daughter, as she enters college, not to think about making friends but to concentrate on her studies. Then, the following semester, they may encourage her to make friends and find someone good. These examples show that human words and thoughts are imperfect and can change. Someone who was a friend yesterday may become distant today, while someone we kept at a distance today may become our friend tomorrow. God, however, is different from us. As Psalm 92 declares, He loves us yesterday, today, and always with His unfailing love and faithfulness. We praise Him because His works are great and His thoughts toward us are profound. The psalm does not describe specific deeds, but it assures us that when we face danger surrounded by enemies, God comes to our rescue. King Hezekiah was surrounded by the Assyrian army and threatened with surrender. Yet he prayed and looked to the Lord. During the night, 185,000 enemy soldiers died, and in the morning they were found dead. Elisha, the man of God, knew the king of Aram's military plans and informed the king of Israel, enabling him to remain prepared. The king of Aram, therefore, sought to capture Elisha and surrounded the city of Dothan, where he was staying. When Elisha's servant saw the enemy forces, he was terrified. But Elisha prayed that the Lord would open his servant's eyes, and the servant saw that the mountain was filled with horses and chariots of fire from God, surrounding the Aramean army. When we face danger, God performs mighty works to help us. Yet He is also at work in times of peace. Psalm 92 tells us that the righteous flourish like palm trees and grow like the cedars of Lebanon. Planted in the house of God, they are secure. Even in old age, they remain strong, bearing fruit and staying fresh and vigorous like the young. God never changes. He is always with us in love and performs great works on our behalf. A few years ago, God tenderly approached my wife and told her, "Jong-hyung is My beloved son." I had known that I was a son loved by God, but hearing those words directly made me reflect on the love of my heavenly Father throughout my life. God's mercy and faithfulness toward me have become even more personal and profound than the psalmist describes. Beginning when I was five years old, God spoke to me at crossroads where I had to make decisions about my future and in times of crisis. While I was preparing to enter law school, He told me to complete my legal studies and become a judge, entrusting the work of judgment to Him, while I devoted myself to sharing His love. When I was suffering from a life-threatening illness, He told me that I would live and proclaim the work He was doing. God did not merely speak these words; He brought them to fulfillment. He personally guided me, going ahead of me, opening the way, and leading me forward. Even this condominium was a place He chose for me. He brought me here so that I could dedicate this home to Him as Bethel, the house of God, and live with joy in His dwelling. As I look back on the journey that has brought me here, I see that everything has been the work of my merciful and faithful God. I wholeheartedly praise Him and give Him thanks. His love is not confined to a particular season of my life. Then and now, day and night, He has remained with me in unchanging love. After sixty-one years of marriage, I have experienced the ups and downs of human love. Yet God's love has remained the same from the beginning until now. I am grateful for His love alone, and I consider it a blessing to love Him and devote myself ever more fully to Him.
