뿌리 깊은 나무 A Deeply Rooted Tree 대한민국 건국 초기 대통령이 지방 순시를 한다고 하자 지방 지도자는 대통령에게 좋은 인상을 주기 위하여 길에 가로수가 있어야 한다고 생각하고 나무를 잘라와 길가에 꽂았다. 며칠 동안 살아 있는 것 같으나 뿌리가 없기에 곧 말라 버려지고 땔감으로 쓰여지게 되었다. 이외 대조로 용비어천가에는 뿌리 깊은 나무는 바람에 아니 밀리며 꽃이 좋고 열매를 많이 맺는다며 학식과 인격을 갖춘 사람의 삶이 어떠함을 말하고 있다. 비울 사도는 골로새서 2장에서 교인들에게 뿌리 깊은 나무와 뿌리 없는 인생을 말한다. 전통과 초등학문, 세상 권세와 법조문 등은 때마다 변하여 권불10년세라 십년이면 강산도 변하고 마르는 뿌리 옅은 나무로 본다. 반면 예수 그리스도를 주로 믿는 자는 그 안에서 행하는 자로 뿌리가 깊어 세상 풍조에 흔들리지 않고 교훈을 받은 대로 든든히 서서 열매를 맺어 감사를 넘치게 한다고 한다. 예수께서는 사람으로 오셨으나 그는 하나님이라 하나님의 모든 신성이 그 안에 충만하고 그는 죽임을 당하였으나 부활하여 생명의 풍성함을 보여 주시기에 그를 믿고 영접하여 그와 연합하면 그의 싱싱한 생명을 받아 누리게 된다. 육체는 한계를 가지고 언젠가 쓰러지지만 죽음에서 부활하신 예수께서는 죽을 수 없는 생명에 거하고 그 생명을 믿는 자에게 주신다. 주를 믿는 사람은 육체의 할례가 아니라 예수 이름으로 세례 받으며 그와 함께 죽고 그의 부활 생명에 참여하는 것이라 이는 뿌리 깊은 나무로 마르지 않고 꽃과 열매를 가져 오는 풍성한 삶을 살게 한다. 예수를 믿어도 많은 바람과 고통을 겪는다. 세상 풍조와 전통, 질병과 가난, 실패와 조롱, 미움과 박해를 당한다.그래도 흔들리지 않고 든든히 서서 오히려 주님의 고난에 참여한다는 생각으로 오히려 감사하며 넘치는 생명의 풍성함을 나타내고 있으니 이런 사람은 세상이 감당하지 못한다. 이들은 세상을 따라 사는 사람들의 관심을 끌고 이들을 주께로 인도하는 길을 열고 영생의 복음이 전파된 것이 기독교 역사와 선교 사역의 현실이다. 내가 주를 믿고 그에게 뿌리를 깊이 내리고 든든히 서 있어 꽃과 열매가 풍성한 나무인가를 스스로 물으며 주님과의 관계를 날마다 새롭게 하기를 원한다. A Deeply Rooted Tree Suppose that, in the early days of the founding of the Republic of Korea, the president was making a tour of the provinces. A local leader, wanting to make a good impression on the president, thought that there should be trees lining the roads. So he cut down some trees and planted them along the roadside. For a few days, the trees appeared to be alive, but because they had no roots, they soon withered and were eventually used as firewood. In contrast, the Yongbieocheonga, an early Korean literary work, says that a deeply rooted tree is not blown down by the wind, produces beautiful flowers, and bears abundant fruit. It uses the image of such a tree to describe what the life of a person with knowledge and character should be like. The Apostle Paul speaks in Colossians 2 about a life that is deeply rooted and a life without roots. Human traditions, elementary teachings, worldly powers, and legal regulations are constantly changing. As the Korean saying goes, “Power lasts only ten years,” and even the mountains and rivers change with the passing of ten years. Such things are like shallow-rooted trees that eventually dry up. On the other hand, those who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord are people who live their lives in Him. Because they are deeply rooted in Him, they are not shaken by the changing ways of the world. They stand firmly according to the teaching they have received and bear fruit, overflowing with thanksgiving. Jesus came into the world as a human being, yet He is God, and all the fullness of God’s nature dwells in Him. He was put to death, but He rose again and demonstrated the abundance of life. When we believe in Him, receive Him, and are united with Him, we receive and enjoy His living and abundant life. The human body has limitations and will eventually fall, but Jesus, who rose from the dead, possesses a life that cannot die, and He gives that life to those who believe in Him. Those who believe in the Lord are not marked merely by physical circumcision; rather, they are baptized in the name of Jesus, dying with Him and participating in His resurrection life. This enables them to live like deeply rooted trees that do not wither but produce beautiful flowers and abundant fruit. Even those who believe in Jesus experience many winds and hardships. They face the changing ways of the world and its traditions, illness and poverty, failure and ridicule, hatred and persecution. Yet they are not shaken. They stand firmly and, believing that they are sharing in the sufferings of the Lord, they give thanks even in their trials. In this way, they reveal the overflowing abundance of life they have received from Him. Such people are those whom the world cannot overcome. Their lives attract the attention of those who live according to the ways of the world and open a way for them to be led to the Lord. The spread of the gospel of eternal life through such lives has been a reality throughout Christian history and missionary work. I want to ask myself: Am I a tree that is deeply rooted in the Lord, standing firmly and bearing abundant flowers and fruit because I believe in Him? I desire to renew my relationship with the Lord each day and remain deeply rooted in Him, so that my life may continue to display the abundance of His life.
