분간하기 어려워요Difficult to Discern 한국은 지정학적 위치로 인하여 많은 전쟁을 겪었다. 청일전쟁 노일전쟁이 일어나며 한국이 무대가 되고 일본이 이기면서 한국은 일본의 지배를 받는 식민지 속국이 되고 말았다. 이런 일이 비슷한 지정학적 위치에 있는 이스라엘에도 일어난다. 요시야 왕은 나라를 하나님 중심으로 개혁하고 백성을 잘 다스리는 선왕으로 인정 받았다. 그러나 자주 위기를 겪는다. 당시의 열강에 속한 이집트와 바빌론 싸움의 지리적 중간 위치에 있다. 이집트 느고가 바빌론과 전쟁하기 위하여 이스라엘을 지나고자 하나 요시야는 그것을 허락하지 않는다. 느고는 하나님께서 바빌론을 치라는 명령을 받고 이스라엘은 지나가는 것이지 싸우는 것은 아니니 하나님의 말씀을 따라 그의 군대가 지나가는 것을 허락하라고 하나 왕은 변장하여 느고를 막고 지나가지 못하게 한다. 어느 병사가 무심코 쏘는 화살에 요시야는 중상을 당하고 예루살렘에 돌아가 죽었다. 요시야는 분간하기 어려운 형편을 맞았다. 하나님께서 이집트왕 느고에게 과연 그런 말씀을 하셨을까? 그의 말을 믿지 않고 스스로 나가 이집트가 바빌론과 싸우러 가며 이스라엘 나라 사용과 통과를 허락하지 않았다. 왕으로서 나라를 굳게 하기 위하여 어떤 전쟁 참가를 허락하지 않겠다는 의도인지 모를 일이다. 그러나 그는 느고의 입에서 나오는 하나님의 말씀을 듣지 않은 결과로 그는 결국 이집트와 전쟁을 하고 적군의 화살에 죽임을 당하였다. 하나님은 반드시 선지자를 통해서만 말씀하시는가? 아모스는 선지자나 선지자의 자녀도 아니고 오직 뽕나무를 기르는 농부였지만 하나님이 그를 통하여 이스라엘 멸망을 말씀하셨다. 오늘 하나님은 반드시 목사를 통하여서 말씀하시는 것은 아니다. 하나님은 자기가 택한 누구에게나 말씀하실 수 있다. 장로나 일반 성도나 하나님이 기뻐하시면 그의 뜻을 보이고 말씀하실 수 있다. 환상이나 꿈에 나타나 말씀하기도 하지만 많은 경우 성령 말씀을 읽고 듣는 중 마음에 주시는 말씀을 받을 수 있고 그 말씀이 이루어지는 것을 보기도 한다. 내게는 내가 다섯 살 된 때 위의 것을 찾고 땅의 것을 찾지 말라는 골로새3:2의 말씀을 하시고 그것으로 내 평생 삶의 지침이 되게 하셨다. 중요한 것은 하나님의 말씀을 분간하고 듣고 따르는 것이 복이요 삶의 운명이 된다. 내가 대학 진학을 위하여 준비할 때 나는 법대에 가고자 하고 부모님이나 교사들 모두가 찬동하며 법대에 가라고 한다. 그런데 누군가 내 이름을 부르며 말씀하신다. 법대에 간다고? 법대에 가면 무엇을 하라는데? 결국 판사가 되겠지요. 판사는 무슨 일을 하는데? 송사가 있을 때 시비를 가리고 판단하겠지요! 판단은 내게 맡기고 너는 나의 사랑을 전하면 어떻겠어? 내게 말씀하시는 분이 하나님이라는 것을 알았다. 여기서 생각과 방향의 차이가 나는 것을 본다. 못들은 체 하거나 무시하고 내 생각대로 할 수 있으리라. 그러나 나의 응답은 알겠습니다로 대화는 끝이 났다. 하나님의 사랑을 전하는 길이 무엇인가? 묻고 알아서 목사가 되고자 하고 목사 준비에 좋은 학과를 영문학으로 추천 받고 따랐디. 데이트 상대가 목사와는 결혼하지 않겠다고 하나 포기하지 않고 오히려 그를 설득시키고 하나님이 원하시는 길로 나아가 평생을 지나며 오늘에 이르렀다. 돌아보면 하나님은 신실하여 그의 길을 따르는 자를 책임지고 인도하신다는 사실을 발견한다. 내 삶이 새롭게 주어져도 나는 나의 뜻이 아니라 나를 보내신 하나님 아버지의 뜻을 따라 살고 싶고 나의 삶을 향한 그의 뜻을 이루어 드리고 싶은 마음이다. 주는 크고 능력이 있으며 그는 한결 같이 내 삶을 다스리고 세상을 다스리고 계시기에 그의 이름을 높이며 찬양한다. Difficult to Discern Because of its geopolitical location, Korea has experienced many wars throughout its history. The First Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War were fought in and around Korea, making the Korean Peninsula a battlefield. When Japan won, Korea eventually became a colony under Japanese rule. Something similar happened to Israel, which was also located in a geopolitically strategic position. King Josiah is recognized as one of the good kings who reformed the nation according to God’s ways and governed the people well. Yet even he faced repeated crises. At that time, Israel was geographically situated between two great powers, Egypt and Babylon, which were engaged in conflict. Pharaoh Neco of Egypt wanted to pass through Israel on his way to fight Babylon, but Josiah would not allow him to do so. Neco told Josiah that God had commanded him to fight against Babylon and that he was not coming to fight Israel. He asked Josiah to allow his army to pass through the land according to God’s command. But Josiah disguised himself and went out to stop Neco from passing through. Then, by a seemingly random arrow shot by one of the soldiers, Josiah was seriously wounded. He was taken back to Jerusalem, where he died. Josiah found himself in a situation that was difficult to discern. Had God really spoken to Pharaoh Neco? Josiah did not believe Neco’s words. Instead, he went out to stop the Egyptian army from passing through Israel on its way to fight Babylon. Perhaps, as king, he thought he needed to protect the nation by refusing to allow any foreign army to pass through his territory or become involved in a war. Whatever his intention may have been, he failed to listen to the word of God that came through Neco. As a result, he ended up engaging in battle with the Egyptians and was killed by an enemy arrow. Does God speak only through prophets? Amos was neither a prophet by profession nor the son of a prophet. He was simply a farmer who tended sycamore trees. Yet God spoke through Amos concerning the coming destruction of Israel. Today, God does not necessarily speak only through pastors. God can speak to anyone whom He chooses. If He is pleased to do so, He can reveal His will and speak through an elder or an ordinary church member. At times He may speak through a vision or a dream. But often, as we read and hear the Word of God through the Holy Spirit, He speaks to our hearts, and we may later see His word fulfilled. When I was five years old, God impressed upon me the words of Colossians 3:2: “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Those words became a guiding principle throughout my life. What is important is to discern God’s word, listen to it, and follow it. This can become a blessing and can determine the direction of our lives. When I was preparing to enter college, I wanted to go to law school. My parents and teachers all agreed with me and encouraged me to study law. But then someone seemed to call my name and ask me: “You are going to law school?” “Yes.” “What will you do if you go to law school?” “I suppose I will eventually become a judge.” “What does a judge do?” “When there is a dispute, a judge determines what is right and wrong and makes a judgment.” “Leave judgment to Me. How about you spend your life sharing My love?” At that moment, I realized that it was God who was speaking to me. Here I can see the difference between my own thoughts and God’s direction. I could have pretended not to hear Him or simply ignored Him and continued according to my own plans. But my response was, “I understand.” And the conversation ended there. Then I began to ask, “What is the way for me to share God’s love?” As I sought the answer, I decided to become a pastor. I was advised that English literature would be a good major for preparing for ministry, and I followed that advice. The woman I was dating said that she would never marry a pastor. But I did not give up. Instead, I persuaded her, and together we continued on the path that I believed God desired. Thus I have lived my life to this day. Looking back, I discover again and again that God is faithful. He takes responsibility for and guides those who follow His way. If I were given a new life, I would still want to live not according to my own will, but according to the will of God the Father who sent me. I want to fulfill His purpose for my life. The Lord is great and powerful. He has consistently ruled over my life and continues to rule over the world. Therefore, I lift up His name and praise Him.
