How Easily It Happen

How Easily It Happens Abram was living in Haran with his wife and nephew. He had accumulated considerable wealth and established a stable life there. Yet when he heard God's command to leave, he departed immediately, even though he did not know where he was going. He had moved from Ur of the Chaldeans to Haran, but now that he had finally settled down, how could he leave so easily? Abram had lived in Ur of the Chaldeans, worshiping many idols. The idols made no promises to those who worshiped them, nor did they speak or act on their behalf. Abram may have dreamed of finding a new place where he could succeed through his own efforts, but at the age of seventy-five, he had no children and no one who recognized his worth. Perhaps, while living among the many gods worshiped in his homeland, he had heard that there was a God who truly existed. Then, in Haran, Someone appeared to him and spoke. God told him to leave his country, his relatives, and his father's household and go to the land that He would show him. God promised to bless him, make him into a great nation, make his name great, and make him a blessing to the world. God would bless those who blessed him and curse those who cursed him. Abram came to believe that God would be with him. Upon hearing God's words, Abram immediately packed his belongings and set out on a new journey. How could such a thing happen? He recognized that the God he had encountered was entirely different from the idols he had worshiped in his homeland. People who worship idols also hope to receive blessings, but they receive no answers or tangible help from them. The God Abram now encountered, however, spoke to him, gave him directions, and promised him what lay ahead. Having already left his homeland once, he apparently found it no great hardship to move again when a blessing lay before him. Thus, he departed without hesitation. When Abram arrived in Canaan, God promised to give that land to him. Abram built an altar there to the LORD God, but he had no place to call his own, not even enough ground to set his foot upon. He moved on and built another altar to God in the hills east of Bethel. Building an altar meant that he was receiving the One who spoke to him as his own God. Although he had previously built altars before lifeless idols, he now experienced the joy of encountering the living God and entering into a personal relationship with Him. The LORD God had now become Abram's God. My grandmother worshiped many spirits, believing that a spirit dwelt in every corner and in every vessel and that she had to appease each one to avoid misfortune. Then her second son fell ill. She prayed to the spirits and performed shamanistic rituals, but he did not recover. A relative told her that he might be healed if he believed in Jesus. She went to church, called upon the Lord's name, and put her faith in Him. Her son recovered. Convinced that the true God was the One who answered prayer and healed the sick, she began taking me, as a young child, to church, even though it was an hour's journey from home. In this way, she planted the seeds of faith in me. God is the One who answers prayer and demonstrates His power. This is what distinguishes Him from the many other gods worshiped in the world. When the Lord said, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you,” He was declaring that the LORD God is alive, answers our prayers, and desires to establish a personal relationship with us. Because Abram obeyed God's word, he became Abraham, the father of faith, and the world received blessings through him. I, too, encountered the Lord early in my life. I listened to His Word, obeyed, and followed Him. Looking back, I am grateful that the Lord has guided my life all these years. I give thanks to Him and praise His holy name.
