Is Death the End of Everything?
Is Death the End of Everything?
Is Death the End of Everything?
War is a matter of life and death. The war between Ukraine and Russia has continued for more than four years, bringing not only an enormous drain on national resources but also a devastating loss of human life. According to recent estimates, more than 270,000 Russian soldiers have been killed, along with approximately 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers as of last February and an estimated 2,000 North Korean soldiers last year. When will the war end? Russia wants to reclaim the territory it has lost, while Ukraine refuses to return the land Russia has seized. There seems to be no end in sight. Perhaps the war will end only when the soldiers on one side have all been killed.
What about married couples who, instead of being a match made in heaven, live as lifelong enemies? Will their quarrels end only when one or both of them die? What does a person who spends a lifetime accumulating money and increasing wealth take with him when he dies? What happens to a country when a dictator who has ruled its people through fear dies? Even someone who has suffered from a prolonged illness and can no longer get up and carry on with life may spend all his resources in the hope of staying alive, yet he, too, will die.
Whether one has enjoyed glory or endured miserable suffering, it all comes to an end at death. People say, “When you die, that's it.” But is death really the end of everything?
The Jewish religious leaders and the Roman authorities believed that if they killed Jesus, a man who had shaken the world of his time, everything would be over. They put Him to death. But He broke out of the tomb and rose again, causing an even greater upheaval in the world and demonstrating that death is not the end. He ascended into heaven, never to die again, and revealed what would happen to those who believe in Him.
Saul had persecuted those who believed in Jesus. But when he encountered the living Lord Jesus, his life was turned upside down. He became Paul and devoted his entire life to the very Jesus he had once tried to destroy. Is this not truly remarkable? His transformation is powerful evidence that death is not the end.
In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul addresses people living in the midst of the worldly pleasures of Corinth. He emphasizes that our earthly bodies will die and decay, but that is not the end of our existence.
A person dies, is buried, and decays in the earth. But when the Lord returns, at the sound of God's trumpet, the dead will be raised imperishable, and those who have died will rise with bodies that will never die. When we rise as new beings, no longer subject to death or decay, we will cry out to death, “Where is your terrible sting?”
Why, then, do human beings die, and why do they fear death as though it were the end of everything? It is because of sin—the violation of God's law. God gave us His law so that He and humanity, and human beings with one another, could live together in harmony. But death entered the world through our disobedience.
Jesus, however, was without sin. He died in our place, bearing the guilt of the very human beings who had sinned. Through His resurrection, He conquered death and emerged victorious.
Now, those who believe in the Lord and belong to Him may die physically, but physical death is not the end. They will be raised in Christ and enjoy eternal life. Therefore, Paul urges those who believe this truth not to fear death, but to give thanks to the Lord, stand firm, and devote themselves even more earnestly to His work.
Those who look forward to the resurrection and eternal life know that death is not the end, and therefore they need not be afraid of it.
That is why, throughout the Roman Empire, countless people were put to death for proclaiming the Lord. And even today, many believers refuse to be captivated by the fleeting glory of this world, which ends in death. Instead, they look beyond death to the glory that awaits them. While they are still living in their earthly bodies, they continue to devote themselves to the Lord's work, whether on the mission field or in the places where they live and serve.
Is this not something for which we should be deeply thankful?
