주님을 기다리며 Waiting for the Lord 신혼부부로 행복한 삶을 시작하였으나 신랑이 공부를 계속하겠다고 홀로 서울에 갔다. 기다리던 방학이 되어 돌아온다는 연락이 왔다. 신부는 감격의 마음으로 기다리다 신랑이 온다는 날 아침부터 준비한다. 종일 기다리다가 오후가 되자 누에를 먹이는 뽕잎을 딴다는 구실로 나무에 올라가 남편이 오는 방향을 바라보고 있다. 예수님 말씀에 처녀들이 신랑을 기다리는 이야기가 있다. 결혼날자를 정하고 열명의 처녀는 단장하고 신랑이 오기를 기다린다. 예식이 밤에 있고 그가 오는 시간이 늦어진다. 등을 들고 기다리다가 깜빡 잠이 들었는데 신랑이 온다는 소리에 정신이 났으나 다섯 처녀의 등은 기름이 부족하여 불이 끄질 위험이다. 다른 처녀에게 기름을 빌려달라고 하자 둘이 사용하기에 부족하니 가게에 가서 사라고 한다. 그들이 기름을 사러 간 사이에 신랑이 오고 등불을 들고 있는 처녀들이 맞아 혼인자리에 들어가고 문은 닫혔다. 기름을 사서 돌아온 처녀들이 문을 두드리며 열어 달라고 하나 문은 열리지 않는다. 이 말씀을 듣고 기억하는 베드로는 주님의 재림 약속을 그의 둘째 편지에서 말한다. 주께서 다시 오신다고 하셨고 주께서 승천하실 때 천사도 올라가심을 본 그대로 다시 오신다고 하였다. 주님이 언제 오시나? 내 아버지께서 물으셨다. 주님이 오겠다 하시고 2처년이 지났는데 주님의 약속은 믿을만 한가? 베드로가 대답한다. 주께는 천년이 하루 같고 하루가 천년 같다고 한다. 달력 시간(크로노스)눈 2천년이나 하나님의 계획을 이루는 시간(카이로서)는 이틀에 불과한 것이다. 또한 사랑으로 기다리는 자에게는 하루가 천년처럼 생각된다. 주님은 속히 오시고 싶지만 모든 사람이 회개하고 주께로 돌아오기를 기다리신다. 하나님은 한 사람도 멸망하지 않고 모든 사람이 구원 받기를 원하신다. 하나님의 사랑이다. 사랑으로 주님을 기다리며 몸과 마음을 깨끗하게 하여 거룩한 행실과 경건함이 주를 맞는 온전한 준비라 한다. 주가 오실 때는 소식이 있다. 하늘이 풀어지고 땅의 모든 것이 들어날 정도로 큰 소리가 난다. 바울은 하나님의 소리와 천사장의 나팔 소리라고 한다. 신랑이 신부와 잔치자리에 들어가듯 주께서 기다리는 주의 백성을 맞아 새 하늘과 새 땅으로 인도해 들이신다. 주의 약속은 신실한 것이라 믿음으로 서로 사랑하고 격려하며 소망 가운데 기다릴 것이다. Waiting for the Lord A newly married couple began their life together in happiness, but the husband decided to continue his studies and went alone to Seoul. When the long-awaited vacation came, word arrived that he would return home. The bride waited with a heart full of joy and, on the very day of his return, began preparing from early morning. She waited all day, and by the afternoon she climbed a tree under the pretense of picking mulberry leaves to feed the silkworms, looking toward the direction from which her husband would come. In the words of Jesus, there is a story about virgins waiting for the bridegroom. After the wedding day was set, ten virgins prepared themselves and waited for the bridegroom to come. The ceremony was to take place at night, and his arrival was delayed. They waited with their lamps, but while waiting they fell asleep. Suddenly they awoke at the cry announcing that the bridegroom was coming. Yet five of the virgins had little oil in their lamps, and the flames were in danger of going out. They asked the others to lend them some oil, but the others replied that there would not be enough for both and told them to go to the shop and buy some. While they were away buying oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins whose lamps were ready went out to meet him and entered the wedding banquet, and the door was shut. When the others returned and knocked on the door asking it to be opened, it was not opened for them. Peter, who remembered this teaching, speaks of the promise of the Lord’s return in his second letter. The Lord said that He would come again, and when He ascended into heaven, the angels also said that He would return in the same way as they had seen Him go. “When will the Lord come?” my father once asked. “The Lord said He would come, but it has already been two thousand years. Is His promise trustworthy?” Peter answers that with the Lord a thousand years are like a day, and a day like a thousand years. In calendar time (chronos), two thousand years have passed, but in the time that fulfills God’s plan (kairos), it is no more than two days. Moreover, for those who wait in love, even one day can feel like a thousand years. The Lord desires to come quickly, but He waits so that all people may repent and return to Him. God does not want even one person to perish but desires that everyone be saved. This is the love of God. Therefore, as we wait for the Lord in love, we should keep both body and heart pure. Holy conduct and godliness are the complete preparation for welcoming the Lord. When the Lord comes, there will be a great announcement. A mighty sound will be heard, as if the heavens were being dissolved and everything on earth revealed. The apostle Paul says it will be with the voice of God and the trumpet of the archangel. Just as a bridegroom enters the wedding feast with his bride, the Lord will receive His waiting people and lead them into the new heaven and the new earth. The Lord’s promise is faithful; therefore, in faith we will love one another, encourage one another, and wait with hope.
