Why Do You Hate Me?

Why Do You Hate Me? Why Are You Persecuting Me? The young man Saul regarded those who believed in and proclaimed Jesus, who had been crucified on charges of blasphemy by the religious leaders of Jerusalem, as heretics who opposed Jewish tradition and faith. As an elite student educated under Gamaliel, one of Jerusalem’s leading religious teachers, Saul considered those who proclaimed Jesus to be heretics who must be eliminated. In his youthful zeal, he was on his way to Damascus, carrying official letters authorizing him to arrest the followers of this heresy. He traveled with anger and passion. Although it was broad daylight, a light brighter than the sun suddenly shone upon him. His eyes were blinded, and he fell to the ground. He heard a voice calling, “Saul, Saul,” and asked, “Who are you?” The answer came, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Why are you persecuting Me?” Saul had hated and persecuted those who believed in Jesus, but Jesus declared that He Himself was being persecuted. In doing so, He revealed that He and those who believe in Him are one. Jesus had told His disciples earlier, “Whoever welcomes you welcomes Me, and whoever hates you hates Me.” He identified Himself with His disciples and sent them out to proclaim the gospel. When a nation sends an ambassador to another country, welcoming that ambassador means welcoming the nation he represents. Rejecting the ambassador means rejecting his nation, and such rejection can even lead to war. An ambassador represents his country and demonstrates that he belongs to, and stands in unity with, the nation he serves. Saul, who had persecuted those who believed in Jesus, fell before the Lord and surrendered. From then on, he followed Jesus’ commands. Previously, he had acted according to the law and obeyed the orders of religious leaders. Now he was taken into the service of the very Jesus he had intended to eliminate. Saul, whose name means “asked for” or “prayed for,” came to be known as Paul, and he acknowledged Jesus as his Lord. He became His servant, His ambassador. As the Lord’s ambassador, Paul lived wherever he was to make known the One who had sent him. At the same time, he experienced the joy of participating in the Lord’s work. He proclaimed the gospel throughout Asia Minor and parts of Europe, enduring persecution and suffering. Yet he rejoiced in sharing the sufferings of the Lord and regarded this as a privilege. Through his ministry, he laid the foundation for the spread of the gospel throughout the world. The man who had intended to destroy the followers of Jesus as heretics was transformed by Jesus Himself and commissioned to do His work. This is not merely a story or an imagined possibility. It is an event recorded in history. The polytheistic Roman Empire persecuted Christians severely, blaming their belief in one God for the calamities that befell the empire. Both Peter and Paul were martyred in Rome. Yet, before long, Constantine, who challenged the imperial order and eventually became emperor, came to embrace Christianity. He granted Christianity legal recognition, and eventually it became the official religion of the Roman Empire. The very empire that had persecuted Jesus and His followers became a center of Christianity until the Reformation. Afterward, Rome remained the headquarters of the Catholic Church, playing a significant role in the worldwide spread of Christianity. How could such a transformation take place? Who brought it about? It was Jesus, the One who asks, “Why are you persecuting Me?” Even today, there are countries where crosses are removed, churches are closed, and Christians are sent to forced-labor or detention camps. Even in the free world, there are forces that oppose the gospel in various ways. To those who persecute His people, Jesus still asks, “Why are you persecuting Me?” We do not know how long the Lord will wait. But just as He brought transformation to Saul and to Rome, I believe the time will come when He turns those who oppose Him toward Himself. Looking forward to that day, we will pray, endure patiently, and keep our eyes on the Lord. If we suffer because we believe in Him, let us remember that the Lord Himself is suffering with us. May this truth bring us comfort and strength, and may we give thanks to the Lord and praise His name.
