How To This Place
How To This Place
How To This Place
At some point in life, when people reach the height of their achievements, they begin to reflect on how they came to be where they are. Some attribute their success to their own abilities and efforts, the support of their parents, the teaching of their teachers, the cooperation of their friends, or simply good fortune.
David, having reached the pinnacle of his life, became king of Israel and established Jerusalem as his capital. He wanted to govern the nation in peace and stability. Knowing that he could not accomplish this alone, he appointed officials to assist him in domestic affairs and military leaders to provide national defense. Yet he felt that even this was not enough. He brought the ark of the LORD God to Jerusalem. The ark held the testimony of God's covenant and represented His holy presence among His people. By bringing it to Jerusalem, David expressed his conviction that God must be present with him in governing the nation.
In 1 Chronicles 16, David placed the ark in the tent he had prepared, offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to God, and appointed Levites to minister before the ark and musicians to praise the LORD. Then David himself offered thanksgiving and praise to God before the people.
David spoke of God's mighty works, His wonders, and His covenant. God had repeatedly confirmed the same covenant to three generations—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He promised to give them the land of Canaan, which was already densely populated in those days. Although they were few in number and wandered from place to place, God protected and guided them, allowing no one to harm them. In time, they became a great nation, received the promised land, established a kingdom, and saw David become their king.
David recognized that Israel's rise as a nation and his own position as king were entirely the result of God's grace. Therefore, he gave thanks and praise to the LORD. God had given them not only the land but also His covenant, statutes, and laws, making it known to the world that they were His people, called to live according to His laws rather than merely the laws of the land. David praised God's greatness and power. He proclaimed that the LORD had made the heavens and ruled over everything beneath them. Unlike the many gods worshiped by the surrounding nations, the LORD alone was the one true God, worthy of all honor and praise.
Israel was surrounded by many powerful nations, yet its people enjoyed security and prosperity solely through God's grace. David himself had been a shepherd boy from the countryside, scarcely recognized or valued even by his own family. That he had risen to such a position was entirely the work of God, who had chosen him in love. Therefore, David exalted the LORD and gave Him all the glory.
As a Korean who came from a once-isolated country to the vast and expansive United States, I have had the privilege of doing many things, retiring, and now enjoying a peaceful and stable life. When I reflect on how I came to be where I am today, I recognize that it is all because of God's love, the grace of Jesus Christ who saved me, and the work of the Holy Spirit, who touched my heart and led me to believe in the Lord.
I remember the great and mighty works of the Triune God—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—and offer Him my praise. I renew my commitment to live each day according to the words of His covenant given to me. All that I am and all that I have become are gifts of His grace. To Him alone belong my thanksgiving, my praise, and my glory.
