어린 아이가 되어야 Become Like Little Children 마태복음 18장에서 예수님의 말씀은 어린 자나 어른이나 하나님 앞에서는 꼭 같이 귀하다는 것이다. 예수님 주변에 사람들이 모여드는데 어른들은 자기 어린 자녀들이 복을 받도록 데리고 온다. 제자들은 이 어린 아이를 물리친다. 어린이를 소외하는 문화는 어디나 있을 수 있고 한국에서도 어른들 모임에 아이들은 끼어들 자리가 없었다. 그러나 주님은 제자들을 꾸중하며 이런 어린 사람들이 천국에서 귀하다고 하시며 어린양 비유를 말씀하셨다. 양 백마리를 기르는 목자가 한 마리가 없어진 것을 알자 아흔 아홉 마리를 두고 한 마리를 찾을 때까지 찾아 어깨에 메고 돌아오는 기쁨을 말씀하신다. 아흔 아홉도 꼭 같이 중요하지만 잃었다가 찾은 것으로 기뻐하는 모습을 표현하신다. 다른 곳에서는 드라크마 열 개중 하나를 잃었기에 온 방은 뒤지며 찾아내는 기쁨, 두 아들 중 하나가 유산을 받아 먼 나라로 가서 허랑방탕하여 다 잃어버리고 거지가 되어 돌아오는 것을 기다리다가 맞이하는 아버지의 기쁨으로 표현하셨다. 당시 바리새인은 인정 받기를 원하고 잔치에서 윗자리에 앉는 것을 원하였지만 주께서는 차라리 낮은 자리에 앉으라 하신다. 주님의 기준은 누구든지 어린아이 같이 힘이 없어 밀려나는 심정의 겸손한 마음으로 주를 사모하고 주의 나라를 사모하는 자를 말씀한다. 어떤 사람이 잔치를 배설하고 사람들을 초청하였으나 모두 다른 일이 있다며 사양하기에 길거리에 가서 사람들을 초대하나 여전히 빈 자리가 있어 멀리 산울가로 가서 만나는 사람을 데리고 와 자리를 채웠다. 하나님 나라의 잔치에는 어른이나 어린아이나 함께 참여한다. 유대인만 아니라 갈릴리 사마리아 두로와 시돈까지 부르심에 응하는 자들이 참여하여 빈 지리를 채우게 된다. 인도의 지도자 간디의 이야기가 있다. 그가 예수님의 산상설교를 읽으면서 감동을 받고 인도의 계급제도를 해결하기 위하여는 복음이 필요한 것을 알고 남아프리카를 방문 중 교회를 찾았다. 안내하던 자가 그를 보더니 당신은 저 건너 편 교회로 가라고 하였다. 간디는 이것이 기독교의 현실이라면 나는 평생 힌두로 살겠다고 하였다. 기독교의 이런 현실로 인하여 많은 사람이 교회를 떠난다. 내가 기도하는 이필주 신경숙 박성호 박송자는 모두 교회에서 사람들에게 실망하고 떠난 사람들이라 이들을 위하여 기도하지만 주께로 돌아오게 하기가 참으로 쉽지 않다. 그러기에 우리에게 필요한 것은 비판의 안목이 적은 어린아이가 되어야 하나님 나라에 적절한 사람이라고 하는 이유가 된다고 본다. 이들이 돌아와 잔치에 참여하기까지는 항상 빈 자기가 있기에 주님은 자리를 채우라 말씀하신다. Become Like Little Children In Matthew 18, Jesus teaches that whether a person is a child or an adult, everyone is equally precious in the sight of God. As people gathered around Jesus, adults brought their young children to Him so that they might receive His blessing. But the disciples tried to turn the children away. A culture that excludes children can exist anywhere. In Korea, too, there was a time when children had no place among gatherings of adults. But Jesus rebuked His disciples and taught them that such little ones are precious in the kingdom of heaven. He then told the parable of the lost sheep. A shepherd who has a hundred sheep realizes that one is missing. He leaves the ninety-nine and searches until he finds the one that is lost. When he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and returns home. The ninety-nine are equally important, but Jesus emphasizes the special joy of finding the one that was lost. Elsewhere, Jesus tells of a woman who has ten silver coins but loses one of them. She searches every corner of the house until she finds it and rejoices. He also tells of a father who has two sons. One of them takes his inheritance, leaves for a distant country, wastes everything in reckless living, and eventually returns home as a beggar. The father waits for him, welcomes him, and rejoices when he sees his lost son return. The Pharisees of Jesus' day wanted to be recognized and desired the places of honor at banquets. But Jesus taught people instead to take the lower place. The standard of the Lord is different. He speaks of those who come to Him with the humble heart of a little child—those who recognize their weakness, even when they feel pushed aside by others, and who earnestly long for the Lord and His kingdom. Jesus also told of a man who prepared a great banquet and invited many people. But they all made excuses, saying that they had other things to do. So the man went out into the streets and invited people to come. Yet there were still empty places. He then sent his servants farther out, even to the roads and countryside, and brought in everyone they could find until the banquet hall was filled. At the banquet of God's kingdom, both adults and children are invited to participate. Not only Jews, but also people from Galilee, Samaria, Tyre, and Sidon would respond to the call and come to fill the empty places. There is a well-known story about Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of India. While reading Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, he was deeply moved and came to understand that the gospel was needed to address India's caste system. During a visit to South Africa, he went to a church. But when the person who was guiding people saw him, he told Gandhi, "You should go to the church across the street." Gandhi was deeply disappointed. He is said to have responded, in effect, "If this is what Christianity is really like, I will remain a Hindu for the rest of my life." Because of realities like this within Christianity, many people become disappointed with the church and leave. The four people for whom I pray—Lee Pil-joo, Shin Kyung-sook, Park Sung-ho, and Park Song-ja—are people who became disappointed by others in the church and eventually left. I continue to pray for them, but it is not easy to lead them back to the Lord. Perhaps this is why we need to become like little children. A little child is less inclined to judge and criticize others and is more willing to come with a simple and humble heart. Such a person is well suited for the kingdom of God. Until these people return and take their places at the banquet, there will always be empty seats. Therefore, the Lord continues to say to us, "Go and fill the empty places." The banquet is not complete while there are still empty seats.
