생명과 소유 Life and Possessions 사람이 살기 위하여 기본적으로 필요한 것이 있다. 먹고 입고 사는 곳이다. 무엇을 먹는가 어떤 옷을 입고 어디에 사는가 하는 것은 개인에게 필요하지만 동시에 다른 사람에게 나타나는 그의 가치로 본다 우리는 눈에 보이는 것에 치중하기에 유행에 민감하고 아이들도 아파트의 평수를 말하고 이로서 자신의 위치를 정하고자 한다. 그것만 아니라 학력이나 직업도 사람을 평가하는 기준이 된다. 그의 가치관이나 생명 자체는 별로 생각하지 않고 나타난 소유가 생명의 전부인 것으로 생각된다. 생명은 내가 일해 얻은 것이 아니라 하나님께서 부모님을 통하여 허락하신 것이다. 그렇다면 주인인 하나님이 책임지고 돌볼 것이다. 공중의 새와 들의 백합화를 보라 이들을 돌보시는 하나님은 천합보다 귀한 우리의 생명을 돌보지 않겠는가! 우리가 할 일은 하나님의 나라와 그 의를 구하는 것이라 말씀하신다. 하나님께서 내게 이를 알게 하셨다. 아는 이 아무도 없는 미국에200불을 들고 유학하고 교회의 청빙을 받을 때 사례를 묻지 않았다. 교인들이 먹으면 나도 먹을 것이라는 생각이었고 다시 공부를 계속할 때 아무 돈이 없었지만 아내가 직장을 잡기까지 한달 동안 매주 한 번 문 앞에 식품이 놓여 있었다. 은퇴할 때 내 통장에 돈이 없었지만 주어지는 은퇴금을 만져보지도 않고 그것을 둘로 나누어 장학금을 주고자 학교와 교단 담당자를 오게 하여 재정 장로ㅠ가 직접 전달하게 하였다. 어떻게 살 것인가 걱정하는 딸에게 그동안 책임지고 돌보아 주신 하나님은 신실하다고 하였다. 정말 그는 우리가 살 수 있도록 인도하시고 은퇴 후 20년을 지나며 그 은혜에 감사한다. 유산을 나누도록 형에게 말하여 달라는 사람에게 예수님은 생명이 소유의 넉넉한데 있지 않다고 하시며 농사가 잘 되어 창고를 크게 지어 저장하고 스스로에게 이제 편안하게 살고 즐기자 하는 사람에게 오늘 밤 네 생명을 찾아가면 네가 준비한 것이 어떻게 되겠나 누가복음에서 말씀하신다. 내 생명은 나의 것이 아니기에 하나님을 주인으로 인정하며 높이고 내게 주어진 것으로 이웃과 사랑을 나누며 주의 나라를 준비하는 것을 삶의 본분으로 본다. Life and Possessions There are basic necessities required for a person to live: food, clothing, and shelter. What one eats, what one wears, and where one lives are necessary for the individual, but at the same time, they are often seen by others as indicators of that person’s worth. Because we tend to focus on what is visible, we are sensitive to trends. Even children talk about the size of their apartments and use it to determine their status. Not only that, but education and occupation also become standards by which people are evaluated. Little thought is given to one’s values or to life itself; instead, visible possessions are often regarded as the entirety of life. Life is not something we have earned through our own efforts; it is granted by God through our parents. If that is so, then God, the owner of life, will take responsibility for it and care for it. Consider the birds of the air and the lilies of the field—if God cares for them, will He not care for our lives, which are far more precious? We are told to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. God made me realize this truth. When I came to the United States to study with only $200, where I knew no one, I did not ask about salary when I received a call from a church. I believed that if the congregation had food, I would also eat. Later, when I continued my studies with no money, food was placed at my door once a week for a month until my wife found a job. At the time of my retirement, I had no money in my bank account, yet without even touching the retirement funds I received, I divided them in two and arranged for them to be given as scholarships through the school and the denomination. When my daughter worried about how to live, I told her that God, who had taken responsibility for us all along, is faithful. Truly, He has led us so that we could live, and even after 20 years of retirement, I remain grateful for His grace. To someone who asked Jesus to tell his brother to divide the inheritance, Jesus said that life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. He spoke of a man whose land produced plentifully, so he built bigger barns to store his crops and said to himself that he would now relax, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said to him, “This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared?” as recorded in the Gospel of Luke. Since my life is not my own, I acknowledge God as the owner, honor Him, and consider it my duty to share what has been given to me with others in love and to prepare for His kingdom.
